The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr. May 2018

The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr.

Student Theses 2015-Present

From the early 1960s through the mid-1990s, crime in New York City ran rampant. With a gradually dwindling police during this time, a high unemployment rate, and an rapidly increasing metropolitan population, crime peaked in the early 1990s, with the murder rate hitting a record-high of 2,245 in 1990. When Mayor Rudy Giuliani took office in 1994 and appoint Bill Bratton as the NYPD police commissioner, these rates immediately plunged. Numerous factors may have contributed to this sudden decline in crime: the police force grew significantly through the 1990s, more criminals were placed and held in prison, and the economic …

The Effects Of Technical Language And Individual Differences On Evaluating Interventions For Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jillian R. Reiher May 2018

The Effects Of Technical Language And Individual Differences On Evaluating Interventions For Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jillian R. Reiher

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has identified many interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Some of these interventions are evidence-based; others are not. However, previous research has also found that people select interventions for their children with ASD based on several factors other than the evidence base. Other research has found that the language used when describing interventions also influences people’s perceptions of them. The current study examined several factors that may influence how people evaluate two widely used ASD interventions: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Sensory Integration (SI). ABA is an evidence-based intervention, but SI does not have any empirical support. The …

Faculty Scholarship

In upholding the constitutionality of the officers’ prolonged detention of Mr. Vargas, the lower court inaccurately assumed that Mr. Vargas was labeled a “transit recidivist” by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) as a result of either an open warrant or a prior conviction.3 The amici submit this brief to correct this misconception.4 The NYPD actually labels New York subway riders “transit recidivist” based on a much broader, constitutionally compromised database that includes prior arrests and summons that have been dismissed, declined prosecution or otherwise terminated in favor of the accused.

The Effects Of Media Exposure On Perceptions Of Residence Restrictions, Stephanie Simeone May 2018

The Effects Of Media Exposure On Perceptions Of Residence Restrictions, Stephanie Simeone

Student Theses

Public perceptions impact the formation of sex offender policy, yet much of what the public knows about sex crimes is based in stereotypical narratives provided by the media. The present study investigated the effects of media exposure on perceptions of sexual offending and the efficacy of residence restrictions. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three media exposure groups and then asked about their opinions about sexual offending and residence restrictions. Results indicated that participants who viewed sensationalized media reports were more likely than individuals who viewed informed media and no media to endorse more stereotypical views of individuals convicted …

Urban Scaling And The Impact Of Socioeconomic Performance On Health And Environmental Outcomes, Sky Tallman May 2018

Urban Scaling And The Impact Of Socioeconomic Performance On Health And Environmental Outcomes, Sky Tallman

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis explores the question of whether correlations between socioeconomic indicators and health and environmental indicators can be observed at the metropolitan level of analysis. Indicators are considered both in terms of per capita values and scale-adjusted values. Scale-adjusted values are a concept based on research on urban scaling which account for the agglomeration effect of population on socioeconomic output and describe a city’s performance in terms of how it compares with expected performance on an indicator for its population size based on the power law scaling of that indicator to population. These indicators provide an alternative baseline for comparing …

A Field Gis Solution To Derelict Sites And Dangerous Structures Management, Laurence Lee, Niamh O' Reilly May 2018

A Field Gis Solution To Derelict Sites And Dangerous Structures Management, Laurence Lee, Niamh O' Reilly

Conference papers

The subjective nature of the definitions and lack of guidance under the Derelict Sites Act 1990 and the Local Government Sanitary Services Act 1964 (Ireland) have led to inconsistent applications of the Acts and a reluctance to enforce. Dereliction has been a blight on the scenic beauty and attractiveness of town and countryside in Ireland, taking away from their appeal to inhabitants, investors and tourists. The Derelict Sites Act 1990 was introduced to empower local authorities in the remediation of problem sites. Part 8 of the Act requires that Local Authorities keep a register of derelict sites. The register is …

Online News Coverage About Fraud And Self-Defensive Behavior In China, Congxi Wang May 2018

Online News Coverage About Fraud And Self-Defensive Behavior In China, Congxi Wang

Theses

This study explores the role of online news media in directing people’s behavior in China. Previous literature shows that Chinese tend to be suspicious or hostile towards strangers and those outside their network. This study assumes that this self-defensive behavior was caused by negative portrayal of strangers in Chinese online news media. A survey and a qualitative content analysis were conducted to understand how the exposure to crime news affects people’s perception of strangers and public safety in China, then causes self-defensive behavior in China. The finding shows consistency between survey responses and media coverages about strangers, which establishes the …

How The Proximity Of Crime Impacts Housing Prices: A Hedonic Pricing Study Of Inner-Loop Houston, Tx., Samuel D. Thompson May 2018

How The Proximity Of Crime Impacts Housing Prices: A Hedonic Pricing Study Of Inner-Loop Houston, Tx., Samuel D. Thompson

