Investigation Of Rotational Deviations On Single Fiducial Tumor Tracking With Simulated Respiratory Motion Using Synchrony® Respiratory Motion Tracking For Cyberknife® Treatment, Zachary A. Christ
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
It is hypothesized that the uncertainty of the Synchrony® model from the rotation of a geometrically asymmetrical single fiducial shall be non-zero during the motion tracking. To validate this hypothesis, the uncertainty was measured for a Synchrony® model built for a respiratory motion phantom oriented at different yaw angles on a Cyberknife® treatment table. A Mini-ball Cube with three cylindrical GoldMark™ (1mmx5mm Au) numbered fiducials was placed inside a respiratory phantom and used for all tests. The fiducial with the least artifact interference was selected for the motion tracking. A 2cm periodic, longitudinal, linear motion of the Mini-ball cube was …

Myokine Cathepsin B Expression With Exercise Training In The 3xtg-Ad Murine Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Hector G. Paez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This research investigated the relationship between exercise training and cathepsin B expression in the 3xTg-AD murine model of Alzheimer’s disease. 3xTg-AD mice were assigned to control (Tg, n=10), aerobic training (Tg+AT, n=10), or resistance training (Tg+RT, n=10). RotaRod peak latency and grip strength were assessed as preand post-measurements. Skeletal muscle was collected after training and analyzed for cathepsin B protein. Tg+RT showed greater grip strength than Tg and Tg+AT at posttesting (p ≤ 0.05). Only Tg+AT showed an improvement in RotaRod peak latency (p ≤ 0.05). Gastrocnemius weight was greater in Tg+RT compared to Tg (p ≤ 0.05), and no …
Movement And Habitat Use Of Whitespotted Eagle Rays, Aetobatus Narinari, Throughout Florida, Breanna Clarice Degroot
Movement And Habitat Use Of Whitespotted Eagle Rays, Aetobatus Narinari, Throughout Florida, Breanna Clarice Degroot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Elasmobranchs play ecologically important roles in coastal environments. Unfortunately, the basic distribution and movement patterns of these species, particularly rays, remain relatively unknown. This is especially true for the Whitespotted Eagle Ray (Aetobatus narinari), a protected species in Florida with poorly described migratory and habitat use patterns. I employed a combination of acoustic telemetry techniques to reveal multi-scale spatial patterns of A. narinari around Florida. Movement patterns between the east and west coast individuals were distinct; a majority of west coast tagged A. narinari exhibited migratory or transient behavior while most east coast tagged individuals remained resident in the Indian …
On The Nature Of Neural Causality In Large-Scale Brain Networks: Foundations, Modeling And Nonlinear Neurodynamics, Michael Mannino
On The Nature Of Neural Causality In Large-Scale Brain Networks: Foundations, Modeling And Nonlinear Neurodynamics, Michael Mannino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
We examine the nature of causality as it exists within large-scale brain networks by first providing a rigorous conceptual analysis of probabilistic causality as distinct from deterministic causality. We then use information-theoretic methods, including the linear autoregressive modeling technique of Wiener-Granger causality (WGC), and Shannonian transfer entropy (TE), to explore and recover causal relations between two neural masses. Time series data were generated by Stefanescu-Jirsa 3D model of two coupled network nodes in The Virtual Brain (TVB), a novel neuroinformatics platform used to model resting state large-scale networks with neural mass models. We then extended this analysis to three nodes …

Morphologic Evolution And Alongshore Variability Of Two Nourishment Projects In Southeast Fl, Usa, Thomas A. Shahan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
For the last several decades, beach nourishment has been a widely implemented erosion mitigation strategy along many developed coastlines. Measuring subsequent patterns of erosion and accretion can help elucidate local sediment transport trends, improve time scale predictions of profile equilibration, decrease renourishment intervals, and adjust future engineering design of nourishments. This study evaluates the morphologic evolution of two beach nourishment projects (e.g., characterized as a full and partial nourishment) at the same location in Boca Raton, Florida using time series beach profiles, surface sediment samples, and wave data. More than 85% of sediment volume was retained within the full nourishment …

