From Page To Place: Wordless Picture Books And Field Trips For A 21st Century Curriculum, Margaret Stein
Graduate Student Independent Studies
With the purpose of education being to produce successful world citizens, the educational system must grow with the changing economic and social climate. Operating in a creative and knowledge-based economy, students educated in the 21st Century must be in an environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and recognition of complex patterns in order to thrive in the new economic structures. Proposing a curricular sequence using wordless picture books and field trips to develop and strengthen these skills, this paper focuses on the growth of literacy in all forms as the strongest foundation for creating curious and life-long learners. Utilizing the …

Ripping Off The Band-Aid: Scrutiny Bundling In The Wake Of Social Disapproval, Varkey K. Titus, Owen Parker, A. Erin Bass

Activities that hazard the possibility of increased scrutiny are an unavoidable reality for many firms. While managers may face the need to engage in these activities, there is little research on when managers decide to do so. Existing theoretical perspectives on status quo deviations have not sufficiently addressed how managers order the firm’s essential activities that differ primarily in terms of the scrutiny those activities engender. Drawing from concepts in the accounting and political science literatures, we advance a “scrutiny-bundling” perspective that suggests that firms engage in scrutiny-hazarding action in the wake of social disapproval, assessed in this study via …
Green Dining Proposal, Caroline Jones
Green Dining Proposal, Caroline Jones
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
University of Richmond has slowly but steadily introduced efforts to reduce its campus-wide, local, and national environmental impact, most notably with its commitments to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to divert 75 percent of waste from landfills by 2025. Yet most eateries on campus offer their food and beverages to the hundreds of customers they serve every day only with single-use serve ware, an incredibly expensive practice in terms of cost, energy use, and environmental impacts. This proposal suggests introducing a “for-here” option–serving food and beverages with reusable serve ware–at all eateries on campus that currently do not offer …

21st Century Stewardship: The Role Of Educational Equity In School Sustainability Programs, Marissa Page
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
In light of the increasingly devastating consequences of climate change and the generational inequity involved, there is an urgent need to educate our youth on environmental issues and empower them with opportunities to effect positive change. This research focuses on the problem of inconsistent sustainability programs on school campuses, investigates causal factors and identifies areas for transformation. While many prior studies address the significance of sustainability and the key components of successful school waste reduction, energy conservation and environmental education, this study builds on prior research by considering school sustainability programs through a lens of equity and organizational systems. This …

And, a strategic revolution has awakened throughout healthcare organizations as evidenced based, patient-centered care has received new prominence that requires effective leadership concomitant with the essential attribute of emotional intelligence (Edbor & Singh, 2016; Paren, 2015; & Tyler, 2015).
Alaska Pretrial Project Proposal: Organizational Structure Change To Incorporate A Mental Health Focus, Anna Gabriel
Alaska Pretrial Project Proposal: Organizational Structure Change To Incorporate A Mental Health Focus, Anna Gabriel
Justice
The Pretrial Enforcement Division (PED) for the Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) came into operation on January 1, 2018. PED emerged out of senate bill ninety-one (91) in hopes to reduce incarceration population, and the overall costs of corrections to the state. In response to the new division, a closer look at how this may or may not affect the prison population with behavioral health needs is analyzed. DOC is the number one mental health provider in the state, and often individuals with behavioral health needs are incarcerated longer than those without. With the proposal of assessing all defendants prior …

Good Catch! Using Interdisciplinary Teams And Team Reflexivity To Improve Patient Safety, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Victoria Kennel, Joseph A. Allen, Katherine J. Jones
Psychology Faculty Publications
Interdisciplinary teams play an important role implementing innovations that facilitate the quality and safety of patient care. This article examined the role of reflexivity in team innovation implementation and its association with an objective patient safety outcome, inpatient fall rates (a fall is an unintended downward displacement of a patient’s body to the ground or other object). In this study, we implemented, supported, and evaluated interdisciplinary teams intended to decrease fall risk in 16 small rural hospitals. These hospitals were part of a collaborative that sought to increase knowledge and facilitate reflexivity about fall event reporting and fall risk reduction …
The Effect Of Sublingual Testosterone On Ischemic Pain Sensitivity, Chance Strenth
The Effect Of Sublingual Testosterone On Ischemic Pain Sensitivity, Chance Strenth
Psychology ETDs
Sex differences in pain have been reported for over a half-century with males having higher pain tolerance and lower pain sensitivity than females. Testosterone, a male hormone, is associated with pain perception in humans. However, as of yet no study has directly manipulated a participants’ testosterone to test for causal relationship between testosterone and pain. A double-blind fully-crossed study was conducted using sublingual administration of 0.5 mg testosterone. Twenty female participants completed two 5-hour sessions over a 3-day period. Participants completed an ischemic pain task, behavioral tasks and self-report measures at baseline and at post-administration to explore the effects of …