Geography ETDs

This research used data on over 2200 house sales in inner-city Houston, TX to estimate the impact of crime on house prices. A GIS was used to tabulate home sale data from the MLS, neighborhood characteristics and crime data published by the Houston Police Department. Hedonic Pricing Models were built to assess how crime effects housing price and if proximity to the criminal event matters. Results show that crime does have a measurable impact on home sale price and that proximity of crime is important. An increase in number of violent criminal events leads to a discount in home price. …

Nursing Students Perceptions Of Their Role In The Learning Process, Tracy Linn Booth May 2018

Nursing Students Perceptions Of Their Role In The Learning Process, Tracy Linn Booth

Dissertations

Nurse educators have identified oversaturated curriculum as a factor influencing adequate preparation of nursing students for beginning practice. The dynamic nature of healthcare contributed to content laden curriculum. As advances in knowledge, science, and technology emerged, nurse educators' added content to nursing education curriculum in an effort to prepare students sufficiently with the knowledge and skills needed as a new nurse. To address the issue of content saturation, the current trend in nursing education is to move from a traditional curriculum to a concept-based curriculum. The concept-based curriculum approach emphasizes student centered learning; student centered learning employs teaching strategies that …

Kittenomics: Modeling Economics And Outcomes In The Municipal Animal Shelter, Sue Marie Neal May 2018

Kittenomics: Modeling Economics And Outcomes In The Municipal Animal Shelter, Sue Marie Neal

Student Theses and Dissertations

Kittenomics is a logical, rational framework for the tracking and evaluation of economic indicators in the municipal animal sheltering industry. The framework was developed as a model of how spending can be discretely quantified, operationalized and analyzed. In addition to establishing this model framework, the impact of live outcome best practices on the economic model is also discussed. The final contribution of my thesis explores an empirical dataset to evaluation the relationship between agency spending and live outcomes. While not focused on predictive powers, the regression model makes the case for the collection of absent data that is critical to …

Opinions In Context: An Exploration Of The Rhetoric Used By Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia And Ruth Bader Ginsburg Regarding The Separation Of Church And State, Catherine Evans

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg represented opposite ends of the political spectrum on the Court, having been appointed by presidents from different parties. Their opinions on cases revolving around the interpretation of separation of church and state do/did not occur within a vacuum, and this paper examines both the context surrounding these opinions and rhetoric of the opinions themselves, closing with a discussion of the former’s effect on the latter. Specifically, four cases (two for each) from the beginning and end of the justices’ careers will be analyzed: Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board v. Pinette …

Proposition 47 And Crime: A Difference In Differences Analysis Of Incarceration Rates And Crime Using Border Counties, Brian J. Fischer May 2018

Proposition 47 And Crime: A Difference In Differences Analysis Of Incarceration Rates And Crime Using Border Counties, Brian J. Fischer

Theses and Dissertations

California passed Proposition 47 by vote and changed the way the state punishes drug and theft. I find an increase in crime using a difference in differences model by computing the change in thefts with the change in inmates. This effect sides with anecdotal claims and disagrees with empirical studies.

Pandemic Planning: Estimating Disease Burden Of Pandemic Influenza To Guide Preparedness Planning Decisions For Nebraska Medicine, Angelia Wimberly May 2018

Pandemic Planning: Estimating Disease Burden Of Pandemic Influenza To Guide Preparedness Planning Decisions For Nebraska Medicine, Angelia Wimberly

Theses & Dissertations

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 “Spanish Flu” outbreak that killed 50-100 million people worldwide. If a pandemic of this proportion happened today, the federal pandemic influenza plan predicts that 30 percent of the population could become infected with up to 50 percent seeking outpatient care. With Nebraska Medicine currently operating at nearly full capacity (95-97%), surge capacity for hospital space, staff, and supplies would be in severe demand and would quickly overwhelm the organization. To assess the impact of pandemic influenza in Douglas County Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine, pandemic modeling tool FluAid and FluSurge 2.0 …

It Takes A Village: Practical Guide For Authorized Encampments, Evanie Parr, Sara Rankin May 2018

It Takes A Village: Practical Guide For Authorized Encampments, Evanie Parr, Sara Rankin

Homeless Rights Advocacy Project

An authorized encampment is a community of unhoused people lawfully living outdoors on another entity’s property. Several cities have implemented authorized encampments as interim options for people experiencing homelessness, but implementation has been haphazard due to a dearth of practical guidance. This brief summarizes the challenges and opportunities posed by encampments hosted by universities, operated by a third party, self-governed, and with compelled participation.

Authorized encampments are proven to have many benefits, including improved service delivery and security, community, and the stability necessary for residents to access permanent housing. This guide summarizes the challenges and opportunities posed by various encampment …