Non-Separable Superpositions Of Complex Phase Front And Polarization States In Classical-Singular And Quantum-Entangled Optics, Behzad Khajavi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The angular momentum of light originates from two sources: one is the spin angular momentum (SAM) of individual photons, which is related to the polarization of light and the other is the orbital angular momentum (OAM) associated with helical wavefront of the light if it is helically phased (complex phase front). A beam of light that is composed of photons possessing both OAM and SAM states can be used in different areas of study such as rotating microscopic particles, interacting with nonlinear materials, investigating atom-light interactions, communication and medical imaging technologies, quantum information, quantum entanglement and etc. In this dissertation …

Noncoding Rnas As Novel Pancreatic Cancer Targets, Amy Makler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Pancreatic cancer is an abhorrent malignancy with limited diagnostics and response to drug therapy. It is believed that noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) will further the understanding behind the mechanisms of pancreatic cancer development and progression, providing a novel approach for drug development and biomarker discovery. Therefore, a database of pancreatic cancer ncRNAs was established using bioinformatics and text mining approaches. These ncRNAs were characterized for RNA expression, copy number variation, disease association, single nucleotide polymorphisms, secretome analysis, and identification of protein targets. Exosomal proteins and ncRNA identified through this study provide the basis for noninvasive diagnostic potential. Additionally, a secreted microRNA, …
Operating Leverage’S Role In Stock Returns, The Value Premium, And The Profitability Premium: International Evidence, Benjamin A. Jansen
Operating Leverage’S Role In Stock Returns, The Value Premium, And The Profitability Premium: International Evidence, Benjamin A. Jansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation investigates the association of operating leverage with stock returns, the value premium, and the profitability premium. Results in the first essay support the hypothesis that operating leverage is related to stock returns and the value premium across the sampled countries. Results are robust to cross-country differences, typical controls, multiple definitions of operating and financial leverage, and while controlling for the endogeneity of operating and financial leverage. This suggests that the rational explanation for the presence of the value premium lies in the underlying risk exposure of fixed asset risk of operating leverage which is expressed through the value …

Numerical Investigation Of Finite Kuramoto Model With Time Dependent Coupling Strength, Dharma Raj Khatiwada
Numerical Investigation Of Finite Kuramoto Model With Time Dependent Coupling Strength, Dharma Raj Khatiwada
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Synchronization of an ensemble of oscillators is a phenomenon present in systems of different fields, ranging from social and physical to biological and technological systems. The most successful approach to describe how synchrony emerges in these systems is given by the Kuramoto model. This model as it stands, however, assumes oscillators of fixed natural frequencies and a homogeneous all-to-all coupling strength. The Kuramoto model has been analytically discussed to address the synchronization phenomena of coupled oscillators in the thermodynamic limit (N --> ∞). However, there needs to be a modi cation to address the inevitable in uence of external fields …

Potential Efficacy Of The Monte Carlo Dose Calculations Of 6mv Flattening Filter-Free Photon Beam Of M6™ Cyberknife® System, Taindra Neupane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
MapCheck measurements for 50 retrospective patient’s treatment plans suggested that MapCheck could be effectively employed in routine patient specific quality assurance in M6 Cyberknife with beams delivered at different treatment angles. However, these measurements also suggested that for highly intensity modulated MLC plans, field segments of width < 8 mm should further be analyzed with a modified (-4%) correction factor. Results of MC simulations of the M6 Cyberknife using the EGSnrc program for 2-5 millions of incident particles in BEAMnrc and 10-20 millions in DOSXYZnrc have shown dose uncertainties within 2% for open fields from 7.6 x 7.7 mm2 to 100 x 100 mm2. Energy and corresponding FWHM were optimized by comparing with water phantom measurements at 800 mm SAD resulting to E = 7 MeV and FWHM = 2.2 mm. Good agreement of dose profiles (within 2%) and outputs (within 3%) were found between the MC simulations and water phantom measurements for the open fields.

Provoking Southern Christianity: Baptists, Methodists, Schisms And Slavery, Denario Kelly
Provoking Southern Christianity: Baptists, Methodists, Schisms And Slavery, Denario Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis examines the schisms in the antebellum Baptist and Methodist Churches regarding slavery. It was these internal ruptures in both denominations that helped influence life in the slave community. The slave narratives of Henry Bibb, William Wells Brown, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs reveal the impact the schisms had on master-slave relations and slave religious instruction. Moreover, the internal rupture in both denominations over the South‟s peculiar institution was instrumental in spawning a pro-slavery Christianity. This pro-slavery Christianity proved crucial in extending and strengthening white hegemony.

