Crossover Youth Prevention: Predictors Of Youth Crossover From Child Welfare To Juvenile Justice, Marcus R. Crawford
Crossover Youth Prevention: Predictors Of Youth Crossover From Child Welfare To Juvenile Justice, Marcus R. Crawford
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
By some estimates, as many as 60% of youth in the juvenile justice system have previous experience in the child welfare system, with delinquency rates among youth in foster care about 50% higher than among youth not involved in foster care (Ryan & Testa, 2005; Sickmund & Puzzanchera, 2014). Identifying factors that impact crossing over from the child protective system into the juvenile justice system is essential to developing interventions targeting youth success and derailing the criminal pathway of many United States adolescents. Decades of research have shown that youth who enter foster care are at an increased risk for …

Bringing Emotional Intelligence To The Jesuit Business Academy: A Program For Deepening The Conversation Among Students, Advisers And Faculty, Nadeje Alexandre, Bill Weis
Bringing Emotional Intelligence To The Jesuit Business Academy: A Program For Deepening The Conversation Among Students, Advisers And Faculty, Nadeje Alexandre, Bill Weis
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
An innovative program for teaching emotional intelligence to graduate business students and their academic advisers is deepening relationships between advisers and advisees, raising self- and social-awareness in the advising space, and bringing a shared sense of civility to the greater campus culture. It further creates effective coaching opportunities in student/adviser relationships, imbuing those relationships with curiosity, caring, trust, safety and civility, as well as with a common language and common discourse built upon mutual respect, truth telling, and genuine empathy. This discussion looks at the visible outcomes for our students and advisers, both within the business school and across campus, …

Domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) is the commercial sexual exploitation of a minor citizen or legal resident within United States borders. The literature about the experiences of DMST victims is an amalgamation of force, exploitation, and sometimes the exercise of personal, if constrained, agency in the decision to exchange sex for money or goods. Unfortunately, federal and local policies do not make much room for the nuances of victim experience, in which multiple oppressive factors may contribute to DMST victimization, or different types of DMST victimization. Instead, officials tend to view DMST as a monolithic crime, rather than a problem …

Foodborne illness is a serious and preventable public health problem affecting 1 in 6 Americans with cost estimates over $50 billion annually. Local health departments license and inspect restaurants to ensure food safety and respond to reports of suspected foodborne illness. The City of St. Louis Department of Health adopted the HealthMap Foodborne Dashboard (Dashboard), a tool that monitors Twitter for tweets about food poisoning in a geographic area and allows the health department to respond. We evaluated the implementation by interviewing employees of the City of St. Louis Department of Health involved in food safety. We interviewed epidemiologists, environmental …
Rethinking Family-Court Prosecutors: Elected And Agency Prosecutors And Prosecutorial Discretion In Juvenile Delinquency And Child Protection Cases, Josh Gupta-Kagan
Rethinking Family-Court Prosecutors: Elected And Agency Prosecutors And Prosecutorial Discretion In Juvenile Delinquency And Child Protection Cases, Josh Gupta-Kagan
University of Chicago Law Review
Like criminal prosecutors, family-court prosecutors have immense power. Determining which cases to prosecute and which to divert or dismiss goes to the heart of the delinquency system’s balance between punishment and rehabilitation of children and the child protection system’s spectrum of family interventions. For instance, the 1990s shift to prosecute (rather than dismiss or divert) about 10 percent more delinquency cases annually is as significant a development as any other. Yet scholars have not examined the legal structures for these charging decisions or family-court prosecutors’ authority in much depth.
This Article shows how family-court prosecutors’ roles have never been fully …

Applying Place-Based Social-Ecological Research To Address Water Scarcity: Insights For Future Research, Jodi Brandt
Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations
Globally, environmental and social change in water-scarce regions challenge the sustainability of social-ecological systems. WaterSES, a sponsored working group within the Program for Ecosystem Change and Society, explores and compares the social-ecological dynamics related to water scarcity across placed-based international research sites with contrasting local and regional water needs and governance, including research sites in Spain and Sweden in Europe, South Africa, China, and Alabama, Idaho, Oklahoma, and Texas in the USA. This paper aims to provide a commentary on insights into conducting future solutions-oriented research on water scarcity based on the understanding of the social-ecological dynamics of water scarce …

