Tegelen: Supporting Individual And Group Reflection Through A Dynamic, Structured And Tangible Tool, Yasemin Arslan, Ine Mols, Caroline Hummels

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The municipality of Eindhoven is exploring her new role in a transforming society, just as other local governments. This role requires (behavior) changes on personal, organizational and societal levels. In this paper we shed light on how reflection for civil servants can be stimulated and supported through design. We present our qualitative empirical study carried out in the municipality of Eindhoven, which resulted into the reflection tool called Tegelen. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to support reflection for both personal as organizational usage, within individual and group sessions. Evaluating the concept in context showed that reflection benefits from the …

Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao Jun 2018

Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao

DRS Biennial Conference Series

We all have to consider the importance of mental health, which just as with physical health can cause us to feel ill, unwell and ostracized from our community. However, the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental problems appears to form an impassive and invisible barrier between the people with mental health challenges and the public who is less willing to interact with them. As three researchers respectively from service design, visual communication and art education, we undertook collaborative interdisciplinary design as a strategy, in order to explore a participatory approach to engage with our participants, namely, an …

A Co-Experience Toolkit: Investigating The Issues Of The Pavement Environment And The Relationship With Elderly Pedestrians, Lulu Yin, Eujin Pei

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Pedestrian pavements play an important role in assisting or restricting the quality of walking. Poorly designed and maintained pavements may pose a challenge to the walking experience of older adults. This research aims to investigate pavement problems and their effects on elderly pedestrians. An empirical study was conducted in London with 41 older people aged over 60 who were fit to walk. In this study, we classified 16 influencing factors of the pavements and four adverse effects of them and identified 13 behaviours that elderly pedestrians displayed when they encountered the pavement factors. In addition, 17 recommendations were proposed in …

Design In Healthcare: Challenges And Opportunities, Erez Nusem Jun 2018

Design In Healthcare: Challenges And Opportunities, Erez Nusem

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Healthcare systems are becoming increasingly conscious of the quality of care delivered, along with the provision of value-driven services. Nevertheless, the majority of innovation in the realm of healthcare has been focused on products and services. Beyond being the major contributor to healthcare expenditure, these technology-driven innovations treat medical staff as the primary stakeholder and do little in the way of improving the quality of care for patients. This presents an opportunity to explore other forms of innovation in the context of healthcare. As a human-centred approach, design offers a method for holistically exploring problems, meeting stakeholder needs, and has …

Soma-Wearable Design: Integrating Somaesthetic Practice And Fashion Design For Somatic Wellbeing, Heekyoung Jung, Anna Ståhl Jun 2018

Soma-Wearable Design: Integrating Somaesthetic Practice And Fashion Design For Somatic Wellbeing, Heekyoung Jung, Anna Ståhl

DRS Biennial Conference Series

With advanced technologies and raised expectations for the quality of life, research and design attempts are increasing to promote wellbeing. While data-based reflective practice and behaviour change have been a main strategy in supporting technology- mediated wellbeing, we bring the perspectives of somaesthetic practice and fashion design to complement this research scene. Assuming that body consciousness could positively influence self-perception, presentation and performance through clothing, we propose soma-wearable design as an alternative approach to explore qualities that elaborate and promote somatic wellbeing. First, we conceptualize constructive links between design for reflection, somaesthetic practice, and style-fashion-dress; and re- interpret the core …

This work in progress paper describes the initial stages of a project which aims to characterize the mechanisms of hidden curriculum (HC) in engineering and identify methods for exploring this phenomenon. To effectively study the complex nature of HC, this work brings together researchers with a range of expertise (sociology, engineering education, engineering, statistics, policy analysis, curriculum and instruction) to develop a holistic approach to explore HC in engineering. This work describes the process of gathering input from this multidisciplinary team as well as the literature to develop a mixed-method instrument and model to explore the mechanisms behind HC in …

Participatory Action Research And Student Perspectives In A Rural Postsecondary Education Program, Kristen Love, Martha Mock Jun 2018

Participatory Action Research And Student Perspectives In A Rural Postsecondary Education Program, Kristen Love, Martha Mock

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

Students with intellectual disabilities have a unique pathway into college, and for many rural areas, this is a relatively new pathway. The reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-315) prioritizes inclusive postsecondary education opportunities with an emphasis on students accessing academic, social, and meaningful employment experiences. However, in this legislation, inclusion is vaguely defined and left to postsecondary education institutions to structure within their program model. This article provides perspectives from students with intellectual disabilities from a postsecondary education program situated on a college campus in a rural town. Through participatory action research, students shared their …

Methods: In blood samples from 56 U.S. gamers, we examined expression of the conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA), a leukocyte gene expression profile activated by chronic stress. We compared positively engaged and problem gamers, as identified by an ethnographically developed measure, the Positive and Negative Gaming Experiences Scale (PNGE-42), and also by a clinically derived IGD scale (IGDS-SF9).

Results: CTRA profiles showed a clear relationship with PNGE-42, with a …

Msw Interns At Public Libraries: Fostering Collaboration For Change, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians continues to grow, literature about the utilization of student social workers partnering with libraries is non-existent. Currently 40,000 students are enrolled in M.S.W. programs through the United States and nearly all are required to complete approximately 900 hours "in the field." Such students provide untapped skills, knowledge, and values that can help take diversity in public libraries to the next level.
