Building Successful P-3 Initiatives: Foundations And Catalysts For Systems Change, Lindsey Brianna Patterson, Beth L. Green, Callie H. Lambarth, Mackenzie Burton, Diane Reid
Early Childhood
Across the United States, there is a growing recognition that early education and K-12 systems require transformative changes to address racial, ethnic, linguistic and economic disparities in school readiness and success.
Prenatal-through-Grade-3 (P-3) initiatives address these disparities by coordinating, strengthening and aligning fragmented support systems for families and children from birth through third grade.
These increasingly popular initiatives:
- Are based on accumulating evidence that standalone early childhood and school-based programs are not sufficient to sustain long-term success for children facing early childhood inequities
- Take a collective impact approach that brings families, early childhood providers, K-12 staff and other partners together …

What’S Happening During Home Visits? Exploring The Relationship Of Home Visiting Content And Dosage To Parenting Outcomes, Peggy Nygren, Beth Green, Katie Winters, Anna Rockhill
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research has documented modest positive impacts of early childhood home visiting programs. However, understanding more about what home visitors do during visits and how much time they spend on specific topics may provide insight into the variability in effectiveness of services. Methods Outcome data were collected via parent survey at program enrollment and 12 months from 123 women in three MIECHV-funded home visiting models. Home visitors completed weekly home visit content and activity logs. Results Families received an average of 28 visits during the study (3.1 visits per month). Of ten content areas, the three most often discussed were early …
Texas Foster Care Service Providers’ Awareness And Perceptions Of Human Trafficking And Related Risk Factors Among Child Welfare Involved Youth, Kennedy Morrison
Texas Foster Care Service Providers’ Awareness And Perceptions Of Human Trafficking And Related Risk Factors Among Child Welfare Involved Youth, Kennedy Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study is to explore foster care service providers’ levels of awareness of human trafficking, exploitation, and related risk factors as experienced by foster youth, and to explore what factors influence those levels of awareness. The study entailed distributing a digital survey to foster care service providers in a snowballing method and encouraging them to send the survey to others. The survey found a statistically significant relationship between awareness/identification of risk factors and identification of exploitation, and the respondent’s previous human trafficking training. This supports the literature which indicates trafficking specific training is necessary to identify trafficking …
A Study Of The Effect On Organizational Factors On Job Satisfaction Of Geriatric Practitioners Between Millennials And Older Generations, Peter (Minsuk) Jang
A Study Of The Effect On Organizational Factors On Job Satisfaction Of Geriatric Practitioners Between Millennials And Older Generations, Peter (Minsuk) Jang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to recognize and improve the understanding of social workers’ job satisfaction in the geriatric area. Low job satisfaction makes social workers want to move their field and change their career. The research is the conceptual model of the moderating effect of patient engagement. The hypothesis is that the organizational factors of this model (climate, workplace, pay, supervision) lead to low job satisfaction for social workers and the generation gap between Millennials and older generations will result in different job satisfaction. The assumption was that among the factors (climate, workplace, pay, supervision), salary has the …

Changing Neighborhoods And Residents’ Health Perceptions: The Heart Healthy Hoods Qualitative Study, Paloma Conde, Marta Gutiérrez, Maria Sandin, Julia Díez, Luisa N. Borrell, Jesús Rivera-Navarro, Manuel Franco
Publications and Research
Cities, and therefore neighborhoods, are under constant change. Neighborhood changes may affect residents’ health in multiple ways. The Heart Healthy Hoods (HHH) project studies the association between neighborhood and residents’ health. Focusing on a middle–low-socioeconomic neighborhood in Madrid (Spain), our aim was to describe qualitatively its residents’ perceptions on the urban changes and their impacts on health. We designed a qualitative study using 16 semi-structured interviews including adult residents and professionals living or working in the area. Firstly, we described the perceived main social and neighborhood changes. Secondly, we studied how these neighborhood changes connected to residents’ health perceptions. Perceived …
Management Performance And Its Impact Analysis On The Beneficiary Community, Sri Kridasakti
Management Performance And Its Impact Analysis On The Beneficiary Community, Sri Kridasakti
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
For most community-engagement in the universities, the beneficiary self-help impact have been disregarded. In fact, the ‘Self-help’ creation in the beneficiary community is the CO-CD prindiple, and this principle has been hardly adopted by the universities. This research goal was a profile of UT community-engagement managerial performance in 2012. The critical issues of this research were to respond Whether the UT community-engagement management had been executed properly? and Whether UT community-engagement had been capable of giving positive impacts on the beneficiary communities? This research-design covered 2 clusters, the first was to do with the managerial performance issues; the second encompassed …

