Peripheral blood and haematopoiesis in bone marrow and liver tissue were investigated in Bufo bufo during the sexual cycle. A combined touch and imprinting tissue method were applied for the haematopoietic cell isolation. The liver is the primary site of erythropoiesis and partial lymphopoiesis. There was a positive correlation between body mass and liver mass, but it was not significant (P > 0.05). The primary role of yellow bone marrow is the maturation of haematopoietic cells, while red bone marrow is responsible for the production of blood cells. Lipophilic Antioxidants In Edible Weeds From Agricultural Areas, Helena Sircelj, Maja Mikulic Petkovsek, Robert Veberic, Metka Hudina, Ana Slatnar

The present paper reports the contents of individual lipophilic antioxidants in fourteen species of edible common agricultural weeds, typical of agricultural areas such as fields and orchards. Young edible green aboveground parts of weeds were analyzed for their chlorophyll, carotenoid, and tocopherol qualitative profiles and contents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the complete lipophilic antioxidant composition of the edible weeds examined in this study. The results revealed that all examined leafy plant species are good sources of lipophilic antioxidants, the richest source being Urtica dioica (255.64 mg 100 $g^{-1}$ fwt), followed by Cardamine …

Pruning has been seen as a means of improving olive tree productivity. The presumed importance of pruning was described by Columella (born 4 AD), and has persisted in general terms to the present. In this work, the effect of different pruning regimes was assessed from two field trials conducted in Mirandela, NE Portugal, in an olive grove of cv. 'Cobrançosa', rainfed managed. Pepper fruit (Capsicum annuumL.) is one of the best sources of carotenoids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, phenols, and antioxidant activity important in the human diet. The levels of bioactive compounds are variable and may be affected by cultivar, maturity stage, and boron concentration in the soil solution. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with the pepper cultivars Solario, Osho, Odysseo, and Arlequin treated with 5 boron concentrations (0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg B L-1) for 70 days. Isoflavones prevent the incidence of cancer, reduce cardiovascular problems, and decrease menopausal symptoms. In soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc.) seeds, the content is greatly affected by growing conditions. The variations in soy-isoflavone content were investigated by growing 346 Korean wild soybean accessions from natural habitats under the same agroclimatic conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to measure the profiles of six soy-isoflavones, i.e. glycosides (daidzin, glycitin, genistin) and malonyl glycosides (malonyl-daidzin, malonyl-glycitin, and malonyl-genistin). The genetic potential of accessions from Solanum section Lycopersicon (S. lycopersicum L., S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, S. pimpinellifolium L., and S. habrochaites Knaap & Spooner) for breeding tomato taste has been studied in three environments with clonal replicates. The environment clearly affected the accumulation and level of variation of sugars and acids and derived variables through a direct effect. The effect of altitude, shooting period, and tea grade on the catechins and caffeine contents of Turkish black tea was investigated. The experimental factors significantly affected all of the parameters analyzed. Epigallocatechin gallate was the major catechin of black tea (0.719-1.007 g 100 g-1 dm) followed by epigallocatechin (0.627-0.791 g 100 g-1 dm). Additionally, caffeine (1.810-2.175 g 100 g-1 dm), theaflavin (3.201-6.000 μmol g-1), and thearubigin (8.577-12.635 g 100 g-1 dm) contents were determined. Efficiency in fruit trees is connected with flower quantity and quality. Flower abortions occur largely depending on locations and years in apricot varieties that are selective in terms of climate requirements. In this study carried out with varieties having a wide range of chilling requirements in İzmir and Malatya, flower and leaf bud drop rates differed according to varieties and was found low in Malatya. There is no consensus on the properties of an ideal dressing for treating wounds. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of dressings using topically administered bitter melon extract with olive oil, pure olive oil, nitrofurazone, and saline in the healing of ischemic wounds. This study investigates the advantages of two fuzzy linear regression (FLR) models, namely the Tanaka and the Savic and Pedrycz models, over multiple linear regression (MLR) for lentil yield management. In this study, two standard strawberry cultivars, Rubygem and Sabrina, were treated with UV-C (254 nm), hot water (60° C for 10 s), and UV-C + hot water after harvesting and stored in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) at 0 °C and 5 °C. Bacillus species, due to their soil amendment properties, are important members of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). In this study, with the aim to discover potential biofertilizers, 440 Bacillus isolates from different sources were screened qualitatively for phosphate solubilizing and positive isolates were processed for quantitative estimation of solubilized phosphate and organic acid production. Organic acid production was initially detected by pH change of the media, whereas further confirmation and quantitative estimation were done by gas chromatography (GC). Miller) is a xerophytic cactus species widely cultivated in arid and semiarid regions worldwide and used in rehabilitation programs of rangelands in Algeria since 1990. This study analyzed the diversity and functional traits of plant species established in prickly pear plantations growing under arid and semiarid climates. Gamma rays are known to induce random mutations, which are used to enhance the production of biofilms in bacteria. Therefore, to improve the activity of biofilm formation in wild Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (HM6), this bacterial strain was mutated using five doses of gamma irradiation. Sixteen mutants and their wild strain B. amyloliquefaciens (HM6) were tested for biofilm formation under two different (250 and 350 mM) NaCl concentrations. For the first time a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based sensor for tyrosinase is described. This sensor is based on the electropolymerization of scopoletin or o-phenylenediamine in the presence of tyrosinase from mushrooms, which has a high homology to the human enzyme. The template was removed either by treatment with proteinase K or by alkaline treatment. The measuring signal was generated either by measuring the formation of a product by the target enzyme or by evaluation of the permeability of the redox marker ferricyanide. Abstract: Australian education policies aspire to meet the unique needs of all students including those from linguistically diverse backgrounds; however, a first step in achieving this aim is clear identification of such students. Many children from previous migrant families and new arrivals to Australia come from homes where at least one parent speaks a language other than English. This exploratory research utilises survey and interview responses from students and staff in five Queensland state high schools. Background/aim: We aimed to apply a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) test to patients who reported a reaction to banana and showed positivity for banana-specific IgE in Turkey. Materials and methods: Medical data of patients who had been analyzed for banana allergy were reviewed, focusing on banana-specific IgE positivity at the Department of Pediatric Allergy-Immunology at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine between the years 2004 and 2012. Background/aim: This study was designed to develop a Behçet's disease (BD) symptom assessment scale based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms, which deals with understanding symptom experiences in a disease. Materials and methods: The BD Symptom Assessment Scale has two sections: the factors influencing symptoms and the situations influenced by symptoms. Both of these sections were developed through an initial item pool, and expert opinions were consulted during a pilot test performed with 30 patients with BD. Background/aim: A prospective observational study was conducted to determine the relationship between vitamin D de ciency and nosocomial infections among intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Materials and methods: Demographic data, season of admission, vitamin D levels at admission, premorbid lifestyle scores, comorbid conditions, and admission diagnosis were recorded in 306 ICU patients. Infections that developed at least 48 h a er admission to the ICU were the primary outcome, and ICU, hospital, and 1-year mortality were the secondary outcomes. Background/aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate why dementia patients (DPs) are admitted to a palliative care center (PCC) and which factors affect the length of stay (LOS) of DPs in the PCC, and to predict the course of the disease. Background/aim: Galanin is a neuropeptide that is shown to be involved in the regulation of food intake and glucose homeostasis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation of serum galanin levels with anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese and healthy children. Material and methods: The cross-sectional study consisted of 38 obese children (mean age: 11.9 ± 3.0 years) and 30 healthy children (mean age: 11.4 ± 2.0 years).
