An Exploration Of Caregiver Engagement In Residential Treatment For Youth, Raquel Moriarty Derrick Jan 2018

An Exploration Of Caregiver Engagement In Residential Treatment For Youth, Raquel Moriarty Derrick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Support for caregiver engagement in their child’s residential treatment is widespread and growing because of the benefits of caregiver engagement to a youth’s treatment process. This dissertation explores the construct of caregiver engagement, defined as caregiver motivation and expectation for their child’s treatment, caregiver bond with staff and caregiver collaboration on treatment goals and tasks among a cohort of 101 caregivers with a child in a Residential Treatment Center (RTC). Mixed methods were used to qualitatively and quantitatively explore caregiver perspectives and experiences that contribute to or detract from their level of engagement in their child’s treatment process. Findings reveal …

Community College Faculty: Exploring The Process By Which They Determine And Manage Interpersonal Boundaries With Students, Suzanne M. Schmidt Jan 2018

Community College Faculty: Exploring The Process By Which They Determine And Manage Interpersonal Boundaries With Students, Suzanne M. Schmidt

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Higher education instruction is a relational practice that requires skill, reflection, and intentional effort. Faculty-student relationships are critical to learning. Interpersonal boundaries between community college faculty and students are a dimension of the faculty-student relationship that is under-researched and minimally understood.

The purpose of this research was to qualitatively and phenomenologically explore faculty perceptions of their awareness of boundaries between themselves and community college students. Data were collected from seven faculty who work at a large Northwestern community college. Interviews were conducted to explore faculty perceptions of how they become aware of, arrive at, and negotiate change of their interpersonal …

Mitigating Disparities In Community Hiv Testing Among Youth And Young Adults, Joseph Mims, Katrina Odell, Graham F. Watts Sr, Sandy Arts Jan 2018

Mitigating Disparities In Community Hiv Testing Among Youth And Young Adults, Joseph Mims, Katrina Odell, Graham F. Watts Sr, Sandy Arts

Florida Public Health Review

Prevention strategies are a key lever for reducing HIV incidence, which differentially affects jurisdictions. HIV incidence coexists with social determinants of health, health-related disparities, poverty, and other risk factors. One zip code in Jacksonville, Florida’s urban core fit the description of a disadvantaged jurisdiction; hence, the local HIV prevention consortia implemented a theory-based, social outreach HIV prevention event, which attracted 189 residents and 64 tested for HIV. Survey data from 120 respondents indicated that event attendees viewed the event’s prevention activities and the supporting entertainment music favorably. Respondents liked the emphases on healthy behaviors, health education, and community capacity to …

The Relationship Between Physical Dating Violence And Alcohol And Drug Use Among High School Students In An Urban Florida County, Stacey B. Griner, Michele Johnson Moore, Kristina Wilson Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Physical Dating Violence And Alcohol And Drug Use Among High School Students In An Urban Florida County, Stacey B. Griner, Michele Johnson Moore, Kristina Wilson

Florida Public Health Review

Physical dating violence (PDV) is associated with a number of serious behavioral and psychological consequences for adolescents who have been victimized. However, there are few studies investigating the relationship between PDV and alcohol and drug use specifically among high school students in Florida. This study analyzes data from the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey in an urban school district in Florida. Alcohol use, drug use, and sociodemographic factors were significantly associated with PDV. After controlling for individual factors, odds of experiencing PDV were higher among those who reported current alcohol use (aOR: 2.38, [95% CI 1.53-3.69]) and those who reported …

Incidences Of School-Based Anti-Gay And Gender-Related Bullying: Differences Across Levels Of Education, Evan Mcewing, Joseph M. Zolobczuk, Kiet D. Huynh, Ariel A. Gonzalez, Debbiesiu L. Lee

Florida Public Health Review

Anti-gay and gender-related bullying and harassment are pervasive public health problems found in schools and are correlated with negative mental health and educational outcomes for students. This study examines the differences in the forms and prevalence of anti-gay and gender-related bullying with students from middle school, secondary, and post-secondary institutions. This information can assist researchers and practitioners in better understanding the prevalence of anti-gay verbal versus physical harassment at particular education levels. The sample comprised 7,007 participants. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to examine differences across levels of education, race/ethnicity, and gender on the 9-item Gender and Orientation Attitudes …

