Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI),1 is a significant public health issue responsible for a variety of cognitive, emotional, and somatic symptoms and deficits (3). It is unclear why some individuals appear to recover relatively quickly while others suffer prolonged symptoms and impairments (4–7). Robust clinical means of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are also lacking (8–11). Research is hindered by an inadequate classification system for traumatic brain injury (TBI) (12), “poor” study quality (13, 14), disagreement about appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria for concussion (8, 15), and an incomplete understanding of underlying pathophysiology (16–18). The heterogeneity and …

Administrators and board members at the Illinois State Board of Education recommended that schools with certain demographics hire one social worker for every 350 students. The policy has yet to be implemented despite high rates of student poverty, lagging test scores, school bullying, suspensions, and an increased number of school shootings. The Illinois State Board of Education’s social and emotional learning standards guide educators and policy makers to interact and educate each student. School social workers equipped with the necessary skill set provide services, implement district-wide social and emotional learning programs, and work with various stakeholders to monitor progress. The Effect Of Emotive Content On Knowledge Acquisition And Ethical Sense Making Using An Ill-Structured Case Example, Tina M. Souders

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Social workers encounter ethics related challenges on a daily basis. These real-world problems are incredibly complex and can produce intense emotional reactions. The use of ill-structured case examples as an instructional strategy to teach ethical lessons is well-supported in the literature, however, case examples often lack an emotional or affective component. Given the importance of crafting cases for learners, more research is needed to better understand how to construct and present case examples to enhance learning outcomes, specifically related to the influence of emotive content. This study was conducted to assess the effect of emotive content on knowledge acquisition and …

Modeling Human Migration Dynamics In Netlogo, Vikram Deshmukh

Master's Projects

Human Migration has often been the catalyst for the rise and fall of civilizations. It is imperative to study human migration dynamics if one is to gain insights into migratory behavior among human beings and how migration affects societies. There has been considerable research to study migration. This has given rise to some popular migration theories like the neoclassical approach, network migration, pull-push migration, etc. These theories shed light on some peculiar behaviors that influence the migration decision of an individual or a group, while also trying to predict the outcome of such actions. The goal of this project is …

The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment In The Economic Development Of Estonia, Stephan B. Weikert Apr 2018

The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment In The Economic Development Of Estonia, Stephan B. Weikert

Honors Thesis

In the second half of the twentieth century, many countries were able to experience tremendous economic growth by allowing for an influx of foreign investment. One such country, and the focus of this paper, is the small Baltic nation of Estonia. Under Soviet control from 1940 to 1991, Estonia existed as a closed economy, with the little trade that did occur staying mainly within the Soviet Union. After gaining independence, Estonia took measures to open their economy with the chief of these measures being policies that encouraged investment from outside firms and nations. The country realized that with a population …

The Cost Of Comforting: Phenomenological Study On Burnout Among Marriage And Family Therapists In Community Settings, Steven Razo

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Burnout is best defined as a condition consisting of symptoms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment (Maslach, 1982). It has been characterized as a process that develops through a variety of work and individual factors. Furthermore, it has been shown to impact one’s career, physical health, and mental well-being. Much of the literature on burnout has been studied on psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, with a paucity of studies focused on marriage and family therapist (MFTs). The lack of burnout literature on MFTs is in spite of their employment in many diverse clinical settings. The purpose of this …

Emotional Re-Engagement After Deployments: Using Attachment Principles With Relationship Resources For Post-Deployment Relational Enhancement, Rob Fasnacht

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The understanding of attachment theory helps one to overcome personal and relational problems that are exacerbated by past traumas. This thesis project focused on how long durations of separations, especially in a military setting, may trigger symptoms from past traumas, which may impede relational secure attachments to friends and family. A survey was crafted and answered by over 100 adults, including military members, military dependents, and non-military civilians. The results were analyzed to discover how often people were separated from loved ones, the length that perhaps caused problems, and the feelings that developed. A literary review of books and scholastic …

The Effect Of Whytry On Student Motivation, David Garrison Apr 2018

The Effect Of Whytry On Student Motivation, David Garrison

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The United States of America’s educational system came under fire in 1983 when the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report “A Nation at Risk” critiquing the system’s failings and calling for a raising of standards (Goldberg & Harvey, 1983). Since the report, the nation has seen wide-sweeping attempts at educational reform such as No Child Left Behind and the Common Core State Standards. Despite more school accountability and increased rigor there are districts, counties, and states that are witnessing a decline or lack of improvement in student achievement (Betts, Young, Zau, & Bachofer, 2016). A multitude of …

Habits Of Mind In An Uncertain World, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson Apr 2018

Habits Of Mind In An Uncertain World, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The current political and cultural polarization in the United States and other countries has significant implications for all educational institutions and for libraries and librarians. The interrelated issues of trust, credibility, and authority now present major challenges because of the uncertainty of the social media environment, competing information “bubbles,” and enduring cognitive biases. The accelerating fragmentation of the media and information ecosystems undermines communal understanding of large and complex issues that citizens must face. To address this profound societal challenge, academic librarians should collaborate with faculty members to create communities of inquiry for students—sustained “high impact practices” that address the …

Effects Of Behavior Management Training With Paraprofessionals In A Special Day Class, Leslie Castro Apr 2018

Effects Of Behavior Management Training With Paraprofessionals In A Special Day Class, Leslie Castro

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Behavior management plays a key role in a classroom to help support and create a positive environment. In the special education classroom, the teacher along with the paraprofessionals are responsible for implementing the behavior management plan for the classroom. This collaboration between the paraprofessional and the classroom teacher is essential as students with moderate to severe disabilities often have intellectual disabilities, emotional disabilities, and typically these students have existing behavior problems (Olson, Platt, & Dieker, 2008). This single case A-B-C design study investigated the role of paraprofessionals use of break cards in a special education classroom. The four paraprofessionals (participants) …

Since the beginning of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Children’s Mental Health Initiative in 1993, the system of care (SOC) framework has provided the foundation for community- based service development in the United States and has focused on improving the lives of children, youth, and young adults who experience the most complex mental health needs and their families. In recent years, with greater understanding of early psychosis, the SOC framework has expanded to include young adults presenting with signs of early psychosis.

The SOC approach brings children, youth, and young adults with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED)1 and …
