Themes Which Shaped My Professional Journey, Jusuf Salih Jan 2018

Themes Which Shaped My Professional Journey, Jusuf Salih

Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

By the emergence of the new conditions of fast communication among diverse communities today, we are witnessing many changes in social, political, economic, and other aspects of modern societies. With mass communication and social media, the barriers among nations are falling, thus giving opportunities for openness and better understanding — but also to misleading and deceptive information. Therefore, these changes demand redefinition and reevaluation of the newly emerged conditions and accordingly adjustments to the new circumstances. Issues related to religion, ethnicity, and nationality are particularly complex and sensitive matters that can bridge but also divide people; therefore, they require thorough …

Asme R/C Baja Car, Torrie Large Jan 2018

Asme R/C Baja Car, Torrie Large

All Undergraduate Projects

How does one build a car? Do they start with the tires and build inward or do they develop separate aspects at the same time? This remote-controlled car was designed and built with the intention of competing in the annual Baja Competition. There are three competitions: sprinting, slalom, and an obstacle course. The suspension system of this car must be designed to support the car for both the physical build and the competitiveness. It must do this without interfering with the drive train and steering mechanism designed by Doug Erickson. The suspension system employs suspension arms attached to the chassis …

The Sorrowful Muslim's Guide, Hussein Ahmad Amin, Yasmin Amin, Nesrin Amin Jan 2018

The Sorrowful Muslim's Guide, Hussein Ahmad Amin, Yasmin Amin, Nesrin Amin

In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers

Explores the interaction between pre-Islamic tradition and modern supporters of continuity, reform and change in Muslim communities

Published as Dalīl al-Muslim al-ḥazīn ilā muqtada-l-sulūk fī’l-qarn al-ʿishrīn in 1983, this book remains a timely and important read today. Both the resurgence of Islamist politics and the political, social and intellectual upheaval which accompanied the Arab Spring challenge us to re-examine the interaction between the pre-modern Islamic tradition and modern supporters of continuity, reform and change in Muslim communities.

This book does exactly that, raising questions regarding issues about which other Muslim intellectuals and thinkers have been silent. These include – among …

Prosocial Religion And Games: Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber

Articles

In a time when religious legal systems are discussed without an understanding of history or context, it is more important than ever to help widen the understanding and discourse about the prosocial aspects of religious legal systems throughout history. The Lost & Found (www.lostandfoundthegame.com) game series, targeted for an audience of teens through twentysomethings in formal, learning environments, is designed to teach the prosocial aspects of medieval religious systems—specifically collaboration, cooperation, and the balancing of communal and individual/family needs. Set in Fustat (Old Cairo) in the 12th century, the first two games in the series address laws in Moses Maimonides’ …

Parents’ Perspectives On Inclusive Schools For Students With Disabilities In Saudi Arabia, Bader Alsulami Jan 2018

Parents’ Perspectives On Inclusive Schools For Students With Disabilities In Saudi Arabia, Bader Alsulami

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

In recent decades, inclusion has gained increasing international currency. In the Gulf region, Saudi Arabia in particular has made a sustained commitment to leadership in the humane, equitable inclusion of individuals with disabilities in its communities and the provision of appropriate, free public education for students with disabilities. Despite these achievements, students with disabilities remain segregated from general education students in separate classrooms, regardless of degree of disability. This study examined the perspectives of parents of students with and without disabilities in Saudi Arabia on placing their children in general education classrooms that are comprised of children with and without …

Wise Or Foolish: Women In Mormon Biblical Narrative Art, Jennifer Champoux Jan 2018

Wise Or Foolish: Women In Mormon Biblical Narrative Art, Jennifer Champoux

BYU Studies

Visual imagery is an inescapable element of religion. Even those groups that generally avoid figural imagery, such as those in Judaism and Islam, have visual objects with religious significance.1 In fact, as David Morgan, professor of religious studies and art history at Duke University, has argued, it is often the religions that avoid figurative imagery that end up with the richest material culture.2 To some extent, this is true for Mormonism. Although Mormons believe art can beautify a space, visual art is not tied to actual ritual practice. Chapels, for example, where the sacrament ordinance is performed, are built with …