Using Person-Centered Scheduling With Geriatric Patients To Reduce Anxiety With Telepsychiatry, Jody Long, Patricia A. Wilkerson, Evi Taylor, John Hall, Christopher Peters

Research, Publications & Creative Work

This study explored using person-centered scheduling with telepsychiatry for rural community geriatric patients. Quantitative research approaches were used to determine the level of satisfaction participants experienced with person-centered scheduling and geriatric telepsychiatry. Quantitative data were collected by using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) before scheduling the first appointment and to assess the intervention’s effectiveness after the telepsychiatry session. Person-centered telepsychiatry scheduling decreased geriatric patients’ anxiety as evidenced by Zung SAS scores. Conclusion: Older adult patients saw telepsychiatry as a viable means of treatment. Future research with geriatrics from different regions is needed. Implications and future directions include exploring patient …

Building Critically Reflective Practice In Higher Education Students: Employing Auto-Ethnography And Educational Connoisseurship In Assessment, Jane Southcott, Renee Crawford Jan 2018

Building Critically Reflective Practice In Higher Education Students: Employing Auto-Ethnography And Educational Connoisseurship In Assessment, Jane Southcott, Renee Crawford

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study posed the question: Does using an educational connoisseurship framework applied to auto-ethnography assist in the development of reflective practice in teacher education? The design of authentic assessments that assist students in making meaningful links between theory and practice is a complex process. We created an assessment task that was directly linked to the lived experience of the students and specifically focused on their educational practice. Students were required to write an auto-ethnography that was shaped by educational connoisseurship and criticism. With ethical permission we retained the auto-ethnographic assignments by nineteen students. After independent thematic analysis we built a …

Poems Found Among The Resolution Scrapbooks: A Teacher Narrative Inquiry, Cynthia M. Morawski Jan 2018

Poems Found Among The Resolution Scrapbooks: A Teacher Narrative Inquiry, Cynthia M. Morawski

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Six pre-service teachers participated in a component of narrative inquiry that took place the week before their teacher education program began. The component offered the teachers a variety of multimodal activities, such as body biographies, teaching museums, and paper tearing representations, all making use of repurposed materials, to critically consider their recurring narratives in relation to their recurring pedagogical beliefs and practices. Handmade journals and resolution scrapbooks acted as places to reflect and record their responses (Author). For this paper, I turned to narrative inquiry supported by found poetry and focus on the part of the component that contains the …

Increasing Access To High-Impact Practices: A Case Study On Internships At The University Of Mississippi, Kristina Phillips, Jennifer Saxon Jan 2018

Increasing Access To High-Impact Practices: A Case Study On Internships At The University Of Mississippi, Kristina Phillips, Jennifer Saxon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation-in-practice case study aimed to assess internships opportunities at the University of Mississippi (UM) to determine potential barriers for access among African American students and students with low socioeconomic backgrounds. Internships are a high impact practice, as identified by the American Association for Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) that provide students with tangible, real-world experience to prepare for careers after graduation. Experiential learning theories (Kolb, 1984; Dewey, 1938) and high-impact practices (Kuh, 2008) establish the importance of student engagement outside of traditional classroom settings. The patterns and frequency of internship participation are not clear for University of Mississippi students. Research …

Data Note: State Intellectual And Developmental Disability Agencies’ Service Trends, Agnes Zalewska, Jean Winsor, Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

ThinkWork! Publications

In FY2016, an estimated 638,568 individuals received day or employment supports from state IDD program agencies. This number grew from 455,824 in FY1999. The estimated number of individuals in integrated employment services increased from 108,227 in FY1999 to 120,244 in FY2016. Despite the trend to terminate facility-based services in some states, the overall state investment continues to emphasize non-work services, rather than integrated employment services. Figure 1 shows the trends in the percentage of people served in integrated employment and facility-based and non-work settings between FY2008 and FY2016.

