Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome In An 18-Year Old Female: Case Report, Karishma Lal, Akash Khetpal, Muhammad Saad Ali Mallick, Ansab Godil, Arsalan Majeed Adam, Zahid Ali Memon
Medical College Documents
We report an unusual case of an 18-year old woman, who presented to Civil Hospital Karachi in May 2016 with complaints of vomiting, abdominal pain, dysphagia, altered bowel habits, loss of appetite and chronic weight loss. On examination, abdomen was found to be soft and non-tender with discomfort on breathing. CT angiogram revealed reduction of aortomesenteric angle and aortomesenteric distance which were both consistent with superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Reduction in angle was thought to be because of weight loss and adipose tissue depletion so patient was started on enteral and parenteral nutritional supplements. Upon seeing little to no improvement, …

Prevalence Of Depression Among Students: Critical Review, Dastan Tareq Faeq
Polytechnic Journal
One of the most prevalent problems of mental health is depression, which is a serious health problem among the student population. Moreover, depression has a significant impact on academic performance, academic satisfaction and academic achievement (Arslan et al., 2009). A study by Wechsler, Lee, Kuo and Lee (2000) reported that students with symptoms of depression achieve lower grades and are less active in the classroom relative to students who do not have these symptoms. The findings show that depression is a serious problem that requires psychological support for the majority of students. So far, however, few investigations have been conducted …

Zombie Religious Institutions, Elizabeth Sepper
Zombie Religious Institutions, Elizabeth Sepper
Northwestern University Law Review
This Article uncovers and names a phenomenon of pressing importance for healthcare policy and religious liberty law: the rise of zombie religious institutions—organizations that have contractual commitments to religious identity but lack actual attachments to churches or associations of religious people. Contracts create religion—sometimes in perpetuity—for institutions that are not, or never have been, religious and for providers who do not share the institution’s religious precepts. This Article details religion’s spread across healthcare through affiliations, mergers, and—most surprisingly—sales of hospitals that continue religious practice after their connection to a church ends. These contracts require hospitals—secular and religious, public and private, …

Global scenarios evidence that contamination due to anthropogenic activities occur at different spatial-temporal scales, being important stressors: eutrophication, due to increased nutrient inputs; and metal pollution, mostly derived from industrial activities. In this study, we investigated ecophysiological and metabolic responses to copper and nutrient excess in the brown macroalga Cystoseira tamariscifolia. Whole plants were incubated in an indoor system under control conditions, two levels of nominal copper (0.5 and 2.0 µM), and two levels of nutrient supply for two weeks. Maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and maximal electron transport rate (ETRmax) increased under copper exposure. Photosynthetic pigments and phenolic compounds (PC) …

Coffee Drinking And Leukocyte Telomere Length: A Meta-Analysis, Bella Kotlyar
Coffee Drinking And Leukocyte Telomere Length: A Meta-Analysis, Bella Kotlyar
Yale Day of Data
Telomeres are long tandem nucleotide repeats responsible for maintaining chromosomal integrity. They shorten with each cell division, serving as markers for cellular aging and replicative ability, and shorter telomere length has been associated with greater risk of various chronic diseases of aging. There is increasing interest in the relationship between telomere length and lifestyle factors, such as components of the diet, that are associated with age-related chronic diseases, like cancer and diabetes.
There is mounting evidence that coffee, one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world, has potential protective effects against chronic disease and mortality. Few studies have …

From Context To Outcomes: A Thriving Model For 4-H Youth Development Programs, Mary E. Arnold
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
The contemporary Extension 4-H program is focused on positive youth development, providing experiences that increase the likelihood of enhanced wellbeing and optimal development for 4-H participants. Despite the longevity, reach, and success of the 4-H program, however, with few notable exceptions, there has been relatively little attention paid to elucidating the underlying program theory and the actions that put the theory into motion. As a result, no one model or framework guides the program uniformly across the 4-H system, resulting in numerous ways of describing and measuring the impact of the 4-H program on young people. This paper proposes a …

BACKGROUND: The human intestine and its microbiota is the most common infection site for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), which affect the well-being of ~ 1.5 billion people worldwide. The complex cross-kingdom interactions are not well understood.
RESULTS: A cross-sectional analysis identified conserved microbial signatures positively or negatively associated with STH infections across Liberia and Indonesia, and longitudinal samples analysis from a double-blind randomized trial showed that the gut microbiota responds to deworming but does not transition closer to the uninfected state. The microbiomes of individuals able to self-clear the infection had more alike microbiome assemblages compared to individuals who remained infected. …

The Legal Regulation On The Use Of Non-Gm(O) Label On Food, Liu Xuxia, Wang Qi
The Legal Regulation On The Use Of Non-Gm(O) Label On Food, Liu Xuxia, Wang Qi
Food and Machinery
Non-GM(O) label is widely used on food in our country. The existence of information asymmetry increase the risk of misuse of non-GM(O) label, while the market mechanism itself can not regulate the misuse. In China, the legislation regulating the non-GM(O) label is not specific, thus misuse of non-GM(O) label was generally not considered to be illegal in judicial decision. Existing research mainly focuses on non-GM(O ) advertising instead of non-GM(O) label. By contrast, there are specific legislation which restrict the scope of food on which the non-GM(O) label can be used in Germany, Japan and the United States. The use of Non-GM(O) …

Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Rationale: Although being out of equilibrium, biomolecules in organisms have the potential to approach isotope equilibrium locally because enzymatic reactions are intrinsically reversible. A rigorous approach that can describe isotope distribution among biomolecules and their apparent deviation from equilibrium state is lacking, however. Methods: Applying the concept of distance matrix in graph theory, we propose that apparent local isotope equilibrium among a subset of biomolecules can be assessed using an apparent fractionation difference (|Δα|) matrix, in which the differences between the observed isotope composition (δ') and the calculated equilibrium fractionation factor (1000lnβ) …

Huisgen’s azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction was employed to synthesize a series of 1H-1,2,3-triazole-tethered uracil-ferrocenyl chalcone conjugates with the aim of evaluating their in vitro anti-proliferative efficacy on human leukemia (CCRF-CEM) and human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-468) cell lines. Cytotoxic evaluation studies identified a number of synthesized conjugates that inhibited the proliferation of leukemia cancer cells by ~70% after 72 h. The selected synthesized conjugates were found to be significantly less cytotoxic against normal kidney cell line (LLC-PK1) when compared with CCRF-CEM cancer cells.
