The Church Has Left The Building: A Leadership Perspective Of Online Church Versus Traditional Church, Valerie E. Crumpton
The Church Has Left The Building: A Leadership Perspective Of Online Church Versus Traditional Church, Valerie E. Crumpton
Doctor of Ministry
Where it was once thought that the decline of traditional church goers into a brick and mortar edifice meant that America was becoming less “faith based”, the everincreasing number of online worshippers indicates otherwise. Due to the rapidly shifting culture toward an online worship experience, the traditional church must re-evaluate and reform their processes to include this new wave of Christianity. If churches cannot transition to accommodate the new culture of church that is only accessible via the Internet, there is a possibility that they could lose the opportunity to share the Gospel Message with a population that may never …
How Does The Presence And Management Of Leadership Tension Affect Leaders And The Organizations They Lead?, Aaron A. Cole
How Does The Presence And Management Of Leadership Tension Affect Leaders And The Organizations They Lead?, Aaron A. Cole
Doctor of Ministry
Many leaders inside and outside the church struggle with the weight of leadership demands, feeling overwhelmed and intimidated by the tension that comes with leadership. It is not a lack of calling, clarity, or vision on the part of leaders but the tension of moving people toward achieving mission. Such tension, caused by the function of leadership and not necessarily the leader, is a crucial area that tends to cause a leader to rise or fall. Unfortunately, many leaders eject or struggle without success due to a lack of understanding and the skill set necessary to effectively manage leadership tension. …
Helping Clinical Pastoral Education Students Develop An Integrated Theology Of Judgment In A Hospital-Based, Cpe Program At Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Kevin S. Crowder
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Many Clinical Pastoral Education students are averse to judgment. Some do not want to be critiqued or critically engaged. Others believe that pastoral ministry should not include judgment, critique, or conflict whatsoever. This project was conceived to help both groups appreciate that judgment is integral to pastoral care. Between pre- and post-curriculum surveys where changes in students’ attitudes and understanding about judgment were assessed, students participated in judgment-related curriculum including readings, didactic seminars, verbatim presentations of clinical cases, and written assignments. There was some movement in student attitudes and understanding, but not necessarily as anticipated.
Factors Affecting Non-Attendance In Irish Primary Schools And Reasons For Differences Between Urban And Rural Levels Of Non-Attendance, Anne Marie Gurhy, Glen Perry, Mark Farrell
Factors Affecting Non-Attendance In Irish Primary Schools And Reasons For Differences Between Urban And Rural Levels Of Non-Attendance, Anne Marie Gurhy, Glen Perry, Mark Farrell
Reports
This study will investigative the factors that influence school non-attendance, in designated disadvantaged Irish primary schools (DEIS1). Currently, no comprehensive data exists on the factors contributing to the levels and types of non-attendance within the Irish context. Since 2003/2004, the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB, Appendix A) the agency with responsibility for school attendance, has collected specific data on attendance levels and the frequency of non-attendance across all Irish schools. However, this does not provide information at the individual student level (NEWB, 2007).

A Portrait Of A Successful Pastor: Reanimating The Pastor As Shepherd In A Success Oriented Culture, Steve Bontrager
A Portrait Of A Successful Pastor: Reanimating The Pastor As Shepherd In A Success Oriented Culture, Steve Bontrager
Doctor of Ministry
The purpose of this study is to define a set of metrics by which pastors can measure their “success” as pastors. It is important to note that this is not an effort to define a successful church, which would be a different study altogether. Studies show that a great majority of pastors are struggling in life and ministry and it seems reasonable to ask if this could be a result of ambiguity about the role pastors are supposed to fill and what constitutes successfully doing so. It is my contention that many pastors function without a clear sense of metrics …
Creating An Officer Lifescape: A Path For The Vocational And Spiritual Formation Of Salvation Army Officer-Moms, Janene Zielinski
Creating An Officer Lifescape: A Path For The Vocational And Spiritual Formation Of Salvation Army Officer-Moms, Janene Zielinski
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation claims that the formation of a healthy Salvation Army officermom identity is foundational for future organizational leadership development and personal vocational efficacy. Section One explores the historical management of officermoms, root causes of dissatisfaction, and modern barriers to healthy functioning. Section Two describes the deficiencies within three current methods of officer-mom identity formation. Section Three focuses on Scriptural models of identity formation and suggestions for implementation as a formative and sustainable approach in alleviating four key longings of officer-moms. This dissertation proposes that fledgling officer-moms need a safe and reliable mechanism to receive instruction and encouragement in establishing …
Shema, Shabbat, Shalom, And A Savior: Implications For Pastoral Ministry, Richard Hovey
Shema, Shabbat, Shalom, And A Savior: Implications For Pastoral Ministry, Richard Hovey
Doctor of Ministry
In the Global North there are disparaging figures within evangelicalism for both pastors and the churches they lead. Evangelical pastors have lost their moorings, suffering the consequences of a lost call and purpose in ministry. This has lead to an abandonment of post by the contemporary evangelical pastor in North America, and to a church left to drift in a secular sea. This project will suggest an answer in the return to a true pastoral ministry which will have positive implications for both pastor and church. Chapter 1 will provide an overview of the problem within contemporary evangelical pastoral ministry. …

1 Thessalonians is generally believed to be Paul’s earliest extant letter. Depending on the methodology employed for reconstructing a chronology of Paul’s life and letters, 1 Thessalonians is dated from the late 30s to the early 50s of the first century CE.

