A Systems-Based Approach To Fostering Robust Science In Industrial-Organizational Psychology, James A. Grand, Steven G. Rogelberg, Tammy D. Allen, Ronald S. Landis, Douglas H. Reynolds, John C. Scott, Scott Tonidandel, Donald M. Truxillo

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Credibility and trustworthiness are the bedrock upon which any science is built. The strength of these foundations has been increasingly questioned across the sciences as instances of research misconduct and mounting concerns over the prevalence of detrimental research practices have been identified. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to encourage our scientific community to positively and proactively engage in efforts that foster a healthy and robust I-O psychology. We begin by advancing six defining principles that we believe reflect the values of robust science and offer criteria for evaluating proposed efforts to change scientific practices. Recognizing that the contemporary …

Access Without Equity: Institutional Logics Of University Middle Managers And Valuing Diversity, Emerald Templeton Mar 2018

Access Without Equity: Institutional Logics Of University Middle Managers And Valuing Diversity, Emerald Templeton

Doctoral Dissertations

Institutional barriers to Black student success (e.g. a history of exclusion, inaccessibility, and inequity) that exist at the undergraduate level, persist at the graduate level. Though traditionally marginally students have gained access to predominantly and historically White colleges and universities, Black graduate students continue to be marginalized by institutionalized oppression and inequitable structures. When the values, attitudes, and beliefs of individual actors who serve these students are at odds with an institutional mission of equity and inclusion, misalignment and competing priorities emerge. This study seeks to understand the logics university middle managers use in operationalizing equity and inclusion, specifically, in …

Reputational Regulation, Kishanthi Parella Feb 2018

Reputational Regulation, Kishanthi Parella

Duke Law Journal

When organizations act in ways that offend the public interest, parties seeking to change that behavior traditionally turned to litigation to force these organizations to reform, whether by command or consent. For example, following Brown v. Board of Education , “structural reform litigation” forced large-scale organizations, from school boards to prisons, to change their practices. Similarly, federal prosecutors have used agreements with large corporations to introduce significant structural reforms.

This Article identifies an alternative strategy for organizational change that relies on the indirect reputational effects of litigation. Under this approach, organizational change does not result from court order or parties’ …

Developing And Implementing A Participatory Action Research Assistantship Program At The Community College, Mia Ocean, Kelli Tigertail, James Keller, Kathleen Woods

The Qualitative Report

Despite serving almost half of the U.S. undergraduate students, community colleges and their constituents are consistently marginalized in the research favoring external university experts to conduct research about them and on them. To counteract these top down, disempowering research practices, we piloted a Participatory Action Research Assistantship Program (PARAP). A PARAP is a modified version of a research assistantship program that is grounded in an anti-oppressive, participatory action research practice, creating change on many levels. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of practical and methodological steps to implement a PARAP at a community college including forming …

Evaluating A Dementia Learning Community: Exploratory Study And Research Implications, Rod Sheaff, Ian Sherriff, Catherine Hagan Hennessy

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Access times for, the costs and overload of hospital services are an increasingly salient issue for healthcare managers in many countries. Rising demand for hospital care has been attributed partly to unplanned admissions for older people, and among these partly to the increasing prevalence of dementia. The paper makes a preliminary evaluation of the logic model of a Dementia Learning Community (DLC) intended to reduce unplanned hospital admissions from care homes of people with dementia. A dementia champion in each DLC care home trained other staff in dementia awareness and change management with the aims of changing work routines, …

Legitimacy Theory In Management Accounting Research, Beata Zyznarska-Dworczak Feb 2018

Legitimacy Theory In Management Accounting Research, Beata Zyznarska-Dworczak

European Management Studies

Legitimacy theory helps to understand the organization’s behavior in implementing, developing and communicating its social responsibility policies. The main assumption of legitimacy theory is fulfilling the organization’s social contract, which enables the recognition of its objectives. This in turn requires the adoption of a CSR strategy affecting various areas of activity, including in particular management accounting. The paper draws arguments from literature to identify the role of the legitimacy theory in management accounting research. The article’s thesis is that sustainable management accounting is a valuable tool of legitimacy for a socially responsible company. The paper is structured as follows: after …

Discrimination In The Workplace: Using Psychological Research For Prevention, Carrie A. Langner Feb 2018

Discrimination In The Workplace: Using Psychological Research For Prevention, Carrie A. Langner

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

Bias in the workplace is a problem across the private and public sector. There are a set of tools in social psychology that are useful to other disciplines in preventing and responding to discriminatory behavior. An awareness of these largely unconscious processes and potential interventions for combatting bias can make the difference for an organization that aims to treat applicants and employees fairly. Most employers do not want to discriminate and almost all would like to avoid lawsuits. Knowledge about addressing discrimination is a valuable feature for Cal Poly graduates on the job market. Further, organizations benefit from diversity due …

The Burden Of Ambiguity: Writing At A Cooperative, Avery C. Edenfield Feb 2018

The Burden Of Ambiguity: Writing At A Cooperative, Avery C. Edenfield

English Faculty Publications

Purpose: While many organizations use ambiguity to strategically build a "unified diversity" around an organization's mission, democratically managed organizations need to tread a narrow path between necessary ambiguity (which allows flexibility) and dysfunctional ambiguity (which causes disarray). To illustrate, I report a subset of findings regarding occasions when ambiguous documents had a significant impact on a democratically managed organization.

Methods: I conducted a three-phase study of a democratic cooperative. Using a mixed-methods approach, I sought to uncover the ways technical and professional communication (TPC) concerns like ambiguity and clarity function in a democratic business. In my analysis, I looked for …

Developing A Tool To Assess The Integration Of Sustainability Into Banks: A Case Study On A Bank In Egypt, Arwa Sayyadi

Theses and Dissertations

Banks have an important role to play in the global transition to a more sustainable planet. Not only are they a powerful agent through their control of the money supply, the projects they finance, and clients they lend, but they also have financial, reputational, and legal motivations to adopt more sustainable practices. Based on the importance of banks as sustainability agents and their motivation to become more sustainable, this study focuses on the sustainability integration process in the banking sector and proposes a measurement for this integration. More specifically, this study has three objectives: To create a diagnostic tool or …

In Search Of Missing Time: A Review Of The Study Of Time In Leadership Research, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Mai P. Trinh Feb 2018

In Search Of Missing Time: A Review Of The Study Of Time In Leadership Research, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Mai P. Trinh

Management Faculty Publications

Many studies describe leadership as a dynamic process. However, few examine the passage of time as a critical dimension of that dynamism. This article illuminates this knowledge gap by conducting a systematic review of empirical studies on temporal effects of leadership to identify if and how time has been considered as a factor. After synthesizing key findings from the review, the article discusses methodological implications. We propose that a computational science approach, particularly agent-based modeling, is a fruitful path for future leadership research. This article contributes to leadership scholarship by shedding light on a missing variable (time) and offering …
