Advanced Geophysical Classification Of Wwii-Era Unexploded Bombs Using Borehole Electromagnetics, Laurens Beran, Stephen Billings
Advanced Geophysical Classification Of Wwii-Era Unexploded Bombs Using Borehole Electromagnetics, Laurens Beran, Stephen Billings
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The legacy of World War II-era unexploded bombs (UXB) is an ongoing public safety hazard throughout Europe, and especially in Germany. Large, air-dropped bombs that are a legacy of Allied bombing campaigns are discovered on a weekly basis in Germany, requiring evacuations and disposal efforts costing hundreds of thousands of Euros in some instances.
This article presents recent work done by Black Tusk Geophysics using advanced geophysical classification (AGC) to reliably identify hazardous ordnance at urban sites in Germany. After briefly describing electromagnetic (EM) sensors and data processing required for AGC, this article will discuss survey and design considerations for …

Quantitative Attribution Of Climate Effects On Hurricane Harvey’S Extreme Rainfall In Texas, S-Y Simon Wang, Lin Zhao, Jin-Ho Yoon, Phil Klotzbach, Robert R. Gillies
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017 as the first land-falling category 4 hurricane to hit the state of Texas since Hurricane Carla in September 1961. While its intensity at landfall was notable, most of the vast devastation in the Houston metropolitan area was due to Harvey stalling near the southeast Texas coast over the next several days. Harvey's long-duration rainfall event was reminiscent of extreme flooding that occurred in the neighboring state of Louisiana: both of which were caused by a stalled tropical low-pressure system producing four days of intense precipitation. A quantitative attribution analysis of Harvey's rainfall was …

Why Riders Perform Risky Riding Behavior In Jakarta: The Effects Of Hazardous Situations And Gender On Risk Perception, Dewi Maulina, Keyni Regina Danilasari, Fara Nazhira, Satara Samia Jufri
Psychological Research on Urban Society
The relationship between risky riding behavior and traffic accidents has been identified in previous research. However, there is limited research that focuses on the interaction between internal and external factors and the effect this has on riders’ risky riding decisions. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of hazardous situations and gender on risk perception and risky riding behavior among motorcyclists. We focus on lane-splitting behavior as one of the most common risky riding behaviors among motorcyclists in Jakarta. A 2×2 mixed-groups factorial ANOVA (hazardous situation × gender) was conducted with 72 participant riders, male as well …

Set Adrift: A Study Of Characteristics, Sustainability, And The Lifelines Tethering Connecticut Forensic Social Workers In The Criminal And Juvenile Justice Systems, Jennie Jerome Albert
Doctoral Dissertations
Despite its roots as a leader in juvenile justice, prison advocacy and reform, appreciation and professional support for forensic social work (FSW) has waxed and waned over the last one hundred and twenty years. It has gone from leadership in the field of criminal justice to becoming nearly invisible to the profession of social work itself. Over the last decade, FSW began experiencing a resurgence thanks to a shift in policy and practice toward treatment and diversion for justice-involved individuals. Despite FSW’s historical roots and relevance to today’s justice systems, there is a dearth of materials about who is practicing …
Between Public And Communal Interests: A Legality Issue Forced Evictions Occuring In Jakarta, Erna Dyah Kusumawati
Between Public And Communal Interests: A Legality Issue Forced Evictions Occuring In Jakarta, Erna Dyah Kusumawati
Indonesia Law Review
Forced evictions are considered as a “global epidemic” since they occur in several countries regardless of the states’ development level. The private ownership issues and the development issues are examples of rationales behind forced evictions. Under the human rights regime, states are obliged to refrain from any eviction, moreover, the states are required to adopt measures preventing forced evictions from happening or provide the victims with legal mechanisms to challenge the policies if evictions occur. International law prohibits forced evictions and offers a guideline for forced eviction triggered by development. This paper will investigate the legality of forced evictions happening …