Training Program To Support Preparedness Of Elderly Health Care Services, Vita Priantina Dewi, Raden Irawati Ismail, Mf Lindhawati Kusdhany
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
The number of elderly people in Indonesia is estimated to reach 29 million in 2020. The ageing process is usually followed by poor health which has been associated with risk of severe cognitive impairment. However, there is a limited training on older people’s health and cognitive impairment. Thus, programmes emphasise on trainings for health cadres, health workers and physicians are encouraged to improve older persons’ health. Additionally, health conditions of older persons have a relationship with cognitive impairment. There was 39% (thirty nine percent) of the elderly who experienced cognitive impairment in several cities and villages in Indonesia. Therefore, this …

Learner Power! The Benefits Of Metacognition And Transparency On Education Justice, Insights From Neuroscience Of Learning, Camille O. Nava
University Honors Theses
Emerging understandings from neuroscience and cognitive research on human learning indicate that nearly all people can learn, and that we can do so throughout our lifetimes. Simultaneously, public health research from the late 1990s identified Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This research connected ACEs to incidence of factors impacting children’s development (including cognitive and educational) and possible long-term impairments to life outcomes. Incidence of impact factors is correlated with effects of poverty and socioeconomic status, especially as the experiences of poverty can create neural stress impacts similar as those resulting from ACEs. Specific insights from ACEs-related research identifies developmental impacts to …

Parenting Advice And Regrets Of Empty-Nesters, Ashton Chapman, David G. Schramm
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
Objective: To identify the advice and regrets empty-nest parents have when reflecting on their experiences as parents, and to investigate the utility of the parenting pyramid framework for parent education on the basis of that advice and those regrets.
Background: The parenting pyramid specifies that the parent–child relationship, teaching, and corection are key components of parenting, and that they should be emphasized in that order or priority. However, the extent to which this model is reflective of what parents actually think or do, or wish they would have done, remains unclear.
Method: Empty-nesters were recruited through social media, professional e-mail …
Welfare Regime Transformation In Indonesia: A Citizenship Debate, Tauchid Komara Yuda
Welfare Regime Transformation In Indonesia: A Citizenship Debate, Tauchid Komara Yuda
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This article discusses the outlook for the Indonesian welfare regime using citizenship as a framework. I argue that the transformation of the Indonesian welfare regime from productivist characteristics to universalism has been disrupted by the discourse of communitarian and market citizenship that have become dependent on the welfare configuration path in contemporary Indonesia. This circumstance has become an endogenous factor that obstructs innovation and change within an administrative body of universal social protection. Using evidence from Indonesian experiences, this article can help develop a further understanding of the complexity of relationships between welfare provision and citizenship in the context of …

This study examined how cultural adaptation and delivery quality of the school-based intervention keepin’ it REAL (kiR) influenced adolescent substance use. The goal of the study was to compare the effectiveness of the multi-cultural, urban (non-adapted) kiR intervention, a re-grounded (adapted) rural version of the kiR intervention and control condition in a new, rural setting. A total of 39 middle schools in rural communities of two states in the USA were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (i.e., control, non-adapted urban kiR, and adapted rural kiR). Data included adolescent self-reported lifetime substance use and observers’ ratings of delivery quality …

