Risk-Enhancing Behaviors Associated With Human Injuries From Bison Encounters At Yellowstone National Park, 2000–2015, Cara Cherry, Kirsten M. Leong, Rick Wallen, Danielle Buttke
United States National Park Service: Publications
Yellowstone National Park is home to the largest bison population on public land in the United States. Although Yellowstone regulations require visitors to remain at least 23 m from bison, since 1980, bison have injured more visitors to Yellowstone than any other animal. We examined a series of bison-related injuries at Yellowstone to evaluate the circumstances of these injuries and to identify common risk-enhancing behaviors that lead to injury. To do this, we analyzed narrative case incident records from law enforcement regarding bison-human encounters in Yellowstone during 2000–2015. Data regarding demographics, preencounter ac- tivities, number of persons involved, type of …

Examining Whooping Crane Breeding Season Foraging Behavior In The Eastern Migratory Population, Hillary L. Thompson, Anik Levac, Megan J. Fitzpatrick
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Agricultural fields may provide an important supplementary foraging habitat for whooping cranes (Grus americana) in the reintroduced Eastern Migratory Population (EMP). We developed methods and gathered preliminary data regarding whooping crane foraging efficiency and habitat use to better understand the use of agricultural fields by breeding cranes. We generated a simple null hypothesis that cranes would spend more time in the habitat type (wetlands vs. agricultural fields) in which they were able to obtain a higher foraging efficiency to maximize food intake, along with several alternative hypotheses pertaining to reasons cranes may prefer wetlands or agricultural fields during …

Osteoarthritis In The Pelvic Limb Of Captive Cranes, Barry K. Hartup, Savannah J. Lauer, Alyson R. Manthei
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
We conducted an epidemiological study of osteoarthritis (OA) among the 15 captive crane species managed at the International Crane Foundation from 1973 to 2016. A retrospective review of 714 medical records found 37 cases of OA in 13 species of cranes and a corresponding period prevalence of OA of 5%. An analysis of the living captive crane flock as of 1 October 2016 (n = 115) found 12 active cases of OA (a point prevalence of 10%), and there was a statistical association between geriatric age classification (i.e., advanced age) and the presence of OA (P < 0.01). The mean age of cranes with OA was 14 years greater than cranes without the disease (P < 0.001). The prevalence estimates of OA from this review were somewhat lower than that from study of museum specimens, but this study similarly identified the tarsal joint as the predominant location of OA lesions in cranes.

Shepherds And Shawls: Making Place In The Western Himalayas, Jennifer Hoover
Shepherds And Shawls: Making Place In The Western Himalayas, Jennifer Hoover
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Cars weave through the flocks of the Gaddi shepherds as they travel from the plains to high altitude deserts, winding along roads lined with shops selling Kullu shawls. In these ways and more, textiles are the face of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Yet dominant discourses position both the shepherds and weavers of the region as the last hold-outs of endangered traditions. These discourses continue colonial-era assumptions of rural artisans as “primitives” in need of either protection from encroaching industrialization or motivation to modernize. Academic writings, popular visual representations, and government policies also reinforce monolithic identities of herders …

Communicating Nutrition Information At The Point Of Purchase: An Eye‐Tracking Study Of Shoppers At Two Grocery Stores In The United States, Mike Bartels, Katherin Tillack, Chung‐Tung Jordan Lin
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Providing nutrition information at the point of purchase is one approach that can be used to help consumers adopt and maintain a healthy diet. Previous research has examined consumer self‐reported notice and use of the information as well as how the design of the information affects its attention and use in a laboratory environ‐ ment using eye‐tracking methodology. This study advances the literature by applying eye‐tracking methodology to explore consumer visual and choice behavior in a real shopping environment, and by recognizing that nutrition information competes with other visual stimuli in the store and consumers are vulnerable to a “limited …

This study was designed to identify risk factors of SSI over time. We identified several surgeries that were significant for SSI and have changed over time. Obesity was a factor of specific interest. Due to potential under-coding this was a predictive factor, however not as significant as initially anticipated. We were able to identify risk factors and specific groups to concentrate further study or changes in treatment to reduce SSI. There were significant findings over time with each specific surgery type. Surprising were the negative correlation of Charlson Comorbidity score. In addition being black was a protective factor for SSI. …

Water availability is a major factor constraining humanity’s ability to meet the future food and energy needs of a growing and increasingly affluent human population. Water plays an important role in the production of energy, including renewable energy sources and the extraction of unconventional fossil fuels that are expected to become important players in future energy security. The emergent competition for water between the food and energy systems is increasingly recognized in the concept of the “food-energy-water nexus.” The nexus between food and water is made even more complex by the globalization of agriculture and rapid growth in food trade, …
Registration Is Fundamental, Nicole Pottinger, Brian L. Frye
Registration Is Fundamental, Nicole Pottinger, Brian L. Frye
IP Theory
Under the Copyright Act, copyright owners can file infringement actions only if registration of their copyright claim with the Copyright Office “has been made” or “has been refused.” The United States Supreme Court recently granted certiorari in Fourth Estate v. Wall-Street.com, in order to decide whether registration is “made” when a claimant files a registration application or when the Copyright Office registers the claim.
This article argues that the Court should hold that registration occurs when the Copyright Office registers the claim, in order to ensure that federal courts can benefit from the expertise of the Copyright Office. The Copyright …
Effect Of Maternal Blood Heavy Metal Level On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Pregnancy Outcomes Among Myanmar Migrants In Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand, Ye Htet Zaw

BACKGROUND: Lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are the priority heavy metals of major public health concern in developing countries. Thailand is a newly industrialized country raising high human workloads of migrant workers form neighbored countries, mostly Myanmar. Exposure to these metals can cause cognitive impairment and depressive disorders through an effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is an important biomarker of pregnancy. Pregnancy outcomes including preeclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight are major burdens for maternal and child health. Although a number of prior studies have examined the effects of heavy metals on pregnancy, there are few studies …

Americans are barraged by an endless flow of ads that claim to remedy medical maladies with prescribed drugs. The commercials depict productive and happy lives, with suggestive associations that human flourishing can be achieved via pharmaceutical intervention. The appeals are accompanied by an exhaustive inventory of potentially negative life-altering side effects. As ads end with this depiction of relational bliss through drug use, viewers hear a fast-paced listing of monotone non-segmented disclaimers, which can range from modest impacts (e.g., slight weight gain) to very serious implications (e.g., suicidal ideations). Research suggests that hearing about the risks of use may increase …

At its core, artificial intelligence (AI) optimizes data. Machine-learning algorithms, one component of AI, are trained using massive datasets curated by humans to predict various aspects of our daily lives. Such predictive intelligence could be a positive force amplified by continued decentralization of the technology. Or, ubiquitous cognition and surveillance could be a disruptive force amplified by the unregulated proliferation of AI technologies. Yet, though we will certainly see more and more AI systems being integrated into every facet of our infrastructures, homes, and bodies, the proliferation of AI technology isn’t the problem. A privacy-security quagmire arises from the interconnectivity …