Deliberating Public Policy Issues With Adolescents: Classroom Dynamics And Sociocultural Considerations, Margaret S. Crocco, Avner Segall, Anne-Lise S. Halvorsen, Rebecca J. Jacobsen
Democracy & Education
Classroom discussion and deliberation have been widely touted in the research literature as a centerpiece of high quality civic education. Empirical studies, however, of such processes are relatively few. In a public policy deliberation on immigration conducted in three Midwestern high schools during the academic year 2015–16, the authors found that analysis of a set of deliberations on the subject of immigration policy in the United States reveals the ways in which sociocultural identity aspects of the settings and participants influenced the processes and dynamics of these classroom events. Reflecting upon this analysis suggests a set of factors that reveal …

The Fiery Furnace, Civil Disobedience, And The Civil Rights Movement: A Biblical Exegesis On Daniel 3 And Letter From Birmingham Jail, Jonathan C. Augustine
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This essay was written in observance of the 50th anniversary of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s untimely assassination in April 1968. It highlights some of King’ s most important work during the American Civil Rights Movement in terms of its contemporary influence. As a focal thesis, this essay argues that King’ s famed Letter From Birmingham Jail—written during his April 1963 incarceration in Birmingham, Alabama, for deliberately refusing to follow what he morally deemed to be an “unjust law”—was predicated on the biblical foundation of civil disobedience exemplified in the famed story of Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego, the …
Stabilizer Channels For Trenches, John Korman, D. Clay Cox, David Walsh
Stabilizer Channels For Trenches, John Korman, D. Clay Cox, David Walsh
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes a trench profile that includes horizontal stabilizer channels along the sides of the trench. The trench profile enables greater robustness of a trench seal to environmental conditions during a sealant application process. When a sealant is applied, the horizontal stabilizer channels in the sidewalls of the trench create a locking key that prevents the solidified sealant from rising above grade under conditions when the sealant is incompletely secured to the sidewall. The horizontal stabilizer channels prevent solidified sealant from sinking below grade as a result of compression of filler material or the filler rod in the trench. …
Hiding Behind The Closet Door: Representations Of The Homosexual Experience In A Streetcar Named Desire, Antonia Piccirillo
Hiding Behind The Closet Door: Representations Of The Homosexual Experience In A Streetcar Named Desire, Antonia Piccirillo
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Themes related to homosexuality and the homosexual experience are interwoven in many layers throughout Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. This research paper analyzes contemporary commentary on homosexuality from the 1940s and ‘50s, Blanche’s experiences with light and perception, and moments of homosociality between the male poker players, to interpret how the homosexual experience is represented and exposed on stage through the two main characters in the play, Blanche and Stanley. Williams uses a heteronormative context to portray the homosexual experience, thus mirroring the way gay men had to navigate life in the closet while presenting to the public …
Remedies Symposium: Upstairs Downstairs: Morales-Santana And The Right To A Remedy In Comparative Law, Jerfi Uzman
Remedies Symposium: Upstairs Downstairs: Morales-Santana And The Right To A Remedy In Comparative Law, Jerfi Uzman
ConLawNOW
The Supreme Court’s ruling in Sessions v. Morales-Santana has refueled a classic debate about constitutional remedies in equal protection cases. The ways in which courts should respond to underinclusive legislation is a question that is fundamental to the idea of constitutional rights. Not just in the United States but throughout the Western world, courts struggle with the dilemma raised in Morales-Santana. In this article, I seek to broaden the debate by putting Morales-Santana in a comparative perspective. Drawing from the case law of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Supreme Court of …

Impact Of 2001 - 2016 Supreme Court Establishment Clause Cases, Nicole Cumming
Honors Theses
This study will look at United States Supreme Court Establishment Clause cases from 2001-2016. During those 16 years, the Court decided 1,276 cases. Only 10 of those cases dealt with the establishment clause.
At an absolute minimum, the Establishment Clause was intended to prohibit the federal government from declaring and financially supporting a national religion, which existed in many other countries at the time of America's founding. This idea has become vital to the values Americans hold dear. Throughout history, religious freedom and tolerance have been celebrated, and most of that is due to the Establishment Clause. However, there is …

