Conceptualizing Allyship As An Actionable Construct In Higher Education, Shannon Radford May 2018

Conceptualizing Allyship As An Actionable Construct In Higher Education, Shannon Radford

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This research intends to re-conceptualize allyship as an actionable construct. Previous research conducted on allyship primarily focuses on development and motivation. Although action is often identified as a component of allyship, previous research has only briefly touched upon this topic. In such a tumultuous political climate, this gap in research is distressing. With hate groups on the rise, it has become increasingly important for allyship to become synonymous with action. As institutions of higher education can play a crucial role in providing an actionable definition of allyship and fostering it in campus communities, this study focuses on identifying actions exhibited …

Traditional Art Therapy Techniques Versus Digital Art Therapy Techniques: A Comparison Using Sand Play, Kaitlyn Ralston May 2018

Traditional Art Therapy Techniques Versus Digital Art Therapy Techniques: A Comparison Using Sand Play, Kaitlyn Ralston

Honors Theses

Art Therapy is a growing field that has its basis in tactile experiences, whether those experiences involve paint, clay, sand, paper, or anything else you can imagine. These techniques all focus on the tactile nature of the process to facilitate therapeutic practices. However, many who would benefit greatly from art therapy are unable to utilize the tactile methods due to sensory limitations. Thus, the problem of how to facilitate art therapy with these clients arises. One solution to the problem would be to look to the digital realm. Unfortunately, not many digital applications exist to facilitate these art therapy practices. …

The Influence Of Therapist-Patient Religious/Spiritual Congruence On Satisfaction With Therapy: A Review Of Research, Tammy E. Henderson May 2018

The Influence Of Therapist-Patient Religious/Spiritual Congruence On Satisfaction With Therapy: A Review Of Research, Tammy E. Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this review was to examine the relationship between mental health and religion and/or spirituality. Specifically, it was believed that religion and spiritual congruence had a positive influence on satisfaction with therapy. Indeed, the literature reviewed suggests that therapists should be more open to addressing a patient's religious and/or spiritual beliefs as it could lead to more attuned therapeutic sessions. The importance of congruence between patient and therapist is a factor that can impact the therapeutic alliance, based on the literature, this concept appears to hold true for those that are or are not religiously and/or spiritually inclined.

The Qualitative Report

For reproductive-age women living with HIV, birth spacing allows for optimization of maternal health and viral suppression to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. We conducted semi-structured informational interviews to explore use of contraception for birth spacing. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Audio files were reviewed to capture non-explicit data. We interviewed 18 multiparous HIV positive women. All described experiences with at least one contraceptive method. Six themes emerged: Burden of contraception, Failure of birth control, Impact of youth and lack of life experience, Community beliefs about birth control, Lack of partner cooperation, and Altruism. Women viewed birth spacing favorably. Young …

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr. May 2018

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since 2014, 42 states have adopted charter school legislation. Research has been conducted on charter school effectiveness and legislative adoption. However, limitations in the research exist regarding school choice in that studies address inequalities and outcomes at the school level, with limited attention to the state-level policy environment. Additionally, research does not consider variations in state school choice policy nor does it link policy differences to equitable educational outcomes.

This descriptive study described and categorized the variation of state charter school polices and explored differences in state level education finance, student demographics and academic outcomes, and school type characteristics. A …

Achieving Integrated Care For Older People: What Kind Of Ship? Comment On “Achieving Integrated Care For Older People: Shuffling The Deckchairs Or Making The System Watertight For The Future?”, Rod Sheaff

Peninsula Medical School

This paper considers an implication of the idea that proposals for integrated care for older people should start from a focus on the patient, consider co-production solutions to the problems of care fragmentation, and be at a system-wide, cross-organisational level. It follows that the analysis, design and therefore evaluation of integrated care projects should be based upon the journeys which older patients with multiple chronic conditions usually have to make from professional to professional and service to service. A systematic realistic review of recent research on integrated care projects identified a number of key mechanisms for care integration, including multidisciplinary …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Online counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs are growing in number, however little research exists comparing online and on-campus student outcomes. This study examined the impact of program modality (online versus on-campus) on Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam subscale scores of 451 students with an emphasis on the Helping Relationships subscale. Significant results included on-campus students performing higher on the Helping Relationships subscale and online students performing higher on the Career Development subscale. Analysis found no statistical difference on the remaining six subscales. Implications for counselor education are discussed.

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

In this exploratory study, the authors surveyed clinical supervisors (n = 138) regarding their knowledge of their supervisees’ problems of professional competency (PPC). Findings suggest the majority have observed a supervisee with PPC working towards licensure. Further, those that have supervised a supervisee with PPC have been negatively impacted by these interactions (e.g., increased their workload, increased their stress).