Investigating Three Approaches Of Using Personality To Predict Competency-Based Performance, Blaine Gaddis, Brandon Ferrell
Investigating Three Approaches Of Using Personality To Predict Competency-Based Performance, Blaine Gaddis, Brandon Ferrell
Personnel Assessment and Decisions
Organizations often use competencies to drive human capital initiatives such as recruitment, selection, training, and promotion. To serve such organizations, practitioners now offer various competency-based research solutions incorporating personality assessments to predict these competencies. Each approach begins by mapping competencies from an organization’s model to scientific models backed by synthetic and content validity evidence to align personality dimensions with each competency. This helps determine which personality dimensions drive performance for each competency. In this paper, we compare scale-based profiles, subscale-based algorithms, and scale-based algorithms to investigate the consistency of scores across methods and how effective each method is in predicting …

Implementation Of A Scripted Education On Comfort Goals To Improve Patient Perception Of Pain Control, Vicki F. Mclean
Implementation Of A Scripted Education On Comfort Goals To Improve Patient Perception Of Pain Control, Vicki F. Mclean
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Pain management is the culmination of physician, nurse, and patient expectations. Successful pain management is impacted by the patient’s perception and expectation of the provided interventions, as well as the perception of the care provider of the patient’s pain. Pain assessment tools have been utilized for decades and still pain control is rated as inadequate. Providing scripted education to the patient on the purpose and utilization of these tools impacts the patient’s perception of pain management. This project implemented the evidence-based practice intervention of education to improve the relationship of comfort goals to pain management. Nurses’ knowledge of pain management …

Thr Erosion Of Civilian Control Of The Military In The United States Today, Richard H. Kohn
Thr Erosion Of Civilian Control Of The Military In The United States Today, Richard H. Kohn
Naval War College Review
In over thirty-five years as a military historian, I have come to have great respect for and trust in American military officers. The United States is truly blessed to have men and women of the highest character leading its youth and safeguarding its security. That fact makes the present subject all the more troubling and unpleasant, whether to write or read about it. However, the subject is crucial to the nation’s security and to its survival as a republic. I am speaking of a tear in the nation’s civil and political fabric; my hope is that by bringing it to …

An Education Intervention To Increase Rounding And Toileting And Reduce Falls In A Hospital Acute Care Of The Elderly (Ace) Unit, Amelia Grayson
Doctoral Projects
Introduction: Falls are the most common accident reported in acute care hospitals and patients who are 65 and older are the most vulnerable. Falls can lead to physical and emotional injury, reduced mobility and functioning, increased length of hospital stay, increased healthcare costs, and admission to long-term care facilities. In 2008, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has eliminated reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of injuries resulting from a fall during hospitalization. Research on fall prevention in adult acute care found multifactorial interventions that address multiple risk factors for falls are the most successful at prevention. This …

Managing Business Process Transformation Projects Using Contextual Hybrid Agile Methodology, John Tu
Dissertations and Theses
Business and business processes never cease to change, and this is especially true with today’s accelerating pace of changing business environment. Executives and project teams in both traditional and Agile organizations across industries have been increasingly motivated to find a flexible project management methodology that can work well and can be readily customized in the context of each of their own organization.
This thesis seeks to first abstract the concept and practices of the Agile methodology by examining the hallmarks of both traditional and Agile project management through comparison. It then constructs a contextualized model by identifying key characteristics of …

Why Russia And China Have Not Formed An Anti-American Alliance, Richard Weitz
Why Russia And China Have Not Formed An Anti-American Alliance, Richard Weitz
Naval War College Review
Notwithstanding predictions since 1991 that Russia and China would form an anti-U.S. bloc, the normalization of their relations has proceeded for reasons mostly unrelated to any joint effort to counterbalance the United States. Russian arms sales do not constitute a military alliance. The two countries’ policies on important issues have been uncoordinated and often conflicting. Finally, despite security agreements signifying the end of their Cold War hostility, nondefense economic ties and societal contacts between Russia and China have remained minimal.

What Do We Mean By “Transformation”?, Andrew L. Ross, Michèle A. Flournoy, Cindy Williams
Naval War College Review
What is “defense transformation” (by whatever name), and how might it affect strategy? What might it cost, and how could its cost affect military forces? What systemic impediments to implementation does it face, and what are its competitors in the budgetary realm? A distinguished panel of the Secretary of the Navy’s Current Strategy Forum held at the Naval War College on 12–13 June 2001 addressed these issues from various perspectives.

Change And Continuity—The U.S. Coast Guard Today, Thomas H. Collins
Naval War College Review
The year 2003 was a watershed for today’s Coast Guard. The Coast Guard’s roles as a military service, as a federal law-enforcement agency, as a regulatory authority, and as a member of the new Department of Homeland Security place it squarely at the center of national initiatives to reduce security risks to our nation.

From Kadesh To Kandahar, Michael Evans
From Kadesh To Kandahar, Michael Evans
Naval War College Review
The problems facing strategists and military professionals in the early twenty-first century have changed dramatically and decisively. Military power and capability have expanded into a network of transnational interconnections. As a result, preparing for armed conflict is no longer only a matter of simply assembling battlefield strength to destroy defined adversaries.
Transforming The Navy, Peter J. Dombrowski, Andrew L. Ross
Transforming The Navy, Peter J. Dombrowski, Andrew L. Ross
Naval War College Review
Judged against the expectations created by President Bush and his defense team, the Navy’s transformation enterprise falls short. However, no compelling strategic rationale for military transformation has yet been articulated. A revolution in military affairs is not required for the maintenance of U.S. military dominance specifically or American primacy generally, or for fighting and winning the global war on terror.
