The Influence Of Previous Traumatic Experiences On Haitian Child Refugees' Conceptualization Of Fear, Jessy Guler, Courtney Guler, Dr. Judit Szente

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

This study investigates how children's experiences as Haitian refugees influence the development of atypical childhood fears. Eighteen child refugees were interviewed about their personal primary fear objects and their interpretation of fear in a series of drawing and picture observation exercises. Five of these eighteen children were Haitian refugees. Each of the refugee children had one adult representative who was interviewed about the child, the family's demographic information, and the child's previous traumatic experiences in his/her native country. The refugee children and their adult representatives' responses to the interview questions were coded and analyzed according to themes. Results suggest that …

The project protocol was approved as not human subject research by the local institutional review board. …

Comprehensive Plan For Prevention Of Abuse And Neglect Of People With Disabilities: Report, Nancy M. Fitzsimons Jan 2018

Comprehensive Plan For Prevention Of Abuse And Neglect Of People With Disabilities: Report, Nancy M. Fitzsimons

Social Work Department Publications

Victimization of people with disabilities (here forward ‘abuse and neglect’) is a serious, persistent, and pervasive problem. While Minnesota is taking steps to improve its reporting and response systems, similar efforts have not been made to prevent abuse and neglect. This Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect of People with Disabilities contains powerful examples of the problem and describes potential remedial actions. But the Plan goes further, by outlining promising actions that can be taken before the abuse and neglect occurs.

This report and the subsequent work on prevention of abuse and neglect for people with disabilities …

Inductive And Deductive: Ambiguous Labels In Qualitative Content Analysis, Mohammad Reza Armat, Abdolghader Assarroudi, Mostafa Rad, Hassan Sharifi, Abbas Heydari Jan 2018

Inductive And Deductive: Ambiguous Labels In Qualitative Content Analysis, Mohammad Reza Armat, Abdolghader Assarroudi, Mostafa Rad, Hassan Sharifi, Abbas Heydari

The Qualitative Report

The propounded dualism in Content Analysis as quantitative and qualitative approaches is widely supported and justified in nursing literature. Nevertheless, another sort of dualism is proposed for Qualitative Content Analysis, suggesting the adoption of "inductive" and/or "deductive" approaches in the process of qualitative data analysis. These approaches have been referred and labelled as "inductive" or "conventional"; and "deductive" or "directed" content analysis in the literature. Authors argue that these labels could be fallacious, and may lead to ambiguity; as in effect, both approaches are employed with different dominancy during the process of any Qualitative Content Analysis. Thus, authors suggest more …

An Environmental Scan Of The Role Of Nurses In Preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders., Diane King, Bridget Hanson, Rebecca Porter, Alexandra Edwards Jan 2018

An Environmental Scan Of The Role Of Nurses In Preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders., Diane King, Bridget Hanson, Rebecca Porter, Alexandra Edwards

Reports

Nurses are in an ideal position to talk to their patients of reproductive age about alcohol use and encourage the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Effective conversations can be efficiently included in the clinical encounter to identify alcohol misuse and offer appropriate follow-up. This report presents results of an environmental scan of resources relevant to nursing professionals and nurses' role in addressing alcohol misuse. Gaps in nursing education and practice guidelines with regard to defining the nursing role in preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies were revealed. Findings identified a need to promote adoption among nurses of evidence-based preventive practices to prevent alcohol misuse.

Beyond Stigma To Hospitality: Creating A Gracious Space For People With Mental Illness, Cindy Holtrop Jan 2018

Beyond Stigma To Hospitality: Creating A Gracious Space For People With Mental Illness, Cindy Holtrop

Symposium on Worship Archive

Worship and fellowship are sometimes difficult for people with mental illness because few people understand their experience and their needs in worship. The church’s silence can reinforce the stigma of mental illness. How can we deepen our worship practices and our language so that anyone who struggles with mental health finds space for their lament and for their longing for hope and relationships?

A Method For Assessing The Success And Failure Of Community-Level Interventions In The Presence Of Network Diffusion, Social Reinforcement, And Related Social Effects, Hsuan-Wei Lee, G. Robin Gauthier, Jerreed D. Ivanich, Lisa Wexler, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski Jan 2018

A Method For Assessing The Success And Failure Of Community-Level Interventions In The Presence Of Network Diffusion, Social Reinforcement, And Related Social Effects, Hsuan-Wei Lee, G. Robin Gauthier, Jerreed D. Ivanich, Lisa Wexler, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Prevention and intervention work done within community settings often face unique analytic challenges for rigorous evaluations. Since community prevention work (often geographically isolated) cannot be controlled in the same way other prevention programs and these communities have an increased level of interpersonal interactions, rigorous evaluations are needed. Even when the `gold standard' randomized control trials are implemented within community intervention work, the threats to internal validity can be called into question given informal social spread of information in closed network settings. A new prevention evaluation method is presented here to disentangle the social influences assumed to influence prevention effects within …

Parenting And Military Children’S Behavior: Preliminary Findings In Military Families Of New Order Era And Post-Reformation, Ruri Dindasari, Bayu A. Yulianto

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Parenting styles within military families had implications towards their children’s behav- ior. Previous studies discussed on the parenting pattern but few has associated it with the fundamental change of Indonesian military organization post Reformation era. Therefore, this article discusses the difference of parenting pattern in the military family before and after the Reformation, and its impact towards children’s behavior. The argument is based on that change of fundamental values in the Indonesian military in New Order and post Reformation era is aligned with the changing of parenting in the military family. Those changes most likely affected the children’s behavior indirectly. …

Social Control Of The Family On Juvenile Post-Drug Rehabilitation Relapse Behavior, Diah Nur Eliza Jan 2018

Social Control Of The Family On Juvenile Post-Drug Rehabilitation Relapse Behavior, Diah Nur Eliza

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article discusses social control of families to their children following drug rehabilitation. Juveniles who have completed rehabilitation programs will experience a resocialization process,i.e. socialization to a new environment or the old environment they once left. Previous studies have identified that the juvenile resocialization process after rehabilitation is influenced by the social environment and family factors. The resocialization process, alongside social control from the family, can prevent the behavior of re-using drugs or relapsing. This article is written based on a qualitative research. The primary data are obtained from juveniles aged 12-18 years, not married, and have experienced drug rehabilitation. …
