The Development Of Social Capital Through International Students' Involvement In Campus Organizations, Chris R. Glass, Peggy Gesing
The Development Of Social Capital Through International Students' Involvement In Campus Organizations, Chris R. Glass, Peggy Gesing
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
This study examines campus organization involvement as a mechanism for social capital development. Researchers used analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine variations in network size, strength, and composition for international students involved in different types of campus organizations. The researchers also examined the relationship of campus organization involvement to international students’ sense of attachment to the university. Students who participated in major-based organizations or leadership programs had larger, less dense, more diverse networks that lead to social networks which are particularly advantageous to social mobility. Students who participated in campus organizations related to their own cultural heritage had networks built …
Intonation Production And Perception In Children With Developmental Language Impairment, Afua Blay
Intonation Production And Perception In Children With Developmental Language Impairment, Afua Blay
Theses and Dissertations
Studies on intonation production and perception in children with developmental language impairment (LI) have reported mixed outcomes. Some suggest that intonation processing is impaired in this population but others fail to find any evidence of such a deficit. The issue is further complicated by findings that indicate that these children perform poorly on some intonation tasks but not on others. The source of the discrepant findings is unclear. However, one shortcoming is that most previous studies do not report information on severity of LI of participants. Thus, it may be that the mixed findings on intonation processing in children with …
Bystander Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault: An Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Online And In-Person Bystander Intervention Training, Morgan Paige Devine
Bystander Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault: An Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Online And In-Person Bystander Intervention Training, Morgan Paige Devine
Theses and Dissertations
To address the alarming rates of sexual assaults on college campuses, the 2013 Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act required publicly funded colleges to provide some form of sexual assault intervention training to college students. While bystander intervention training is the most common form of primary prevention, there is little research indicating whether online or in-person bystander training is more effective at producing strong bystander self-efficacy and whether bystander intervention is actually occurring. Utilizing data from the 2017 Multi College Bystander Education Efficacy survey taken online by undergraduate students (N = 387) at a Midwestern university, an analysis of self-reported bystander …

Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak
Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak
Theses and Dissertations
This work details the development of the Critical Phase Analysis Tool (CPAT), a tool for analyzing and grading the quality of approach and landing phases of flight for the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID). General Aviation (GA) accounts for the highest accident rates in Civil Aviation, and the approach and landing phases are when a majority of these accidents occur. Since GA aircraft typically lack most of the sophisticated technology that exists within Commercial Aviation, detecting phases of flight can be difficult. Moreover, because of the high variability in GA operations and abilities of the pilot, detecting unsafe …

Enhancement Of Phoshorus Removal Via Bioretention Cells Amended With Low Cost Materials, Nick Lindstrom
Enhancement Of Phoshorus Removal Via Bioretention Cells Amended With Low Cost Materials, Nick Lindstrom
Theses and Dissertations
As bioretention systems are becoming an increasingly popular low impact development (LID) application for stormwater mitigation, they lack mechanisms that demobilize phosphorus (P) especially dissolved phosphorus (DP). In many cases, these LIDs release more P than is input due to a high P index derived from the plant material inherent within bioretention systems. The objectives of this project are to utilize low-cost water treatment residuals (WTR) as bioretention amendments to capture P. The adsorption characteristics are observed by means of batch level experiments to observe the P adsorption potential without the influence of hydraulic parameters, and column experiments to observe …
Women Engineering Majors' Choice To Stay: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Persistence Experiences, Victoria Morrissette
Women Engineering Majors' Choice To Stay: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Persistence Experiences, Victoria Morrissette
Theses and Dissertations
The historical underrepresentation of women in engineering persists for women engineering majors in college and once they enter the workforce. While some engineering disciplines have seen an increase in women students, overall the numbers still have fallen well behind other STEM disciplines despite years of research. Most studies on this issue have been quantitative and have looked at factors associated with why women leave engineering. This qualitative study, in contrast, gave women engineering majors the opportunity to share their experiences in answer to the question of why women choose to stay in an engineering major. Phenomenological methods, including semi-structured interviews, …