Working Priests: Improving The Care For Vineyard Bivocational Pastors, Aaron Peterson
Working Priests: Improving The Care For Vineyard Bivocational Pastors, Aaron Peterson
Doctor of Ministry
The number of Vineyard bivocational pastors in the US Vineyard church is unknown, and although pastoring bivocationally is common, there is a current lack of resources available to meet their unique challenges. The Association of Vineyard Churches, USA has improved from where it used to be, but they are currently not where they want to be in terms of caring for Vineyard bivocational pastors. This dissertation explores the current bivocational situation in the Association of Vineyard Churches, USA and argues that the Vineyard needs to take better care of Vineyard pastors who work jobs outside their churches. This project shows …
Sport Faith Life (Calvin Shorts), Brian R. Bolt
Sport Faith Life (Calvin Shorts), Brian R. Bolt
Calvin Press
Sport is something we do, an experience that is hard to describe because it captures our whole selves. Sport draws us in and brings us back, day after day, season after season. We love to play--and yes, to win. Sport can train us, educate us, change us for better or for worse, but that is really not the point. First and foremost, sport is part of a truly abundant human life that Jesus Christ offers for those who love to play. God's world includes the myth-like space where sport resides, where we celebrate our humanness, our desire to be excellent, …

Pastoral Leadership For The Small, Rural Church: The Second Career Pastor, Randall C. Nichols
Pastoral Leadership For The Small, Rural Church: The Second Career Pastor, Randall C. Nichols
Doctor of Ministry
Due to financial and demographic factors plus a shortage of qualified candidates, small, rural churches often struggle to secure and retain pastoral leadership. An examination of these problems from the perspective of the church and that of pastoral candidates reveals the remoteness of location among small, rural churches creates an inability to attract candidates. Faced with college loan indebtedness, young growing families, and the need for full employment for spouses, candidates feel unable to accept a call from a small, rural church. The dissertation reviews the origins of the church, the historical prevalence of the small, rural church, and the …

Authority, Gender, And Sacred Space: The Musical Reform-Ation Brought By Women Cantors, Sophia Yvonne Reinier Doscher
Authority, Gender, And Sacred Space: The Musical Reform-Ation Brought By Women Cantors, Sophia Yvonne Reinier Doscher
Theses & ETDs
Music inspires sacredness even in profane spaces. This thesis examines music’s power in creating sacred space in the context of women cantors in Reform Judaism. In the span of a few decades, the position of women in the Synagogue changed drastically. Filling the role of the cantor in the clergy contributed uniquely to this transformation due to the special impact of music in the development of authority within sacred space. In demonstrating how the power of music gives authority to women in a space where their autonomy has been missing, I focus on the authority of women cantors in their …

God’S Grace And The Marketplace: Mainline Protestant Church, Faith And Business, Sarah Helene Duggin
God’S Grace And The Marketplace: Mainline Protestant Church, Faith And Business, Sarah Helene Duggin
Scholarly Articles
This paper explores the engagement of Mainline Churches with business ethics in the workplace and offers some ideas for how Mainline churches can participate more fully in the work that needs to be done. Part I suggests that, for many years, Mainline churches were less active than one might expect in supporting the development of robust faith perspectives on business ethics, and it identifies possible cultural, financial, and structural factors why this may be so. Many of these factors are common to other religious traditions, although some are particularly relevant to Mainline denominations. The discussion in Part II begins with …
Policy Addressing Family Presence During Resuscitation, Crystal Emanuel-Hayes
Policy Addressing Family Presence During Resuscitation, Crystal Emanuel-Hayes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
When hospitals became the primary care setting for very ill patients, visiting hours and restrictions related to family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) became common. During medical crises that occur in hospital settings, families are separated from loved ones because family members may impair resuscitation efforts or such efforts might psychologically traumatize family members. Various national health care organizations have endorsed family presence during resuscitation; however, practices preventing family presence persist. This project used evidence from the peer-reviewed literature to develop a healthcare institution policy that addresses family presence during resuscitation. Theories, concepts, and models that guided this DNP project included: …
Preparation, Protection, Connection And Embodiment: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Value Of Spiritual Self-Care For Conflict Professionals, Diane Marie Gaston
Preparation, Protection, Connection And Embodiment: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Value Of Spiritual Self-Care For Conflict Professionals, Diane Marie Gaston
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
The field of mediation has emerged as one of the premier tools in the peacemaking process. While mediation has grown in popularity and become widely accepted in the judicial court system and corporate America, very few studies have focused on how mediators are impacted by the conflict resolution process. Moreover, few studies have focused on the role of spiritual self-care on the mediator. This research study explored how mediators who identify as spiritual integrate their spirituality in their own self-care practice. In order for mediation to continue as one of the most important tools in the peacemaking process, mediators of …

Teachers Use Of Fear Appeals And Timing Reminders Prior To High-Stakes Examinations: Pressure From Above, Below, And Within, David W. Putwain, Nathaniel P. Von Der Embse
Educational and Psychological Studies Faculty Publications
Teachers often communicate to students the consequences of success and failure (fear appeals) and the timing (timing reminders) of forthcoming examinations. Prior research has examined how fear appeals and teaching reminders are evaluated by students and how they relate to educational outcomes such as engagement. Few studies have addressed the use of these behaviours from a teacher’s perspective. We examined teacher use of consequence and timing reminders, used prior to examinations, and its relation to perceived accountability pressure, teacher self-efficacy, perceived importance of tested outcomes, and the belief that students would interpret such messages as threatening. Data were collected from …