Risk Analysis Of Autonomous Vehicle And Its Safety Impact On Mixed Traffic Stream, Plaban Das
Risk Analysis Of Autonomous Vehicle And Its Safety Impact On Mixed Traffic Stream, Plaban Das
Theses and Dissertations
In 2016, more than 35,000 people died in traffic crashes, and human error was the reason for 94% of these deaths. Researchers and automobile companies are testing autonomous vehicles in mixed traffic streams to eliminate human error by removing the human driver behind the steering wheel. However, recent autonomous vehicle crashes while testing indicate the necessity for a more thorough risk analysis. The objectives of this study were (1) to perform a risk analysis of autonomous vehicles and (2) to evaluate the safety impact of these vehicles in a mixed traffic stream. The overall research was divided into two phases: …
Capitalizing On Criminal Justice, Eisha Jain
Capitalizing On Criminal Justice, Eisha Jain
Duke Law Journal
The U.S. criminal justice system “piles on.” It punishes too many for too long. Much criminal law scholarship focuses on the problem of excessive punishment. Yet for the low-level offenses that dominate state court workloads, much of the harm caused by arrests and convictions arises outside the formal criminal sentence. It stems from spiraling hidden penalties and the impact of a criminal record. The key question is not just why the state over-punishes, but rather why so many different institutions—law enforcement institutions as well as civil regulatory agencies and private actors—find it valuable to do so. This Article argues that …

From Theory To Doctrine: An Empirical Analysis Of The Right To Keep And Bear Arms After Heller, Eric Ruben, Joseph Blocher
From Theory To Doctrine: An Empirical Analysis Of The Right To Keep And Bear Arms After Heller, Eric Ruben, Joseph Blocher
Duke Law Journal
As a matter of constitutional doctrine, the right to keep and bear arms is coming of age. But although the doctrine has begun to mature in the decade since District of Columbia v. Heller , scholars, advocates, and judges disagree about (and sometimes simply do not know) how to characterize it.
This Article is the first comprehensive empirical analysis of post- Heller Second Amendment doctrine. Beginning with a set of more than one thousand Second Amendment challenges, we have coded every available Second Amendment opinion—state and federal, trial and appellate—from Heller up until February 1, 2016. The dataset is deep …

The Impact Of Past Experience With Tornadoes On Future Decisions, Emily Paltz, Michael Hayes
The Impact Of Past Experience With Tornadoes On Future Decisions, Emily Paltz, Michael Hayes
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Tornadoes are a dangerous threat to public safety. The National Weather Service (NWS), therefore, advises the public to go to an interior room on the lowest level of their houses when a tornado warning is issued for their area. As the NWS Central Region Service Assessment of the Joplin, Missouri Tornado published in July 2011 reveals, however, this is often not the first action taken after learning that there is danger of being hit by a tornado. Rather, people need to seek confirmation from more than one source before following the recommended action. The goal of this research project is …
Homicide And The Effect Of Racial And Ethnic Heterogeneity: Determining Individual Homicide Counts Within The Aggregate Population, Kayla Rachel Toohy
Homicide And The Effect Of Racial And Ethnic Heterogeneity: Determining Individual Homicide Counts Within The Aggregate Population, Kayla Rachel Toohy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Recent literature suggests that the effect of racial and ethnic heterogeneity on homicide varies by aggregation. The current study intends to fill an important gap in the existent literature. The purpose of this research is to achieve a better understanding of how racial and ethnic heterogeneity impacts homicide by examining data at two different levels of aggregation in three different cities (Chicago, Memphis, and Baltimore). Racial and ethnic heterogeneity’s relationship to homicide is examined at both the census tract and block group levels using data from the Chicago Data Portal, Memphis Police Department, and Baltimore Data Portal. Findings show that …

Kratom Crackdown: How The Dea Abused Its Emergency Scheduling Authority Under The Controlled Substances Act, Olivia Castillo
Kratom Crackdown: How The Dea Abused Its Emergency Scheduling Authority Under The Controlled Substances Act, Olivia Castillo
University of Miami Law Review
The Drug Enforcement Administration wields tremendous power at scheduling a new drug or substance on an emergency basis under the Controlled Substances Act. The DEA newly leveled this power at a plant—kratom—with the potential to curb the menacing opioid epidemic in North America. This unprecedented effort has generated considerable controversy. Many individuals remonstrated the agency’s action, especially those facing life-threatening hardships because of the opioid crisis. Members of Congress also took a stand against the DEA’s unrivalled move to schedule kratom, suggesting that the agency had abused the emergency scheduling authority delegated by the legislative branch.
This Comment explores the …