A Strategic Approach To Employee Retention At Nebraska Families Collaborative, Rachel Walters
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Nebraska Families Collaborative (NFC) is a nonprofit organization that supports children and families who are at risk, in eastern Nebraska. They offer a variety of services with the goal of moving children toward safety, permanency and well-being. Organizations such as NFC rely heavily on the commitment of the employees to carry out their mission, as do many other non-profit social service agencies across the country. The overall goal of the project was to identify reasons for high turnover and to identify potential solutions to reduce turnover and increase retention in the workplace at NFC. The main objectives were to analyze …

Assessment Of Caffeine And Sugar Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among Adult Pregnant Women In An Urban Medical Center In Nebraska, Shilpa Karanjit
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Abstract
Background: Unhealthy non-alcoholic drinks for pregnant women include beverages with high caffeine and added sugar. High caffeine intake during pregnancy has been reported to be linked with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as miscarriages and stillbirth. In addition, high sugar-sweetened-beverages (SSBs) intake increases the risk of maternal obesity that is associated with many serious health problems in both mother and the fetus such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, congenital anomalies, macrosomia, childhood obesity and cardiac diseases. Maternal obesity also increases the cost of prenatal and postnatal healthcare by increasing the need of surgical and anesthetic care for mother and intensive care …

Building Indian Country’S Future Through Food, Agriculture, Infrastructure, And Economic Development In The 2018 Farm Bill, Janie Simms Hipp, Colby D. Duren, Erin Parker
Journal of Food Law & Policy
With the potential of approximately $1 trillion in spending over 10 years in rural America, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs authorized by the Farm Bill have the ability to build and support thriving economies in rural America. Nowhere is this potential greater, or needed, than in rural Tribal communities. This paper will examine why the unique circumstances of Tribal governments, individual Native American food producers, and Tribal citizens necessitate changes in several USDA programs to serve Indian Country. Further, it will review several policy changes in various titles of the next Farm Bill reauthorization that will help empower …

The Influence Of Parental Control And Parent-Child Relational Qualities On Adolescent Internet Addiction: A 3-Year Longitudinal Study In Hong Kong, Daniel T. L. Shek, Xiaoqin Zhu, Cecilia M. S. Ma
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
This study investigated how parental behavioral control, parental psychological control, and parent-child relational qualities predicted the initial level and rate of change in adolescent internet addiction (IA) across the junior high school years. The study also investigated the concurrent and longitudinal effects of different parenting factors on adolescent IA. Starting from the 2009/2010 academic year, 3,328 Grade 7 students (Mage = 12.59 ± 0.74 years) from 28 randomly selected secondary schools in Hong Kong responded on a yearly basis to a questionnaire measuring multiple constructs including socio-demographic characteristics, perceived parenting characteristics, and IA. Individual growth curve (IGC) analyses …
Middle-Class / White / Woman: The Unexamined Center In Expressive Therapies Education, Kelly J. Reed
Middle-Class / White / Woman: The Unexamined Center In Expressive Therapies Education, Kelly J. Reed
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Counseling psychology and the expressive therapies are majority-white, majority-female professions, and whiteness is the unnamed, normative center of expressive therapies and drama therapy education. As a middle-class white woman, I posit that by failing to examine this center we risk perpetuating the same systems that exacerbate our own and our clients' suffering. I review the available literature and investigate the socio-historical, cultural, and political significance of whiteness and the historical role of white women in maintaining oppressive systems. I then explore the identity reconstruction process for white people seeking to divest from whiteness, specifically looking at the key emotions of …

Entering The Inclusive Space: An Autoethnography Of A Future Educator, Lindsey Reuter
Entering The Inclusive Space: An Autoethnography Of A Future Educator, Lindsey Reuter
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Inclusive Education is the practice of educating all students in one classroom. Students with disabilities or who qualify for special education are members of regular education classrooms, and remain in the classroom for as much of the day as possible. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) legalized that schools provide free and appropriate education, as well as educate students in the least restrictive environment. The least restrictive environment is in the general education classroom. This legislation helped to increase the prevalence of inclusion in schools.
This research represents my development as a future educator. I entered Syracuse University as in …
The Reality Of The Refugee Crisis In Italy: A Look Into The Lives Of Illegitimate Refugees And The Unofficial Organizations That Support Them, Cole Mcquirk
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
The words written on the United States of America’s famous Statue of Liberty, written by poet Emma Lazarus over a century ago:
Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. . . .
America and Europe alike have forgotten the sacred words that gave hope to so many 100 years ago. Many use phrases like “floods of people” or “swarms” to describe those who leave their countries for a life in the Western world. Which of the refugees welcomed into the most powerful country in the world were …