A Cross-Cultural Examination Of The Effect Of Employer Support On Employee Productivity, Shawn Tuman, Haley Lipton May 2018

A Cross-Cultural Examination Of The Effect Of Employer Support On Employee Productivity, Shawn Tuman, Haley Lipton

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The purpose of this creative, collaborative, capstone project is to conduct a cross-cultural examination of the effect of employer support on employee productivity by compiling, examining, and synthesizing conclusions from existing research. In a world of growing globalization and technological innovation, the speed of productivity is often the cornerstone that differentiates successful businesses from unsuccessful businesses, providing a competitive advantage to the quick while the others fall behind. Often this increased level of efficiency comes at a cost beyond the price of the product and the salary of employees, a deeper, psychological cost. By reviewing research focused in the United …

Does The Relationship Matter?: Empathy, Hostility, And Drinking Outcomes In The Combine Study, Anthony J. O'Sickey May 2018

Does The Relationship Matter?: Empathy, Hostility, And Drinking Outcomes In The Combine Study, Anthony J. O'Sickey

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a pervasive problem in the United States, costing approximately 250 billion dollars in 2010. Several decades of rigorous scientific approaches to treatment have yielded several effective treatments for AUD, however, the human and economic cost continues to rise. Recently, Moyers and colleagues reported that higher than average therapist empathy within-subjects was significantly associated with reductions in drinking following treatment. The finding of a within-subjects effect indicates that either a client or therapist characteristic may be responsible for the variability in empathy within client therapist dyads. There is evidence to suggest that client levels of hostility …

Coming Home: A Recovery-Oriented Intermodal Focusing Group For Adults With Mental Illness. Development Of A Method., Liana Van De Water May 2018

Coming Home: A Recovery-Oriented Intermodal Focusing Group For Adults With Mental Illness. Development Of A Method., Liana Van De Water

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The recovery model in mental health treatment promotes hope, resiliency, empowerment and agency of the client. All too often these principles are overlooked in favor of a focus on pathology, symptom management, and medication. The focusing method, which was created during the humanist movement of psychology, offers a step-by-step guide to accessing the innate resiliency that lies within an individual’s somatic experience. This paper explores the focusing method as an intervention for recovery-oriented treatment with a group of ten adults (N = 10) living with mental illness at a day program. An intermodal design was applied to establish scaffolding …

The Progression Of Communications: The Lifeline Between Deployed Military Personnel And Their Families, Cierra Mckinney May 2018

The Progression Of Communications: The Lifeline Between Deployed Military Personnel And Their Families, Cierra Mckinney

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In order to understand how far communication between deployed personnel and their families has progressed we have to examine the history of communication. As technology has advanced communication to those deployed has changed over the course of time. In the last century communication with military family members deployed overseas was regulated to letters, phone calls, telegrams, audio and videotapes and possibly the Military Auxiliary Radio System or MARS line when available. However, today communication has vastly improved allowing people to communicate in real-time or near real-time by utilizing communication tools such as: email, Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts and Facebook. These types …

Current Status Of Professional Networks Addressing Sex Education In The United States: An Initial Exploratory Thematic Analysis, Aliya Subhit

Master's Theses

Sex education in the United States has been a highly debated topic. The history of sex education depicts the changing narratives of both the public and the government’s ideals on the topic. Due to the discrepancy between the publics attitudes and perceptions versus the governments ideals, this thesis is the first of its kind to conduct an initial thematic analysis of available bodies of knowledge across the five core mental health disciplines (i.e., marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, clinical psychology, clinical social work, and psychiatric nursing) to determine how the current state of sex education programs in the U.S. is …

Mental Health Counselors And Vicarious Trauma, Nicole Sobkowiak May 2018

Mental Health Counselors And Vicarious Trauma, Nicole Sobkowiak

Counselor Education Capstones

Although there are a handful of evidence-based treatment interventions for clients seeking treatment for trauma related concerns, limited evidence-based treatment interventions exist for the professionals treating survivors of trauma that are experiencing symptoms of vicarious trauma. Mental health counselors are potentially at-risk for developing vicarious trauma or secondary traumatic stress while working with clients seeking treatment for traumatic experiences. Signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma include emotional and physical symptoms similar to those of posttraumatic stress disorder. Risk factors include childhood or personal trauma, work-place organization, lack of supportive clinical supervision, and lack of self-care. Screening tools utilized to measure …

Promoting Empowerment And Innovation: A Technology Initiative, Theresa Marcotte

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Improving empowerment through a supportive organizational culture can lead to innovation in practice and promote positive outcomes. Supporting employee empowerment, through a supportive organizational culture and environment, provides opportunities to innovate and creatively meet desired outcomes. Using these concepts, an Associate Degree Nursing Program empowered faculty to address a strategic planning opportunity to improve practice. The innovation, a Technology Initiative, provides opportunities for evidence-based testing practices, leading to improved, first-time pass rates on the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX). Technology use in the classroom can improve dissemination of nursing knowledge and retention strategies and therefore improve program retention. The utilization …