Reproductive Development Of Female Bonefish (Albula Spp.) From The Bahamas, Cameron Alexander Luck
Reproductive Development Of Female Bonefish (Albula Spp.) From The Bahamas, Cameron Alexander Luck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Bonefish (Albula spp.) support an economically important sport fishery, yet little is known regarding the reproductive biology of this genus. Analysis of oocytes histology and sex hormone levels was conducted on wild female bonefish sampled during and outside the spawning season in Grand Bahama, Central Andros, and South Andros, The Bahamas to assess reproductive state. Bonefish are commonly found along shallow water flats, or in pre-spawn aggregations (PSA) during spawning months. 17β-estradiol levels suggest vitellogenic consistency between habitats. However, fish are more reproductively developed at PSA based on the occurrence of larger, more prevalent vitellogenic oocytes and evidence of final …

Self-Esteem Mediates Over-Time Association From Parenting Practices To Adolescent Adjustment, Melissa J. Huey
Self-Esteem Mediates Over-Time Association From Parenting Practices To Adolescent Adjustment, Melissa J. Huey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Adverse parenting practices have adverse effects on child outcomes, ranging from lower academic success (Dornbusch, Ritter, Leiderman, Roberts, & Fraleigh, 1987) to delinquency behavior (Steinberg, Fletcher & Darling, 1994) to adjustment difficulties (Shumow & Lomax, 2009). There is considerable evidence linking poor parenting practices to increases in adolescent adjustment symptoms (e.g. Barnes, Reifman, Farrell, & Dintcheff, 2000). It is likely that there is an explanatory mechanism driving this relationship. The current study tests the hypotheses that associations between adverse parenting behaviors are both directly associated with adjustment problems, and indirectly associated with maladjustment via changes in self-views. A staggered cohort …

Role And Regulation Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr) In A Model Of Oxidative Stress Tolerance: Trachemys Scripta, Melissa Reiterer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The detrimental effects of oxidative stress caused by the accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) have been acknowledged as major factors in aging, senescence and several neurodegenerative diseases and conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and stroke (ischemia/reperfusion). Mammalian models are extremely susceptible to these stresses that follow the restoration of oxygen after anoxia; however, some organisms including the freshwater turtle Trachemys scripta can withstand several bouts of anoxia and repeated reoxygenation without any apparent pathology. T. scripta thus provides us with an alternate vertebrate model in which we can investigate physiological mechanisms of neuroprotection without the damaging effects that come …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Understanding and resolving the water quality problems that Florida Bay has endured requires an understanding of its salinity drivers. Because salinity is the prime factor that drives estuarine ecosystem, Florida Bay’s ecosystem health depends on the correct salinity balance of the Bay. In this thesis, the Regional Oceanic Modeling System - a hydrodynamic prognostic model -was implemented on Florida Bay and it was tailored for shallow waters. Results show that the model captures most of the salinity spatial and temporal variability of Florida Bay. Furthermore, it establishes the role of the major drivers like evaporation, precipitation, and runoff on Florida …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are keystone species mainly due to their burrow construction. Gopher tortoises can also impact the plants around them, but it is rarely quantifiable due to constraints in dispersal studies including time period and seasonality of fruit. The objective of this study was to measure the effect gut-passage has on a native Florida stone-pitted shrub, the cocoplum bush (Chrysobalanus icaco), as well as to attempt to model the relationship between the gopher tortoise and the plant using our unique field site. This study shows that gut-passage has a significant effect on the germination rate of the cocoplum, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The human brain consists of billions of neurons and these neurons pool together in groups at different scales. On one hand, these neural entities tend to behave as single units and on the other hand show collective macroscopic patterns of activity. The neural units communicate with each other and process information over time. This communication is through small electrical impulses which at the macroscopic scale are measurable as brain waves. The electric field that is produced collectively by macroscopic groups of neurons within the brain can be measured on the surface of the skull via a brain imaging modality called …
