Application And Influence Of Technology On Medication Adherence In Adults With Heart Failure: An Integrative Literature Review, Kristen Loda Nov 2018

Application And Influence Of Technology On Medication Adherence In Adults With Heart Failure: An Integrative Literature Review, Kristen Loda

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Heart failure is a progressive disease that presents itself through multiple debilitating symptoms. Being there is no cure, symptom management and prevention through a tailored polypharmaceutical regimen is key to keeping these patients out of the hospital and improving their quality of life. Considering as of 2014, 6 million Americans are living with heart failure, it is crucial to implement interventions to promote medication adherence. Emerging technologies can provide patients the opportunity to remotely monitor their self-care and better adhere to their drug regimens.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify forms of technology available to …

Epistemological Disjunctivism: An Analysis And A Critique, Krupa Patel Nov 2018

Epistemological Disjunctivism: An Analysis And A Critique, Krupa Patel

Philosophy ETDs

In this dissertation, I focus on the epistemological concerns regarding a disjunctivist theory of perception. More specifically, I focus on a critique of epistemological disjunctivism, a thesis about how our beliefs about the world are supported by perception. In order to explain the possibility of perceptual knowledge, an epistemological disjunctivist argues that one’s epistemic support in a good case, seeing that p (e.g., seeing that there is a lemon on the table), is different in kind from one’s epistemic support in a bad case, seeming to see that p (e.g., seeming to see that there is a lemon on the …

Resilience And College Persistence: Characterizing Students Who Have Failed Courses, Mary Merrifield Nov 2018

Resilience And College Persistence: Characterizing Students Who Have Failed Courses, Mary Merrifield

Dissertations

Students who fail a course early in their college careers are at risk of leaving college before completion of their programs. Little is known about this high-risk group and why some members of this group complete their programs while others do not. This research addressed this gap in the college-level persistence literature by focusing first on differences between completers and non-completers, then on differences between students who fail a course early in their college careers but become completers or non-completers. The goal was to understand the protective value of individual traits beyond the prediction of risk based on membership to …

The Adoption Of Connected Autonomous Vehicles And Other Innovations By Freight Transportation Organizations, Jesse Simpson Nov 2018

The Adoption Of Connected Autonomous Vehicles And Other Innovations By Freight Transportation Organizations, Jesse Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis presents a disaggregate market penetration model for freight transportation organizations adopting connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology and other transportation innovations. Innovation adoption research has largely ignored organizational adoption, and little work has been done to understand or predict the adoption of innovations by freight organizations. Therefore, numerous innovation adoption theoretical and methodological approaches are examined to determine which strategies are most appropriate for freight organizational adoption, with connected autonomous vehicles as a case study. A cellular automata model is generated using the theory of the diffusion of innovations and the principles of the Bass model. The model allows …

The Impact Of Sample Size In Cross-Classified Multiple Membership Multilevel Models, Hyewon Chung, Jiseon Kim, Ryoungsun Park, Hyeonjeong Jean

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A simulation study was conducted to examine parameter recovery in a cross-classified multiple membership multilevel model. No substantial relative bias was identified for the fixed effect or level-one variance component estimates. However, the level-two cross-classification multiple membership factor variance components were substantially biased with relatively fewer groups.

Maternal Sexuality During Lactation: The Influence Of Breastfeeding Recency And Relationship Quality, Melissa A. Eaton Nov 2018

Maternal Sexuality During Lactation: The Influence Of Breastfeeding Recency And Relationship Quality, Melissa A. Eaton

Psychology ETDs

Introduction. During lactation, breastfeeders report reduced sexual desire and sexual activity (Von Sydow, 1999). Yet research has not examined the direct impact of suckling on sexuality during lactation. This study looked at breastfeeders, immediately following breastfeeding and several hours later, to determine if the recency of infant suckling influences maternal sexuality. Sexual motivations were also compared between breastfeeders and other mothers. Methods. Mothers of infants between 2 and 7 months of age participated in the repeated measures study online. Participants were randomly assigned to the order of their sessions and participated 20 minutes after breastfeeding or 120 minutes after …

Perspectives Of Caregivers And Volunteers On Stepping Stones For People With Dementia, Areum Han, Diane Brown Nov 2018

Perspectives Of Caregivers And Volunteers On Stepping Stones For People With Dementia, Areum Han, Diane Brown

Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rationale: Current knowledge in experiences and potential benefits of group-based activity programmes on people with dementia and their caregivers is inconsistent, depending on the quality of interventions. Lacking standardisation in the programme’s content and structure, therefore, requires research in a structured group-based activity programme with more details. Objectives: This study explored perspectives of spouses of people with dementia and older volunteers about Stepping Stones, involving a theme-based activity group and a support group. Methodology: Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse individual interview data with 12 people. Results: Findings suggest that (1) Stepping Stones promotes participation of people with dementia …

An Investigation Into The Learning Experiences Of Adolescents With Perceived Dual Exceptionalities Within Gifted And Special Education Middle Grades Settings, Whitney Bailey Nov 2018

An Investigation Into The Learning Experiences Of Adolescents With Perceived Dual Exceptionalities Within Gifted And Special Education Middle Grades Settings, Whitney Bailey

Doctor of Education in Special Education Dissertations

Students who possess both a disability and characteristics of giftedness are referred to as students with dual exceptionalities. This paradoxical relationship of disability and giftedness creates a challenge for teachers and students, particularly in schools that do not have a specific program for students with dual exceptionalities. Most of these students typically receive the majority of their instruction either within a special education program, or a gifted education program. Students with perceived dual exceptionalities are often able to mask their disabilities with strengths in other major areas. The students in this investigation have all demonstrated strong talent in mathematics. They …

Surface Acting, Emotional Exhaustion, And Employee Sabotage To Customers: Moderating Roles Of Quality Of Social Exchanges, Hui Zhang, Zhiqing E. Zhou, Yan Zhan, Chengbin Liu, Li Zhang Nov 2018

Surface Acting, Emotional Exhaustion, And Employee Sabotage To Customers: Moderating Roles Of Quality Of Social Exchanges, Hui Zhang, Zhiqing E. Zhou, Yan Zhan, Chengbin Liu, Li Zhang

Publications and Research

Using the conservation of resources theory and social exchange theory as our conceptual frameworks, the current study examined how employee surface acting relates to their sabotage to customers through the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and explored the moderating roles of coworker exchange (CWX) and leader-member exchange (LMX). We collected two-wave time-lagged data from 540 clinical nurses and found that emotional exhaustion mediated the positive relationship between surface acting and employee sabotage to customers. In addition, we found that CWX buffered the positive effect of surface acting on emotional exhaustion, while LMX buffered the positive effect of emotional exhaustion on …

Parenting A Child With A Chronic Health Condition: Examining Caregivers’ Health Outcomes, Courtney R. Lincoln Nov 2018

Parenting A Child With A Chronic Health Condition: Examining Caregivers’ Health Outcomes, Courtney R. Lincoln

Doctoral Dissertations

The prevalence of chronic health conditions (CHCs) in childhood is increasing, and more parents must learn to contend with the challenge of providing care to a child with a CHC (Cousino & Hazen, 2013; Klassen et al., 2007; Perrin et al., 2007; Pinquart, 2013; Van Cleave et al., 2010). Previous research indicates that parents of a child with a CHC experience high levels of caregiver burden and psychological distress along with high levels of perceived benefit as a result of parenting their child (Brandon, 2007; Chen & Newacheck, 2006; Guðmundsdóttir et al., 2006; Hatzmann et al., 2014; Hungerbuehler et al., …

The Politics Of Shame In The Motivation To Virtue: Lessons From The Shame, Pride, And Humility Experiences Of Lgbt Conservative Christians And Their Allies, Theresa W. Tobin, Dawne Moon Nov 2018

The Politics Of Shame In The Motivation To Virtue: Lessons From The Shame, Pride, And Humility Experiences Of Lgbt Conservative Christians And Their Allies, Theresa W. Tobin, Dawne Moon

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Philosophical views defending shame as a catalyst for moral virtue are at odds with empirical data indicating that shame often yields psychologically unhealthy responses for those who feel it, and often motivates in them morally worse action than whatever occasioned the initial shame experience. Our interdisciplinary ethnographic study analyzes the shame experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) conservative Christians and the church members who once shamed them but are now allies. In this context, shame, humility, and proper pride work together amid hierarchies of social power to influence peoples’ motivation, ability, or lack thereof to love and care …

Surveillance, Anticipation And Firefighting In Hospital: Perspectives Of Patient Safety From A New Zealand Case Study, J Wailing, B Robinson, Ma Coombs

