From Orphan To Child Of God: Pentecostal Theologizing As A Channel Of Social Transformation In Mozambique, Jeremy Bone, Samuel Lee Apr 2018

From Orphan To Child Of God: Pentecostal Theologizing As A Channel Of Social Transformation In Mozambique, Jeremy Bone, Samuel Lee

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Heidi and Rolland Baker, founders of Mozambican-based Iris Global, have been influential in developing a distinctively pentecostal framework for holistic mission. While evangelism and social work are now widely seen as integrated processes, pentecostalism demands attention also to the supernatural. This paper posits that the theological convictions of the Bakers have served as a launching pad for their holistic care of orphans in Mozambique. Because pentecostal movements are rooted in experience, pneumatic theologizing presupposes praxis. This paper will initially examine three theological impulses at the core of Iris Global: pentecostalism, revivalism, and incarnational love. These theological impulses are then weaved …

Empowering Victims Of Sex Trafficking: Developing A Practice Of Self-Care, Samantha Foster Apr 2018

Empowering Victims Of Sex Trafficking: Developing A Practice Of Self-Care, Samantha Foster

Theses and Graduate Projects

Sex trafficking (ST) is on the rise globally, nationally, and locally. This modern day form of slavery most often victimizes women and children, stripping them of their personal power. The traumatizing crime that is sex trafficking affects its victims physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and has many negative ramifications on communities. Minnesota is leading the Nation in addressing this human rights violation by implementing and enforcing the Safe Harbor Law. Guided by concepts of Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, trauma-informed care (TIC) practices, current literature support, and in cooperation with shelters like Brittany’s Place in Minnesota, nurses may utilize …

Differentiated Reactions To Payment For Ecosystem Service Programs In The Columbia River Basin: A Qualitative Study Exploring Irrigation District Characteristics As Local Common-Pool Resource Management Institutions In Oregon, Usa, Spencer Thomas Plumb, Travis Paveglio, Kelly West Jones, Brett Alan Miller, Dennis R. Becker

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Student Research

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs are increasingly employed to encourage individual actors to preserve and/or restore environmentally beneficial instream flows in freshwater ecosystems. However, the success of these PES programs has been mixed across geographic locations and the influence of local resource management institutions remains unclear. In the western U.S.A. little is known about the role of irrigation districts regarding these water transactions. This study addresses that deficit by using existing knowledge about common-pool resource management characteristics to explore the role of irrigation districts in PES programs that incentivize water transactions in the state of Oregon. We conducted 20 …

The Influence Of Religion On The Criminal Behavior Of Emerging Adults, Christopher Salvatore, Gabriel Rubin Apr 2018

The Influence Of Religion On The Criminal Behavior Of Emerging Adults, Christopher Salvatore, Gabriel Rubin

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Recent generations of young adults are experiencing a new life course stage: emerging adulthood. During this ‘new’ stage of the life course, traditional social bonds and turning points may not be present, may be delayed, or may not operate in the same manner as they have for prior generations. One such bond, religion, is examined here. Focusing on the United States, emerging adulthood is investigated as a distinct stage of the life course. The criminality of emerging adults is presented, a theoretical examination of the relationship between religion and crime is provided, the role of religion in emerging adults’ lives …

Montana: The Last Best Place To Die By Suicide – An Evaluation Of Montana’S Fragmented Prevention Efforts., Kim Spurzem

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Montana has been a leader in the nation in deaths by suicide for over 40 years, making it one of Montana’s largest public health priorities. In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 18 in the state of Montana. As of 2017, 10% of all 9th-12th-grade students in Montana self-report to attempting suicide in the past year (16% for Native youth and 20% for youth with disabilities). Montanans risk factors for suicide continue as they age and most deaths by suicide in Montana are white (91%), men (79%), …

Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren, Ruth Ann Phillips Apr 2018

Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren, Ruth Ann Phillips

Academic Festival

While once a phenomenon concentrated to poor families, grandparents co-parenting grandchildren is becoming increasingly common in contemporary American society across class categories. There are ranges of reasons why grandparents are finding themselves in a parenting role including dual earner parents who are working more often, single parents needing extra help, or young parents who are overwhelmed by parenting responsibilities. While there is an increasing body of literature exploring the impacts of grandparent centered kinship care on children, there is comparatively little research focused on the impact of co-parenting on grandparents who transition into helping raise their grandchildren just a few …

Students' Attitudes Towards Mental Illness: A Comparative Analysis, Anna Grace Mclaughlin Apr 2018

Students' Attitudes Towards Mental Illness: A Comparative Analysis, Anna Grace Mclaughlin

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The number of people with mental illnesses continues to increase greatly, yet these remain some of the most stigmatized illnesses in the U.S. The stigma held about mental illness can affect the way individuals are treated in society. This study examinines attitudes towards mental illness among college students. Given that attitudes may vary by areas of study, this research specifically compares social work and non-social work students’ attitudes. Comparing the attitudes of social work students with those of other students could gauge the adequacy of the education that social work students are receiving on mental illness. The study employed a …

Exploring Screen Time Habits And The Life Empowerment Divide At An Hbcu, Kim Smith, Tobin Walton, Alvin Keyes Apr 2018

Exploring Screen Time Habits And The Life Empowerment Divide At An Hbcu, Kim Smith, Tobin Walton, Alvin Keyes

Faculty Publications

College students at a historically black university used their social media accounts to recruit 1,232 of their peers to take an online survey that explored digital screen time and social media habits at this HBCU. The study revealed that 51% devoted daily screen time to academic empowerment, 31% devoted it to leisure, and 11% devoted it to life empowerment. Sixty-six percent said they spent too much screen time on leisure and not enough on life empowerment, i.e., using resources in the digital world to improve their lives. The paper explored the divide, its implications, and how to narrow it.

Where Are We Losing Them? An Exploration Of Barriers To Buy-In Of Higher Education Responsible Employee Policies, Danielle Snow Apr 2018

Where Are We Losing Them? An Exploration Of Barriers To Buy-In Of Higher Education Responsible Employee Policies, Danielle Snow

Honors Theses

Sexual violence is a pervasive issue on college campuses across the U.S. In order to address this issue, the U.S. federal government has implemented certain acts and guidance to prevent violence and promote campus safety. One of the most controversial pieces of guidance is the responsible employee policy. In theory, this reporting system would allow students to have better access to victim support services and allow campuses to have more accurate data as to the reality of sexual violence happening on their campuses. In practice, however, this has not been the case for many individual institutional policies. Instead, many institutional …

Disclosing An Eating Disorder: A Situational Analysis Of Online Accounts, Emily P. Williams, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Alana Ireland Apr 2018

Disclosing An Eating Disorder: A Situational Analysis Of Online Accounts, Emily P. Williams, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Alana Ireland

The Qualitative Report

Disclosing a mental illness can be difficult, especially for those affected by eating disorders. Individuals impacted by eating disorders often worry that disclosing their situation may lead to fear, judgment, and stigmatization. Online eating disorder communities have become increasingly popular, hosting thousands of users worldwide, and may be safe places for individuals with eating disorders to communicate and connect. In this postmodern study, we utilized situational analysis to examine online accounts on publically accessible websites where individuals discussed disclosing eating disorders. Situational Analysis utilizes illustrative mapping techniques to demonstrate the complexity of the situation of inquiry, allowing researchers to highlight …

Cruel And Unusual: A Look Into Prisoner Mental Health Care, Adonia Delgado Hipp Apr 2018

Cruel And Unusual: A Look Into Prisoner Mental Health Care, Adonia Delgado Hipp

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

The United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country (Blumstein & Wallman, 2000). In fact, the rate of incarceration is more than five times higher than most of the countries in the world. Recent studies indicate that “Crowded living quarters, lack of privacy, increased risk of victimization, and solitary confinement within the institution have been identified as strong correlates for self-harm and adaptation challenges for those with mental health conditions in prison settings” (Gonzalez et al., 2014). One of the greatest persistent injustices of modern criminal law is that not only are poor people and people of …