Through this examination, multiple oppressions were illuminated. Participants identified both personal experiences of oppression and oppression related to administrative and interdisciplinary hierarchies. Additionally, the participants provided their insights on the concept of empowerment. Definitions of empowerment included being a voice for self and others and empowering others is empowering to self. Thus, the concept of relational empowerment was explicated. Furthermore, the participants envisioned an ideal environment where administration is supportive of nurses, nurses have time to care for the patients, …
A Channel Ranking And Selection Scheme Based On Channel Occupancy And Snr For Cognitive Radio Systems, Adnan Quadri
A Channel Ranking And Selection Scheme Based On Channel Occupancy And Snr For Cognitive Radio Systems, Adnan Quadri
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless networks and information traffic have grown exponentially over the last decade. Consequently, an increase in demand for radio spectrum frequency bandwidth has resulted. Recent studies have shown that with the current fixed spectrum allocation (FSA), radio frequency band utilization ranges from 15% to 85%. Therefore, there are spectrum holes that are not utilized all the time by the licensed users, and, thus the radio spectrum is inefficiently exploited. To solve the problem of scarcity and inefficient utilization of the spectrum resources, dynamic spectrum access has been proposed as a solution to enable sharing and using available frequency channels. With …
Effects Of Friction Stir Welding Parameters On The Mechanical Properties Of Am60 And Al-Si Cast Alloys, Sara Richmire-Kint
Effects Of Friction Stir Welding Parameters On The Mechanical Properties Of Am60 And Al-Si Cast Alloys, Sara Richmire-Kint
Theses and Dissertations
Friction stir welding, as a solid-state joining method, seems a viable joining/assembly method for difficult-to-weld cast magnesium and cast aluminum alloys. Due to the high flammability of Mg alloys, and the brittle joints of welded Al alloys, fusion based welding techniques may not be successful to join Mg or Al made component. Therefore, a solid-state operation, in which applied heat input and induced temperature within the work piece are below the melting temperature of the base alloys, can be considered as a viable method to join so-called unweldable Mg and Al alloys. To this end, friction stir welding, as one …

Northern Great Plains Blizzards In Past And Future Climates, Alexander Trellinger
Northern Great Plains Blizzards In Past And Future Climates, Alexander Trellinger
Theses and Dissertations
Areas that reside in the high-latitudes such as the northern United States can experience hazardous conditions during the winter months due to snowstorms. When strong winds exist with falling or freshly fallen snow, blizzard conditions are able create significant personal, societal, and economic impacts for the Northern Great Plains. While the climatology for these extreme snowstorms is known, the frequency and intensity of how these events may change in a warming climate is not certain. In order to determine how extreme snowstorms may change in the future climate, climate models can be used but the horizontal and vertical grid spacing …

On The Spatial Modelling Of Mixed And Constrained Geospatial Data, Hassan Talebi
On The Spatial Modelling Of Mixed And Constrained Geospatial Data, Hassan Talebi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Spatial uncertainty modelling and prediction of a set of regionalized dependent variables from various sample spaces (e.g. continuous and categorical) is a common challenge for geoscience modellers and many geoscience applications such as evaluation of mineral resources, characterization of oil reservoirs or hydrology of groundwater. To consider the complex statistical and spatial relationships, categorical data such as rock types, soil types, alteration units, and continental crustal blocks should be modelled jointly with other continuous attributes (e.g. porosity, permeability, seismic velocity, mineral and geochemical compositions or pollutant concentration). These multivariate geospatial data normally have complex statistical and spatial relationships which should …

Maximization Vs. Inclusion As A Value Conflict In Development Work, Johnny Ramírez-Johnson, Héctor Luis Díaz, Vijayan Kumara Pillai
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article builds on previous research studies strongly suggesting that high levels of social capital are positively associated with the economic and political progress of community residents. As previously proposed by the authors of this article, such findings may encourage policy makers of government and non-governmental development organizations to concentrate their efforts and resources in communities whose residents have been identified as having high levels of social capital. Policy- makers may view pre-existing high levels of social capital among community residents as a factor likely to increase the level of success of their respective socio-economic development initiatives. Such course of …
