Internationalizing Islamic Higher Education In Indonesia: A Lesson Learned From Australia, Sibawaihi Sibawaihi, Dwi Ratnasari, Sri Purnami, Melanie Brooks
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Internationalization plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality and global recognition of Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia. This study investigates how these institutions implement internationalization by drawing insights from the experience of Monash University in Australia. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews and document analysis. The findings indicate that while Islamic higher education institutions have implemented key aspects of internationalization, there is still room for improvement. Institutions must continuously enhance educational quality while maintaining their unique identity to attract international students. Greater autonomy in financial and administrative management is necessary to align Islamic …

A Study To Understand The Experiences Of Black American Christian Women In Leadership Positions Who Serve Within The Black Church, Keyona N. Harper
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study contributes to the gap in academic literature through the identification of themes within the participants' experiences of being a Black American female leader within the Black church. This study uses a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative design to understand the experiences of Black American Christian women in leadership positions who serve within the Black church. The findings offer insight into the role of race, gender, religion, and environmental factors in the human experience. Through this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research approach, data were analyzed to find universal themes of commitment to calling, pastor idolization, exclusion, navigating church culture, balancing personal and …
Exploration Of The Congruence Between Environmental Concerns And Eco-Spirituality Programming At Retreat Centers As Experienced By Participants, Jean Golicz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this multiple-embedded case study was to explore the role of environmental awareness and concerns in influencing engagement in retreat practices that were organized around the theme of eco-spirituality and the impact on organizational leadership and program development at two retreat centers in the northeastern region of the United States. Roman Catholic retreat centers were the focus of the study as they endeavored to fulfill leadership directives reflected in the papal encyclical Laudato si’. The centers examined offered immersion in nature, reflection on the interdependence of organic systems, and the development of action plans to address environmental issues. …

Walking The Tightropes: Tensions In High School Religious Education, Nicholas Hurt
Walking The Tightropes: Tensions In High School Religious Education, Nicholas Hurt
Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation examined the challenges faced by high school religion teachers in Catholic education through interviews with 16 teachers from nine U.S. dioceses. The dissertation explored four key tensions the literature indicates have emerged in Catholic education since the Second Vatican Council: (1) balancing catechetical and academic approaches, (2) navigating the dual role of educator and minister, (3) reconciling prescribed curricula with diverse student needs, and (4) addressing training disparities and their impact on teacher morale.
Beyond these tensions, teachers identified additional challenges absent from the literature. First, they noted that nurturing authentic faith is difficult when students fear …

Worship Through Miniature Gesture: The Tell Asmar Hoard As Ritual Role Models, Libby Bush
Worship Through Miniature Gesture: The Tell Asmar Hoard As Ritual Role Models, Libby Bush
Art History Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for a new approach to hand gesture in the Early Dynastic period, and more broadly, the Ancient Near East. I use the Tell Asmar hoard, a group of twelve miniature sculptures that were found buried in a temple in ancient Eshnunna in the Diyala region of Iraq, as a case study. The sculptures are dated to the Early Dynastic (2900-2334 BCE) and belong to the larger corpus of sculptures of Mesopotamia. I argue that the Tell Asmar hoard act as role models and mediators for the temple worshiper. My argument is built upon miniaturization theory, as the …

Sacred Seeds: The Transmission Of Knowledge Seen Through Aztec Religionand Agriculture, Ian S. Hohsfield
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The integration of religion and agriculture was a cornerstone of Aztec civilization, deeply influencing societal practices and knowledge systems. Scholars have long recognized the importance of religious rituals in ensuring agricultural success; however, the specific methods by which agricultural knowledge was transmitted within religious contexts—and how these methods may have contributed to knowledge gaps—remain underexplored. This thesis investigates the relationship between Aztec religious practices and the transmission of agricultural knowledge, focusing on how the methods of knowledge transmission influenced agricultural expertise and led to potential gaps. It does so by analyzing primary sources such as the Florentine Codex and the …
Secularism, Illiberalism, And Latino Voters In The 2024 Presidential Election, Jocelyn D. Lopez
Secularism, Illiberalism, And Latino Voters In The 2024 Presidential Election, Jocelyn D. Lopez
Honors College Theses
This paper examines the intersection of secularism, illiberalism, and the shifting political alignment of Latino voters in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. It challenges assumptions that Latino voters naturally align with liberal democratic ideals, arguing instead that religious commitments, particularly among Christian Latinos, have increasingly aligned some with illiberal political movements. The analysis explores how conservative appeals to religious values resonate with voters who feel alienated by the perceived secularism of the Democratic Party. At the same time, these voters may overlook moral inconsistencies in candidates like Donald Trump if they believe he respects religious communities and challenges liberal norms …

