Background: While individuals diagnosed with Parkinsons disease (PD) often experience cognitive deficits, depression, and fatigue, the relationships among these non-motor sequelae throughout the progression of the disease are unclear. Objective: To examine the relationships among disease severity, depression, and fatigue and investigate the independent contributions of depression and fatigue to a composite measure of cognitive functioning, when controlling for disease severity in PD patients. Methods: A mixed retrospective and prospective sample of PD patients completed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, as well as self-report measures of depression and fatigue. Cognitive functioning was represented by a summary statistic, or cognitive impairment index …

The Effect Of Pleasure Reading On Ninth And Tenth Grade Student's Reading Motivation In An English Language Arts Classroom, Raquell L. Barton Jan 2018

The Effect Of Pleasure Reading On Ninth And Tenth Grade Student's Reading Motivation In An English Language Arts Classroom, Raquell L. Barton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this quasi-experimental, pre-posttest nonequivalent control group study was to compare two types of reading instruction (English Language Arts vs. English Language Arts with pleasure reading) on 9th and 10th-grade students reading motivation. Much of the research on reading motivation is focused on elementary and middle school students, even though the decrease in reading motivation is detrimental at the high school level. Therefore, this study was guided by research questions that examined if there were differences in 9th and 10th-grade high school students' 1) reading motivation, 2) self-concept as a reader, and/or 3) value of reading after participating …

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the comparative change in reported self-efficacy between an experimental group using an interactive, online instructional module and a control group using a traditional handbook. Three research questions were addressed in the study:1. To what extent does completion of an interactive, online training module, as compared to completion of a training manual, affect the self-efficacy of potential volunteer first-time academic competition judges to fulfill their role as a judge after controlling for initial self-efficacy?2. To what extent does completion of an interactive, online training module, as compared to completion of a training …

A Randomized Pilot Trial Assessing A Behavioral Economic Supplement In Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment, Lidia Meshesha Jan 2018

A Randomized Pilot Trial Assessing A Behavioral Economic Supplement In Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment, Lidia Meshesha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Objective. Behavioral economic (BE) research has demonstrated that increasing the salience of delayed substance-free rewards increases individuals capacity for delaying gratification and allocating behavior towards larger, delayed rewards rather than smaller more immediate reward such as alcohol use. This study aimed to improve the efficacy of outpatient alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment by adding elements that target BE mechanisms of change. The study hypothesized that the Substance-free Activity Session (SFAS) intervention will reduce alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, relative reinforcement from alcohol use, and increase future orientation compared to an active control at 3-month follow-up. Method. Participants were 41 adults engaged …

Reactions Of Adult Listeners To Infant Speech-Like Vocalizations And Cry, Hyunjoo Yoo Jan 2018

Reactions Of Adult Listeners To Infant Speech-Like Vocalizations And Cry, Hyunjoo Yoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Caregiver-infant interaction is critical for cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. This dissertation investigated adult responses to infant speech-like (i.e., protophones) and distress vocalizations in three individual projects. Study1 investigated different timing of caregiver responses to protophones and cries. In order for caregivers to respond differently to protophones and cries, they need to be able to differentiate these sounds. Study 2 and Study 3 projects addressed this issue. Infant recordings from a longitudinal study were used for the dissertation. For Study 1 and 3, all-day LENA home recordings were used, and for Study 2, both LENA and laboratory recordings were …

Perceived Cultural Competence And Self-Awareness In Doctoral Psychology Students: Does International Experience Matter?, Sarah K. Hatcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The importance of cultural competence for psychologists and psychology students are discussed at length in theoretical psychology literature. Some authors have suggested that international experiences such as study and work abroad may promote cultural competence. However, few empirical studies explore whether such experiences actually promote intercultural and multicultural competence. The current study investigated whether international experience, defined as time spent outside the United States for the purposes of education, professional training or work, is associated with higher levels of perceived intercultural competence (IC), multicultural competence (MC), and self-awareness among doctoral students in psychology. Two hundred seventy-seven psychology doctorate students from …