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Existence Of Measurement Dependence In The Results Of A Meta-Analysis, William R. Nugent, Sukyung Yoon, Jayme E. Walters
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Objective: Findings from meta-analytic studies that use standardized mean differences (SMDs) may be overly dependent on the original measures that were used to generate SMDs. This may be particularly true when measures have arbitrary metrics or when measures fail to meet measurement equivalence. We test the hypothesis that in such cases, meta-analytic results may vary significantly— statistically and practically—as a function of the measures used to derive SMDs. Methods: We conducted 5 secondary random-effects meta-analyses of SMDs—each under a different measurement scenario—from a published meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of cognitive–behavioral therapy with that of reminiscence therapy for depression in older …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Depression is one of the leading causes of the global disease burden, affecting millions of people worldwide. The availability of mental health treatment, however, remains very limited in many low-middle income countries, including Indonesia. Internet-based interventions are known to have the potential to deliver mental health treatment economically and appropriately according to numerous studies conducted in high-income countries. In the current study, we describe a systematic cultural adaptation of an internet-based behavioral activation intervention for depression in Indonesia, named Guided Act and Feel Indonesia. During the adaptation, relevant stakeholders were involved, including licensed clinical psychologists, mental health communities, lay counselors, …

The Association Between Perceived Discrimination And Suicide Among Homosexuals: The Role Of Self-Esteem As Mediator, Soon Aun Tan, Wei Man Tay, Magdelene Ee Yin Neoh, Hui Wen Wong
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Because of Malaysia’s conservative society, its homosexual citizens are often marginalized and discriminated. Past studies have shown a significant difference in psychological well-being between homosexuals and their heterosexual counterparts, which is attributed to differences in social treatment. Existing studies have discussed the underlying process of the relation between perceived discrimination and suicidal ideation among homosexuals globally. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relation between perceived discrimination and suicidal thoughts among homosexuals in Malaysia through the mediating effect of self-esteem. Research subjects were composed of400 self-identified homosexuals who participated in an online survey. TheSuicidal Ideation Attributes Scale, Modified Acculturative Stress …

More Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Research
There is considerable literature on internationalising the curriculum in higher education, but relatively little of this focuses on developing international perspectives in home-based students. In particular, there has been limited direct engagement with student views and understandings, especially comparatively across a wide range of subjects. To address this gap, we surveyed 495 first-year students in nine subjects across four faculties at a UK university, asking about their views on internationalisation. We also examined an apparent bias in the literature towards Business subject case studies. We found some support for generic approaches to teaching internationalisation for home students, but a more …

Developing The Evidence Base For Mental Health Policy And Services: Inquiries Into Epidemiology, Cost-Benefits, And Utilization, Joseph L. Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The overarching aim of this dissertation is to use health services research methods to address three problems in behavioral health services. This dissertation seeks to address the knowledge gaps in behavioral health services through the generation of evidence intended to support evidence-based practices (EBP).
Previous work has examined epidemiology of behavioral health disorders in the ED, but they have not attempted to examine disorders by the cause of injury. Chapter 2 examines the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders among adults who seek care in the emergency department (ED) by cause of injury. Data from a national hospital discharge survey was analyzed …

Patient Experience Journal
Family-centered care (FCC) is defined as an approach to care coordination founded in collaborative partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and their family caregivers. Amid the enthusiasm for FCC in the pediatric setting, opportunities have been identified to operationalize the engagement of pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients and their caregivers into decision making that translates not only to their healthcare, but also to the context in which care is provided, as well as the research informing their care. At a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, the Children’s Cancer Hospital was instrumental in designing and implementing patient and family engagement …

This paper will discuss about the problem surrounding human trafficking eradication in Indonesia. In general, the effort to eradicate human trafficking in Indonesia has been focusing too much on enforcing criminal law and restricting immigration instead of protecting and preventing the victim of trafficking. In order to explain why it happened, this paper will use Amitav Acharya’s theory on norm localization which provides a framework to assume that the norm of human trafficking eradication in Indonesia has been appropriated by certain contradicting value. By using the theory, this paper finds that the norm of human trafficking eradication promoted by Palermo …
