Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters, Erin M. Boggs Jan 2018

Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters, Erin M. Boggs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) Crews lack an injury surveillance program to collect information on non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. Tactical athletes including: police, military and structural firefighters all have a variety of collection systems in place for injury data collection. The lack of injury data prevents WLFF crews from identifying high-risk environments, implementing injury prevention programs, and improving the overall quality of care on the job. Over the last several decades the recent rise in wildfire occurrences and wildfire suppression costs creates a need for healthy and strong individuals in the field. The cost of firefighter salaries and medical care can be …

Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker Jan 2018

Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Migratory and non-migratory ungulates often coexist in partially migratory populations, but the mechanisms that drive and maintain different migratory behaviors within the same herd are poorly understood. In western North America, increasing numbers of elk (Cervus canadensis) reside on low-elevation winter range year-round. These residents can cause issues associated with crop damage, potential for disease transmission to livestock, and reduced effectiveness of harvest management strategies. Because migrants transfer nutrients, alter carnivore distributions, and structure vegetative communities across seasonal ranges, reductions in migratory behavior raise ecological as well as management-related concerns. This work investigated the factors affecting migratory behavior …

Health Outcomes And Mitigation Strategies, Rajan Bishwakarma Jan 2018

Health Outcomes And Mitigation Strategies, Rajan Bishwakarma

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper examines how exposure to the extreme temperature in-utero effects the health of children later in life using a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey of Nepal. Using a nationally representative sample of 4951 children under the age of 5 years, I employ ordinary least square method to estimate the effect of extreme temperature on height-for-age of the children. The extreme temperature in-utero is an indicator variable, which is equal to 1 if the monthly mean of the daily maximum temperature is greater than 2 standard deviations. Prior work has identified that extreme temperature exposure has a detectable negative contribution in …

An Extensible Mathematical Model Of Glucose Metabolism. Part I: The Basic Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon Model, Basal Conditions And Basic Dynamics, Caleb L. Adams, D. Glenn Lasseigne Jan 2018

An Extensible Mathematical Model Of Glucose Metabolism. Part I: The Basic Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon Model, Basal Conditions And Basic Dynamics, Caleb L. Adams, D. Glenn Lasseigne

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A basic model highlighting the counter-regulatory roles of insulin and glucagon is proposed to start a series of models designed to explore continuous rein control and major aspects of glucose metabolism. The three-by-three dynamical system uses black boxes to model unit processes such as the dependencies of insulin secretion rate and the glucagon secretion rate on blood glucose concentration. The dependency of basal conditions on insulin resistance and any defects in insulin or glucagon secretion are shown. Since over-production of hepatic glucose exists early in the history of diabetes, it is important that mathematical models should account for this effect …

Results: The paper classifies the different modalities of sensing, adds one more nontraditional sense (auto thermoception) to five traditional senses and depicts how general sensory perception can be …

Examining The Credentials Of Food Bloggers And The Online Environment Of Food Blogs, Jessica Coburn Jan 2018

Examining The Credentials Of Food Bloggers And The Online Environment Of Food Blogs, Jessica Coburn

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study evaluated characteristics of food blogs and food bloggers that potentially affect food choices. It was hypothesized that most food bloggers would not have a nutrition-related degree and food blog environments wouldn’t be supportive of health-conscious food choices. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a novel evaluation tool on 187 blogs, out of which 100 blogs met inclusion criteria. Because some blogs had multiple bloggers, two samples were investigated: 111 bloggers (n1 = 111) and 100 food blogs (n2 = 100). Data were gathered from a randomized list of blogs taken from americanfoodbloggers.com. Results showed that 6% of bloggers …

Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Literature Review, Shailynn Shipley Jan 2018

Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Literature Review, Shailynn Shipley

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and domestic violence have devastating effects on the health and well-being of people exposed to abuse. It is known that up to 75% of IPV episodes occur after a woman leaves her abuser, and women who seek help are most likely to suffer aggravated assaults or murder when trying to leave an abusive relationship (Cook & Nash, 2017). IPV screening has been well-studied as evidenced by the prolific research literature, however a synthesis of primary care actions that support the safety and well-being of women experiencing IPV is lacking. This systematic review compares traditional primary care …

Enforcing An Unenforceable Law: The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, Mary Christine Brady Jan 2018

Enforcing An Unenforceable Law: The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, Mary Christine Brady

Emory Law Journal

Congress hastily crafted the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (¿GE labeling law¿ or Act), which it passed in July of 2016, to preempt various state laws that were cropping up around the country seeking to label genetically engineered ingredients (GEs). This Comment anticipates that the Act will face free speech challenges that may find the GE labeling law unconstitutional, especially following recent trends in First Amendment jurisprudence that have been increasingly applying stricter scrutiny upon constitutional review. Due to inconsistent applications of the two governing tests that review compelled commercial speech¿the Central Hudson and Zauderer standards, respectively¿this Comment suggests that …