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla
‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla
Journal of Amazigh Studies
My contribution will focus on multilingualism and multimedia in the ‘Amazigh literary and cinematographic space’ (Merolla De l’art, “Amazigh/Berber Literature”). Examining this notion coined in the 1990’s (Merolla “Gender and Community”) allows us to reflect on ongoing debates regarding North African literatures in postcolonial contexts. It also helps to see that Amazigh/Berber literature solely defined as Amazigh-language production tends to isolate works and performances that engage with multiple languages and literary traditions, cultural intersections, and hybridization in North Africa and its diasporas. The discussion is contextualized within the historical development of what is sometimes referred to as the “North …

Body Maps As A Source Of Women’S Embodied Experiences: A Diary Study Into Visualising Personal Health Data, Danique Hofstee, Armağan Karahanoğlu, Karin Dijkstra, Geke Ludden
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper explores the use of body maps as a visual methodology for capturing and representing women's embodied health experiences. Through a diary study involving 25 participants and 325 drawings, we identified two key themes: working with the body map template and telling stories by adding elements to the body map. Our findings highlight the potential of body maps to provide rich, nuanced representations of women's health data that transcend traditional numerical and text-based methods. A better understanding of experiences of health data can ultimately contribute to the development of more inclusive and empathetic health technologies. This research points out …

Unilateralism’S Double-Edged Sword: Understanding The Impact Of The United States’ Unilateral Actions Towards Afghanistan And Iraq, Kayla Amanda Matthews
Master's Theses
This thesis will explore the effects of the United States' unilateral actions throughout the war on terror. Has the United States pursuing unilateral actions in Afghanistan and Iraq equated to an increase in anti-Americanism, leading to increasing terrorist acts that endanger its national security? The answer is yes. Although, from what this research will reveal anti-Americanism begins to be refueled in these countries but not due to any current direct conflict between the above-referenced nation-states and the United States. Previous research reveals that the United States' relationship with unilateralism was not a new phenomenon that arose during the war on …
The Hagiography Of Trinity Sparkle, Emma Marie Schwartz
The Hagiography Of Trinity Sparkle, Emma Marie Schwartz
Theses - ALL
Through painting and soft sculpture, I create a theoretical realm intertwined with my lived reality pushing against norms perpetuated by religious and secular heteronormativity. I mobilize my desire and dualistic experiences to initiate and recognize the uneasy and necessary conversations surrounding the ways we search for and live out our sexualities and identities in relationships and communities. Themes of acceptance stem from my personal life and are applied in the fictional realm through figuration, cropped imagery, and highly saturated colors in my paintings and soft sculptures. I rewrite art historical Biblical imagery and interweave them with my personal experiences, in …

A Raced Theology Of The Human Person: An Expanded Theological Anthropology, Cary W. Dabney
A Raced Theology Of The Human Person: An Expanded Theological Anthropology, Cary W. Dabney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on race as a critical, yet largely unaddressed, topic in Catholic theological anthropology. In Catholic colleges and universities that are recognized as members of the Cardinal Newman Society, theological concerns about race are deemed irrelevant for theological education in the faith and are altogether absent from the theology of the human person. As a result, this collection of institutions treats race as a specialty within pastoral theology, one that is significant to groups, but not a part of the fundamental theology of the human person. This ‘un-raced’ theological anthropology results in the institution’s inability to respond effectively …
God Who Crafts: An Appalachian Theology Of Making And Community, Gwendolen Jackson
God Who Crafts: An Appalachian Theology Of Making And Community, Gwendolen Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Appalachia has been the subject of much speculation and often disparagement since it first became distinct as a part of the United States in approximately the 1860s, but it is more than just its reputation. This dissertation discusses the history and modern myth of Appalachia, and then it considers Appalachia on its own terms through what the people who live there have said about it and about their own lives.
This work focuses on the continued prominence of craft and its place in the spiritual lives of mountain people as it examines interviews that I conducted with mountain crafters. I …