In this ecofeminist poststructural performative autoethnography, I explored my own personal journey through prolonged grief, conceptualized as a grief assemblage, while critically examining the functionality of preexisting thought and practices on loss and self-care. The research questions that guided this dissertation were: (1) Who and what constitutes a grief assemblage? (2) How does a grief assemblagea fluid entity of nonhumans and humans that somehow functions togetherproduce me as a woman, a graduate student, and a counselor? (3) How can a reconceptualization of grief as assemblage expand thinking and practices on loss, grief, and self-care? (4) How can an applicable, customizable …

Monstrous Mouths, Im/Mature Lips: Orality And The Queering Of Age And Gender In Contemporary Horror, Kyle Christensen Jan 2018

Monstrous Mouths, Im/Mature Lips: Orality And The Queering Of Age And Gender In Contemporary Horror, Kyle Christensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation analyzes representations of the mouth in the horror genre. I focus on contemporary iterations of well-known figures of horror defined by monstrous uses of the mouth, including the female rape avenger and the act of spitting in I Spit on Your Grave (2010), the blood-drinking vampire in Let Me In (2010), the voice of the slasher horror Final Girl in the television series Scream Queens, and the bite of the Zombie Mouth Fleshlight. I propose the term horr/orality to describe how the mouth provides a vantage point for exploring how identitiesin particular, age and genderare enacted through the …

Yoga Instructor Belief Scale: Instrument Development And Validation, Tegan Jemma Reeves Jan 2018

Yoga Instructor Belief Scale: Instrument Development And Validation, Tegan Jemma Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In response to the growing interest in mind-body practices as preventative, therapeutic and educational interventions, the current work describes the instrument development and validation process to address a gap in yoga research. Yoga is a mind-body practice used in clinical and school settings that uses an integrative curriculum which simultaneously targets skill development/maintenance in physical, cognitive and emotional realms. Yoga is heterogeneous, as there is variability across styles and interventions. Yoga is also educational, as there are integrative skills being learned. The heterogeneous and educational nature of yoga necessitates reporting that accounts for variability in the instruction across instructors of …

Place, Identity, And Language Learning: The Transformative Role Of Place-Based English Language Instruction, Daniel Scott Harper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the intersections of place and second language learning. Learner identity has been found to be an important construct in second language learning. In recent years, place and space have become central topics in the study of sociolinguistics and identity. One area of place and language that has not been studied in depth, however, is whether place plays a role in second language learning. This study begins to fill this gap by examining the second language learning experiences of thirteen Japanese study abroad students who were enrolled in an eight-week, content-based language course. The content of the course …

Racial Differences In Social Support And The Quality Of Life Among Individuals With Chronic Illnesses, Shaila Strayhorn Jan 2018

Racial Differences In Social Support And The Quality Of Life Among Individuals With Chronic Illnesses, Shaila Strayhorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Previous studies have indicated that the association between social support and quality of life (QOL) among individuals with chronic illnesses differs by race, yet the specifics of these association are uncertain. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine racial differences in associations between factors of social support (i.e. sources of informal social support and positive/negative social support) and four QOL domains (i.e., physical well-being, psychological well-being, social well-being, and spiritual well-being) among individuals previously diagnosed with a chronic illness. The study was guided by three aims: 1) to examine common intrapersonal-level (e.g., stress, coping, and self-esteem) and interpersonal-level constructs …

Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani Jan 2018

Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recently, it has become increasingly popular among Saudi students to study abroad. There are, for example, currently 58,726 Saudi students studying at the university level in the United States. During their study abroad (SA) journey, when they wish to say something to someone, they need to determine the situationally-appropriate utterances: What can be said, to whom, where, when, and how. From the interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) perspective, the SA context is assumed to provide more opportunities to communicate with native speakers, and these opportunities are believed to lead to pragmatic gains (Kinginger, 2008, 2009).Guided by five research questions, this study investigated …

Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cigarette smoking can seriously impede cancer treatment and leads to poorer treatment response. Fortunately, even when patients have cancer, smoking cessation has significant benefits. However, there have not been many successful well-controlled studies assessing smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. The present study aimed to expand upon the current literature by exploring sample characteristics and individual differences in this understudied population. Data were collected from 649 adult participants at a mid-South community-based cancer center. Three measures were developed and subjected to factor analysis to assess level of health literacy, perceived stigma, and oncology-related triggers in this sample. These variables were …

The Subjective Experience Of Stuttering, Christopher Constantino Jan 2018

The Subjective Experience Of Stuttering, Christopher Constantino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation, I investigate the subjective experience of stuttering. I use two distinct methodologies to look at two different aspects of the stuttering experience. In the first paper, I use a post-structural qualitative research methodology to better understand the experience of passing as fluent. In the second paper, I use the experience sampling method to quantify the mental and physical effort, what I call spontaneity, of stuttered speech. When a person who stutters can hide their stuttering to the extent that others do not know they stutter, they are said to pass as fluent. In the first paper I seek …

The Role Of Source Monitoring In Resolving Cognitive Disequilibrium On Texts With Controversial Topics, Shi Feng Jan 2018

The Role Of Source Monitoring In Resolving Cognitive Disequilibrium On Texts With Controversial Topics, Shi Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation investigated the effects of text position (i.e. the position that the author of the text who argues in support of a controversial issue), agent roles (tutor versus student), and agent speech acts on source monitoring and how these factors impact memory for information in a learning environment with conversational agents. Previous research on learning from text with conversational agents has supported the claim that agent disagreements stimulate a state of cognitive disequilibrium and confusion in the participants, which leads to deep learning when resolved. Source monitoring is one plausible strategy to resolve conflict engendered from cognitive disequilibrium. This …

A Belated Arrival: The Delayed Acceptance Of Musical Modernity In Irish Composition, Mark Fitzgerald Jan 2018

A Belated Arrival: The Delayed Acceptance Of Musical Modernity In Irish Composition, Mark Fitzgerald

Articles

The chronic lack of investment in the capital needed to foster the development of music during the period of colonial governance in Ireland and the early years of the Free State, combined with Ireland’s peripheral position in relation to the centres of musical modernism, resulted in composers in Ireland adopting modernist ideas at a very late stage, particularly in comparison with the chronology of Irish literary modernism. Previous literature on the subject of Irish musical modernism has frequently obscured any clear sense of the real extent of this delay through the conflation of the concept of “modernism” with styles that …

This area, while impacted by the Brexit uncertainty, shares many of the economic and developmental characteristics of border areas throughout Europe. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of Brexit on cross border trade by the construction sector in Ireland and investigate the current tensions and barriers to that sector. A qualitative methodology adopted a literature review and semi-structured interview strategy. Data was collected from purposively selected …

Attaining Scientific Literacy Through A Rhetoric Of Science Composition Pedagogy, Stephen C. Smith Jan 2018

Attaining Scientific Literacy Through A Rhetoric Of Science Composition Pedagogy, Stephen C. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

For the past sixty years, acquiring scientific literacy has proven to be a daunting task in education, especially for undergraduate nonscience majors. Although some education scholars have recognized the importance and use of arguments to teach science, these pedagogical practices often are aimed at primary school children rather than college students or involve reporting science experiments rather than actually studying or constructing arguments about issues related to science. However, in this dissertation, I contend that educators often neglect a more available tool that not only examines arguments concerning scientific issues but also demonstrates the very heart of scientific literacy: critical thinking. …

Essays In Finance, Management, And Real Estate, Minxing Sun Jan 2018

Essays In Finance, Management, And Real Estate, Minxing Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation presents three papers in three different areas: finance, management and real estate. The first essay investigates whether CEO gender influences the likelihood of dismissal. We theorize and find that, ceteris paribus, female CEOs are significantly more likely to be dismissed than male CEOs. Perhaps even more importantly, we find a CEO gender by firm performance interaction such that male CEOs are less likely to be dismissed when firm performance is high (compared to when it is low), whereas female CEOs have a similar level of dismissal likelihood regardless of firm performance. The second essay illustrates that managers strategically …