Agency Legislative History, Jarrod Shobe Jan 2018

Agency Legislative History, Jarrod Shobe

Emory Law Journal

This Article examines agency¿Congress legislative communications, which it terms ¿agency legislative history,¿ and argues that they have important, but previously underexplored, implications for the theories and practice of statutory interpretation. Agency legislative history also sheds new light on the ongoing debate over Chevron¿s domain. Agency legislative history reinforces arguments in favor of deference to agencies by raising questions about courts¿ institutional capacity to effectively uncover congressional deals, and by providing new reasons to believe that agencies may be better statutory interpreters than courts. At the same time, for the many judges skeptical of broad deference but unsure how to limit …

This qualitative research study used a longitudinal design. Findings revealed that there were both strengths and weaknesses to the TOT model. The authors discuss the significance of these findings for policymakers and practitioners worldwide.

Disturbance Of Redox Homeostasis In Down Syndrome: Role Of Iron Dysmetabolism, Eugenio Barone, Andrea Arena, Elizabeth Head, D. Allan Butterfield, Marzia Perluigi Jan 2018

Disturbance Of Redox Homeostasis In Down Syndrome: Role Of Iron Dysmetabolism, Eugenio Barone, Andrea Arena, Elizabeth Head, D. Allan Butterfield, Marzia Perluigi

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic form of intellectual disability that leads in the majority of cases to development of early-onset Alzheimer-like dementia (AD). The neuropathology of DS has several common features with AD including alteration of redox homeostasis, mitochondrial deficits, and inflammation among others. Interestingly, some of the genes encoded by chromosome 21 are responsible of increased oxidative stress (OS) conditions that are further exacerbated by decreased antioxidant defense. Previous studies from our groups showed that accumulation of oxidative damage is an early event in DS neurodegeneration and that oxidative modifications of selected proteins affects the integrity …

Registration Is Fundamental, Brian L. Frye, Nicole E. Pottinger Jan 2018

Registration Is Fundamental, Brian L. Frye, Nicole E. Pottinger

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Under the Copyright Act, copyright owners can file infringement actions only if registration of their copyright claim with the Copyright Office “has been made” or “has been refused.” The United States Supreme Court recently granted certiorari in Fourth Estate v. Wall-Street.com, in order to decide whether registration is “made” when a claimant files a registration application or when the Copyright Office registers the claim.

This article argues that the Court should hold that registration occurs when the Copyright Office registers the claim, in order to ensure that federal courts can benefit from the expertise of the Copyright Office. The Copyright …

1.5/2nd Generation Vietnamese-Americans And Their Health Beliefs And Attitudes, Theresa Dang

Pitzer Senior Theses

Vietnamese immigration is distinct from other Asian/Pacific Islander groups in its context – the bulk of Vietnamese immigration was not of educational, economic, or career opportunity, but a diaspora. After the Fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War, Vietnamese immigrants faced extreme adversities and trauma as they fled to neighboring countries. Understanding the context and history of Vietnamese immigration plays a huge role in the acculturation process, management of health, and ability to navigate institutions among these families. As these immigrant families learn to survive in a new country, they also must face and heal from the emotional, psychological, and …

Can Nox1 Activity Initiate Parkinson's-Like Pathology In An Enteroendocrine Cell Line?, Evan Adler

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Increased attention has been given to the gut lately in a number of conditions, from maintaining health via the use of probiotics to treating Autism Spectrum Disorder. Parkinson's Disease has a history with the gut starting with the Braak hypothesis, in which eminent researcher Heiko Braak observed that the spread of Parkinson's (PD) seemed to occur along either olfactory or enteric neurons prior to reaching the substantia nigra in the midbrain, where the classical disease symptoms become evident. Though this finding was largely ignored at the time, the possibility of a gut origin for PD has received interest lately as …

Whose Sustainability? An Analysis Of A Community Farming Program's Food Justice And Environmental Sustainability Agenda, Sarah Davenport Jan 2018

Whose Sustainability? An Analysis Of A Community Farming Program's Food Justice And Environmental Sustainability Agenda, Sarah Davenport

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As the 1960s Environmental movement has grown, sustainability and justice discourses have come to the fore of the movement. While environmental justice discourse considers the unequal effects of environmental burdens, the language that frames "sustainability" is often socially and politically neutral. This thesis critically examines sustainability initiatives and practices of an urban farming organization in Florida. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in 2017, I explore the extent to which these initiatives incorporate race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic class when working to provide sustainably grown food in diverse communities. I argue that the organization's focus on justice for the environment, rather than for …
