© 2018 University of Calgary. All Rights Reserved. Within postsecondary education, the assessment of effective teaching has largely relied upon student evaluations of teaching. However, the process through which teachers make sense of their student evaluations is unclear. A research team of six undergraduate nursing students and four nursing educators explored the research question: How do nursing educators make meaning from their student evaluations of teaching? Gadamerian hermeneutics guided unstructured interviews with nursing educators working at a Middle East campus of a Canadian university. The interview transcripts were interpreted through a process of naive readings, rereadings, interpretive dialogues, and interpretive …

Impact Of Client Criminal History: Barriers To Consider For The Rehabilitation Counselor, Brent Van Ham Jan 2018

Impact Of Client Criminal History: Barriers To Consider For The Rehabilitation Counselor, Brent Van Ham

Research Papers

For people navigating the world with a disability, the presence of a criminal record may present them with yet another challenge to function within their lives to the fullest extent possible. The prevalence of people who seek rehabilitative services who have criminal records may require counselors to have more knowledge of the barriers that they frequently encounter. The rehabilitation counselor who works with these clients must take these barriers into account when planning and implementing services for them, just as they must take into account other barriers that are socially derived, such as discrimination in all of its forms and …

The Johari Wonderland: The Fusion Of Classic Literature And Film To Enhance Key Group Counseling Concepts And Counselor Reflexivity, Jan Parker

Online Theses and Dissertations

The Johari Window is a model of relational dynamics and key to understanding group counseling. Counselors-in-training must grasp the concept in order to flourish as group leaders in the field. Therefore, how might this concept be explained in a way that provides clarity and enhances students' reflexive skills? This narrative analysis explored in what ways, if any, an originally designed Johari Window experiential activity can help students obtain understanding of the topic. A summarization of Carroll's (1865/2014) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Other Classic Works as well as movie clips from Tim Burton's production of Disney's Alice in Wonderland (Lebenzon …

The Uneasy History Of Experiential Education In U.S. Law Schools, Peter A. Joy Jan 2018

The Uneasy History Of Experiential Education In U.S. Law Schools, Peter A. Joy

Scholarship@WashULaw

This article explores the history of legal education, particularly the rise of experiential learning and its importance. In the early years of legal education in the United States, law schools devalued the development of practical skills in students, and many legal educators viewed practical experience in prospective faculty as a “taint.” This article begins with a brief history of these early years and how legal education subsequently evolved with greater involvement of the American Bar Association (ABA). With involvement of the ABA came a call for greater uniformity in legal education and guidelines to help law schools establish criteria for …

Editorial: In A World Of ‘Us’ And ‘Them’: The Case Against Intervention-Focused Research, Kiaras Gharabaghi, Ben Anderson-Nathe

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Editorial. The authors consider the manifestation of "us" and "them" narratives in research on children and youth and on intervention research in child and youth services. They say much of the research is damage-focused despite the best intentions. They mention damaged-centered research written by scholar Eve Tuck in 2009 in the "Harvard Educational Review." The authors add that intervention-based research is blind to the daily life of young people within their self-formed communities.

There has recently been renewed interest and a growing demand for school feeding programs. In the Philippines, the government, through the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and non-government organizations such as the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED), has initiated such programs to address the prevalence of malnutrition among Filipino school-age children. In 2011, ACED introduced the ACED Blueplate Centralized Kitchen (ABCK) model for large-scale school feeding. This study aims to provide a supply chain profile of the first and largest city-wide implementation of the ABCK model in the Philippines to date, which is …

The #Metoo Movement: An Invitation For Feminist Critique Of Rape Crisis Framing, Jamie Abrams Jan 2018

The #Metoo Movement: An Invitation For Feminist Critique Of Rape Crisis Framing, Jamie Abrams

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article invites feminists to leverage the #MeToo Movement as a critical analytical tool to explore the longevity of the enduring rape crisis framing of victim services. For nearly half a century, victims have visited rape crisis centers, called rape crisis hotlines, and mobilized rape crisis response teams to provide services and support. This enduring political and social framing around rape as a crisis is opaque, has prompted a political backlash, and risks distorting hard-fought feminist legal, social, and political battles. It has yielded underreporting, underutilization, and recurring risks of budgetary cuts. This model and terminology have gone virtually unchanged …

Conceptual Framework For A Curriculum In Social Change, Iris M. Yob

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Colleges, universities, and many high schools are expressing their mission in terms of creating social change or contributing to the common good. Such a mission suggests that if they are going to graduate students who will fulfill this mission, they will need to consider how they will best prepare students to do this. The conceptual framework for a curriculum in social change in this article offers a holistic approach, taking into account what a student should know, be able to do, and what values and attitudes should be nurtured. To that end, the article identifies three competencies in the knowledge …

Structured Feedback Training For Timeout: Efficacy And Efficiency In Comparison To A Didactic Model, Scott A. Jensen, Sean Blumberg, Megan Doerr

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Although time-out has been demonstrated to be effective across multiple settings, little research exists on effective methods for training others to implement time-out. The present set of studies is an exploratory analysis of a structured feedback method for training time-out using repeated role-plays. The three studies examined (a) a between-subjects comparison to more a traditional didactic/video modeling method of time-out training, (b) a within-subjects comparison to traditional didactic/video modeling training for another skill, and (c) the impact of structured feedback training on in-home time-out implementation. Though findings are only preliminary and more research is needed, the structured feedback method appears …
