A Meta-Analysis Of Interventions To Reduce Repeat Pregnancy And Birth Among Teenagers, Lee Smithbattle, Chutima Chantamit-O-Pas, Joanne Schneider

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Almost 20% of teen mothers have more than one child before age 20. Researchers have implemented many interventions to prevent subsequent births. The purpose of this study was to examine their effectiveness in preventing repeat pregnancy/birth. We searched nine electronic databases for eligible studies conducted through September, 2014; 47 primary studies met our criteria and provided 52 comparisons. We coded the primary studies for characteristics related to study source, participants, interventions, methods, and outcomes. Using meta-analytic techniques, we calculated intervention effect sizes (ESs) on repeat pregnancy/birth within three time periods: <15 months after the first>birth, 15-35 months, and after 36-60 months. Primary studies included …

Sustainable Academic Development: An Integrative Approach To Internationalisation And Career Headway In The Higher Education, T Nawaz Feb 2018

Sustainable Academic Development: An Integrative Approach To Internationalisation And Career Headway In The Higher Education, T Nawaz

Plymouth Business School

Various strands of internationalisation have been researched over the years yet; the empirical evidence on experiences of international students in the host universities is shallow, especially in the context of international graduate teaching assistants (IGTAs). The rapidly changing environment within the higher education has implications for the construction, delivery and management of educational training for this group to ensure sustainability of higher education system. Yet little contemporary research exists investigating the adaptability of academic development and institutions to such change. This paper empirically examines the value-added impact of a teaching and learning program for GTAs using qualitative research method, which …

Personal Strengths Reported By People With Chronic Illness: A Qualitative Study, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Self-management of chronic illness can be highly demanding and people need to mobilize their personal strengths to live well with their condition. ‘Self As Instrument’ – Safe And Effective Use Of Self In Music Psychotherapy: Canadian Music Therapists’ Perceptions, Heidi Ahonen Feb 2018

‘Self As Instrument’ – Safe And Effective Use Of Self In Music Psychotherapy: Canadian Music Therapists’ Perceptions, Heidi Ahonen

Music Faculty Publications

This article introduces the results of a pilot survey conducted with accredited Canadian music therapists investigating their perceptions of personal psychotherapy and the concept of Safe and Effective Use of Self (SEUS) in the music therapy relationship. An emailed survey questionnaire covered both closed and openended questions on SEUS-related topics. The open-ended questions were analysed using the qualitative data analysis software Nvivo. Simple percentages were calculated to analyse the results of the closed-ended questions. The results suggest that music therapists engaging in psychotherapy seem to work with similar client populations, use similar theoretical approaches and techniques, and hold very similar …

American Indian Youth: A Residential Camp Program For Wellness, Francine C. Gachupin, Jennie R. Joe Feb 2018

American Indian Youth: A Residential Camp Program For Wellness, Francine C. Gachupin, Jennie R. Joe

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

The American Indian Youth Summer Wellness Camp strives to increase physical activity and healthful eating among at-risk southwest American Indian youth. The Wellness Camp is one week in duration and involves youth, aged 10-15 years. Youth who attend camp are self-selected or referred by local tribal health programs. In any given summer, 35-60 youth attend camp. Approximately 20%-33% of youth return from one year to the next. We describe our program to increase healthy lifestyles among American Indian youth at risk for overweight, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The Wellness Camp Program includes five primary components: (1) cultural capital, (2) …

Integrating Students Into Interdisciplinary Health And Health Disparities Research Teams, Tanya M. Coakley, Allyson Kelley, Robin Bartlett, Terri Shelton, Schenita D. Randolph, Debra C. Wallace

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Major initiatives by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as well as the World Health Organization have produced a large and compelling body of evidence on how to reduce health disparities, which entails having a clear understanding of how social factors shape health and healthcare outcomes. Specifically, there is a need for healthcare professionals to understand social determinants of health (e.g., low socioeconomic status, lack of health insurance, and poor education) and how these lead to disparities in health for people of minority racial and ethnic groups. Little is known about how students are developed as health disparities …

Adult Day Service Providers: Untapped Potential For Care Coordination, Nicole Ruggiano, Ellen L. Brown, Karen L. Fortuna Feb 2018

Adult Day Service Providers: Untapped Potential For Care Coordination, Nicole Ruggiano, Ellen L. Brown, Karen L. Fortuna

Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal

Adult Day Services (ADS) have become increasingly available for community-dwelling older adults who are often experiencing multiple chronic conditions and/or dementia. ADS providers spend a significant amount of time with their clients and offer the opportunity for a wealth of clinical information that can be used by primary care providers and specialists for decision-making about patient care. There are also opportunities for hospitals to coordinate care transitions with ADS providers by involving them with discharge planning with appropriate patients who require post-hospital care. However, ADS providers are often viewed as social service providers, and there is little known about the …

Barriers To Addressing Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (Hand): Community-Based Service Provider Perspectives, Renato M. Liboro, Francisco Ibanez-Carrasco, Sean B. Rourke, Andrew Easton, Claudia Medina, Daniel Pugh, Allan Rae, Lori E. Ross, Paul A. Shuper

Psychology Faculty Research

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) is an emergent public health issue in developed countries. Consequently, people living with HIV who experience HAND will increasingly require support from community-based HIV service providers. The objective of our qualitative study was to identify barriers service providers face in addressing HAND among people living with HIV. Thirty-three providers from 22 AIDS service organizations across Ontario, Canada, were interviewed. Using thematic analysis, three types of barriers were identified: (a) personal/professional, (b) service access, and (c) systemic. This paper draws attention to HAND-related obstacles that service providers encounter in their work and presents options to overcome them.

Organizational Calling And Safety: The Role Of Workload And Supervisor Support, Layla Rhiannon Mansfield Feb 2018

Organizational Calling And Safety: The Role Of Workload And Supervisor Support, Layla Rhiannon Mansfield

Dissertations and Theses

Research suggests that individuals who perceive their work as a calling (a deep passion and meaningfulness associated with a certain domain) experience a variety of positive outcomes such as occupational identification, career decidedness, and job satisfaction. Utilizing the tenets of Social Exchange Theory and the Job Demands Resources Model, I proposed that individuals with greater calling toward their occupation will report higher safety motivation and safety compliance. However, under conditions of high workload this relationship would be attenuated. Further, by the same rationale, individuals with lower calling will report lower safety outcomes, yet I proposed that this relationship is mitigated …