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Aim This study explored how doctors, nurses and managers working in a New Zealand tertiary hospital understand patient safety. Background Despite health care systems implementing proven safety strategies from high reliability organisations, such as aviation and nuclear power, these have not been uniformly adopted by health care professionals with concerns raised about clinician engagement. Design Instrumental, embedded case study design using qualitative methods. Methods The study used purposeful sampling, and data was collected using focus groups and semi-structured interviews with doctors (n = 31); registered nurses (n = 19); and senior organisational managers (n = 3) in a New Zealand …

The Voice And The Self: Does Interoceptive Awareness Predict Voice Congruence?, Karen Marie Crow Nov 2018

The Voice And The Self: Does Interoceptive Awareness Predict Voice Congruence?, Karen Marie Crow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Voices are idiosyncratic manifestations of individuals and contribute to unique self-representation. Interocpetion is the body's ability to perceive its internal physiological state(s). An individual's interoceptive abilities correlate with emotional and perceptual experience, which poses inplications for cognition, self-perception, and personality. Given the links between the voice and the sense-of-self, populations experiencing voice impairment may experience an altered sense of self. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which interoceptive awareness predicts voice congruence in individiuals with normal, healthy voices. Fifty individuals underwent an interoceptive awareness task and were split into two groups, high and low interoceptive …

Early Identification Of Students In Accelerated Curricula With Signs Of Academic And Emotional Risk: Working With Teachers To Identify At-Risk Students, Elizabeth D. Storey Nov 2018

Early Identification Of Students In Accelerated Curricula With Signs Of Academic And Emotional Risk: Working With Teachers To Identify At-Risk Students, Elizabeth D. Storey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As part of a comprehensive, multi-tiered system of support for students’ emotional, academic, and behavioral success, effective universal screenings are essential to identify students who may benefit from early intervention and targeted prevention services (Strein, Kuhn-McKearin, & Finney, 2014). Although many screening procedures and methods have been developed and evaluated for general education populations, more research is needed on screening procedures designed for one traditionally underserved population in school-based mental health services—students in accelerated curricula (namely, students in Advanced Placement classes or in the International Baccalaureate program; AP/IB). When teachers are involved in universal screening procedures, regardless of student population …

Can Soft Regulation Prevent Financial Crises?: The Dutch Central Bank's Supervision Of Behavior And Culture., Cynthia A. Williams, John M. Conley, Lodewijk Smeehuijzen, Deborah Rupp

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Financial regulation has traditionally been “hard”: national legislatures and regulators (and sometimes international bodies) require certain kinds of behavior and forbid others, on pain of business sanctions, fines, or even criminal penalties. When a financial crisis happens, the usual after-the-fact response is more hard regulation. That pattern goes back at least to the 1929 market crash that precipitated the Great Depression.

But financial crises still occur, leading many observers to wonder if what the financial world needs is a way to identify those pathological risk-takers in advance and, perhaps more importantly, to make sure that the financial institutions that employ …

Eating Disorder Curriculum: In-Service For Elementary Teachers, Troy Roness Nov 2018

Eating Disorder Curriculum: In-Service For Elementary Teachers, Troy Roness

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this project is to highlight the significant need for an eating disorder curriculum and/or in-service for educators in the school system. This project includes an in-service that is tailored for elementary school teachers in the areas of eating disorder identification, warning signs, resources, lesson planning cautions, where to turn for help, and what to do when dealing with a student who is struggling. The research behind this project highlighted an extreme deficit in teacher preparedness for students with eating disorders and a self-identified lack of confidence in their ability to handle such situations. I hope this training …

Body And Time: The Temporality Of Human Embodiment, Daniel Harland Briggs Jr. Nov 2018

Body And Time: The Temporality Of Human Embodiment, Daniel Harland Briggs Jr.

Philosophy ETDs

In this dissertation I hope to shed further light on Heidegger’s thought-provoking claim that “We do not “have” a body; rather, we “are” bodily.” After discussing the problem of the body in the context of Being and Time in chapters one and two, I move to Heidegger’s later lectures and seminars in chapter three to articulate a specifically Heideggerian account of the bodying of the body. I hope to show that Heidegger’s understanding of the ontological difference can effectively help us to understand bodily difference in its corporeal, lived, and existential dimensions. From a Heideggerian standpoint, the existential dimensions of …