Paper Chase: Perceptions Of The Pursuit Of Academic Scholarly Productivity Among Faculty Writing Group Participants, Deidra Jackson Jan 2018

Paper Chase: Perceptions Of The Pursuit Of Academic Scholarly Productivity Among Faculty Writing Group Participants, Deidra Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This autoethnography uses the researcher’s personal journey from professional writer to emergent academic scholar to examine the perceptions of the frequent pursuit of academic scholarly productivity among faculty writing group (FWG) participants. The case study, based at a Southeastern U.S. research-intensive university, adds to extensive analyses of FWGs as a means of faculty development that positively influences the frequency of scholarly work; it is significant because unlike most studies on FWGs, this study focuses on understanding more deeply the sway that “publish or perish” directives hold on FWG participants, delving into faculty reactions to academe’s explicit pressures that professors regularly …

Prostitution And Public Policy. The Nordic Model Versus The Pimping Of Prostitution, Christopher A. Bagley Jan 2018

Prostitution And Public Policy. The Nordic Model Versus The Pimping Of Prostitution, Christopher A. Bagley

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

In this review of recent books on public policy and prostitution, Julie Bindel’s The Pimping of Prostitution is sympathetically reviewed. Her thesis, that the libertarian movement seeking to remove prostitution from legal and public policy spheres has done grave harm to the lives of boys, girls and women, is elaborated by quotations from her chapters. This book is an important resource for those who campaign for the rights of women and children to be free of commercial sexual exploitation. The reviewer offers a critical realist perspective on Bindel’s work, in advocating that future scholars should use her extensive research for …

The Ethics Of Dying : An Exploration Of The Right To Suicide And Clinician Response To Self-Determination And Suicidal Ideation Among Adults Who Struggle With Mental Illness, Shelley Bair Jan 2018

The Ethics Of Dying : An Exploration Of The Right To Suicide And Clinician Response To Self-Determination And Suicidal Ideation Among Adults Who Struggle With Mental Illness, Shelley Bair

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This paper explores the question: What beliefs, values and assumptions do social workers hold when assessing whether or not a person who is a mental health client has the right to suicide? The current literature reveals that individuals struggling with physical disorders deemed extreme and untreatable are likely to be accepted as rational grounds for suicide. Underrepresented in extant research is the critical examination of the desire to die as a rational versus pathological and treatable response to mental health concerns. The study question is examined, in part, through the lens of the Code of Ethics presented by the National …

I'Ll Hang Around As Long As You Will Let Me : Hard Country Music, The White Working Class, And The Experience Of Loss In The American Neoliberal Context, Nicholas Johnston

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This paper utilises the object relations theories of Ronald Fairbairn to conceptualise the narratives of Hard Country music, and understand how they relate to the shifting experiences of the male, white working-class in America in the latter half of the twentieth century. This paper understands the privileges that masculinity and whiteness have afforded the male, white working-class in the post-war period, and attempts to locate the relative loss felt by this population in the subsequent eras of de-industrialisation, neoliberalisation, second-wave feminism and the civil rights movement. Undertaking a thematic analysis of Hard Country music, an art form that purports to …

Changing Attitudes: The Impact Of A Disability Awareness Class, Christine Ann Masci Jan 2018

Changing Attitudes: The Impact Of A Disability Awareness Class, Christine Ann Masci

Honors Theses and Capstones

Attitudes towards people with disabilities can be either positive or negative. A undergraduate college course about disability awareness followed a structure focusing on awareness, interaction with PWD, and education in order to make a positive impact on attitudes. The study compared the disability awareness class to a general education humanities class. While results indicated that there was not a significant change in pre and post scores when comparing the classes, there was a significant change in the disability awareness class upon further analysis of data. There are additional suggestions to further the impact of the class within the disability awareness …

Gentrifried: The Foodways Of Neoliberal Urban Redevelopment In St. Louis, Elizabeth Schwartz Jan 2018

Gentrifried: The Foodways Of Neoliberal Urban Redevelopment In St. Louis, Elizabeth Schwartz

