Human Trafficking And Local Law Enforcement, Elizabeth Chesbrough

Honors Projects

“To protect our kids, we’ve given law enforcement new tools to fight human trafficking (Brett Guthrie).” Though Brett’s hopeful sentiment portrays a police force that is ready to battle the epidemic of modern day slavery, research has shown that local officers are sorely uneducated on the subject. The main focus of this paper is the link between the prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S. and the lack of local law enforcement training on the issue. The first section will be a brief overview of human trafficking, defining and discussing a few relevant details about it first. Next, I will …

The What, Where, How And Why: A Review Of Being Ethnographic: A Guide To The Theory And Practice Of Ethnography, Jetlexis Carlos

The Qualitative Report

In Being Ethnographic: A Guide to the Theory and Practice of Ethnography, Raymond Madden presents ethnography in a way that is easily understood by describing real life experiences from both his own work and others working in the field. This book is a great resource to guide those who wish to conduct ethnographic research or need a learning tool to understand the underlying nature of ethnographic research. Madden links the way ethnographic research is done to how ethnographic research is thought about. It is a great introduction to the “what,” “where,” “how,” and “why” of practicing of ethnography.

Emotional Disorder Guidelines And The Educational Placement Of Students With Emotional Disorders, Linda J. Spencer Apr 2018

Emotional Disorder Guidelines And The Educational Placement Of Students With Emotional Disorders, Linda J. Spencer

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Decades of research indicate that students with Emotional Disorders (ED) are often not identified and therefore do not receive the support they require to meet their academic and socio-emotional needs. Federal guidelines and definitions of Emotional Disorders are ambiguous, and this affects the identification and educational placement of students with emotional disorders. This quantitative research study examines the relationships between the clarity of Emotional Disorder guidelines and the educational placement of students with emotional disorders. This study consisted of an anonymous survey of special educators and special education administrators. There were strong, significant, and positive correlations between the clarity of …

Should Children Have A Voice In Custodial Placement?, Emily Moore

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

The aim of this paper is to bring to attention the custodial placement of children with divorced parents. Essentially, this paper looks at the importance of involving the child in the process of deciding on a parenting schedule. This is done by examining how children are personally affected by this decision and arguments made to not involve children. Upon examination of these ideas, it becomes clear that during a divorce case children should be given the opportunity to share their opinion on the parenting schedule.

Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities As Advocates For Immigrants, Lindsey Moore

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

the past decade, immigration policy has become the subject of a fiery nationwide debate, with policymakers and lobbyists going head-to-head as policy reform is discussed. As a worrisome trend has emerged in which national security concerns are being prioritized over human rights concerns, it has become necessary that social workers get involved, as well. Due to the professional values and ethical standards laid out in the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics, social workers are ethically obligated to engage in this discussion and advocate for fair and just policies on behalf of immigrants. Based off an understanding of …

Giving Voice To The Voiceless, Victoria L. Palmer

Social Work Theses

The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of matriculated, full time college students from a medium-sized Catholic, Liberal Arts College in the Northeast who identify as multi-racial or multi-ethnic, specifically identifying as coming from a white and non-white mixed background. In the ever-changing political climate in the United States, those who identify as mixed white and non-white backgrounds feel conflicted in how they ethnically or racially identify. Emerging adulthood (ages 18-25), and college experiences, are important years for identity development. This study tells the untold narratives of mixed non-white and white multi-racial, multi-ethnic individuals.

A Pathway To Psychological Difficulty: Perceived Chronic Social Adversity And Its Symptomatic Reactions, Cody Ding, Jingqiu Zhang, Dong Yang

Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works

In this paper, we attempt to predict and explain psychological maladjustment or difficulty. Specifically, we discuss the concept of perceived chronic social adversity, and we expect that such perceived chronic social adversity may potentially lead to chronic stress responses. Accordingly, we propose the symptomatic reactions of perceived chronic social adversity. We put forward a set of hypotheses regarding the relationships between perceived chronic social adversity and those chronic stress responses, and we further hypothesize a mediating role of individualized negative essentialism brought by perceived chronical social adversity. Resilience and individual differences in the ability to cope with perceived adversity are …

The literature on the role of (social) entrepreneurship for the vocational integration of refugees is scare. Drawing on examples of successful (social) enterprises, this paper aims to address this gap by proposing a typology of refugee and refugee-related (social) entrepreneurship, using Germany as main example. It aims to provide a framework for future research on these kinds of entrepreneurship by identifying three types of entrepreneurship for refugees and two by refugees, namely social intrapreneurship, intermediary concepts and job creation for refugees as well as refugee entrepreneurship and refugee social entrepreneurship by refugees.

