Gender Nonconforming Expression And Binary Thinking: Understanding How Implicit Bias Becomes Explicit In The Legal System, Considering The Shooting Death Of Philando Castile, Patrick C. Brayer

Faculty Works

Theorists, poets, and artists are taking the lead in advancing the conversation about gender fluidity and the plight of people with non-binary gender identities. This essay is about what practitioners who combat implicit bias in the legal profession can learn from artists and thinkers on the cutting edge of gender non-conforming expression. Understanding how individuals stigmatize, and at times discriminate against, gender fluid people by limited and binary thinking is an important progression in comprehending how implicit bias (specifically against people of color) becomes explicit and influences legal actors including law enforcement and jurors. The tragic shooting of Philando Castile …

World Changers Made Here

In Jeremiah 1:5, God declares the following over Jeremiah:

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations” (NLT).

A quick Google search will likely bring up thousands of books and resources geared toward helping people find their identity. For many of us, questions regarding our calling, identity and purpose become daily rhetorical reminders of how critical it is to figure out our place in the world. In the midst of that often stressful and daunting search, we can find comfort …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Sylvia Plath And Virginia Woolf, Molly King Apr 2018

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Sylvia Plath And Virginia Woolf, Molly King

Honors Theses

Previous research indicates a correlation between creativity and psychopathology, particularly among female authors and poets, possibly heightening this group’s risk for suicide. This article aims to provide a psychohistory containing psychological evaluations and hypothetical treatments plans for two prominent female writers, Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf both of whom completed suicide. Primary source material such as Plath’s journals, Woolf’s diaries, and related autobiographies were used as supplemental data for the clinical assessment. Plath is argued to have hypothetically met today’s DSM-5 criteria for Major Depressive Disorder, and Woolf for Bipolar I Disorder in addition to trauma-related difficulties.

Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane Apr 2018

Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane

Faculty Publications

Nearly 5.1 million children younger than age 18 live with at least one undocumented parent, about 7% of the U.S. child population. Between 2010 and 2013, an estimated 300,000 parents of U.S. citizen children were deported. Raising children in the context of deportation risk increases overall parenting stress for undocumented Latino parents. To investigate this and understand the experience of undocumented parenting, the authors interviewed 70 undocumented parents in two Southwest cities from 2012 to 2013. The authors frame their analysis using the lens of the problem of “illegality.” There are three domains of stressors associated with parenting in the …

Jails Are Not Treatment Centers, Michael Henning, Rachel Mattick, Cali Turbes Apr 2018

Jails Are Not Treatment Centers, Michael Henning, Rachel Mattick, Cali Turbes

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Currently, in Minnesota alone, there are more individuals with severe mental illness being incarcerated than hospitalized. Blue Earth County's Yellow Line Project (YLP) reported that 83.7% of individuals screened positive for mental illness prior to being booked into jail . Not only does incarcerating individuals with mental illness fill our jails, it prolongs mental illness and time spent away from treatment. Jail diversion programs divert individuals with mental health disorders from the criminal justice system and into appropriate treatment when applicable. For those individuals ineligible for diversion from the criminal justice system, care coordination would be ideal to assist in …

A Model Of Employment Supports For Job Seekers With Intellectual Disabilities, Alberto Migliore, Kelly Nye-Lengerman, Oliver Lyons, Jennifer Bose, John Butterworth, Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

ThinkWork! Publications

Interviews with 16 employment consultants-triangulated with job seekers, family members, and supervisors-revealed a model of employment supports aligned with the elements described in the literature, although with an added emphasis on (a) building trust as a key element starting from day one; (b) a circular process converging on the job match; (c) and flexible intensity of supports. The model can be used for improving clarity in communication with employment consultants about effective employment support practices for assisting job seekers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What?
Analysis to describe the relationship between state employment system characteristics and employment outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Why?
To better understand higher-performing state employment systems.

How?
Researchers included individual indicators from 2013 for each state from its IDD and vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies. We also used American Community Survey data that looked at employment outcomes and education for individuals with cognitive disability between the ages of 22 to 30, i.e. individuals who recently aged out of eligibility for services under IDEA. The resulting composite indicator (CI) represents overall state employment system performance.

Financial Capabilities In Indian Country, Molly Tovar Ed.D, Lindsey Manshack Mph Apr 2018

Financial Capabilities In Indian Country, Molly Tovar Ed.D, Lindsey Manshack Mph

Buder Center for American Indian Studies Research

If offered an opportunity to save money via a formal financial education program, will young people participate in the programming and open a savings account? That was the key research question motivating this pilot study, which was implemented among youth aged 11 to 15 years who self-identified as American Indian. This pilot study was conducted in partnership with a local financial institution, a middle school (Grades 6, 7, and 8), and an Indian education program. It investigated the uptake of savings accounts as tools for youth development and financial inclusion among American Indians in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Two staff members …

Factors Affecting Care Quality In South Dakota Nursing Homes, Brice Cowman Apr 2018

Factors Affecting Care Quality In South Dakota Nursing Homes, Brice Cowman

Honors Thesis

Research has shown that current healthcare infrastructure is unsuited to fulfill the needs of the quickly growing population of retired Americans, a large portion of whom will require some form of long term service or support. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to determine how certain factors such as; the incidence of use of various classes of drugs, staffing measures and education of staff, local population, and facility size relate to the overall quality of care in South Dakota nursing homes. Population data was collected from the 2010 U.S. Census and specific nursing home data was …
