Information Availability And Congeniality, Selective Exposure, And Reinforcement Effect, Kunto Adi Wibowo

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study examined the effect of information availability on selective exposure and the effect of selective exposure on attitude reinforcement through emotional arousal. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias theories were utilized as framework to answer the effect of information availability. For the attitude reinforcement through emotional arousal, cognitive dissonance, selective exposure, and affective intelligent theories were employed. This study employed a novel approach by utilizing different proportions of congenial and uncongenial information as experimental conditions, high congenial, high uncongenial, and control conditions, to test the effects of information availability on selective exposure.

Results demonstrated that information availability affects selective exposure …

A Defense Of Epistemic Invariantism And Intellectualism, Lucas Lockard Jan 2018

A Defense Of Epistemic Invariantism And Intellectualism, Lucas Lockard

Wayne State University Dissertations

The traditional view of knowledge includes two plausible claims. The first claim is that the truth-conditions required to know some proposition p do not vary. So, for any two subjects who have the same epistemic position regarding p, either both know that p or both do not know that p. An implication of this invariantist position is that any difference in knowledge will be explained by a difference in their epistemic position. The second claim is that only epistemic or ‘truth-conducive’ reasons are relevant to considerations of knowledge. This intellectualist position has recently come under attack from those who argue …

This paper will explore the evolution of one of the key roles on campus for students with a disability in the context of Universal Design for Learning - that of the Disability Officer. The role of Disability Officer, while neither a teacher or a learner – is primarily occupied with all those engaged in making learning accessible. It is a role that is very much part of the learning experience for any student with a disability. The challenge for Disability Officers on a UDL campus is that while they are part of the learning environment on campus they - similar …

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle Jan 2018

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle

Papers

A universal approach to strategy formulation in higher education implies one that is fit for the many and complex contingencies faced by that institution. Reviews of current form of strategising indicate that the present approach to strategic management falls short of meeting that criterion. The paper suggests that this deficiency might be addressed by adopting a much more fluid perception of the university as an organisation and devising a form of strategic management that that takes greater account of the paradoxical nature of the institution and the environment in which it operates. It argues that deficiencies in the present form …

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham Jan 2018

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham

Papers

Universities are increasingly seeking to open access routes and identify ways of encouraging under-represented groups to consider higher education as an option. This cohort of students often have distinct challenges associated with disability, maturity and socioeconomic disadvantage. Maynooth University, through the Maynooth University access programme (MAP) and the Launchpad Orientation Programme (Launchpad), has proven successful in supporting these groups, helping them transition into and through higher education. Unfortunately the challenges associated with under-represented groups can lead to increased, often unarticulated difficulties, resulting in greater reliance on services and higher dropout rates compared to the average student. We discuss here a …

The Constituent Year Effect: Relative Age Disparities In Australian Masters Track And Field Athletic Participation, Nikola Medic, Jasmine Lares, Bradley W. Young Jan 2018

The Constituent Year Effect: Relative Age Disparities In Australian Masters Track And Field Athletic Participation, Nikola Medic, Jasmine Lares, Bradley W. Young

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The constituent year effect, a source of relative age disparities, in masters sport has been demonstrated mainly amongst North American samples. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether a participation-related constituent year effect exists among athletes (n = 6492) competing in Australian Masters Athletics competitions between 2000 and 2014. The results indicated that a participation-related constituent year effect was observed as the likelihood of participating was significantly higher for masters athletes in their first and second constituent year of any five-year age category (p < 0.0001) and was lower when they were in the fourth or fifth constituent year. The results also indicated this effect is influenced by gender and age. Specifically, the effect was significant for both male (p < 0.0001) and female (p < 0.001) masters athletes; as well during the third, sixth, seventh, and eighth + decades of life (all ps < 0.001). These data demonstrate that despite masters sport being an avenue for promotion of participation and overall health, there is potential for improving how competitive organizational strategies are implemented given the recurring intermittent patterns of participation associated with five-year age brackets which are likely to compromise benefits.

Role Of Breastfeeding Duration, Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy, And Dna-Methylation For The Risk Of Eczema, Nandini Mukherjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prior studies linking breastfeeding duration and maternal gestational smoking, respectively, to offspring eczema report contradictory findings. However, it is not known whether maternal gestational smoking and breastfeeding duration can jointly influence eczema and whether these exposures mediate their effect on eczema via DNA Methylation (DNA-M) of CpG (cytosine-phosphate-guanine) sites. With data from the Isle of Wight (IOW) birth cohort, UK, we first evaluated the combined effect of maternal gestational smoking and breastfeeding duration on eczema at ages 1-to-2 (n=980), 4 (n=902), 10 (n=966), and 18 years (n=929) using Generalized estimating equations (GEE). We found a protective effect of longer duration …

Arachidonoyl Serotonin (Aa-5-Ht) Modulates Exploratory Anxiety-Related Behavior And Tunes Mesolimbic Dopamine Transmission, Timothy Glenn Freels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cannabinergic and vanilloidergic signaling are mechanisms of interest for the treatment of anxiety symptoms due to the anxiolytic properties of cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) activation and transient potential vanilloid type 1 channel (TRPV1) inhibition. Arachidonoyl serotonin (AA-5-HT), a dual fatty acid amide hydrolase and TRPV1 inhibitor provides an efficient means of modulating these systems. We therefore examined the effects of AA-5-HT on anxiety- and fear-like behaviors in male low (C57BL/6J; [B6]) and high (BALB/cJ; [BCJ]) anxiety mice in light/dark box (LDB), open-field (OF), and fear extinction (FE) paradigms. AA-5-HT (1 mg/kg) administration did not affect anxiety-related behaviors in the …