Conflicting Definitions Of Relief: Life In Refugee Camps After The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906, Emily Neis Apr 2018

Conflicting Definitions Of Relief: Life In Refugee Camps After The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906, Emily Neis

Voces Novae

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake is infamous for decimating the city and leaving a quarter of a million people homeless. Afterwards, the American Red Cross redefined “relief” in its efforts to help San Francisco’s refugees, and it tested its new progressive relief methods within the refugee camps. Previously, the charity organization advocated personal involvement and moral evaluation of disaster victims; relief was viewed as feminine and subjective. After the earthquake, officials sought to make relief more efficient, masculine, and objective through favoring victims who were already self-supporting. Refugees who contested progressive views were derided as socialists. Ultimately, conflicting definitions of …

The California Plan: California's Suffrage Strategy And Its Effects In Other States And The National Suffrage Campaign, Lauren Abel Apr 2018

The California Plan: California's Suffrage Strategy And Its Effects In Other States And The National Suffrage Campaign, Lauren Abel

Voces Novae

The women’s suffrage movement was one of the longest civil rights movements in American history. Its influence spread throughout the country, yet the most scholarship today focuses on suffragettes’ efforts from the East Coast even though suffragettes from Western states, specifically California, also participated in the campaign. During their campaign, Californian activists developed a new strategy that united women of different social classes who worked together to achieve their common goal of obtaining the vote. Their strategy won them state suffrage rights in 1911 and reinvigorated the stagnant national suffrage movement.

"Unbroken Towards The Sea": The National Trust And The Rise Of Coastal Preservation In Late 19th And 20th Century Britain, Chelsea Judy

Voces Novae

This paper explores the formative years of the British National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty from its founding in 1895 to 1938. It specifically investigates the rise of the Trust’s interest in preserving Britain’s coastline, which was originally an afterthought when compared to other areas of natural beauty. Ultimately, the years between 1895 and 1938 proved extremely pivotal in the development of the Trust’s preservationist ethic in its policy approach towards protecting coastline and set the stage for the sweeping coastal environmental movement that would take place in 1965 with Operation Neptune.

A New Welfare Regime In The Making? Paternalistic Welfare Pragmatism In China, Ka Ho Mok, Jiwei Qian Apr 2018

A New Welfare Regime In The Making? Paternalistic Welfare Pragmatism In China, Ka Ho Mok, Jiwei Qian

staff_fulltext

Since 2003, the Chinese government has been increasing its social expenditure and initiated new social welfare programmes to provide universal social protection and meet citizens’ welfare needs. This article uses the wider socio-economic and socio-political contexts to critically examine whether there is a new welfare regime on the rise in China, with a particular reference to whether the increase in social expenditure has really marked a new welfare philosophy or prompted the transformation of China into a protective welfare regime. By analysing prefecture-level data for government expenditures in education, health, social security and assistance programmes between 2003 and 2012, we …

Developing Cultural Intelligence And Transformational Leadership Through Participation In Short-Term Study Abroad Programs, Rebecca Whitham

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

This paper explores the concepts of cultural intelligence (CQ) and transformational leadership in the context of graduate students’ participation in short term study abroad programs offered at a small, private university. While existing literature is explored, the findings discovered through a self-conducted research study, indicate that participation in these particular programs raised levels of motivational and behavioral CQ significantly amongst participants. The author utilized a pre and post-test design to survey two programs, one that traveled to Northern Ireland and the other to Brazil. In connection with the rise of CQ, therein lies the possibility for participants to adopt characteristics …