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

Settler-invader colonialism is a type of colonization in which the colonizer displaces those indigenous to the region and then settles in the area, claiming it as their own. In their paper on settler-invader colonies, Johnston and Lawson argue: A key element in settler postcolonial theory is an examination of the processes by which emigrant European settlers ‘displaced’ the indigenous occupants. This displacement took many different forms. It was physical, geographical, spiritual, cultural, and symbolic. Indigenous peoples were characteristically moved from their traditional lands onto less desirable tracts of country…the displacement was, almost as importantly, cultural and symbolic as well as …

The Risk Typology Of Healthcare Access And Its Association With Unmet Healthcare Needs In Asian Americans, Yuri Jang, Nan Sook Park, Hyunwoo Yoon, Ya-Ching Huang, Min-Kyoung Rhee, David A. Chiriboga, Miyong T. Kim

Social Work Faculty Publications

Using data from the 2015 Asian American Quality of Life Survey (N = 2,609), latent profile analysis was conducted on general (health insurance, usual place for care and income) and immigrant‐specific (nativity, length of stay in the U.S., English proficiency and acculturation) risk factors of healthcare access. Latent profile analysis identified a three‐cluster model (low‐risk, moderate‐risk and high‐risk groups). Compared with the low‐risk group, the odds of having an unmet healthcare need was 1.52 times greater in the moderate‐risk group and 2.24 times greater in the high‐risk group. Challenging the myth of model minority, the present sample of Asian …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background. An estimated 19–25% of perinatal women in low- and middle-income countries are affected by depression which, untreated, is associated with multiple health problems for mothers and children. Nonetheless, few perinatal women have access to depression care. The Thinking Healthy Programme (THP), promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), is an evidence-based, non-specialist delivered depression intervention that addresses this care gap. However, the WHO THP manual explains intervention delivery but not the antecedents to implementation. Here, we describe a principled, planned approach leading to the implementation of THP in Lima, Peru by the non-profit organization Socios En Salud with community …

Measurement Equivalence Of English Versus Native Language Versions Of The Kessler 6 (K6) Scale: An Examination In Three Asian American Groups, Yuri Jang, Daniel A. Powers, Hyunwoo Yoon, Min-Kyoung Rhee, Nan Sook Park, David A. Chiriboga Jan 2018

The use of languages other than English in population-based surveys is necessitated by the linguistic diversities in the United States. However, inclusion of multiple languages in survey data collection raises concerns about whether an instrument administered in different languages functions equivalently across groups. Using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale 6 (K6), the present study examined differential item functioning (DIF) between surveys conducted either in English or the native language of the groups of Chinese Americans (n = 622), Korean Americans (n = 471), and Vietnamese Americans (n = 513). DIF analyses using a series of multiple-indicator multiple-cause models showed that …

Implementation Of An Evidenced-Based Opioid Treatment Program To Improve Maternal-Child Outcomes In Eastern Kentucky, Jordan Rice

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

The Kentucky River Area District Health Department proposes implementation of CHARM-Kentucky, a treatment program for pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD), in eastern Kentucky. Over 115 Americans die each day from an opioid overdose, resulting in approximately 42,000 deaths in 2016. In addition to an overall increase in opioid use in recent years, the use of opioids in pregnancy has also increased from 1.19 per 1,000 hospital births in 2000 to 5.63 in 2009. Opioid use during pregnancy results in poor neonatal outcomes including: low birth weight, preterm delivery, small head circumference, increased child maltreatment, and risk for long-term …

The Glass Ceiling’S Missing Pieces: Female Migrant Domestic Workers Navigating Neoliberal Globalization In Latin America, Roselyn Cantu Jan 2018

The Glass Ceiling’S Missing Pieces: Female Migrant Domestic Workers Navigating Neoliberal Globalization In Latin America, Roselyn Cantu

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores globalization’s effects on female migrant domestic workers in Latin America by examining the socioeconomic and political status of Paraguayan and Peruvian domestic workers in Argentina. Through this research, I answer several key questions. First, how does globalization shape neoliberal markets that enforce the exploitative structures of domestic labor? Second, how is gender inequality present in governmental and social discrimination? Third, do the costs of transnational care labor outweigh the benefits? The former two questions are answered by the rising demand for care labor and resulting global care chains that fuel greater cross-border migration and statelessness of female …
