The purpose of this paper is to identify how movement affects a student’s academics and behavior within the academic setting. Through research, it was identified that the four main types of movement integration are movement breaks, active lessons, physical activity and physical education. The researchers that focused on the effects on academics used classroom based measures (CBMs) and standardized test to measure the impact of movement. The researchers that focused on the effects of behavior used trained observers and standardized concentration test. Overall, the researchers concluded that all forms of movement integration positively impact academics and behavior. Furthermore, the reduced …

Poverty And Special Education: Disproportionality And Unmet Student Needs, Andrea Crystal Lahti

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, policy concerns have regarded over-representation of minority students in special education as a problem in schools across the United States. While over-representation may be an issue for some racial groups, there is a lurking problem of inequality in the accessibility of education for certain students. The literature reviews various topics related to the impact poverty can have on learning trajectories including intersecting racial inequalities and disproportionality in special education, successful interventions in high-poverty schools, and limits to accessing special education services. The literature highlights the potentially unmet needs of students living in poverty of varying racial and …

Obesity And Eating Disorders Prevention Programs: Effects On Adolescents And Young Adults With Weight Related Conditions, Jean Marie Parsons

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: With implementation of healthy weight education programs throughout schools, questions have been raised whether a preoccupation with obesity prevention contributes to an increase in the incidence of eating disorders. The purpose of this critical review of research is to compare obesity prevention programs and eating disorder prevention programs and possible unintended negative effects on adolescents with weight-related conditions. Theoretical Framework: Neuman Systems Model and Erickson’s Psychosocial Development were used. While Neuman theorizes a human being is a total person characterized by physiological, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, and developmental factors, Erickson focuses on identity versus role confusion at the adolescent age. …

Eating With Your Eyes: What You See May Predict What You Eat., Elizabeth A. Barcia Jan 2018

Eating With Your Eyes: What You See May Predict What You Eat., Elizabeth A. Barcia

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

This study investigated whether regulatory focus and social comparison could predict healthy eating intention. The Theory of Planned Behavior explained eating intention and healthy and unhealthy food photos from social networking sites, along with an androgynous target were used to induce feelings of similarity. Participants were randomly assigned to four surveys. Using a regression, it was found that healthy eating intention was predicted by promotion focus. However, social comparison did not yield significance. We found that although there was a significant relationship between promotion focus and healthy eating intention, it did not matter if the participant felt similar to the …

Branding Factors That Influence Impulse Buying, Talia Fioretti

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

In my thesis paper, I begin by discussing research on branding, such as research on brand personalities, factors that make for a powerful brand, and effects of strong brands. I then discuss research on impulse buying, such as research on internal factors within consumers that can affect impulse buying, external/situational influences that can affect impulse buying, and the effects of product category on impulse buying. I then discuss an original study I ran that explores the relationship between branding and impulse buying. My research suggests that there is indeed a relationship between branding and impulse buying. For instance, the results …

The prevalence of edentulism is common worldwide. While improvements in access to healthcare and dental care are reducing the prevalence rate of edentulism, the rapidly growing number of elderly as a percent of the global population will sustain a need for denture therapy for the foreseeable future. While denture use has positive impacts on the quality of life, their use is associated with some problems and risks. Denture stomatitis, a chronic infection-related inflammatory disorder of the oral mucosa, is extremely common and has been reported to occur in up to two-thirds of denture wearers. Importantly, epidemiology studies have shown edentulism …

Determining The Barriers To Prenatal Care Entry Within The First Trimester By Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Surveys And Questionnaires, Joycelyn Akamune Jan 2018

Determining The Barriers To Prenatal Care Entry Within The First Trimester By Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Surveys And Questionnaires, Joycelyn Akamune

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Prenatal care (PNC) within the first trimester is associated with improved fetal and maternal health outcomes. Improved PNC is necessary to prevent negative birth outcomes such as low birth weight and infant mortality, which have significant impact on birth outcome rates. Improving access to PNC in the first trimester involves removing barriers to care. A brief survey distributed to expectant mothers is a simple way to define these barriers. Many small community health centers do not use surveys to gather patient information. By reaching this population, barriers to PNC can be better understood and mitigated using community resources decreasing …

Dominant Plant Species Shape Soil Bacterial Community In Semiarid Sandy Land Of Northern China, Shaokun Wang, Xiaoan Zuo, Xueyong Zhao, Tala Awada, Yongqing Luo, Yuqiang Li, Hao Qu

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Plant species affect soil bacterial diversity and compositions. However, little is known about the role of dominant plant species in shaping the soil bacterial community during the restoration of sandy grasslands in Horqin Sandy Land, northern China. We established a mesocosm pots experiment to investigate short-term responses of soil bacterial diversity and composition, and the related soil properties in degraded soils without vegetation (bare sand as the control, CK) to restoration with five plant species that dominate across restoration stages: Agriophyllum squarrosum (AS), Artemisia halodendron (AH), Setaria viridis (SV), Chenopodium acuminatum (CA), and Corispermum macrocarpum (CM). We used redundancy analysis …

Imaging Spectroscopic Analysis Of Biochemical Traits For Shrub Species In Great Basin, Usa, Yi Qi, Susan L. Ustin, Nancy F. Glenn

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The biochemical traits of plant canopies are important predictors of photosynthetic capacity and nutrient cycling. However, remote sensing of biochemical traits in shrub species in dryland ecosystems has been limited mainly due to the sparse vegetation cover, manifold shrub structures, and complex light interaction between the land surface and canopy. In order to examine the performance of airborne imaging spectroscopy for retrieving biochemical traits in shrub species, we collected Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer—Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) images and surveyed four foliar biochemical traits (leaf mass per area, water content, nitrogen content and carbon) of sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) and …

Musical Tasks And Energetic Arousal, Hayoung Lim, Angela Watson

Recent Faculty Publications

Background: Music is widely recognized as a motivating stimulus. Investigators have examined the use of music to improve a variety of motivation-related outcomes; however, these studies have focused primarily on passive music listening rather than active participation in musical activities. Objective: To examine the influence of participation in musical tasks and unique participant characteristics on energetic arousal. Methods: We used a one-way Welch’s ANOVA to examine the influence of musical participation (i.e., a non-musical control and four different musical task conditions) upon energetic arousal. In addition, ancillary analyses of participant characteristics including personality, age, gender, sleep, musical training, caffeine, nicotine, …
