Consequences Of Attributions For Unfair Healthcare Treatment Among Culturally Diverse Patients, Nathalie Serna Mar 2018

Consequences Of Attributions For Unfair Healthcare Treatment Among Culturally Diverse Patients, Nathalie Serna

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ethnic minority and lower SES populations report less positive healthcare encounters and worse health outcomes as compared to higher SES and mainstream populations. In Chile, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the highest in South America and among the indigenous Mapuche population it has quadrupled over the last decade (Perez-Bravo et al., 2001). Research suggests that Mapuches have been historically discriminated in everyday life as well as in healthcare (Alarcon, et al., 2004). Based on Weiner’s attribution theory of motivation and emotion (1986, 1995, 2006) and guided by Betancourt’s integrative model of culture, psychological factors, and …

The indigenous islanders of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are representing the earliest form of developmental stage, their nutritional assessment and anthropometric comparison with contemporary populations are the main objective of the present paper. In this study we present a cross sectional analysis of anthropometric data of 2010 individuals of 19 different groups. The data were collected by the trained anthropologists of Anthropological Survey of India, following standard techniques and ethical guidelines. It was found that the Indigenous Islanders have small body size as compared to immigrants and counterparts. The prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (CED) was found highest among the …

Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French Mar 2018

Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French

Agricultural Education and Communication

In 2008, Proposition 2 passed, forcing all egg producers in California to provide more room inside of cages to their laying hens. The Humane Society of the United States [HSUS] initiated this battle and won but, less than a decade later decided that still wasn’t enough room for the birds. HSUS is now pushing to have a new measure on the ballot in November 2018 forcing all egg producers in California to produce their eggs cage free.

This project will survey the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus to gauge the campus’s understanding of egg production in California. …

Planning For An Age-Friendly Belmont, Jan Mutchler

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

Belmont is a primarily residential community of around 25,000 residents with a small commercial district. Public transit access to downtown Boston and neighboring Cambridge offers Belmont residents access to services, employment, and recreational activities outside of the town’s boundaries. With 22% of its population age 60 and older, Belmont is expecting to see an increase in the number of older residents in the coming years. Commissioned by the Belmont Council on Aging (COA), this report will serve to help the COA and Town to better understand Belmont’s current assets, potentials, and challenges and to plan for changing community needs.

Drought And Public Necessity: Can A Common-Law “Stick” Increase Flexibility In Western Water Law?, Robin Kundis Craig Mar 2018

Drought And Public Necessity: Can A Common-Law “Stick” Increase Flexibility In Western Water Law?, Robin Kundis Craig

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Drought is a recurring—and likely increasing—challenge to water rights administration in western states under the prior appropriation doctrine, where “first in time” senior rights are often allocated to non-survival uses such as commercial agriculture rather than to drinking water supply for cities. While states and localities facing severe drought have used a variety of voluntary programs to re-allocate water, these programs by their very nature cannot guarantee that water will in fact be redistributed to the uses that best promote public health and community survival.

Using the example of the Brazos River drought of 2010 to 2013, this Article explores …

Associations Between Neighbourhood Characteristics And Depression: A Twin Study., Hannah Cohen-Cline, Shirley A A Beresford, Wendy Elizabeth Barrington, Ross L Matsueda, Jon Wakefield, Glen E Duncan Mar 2018

Associations Between Neighbourhood Characteristics And Depression: A Twin Study., Hannah Cohen-Cline, Shirley A A Beresford, Wendy Elizabeth Barrington, Ross L Matsueda, Jon Wakefield, Glen E Duncan

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: Depression is an important contributor to the global burden of disease. Besides several known individual-level factors that contribute to depression, there is a growing recognition that neighbourhood environment can also profoundly affect mental health. This study assessed associations between three neighbourhood constructs-socioeconomic deprivation, residential instability and income inequality-and depression among adult twin pairs. The twin design is used to examine the association between neighbourhood constructs and depression, controlling for selection factors (ie, genetic and shared environmental factors) that have confounded purported associations.

METHODS: We used multilevel random-intercept Poisson regression among 3738 same-sex twin pairs from a community-based twin registry …

Moraga Commons Skatepark - Phase 2: Enhancing The Experience, Jeffrey Phunmongkol Mar 2018

Moraga Commons Skatepark - Phase 2: Enhancing The Experience, Jeffrey Phunmongkol

Construction Management

Moraga Commons Skatepark is located in the East Bay Area, of Northern California. An affluent small town, the skatepark serves as a great outdoor space where kids can exercise and enjoy. Originally built in 2003, Moraga Skatepark has been my second home ever since I started skateboarding. Myself, along with others, have noticed specific aspects of the skatepark that are poorly designed. In addition, the park has experienced general wear and depreciation from years of use. I wanted to create a potential improvement plan that would include slight skatepark design changes and ultimately addition of park amenities to improve the …

The Effect Of Zn2+ Binding On The Chemistry Of Tm3+ And Eu3+ Chelates, Diana King Mar 2018

The Effect Of Zn2+ Binding On The Chemistry Of Tm3+ And Eu3+ Chelates, Diana King

University Honors Theses

Current contrast agents are Gd3+-based, which successfully enhance MRI images but are limited in detecting certain analytes compared to new agents that operate through a CEST mechanism. In this study, a Eu3+ and Tm3+ chelate were examined as CEST agents for MRI imaging in four concentrations of zinc: 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 equivalents. T1 values were obtained using NMR spectrometry, which were then used to fit the data to obtain CEST spectra for the compounds. The CEST spectra of the Tm3+ chelate had a shift in the amide protons as Zn2+ concentrations …

Challenges Needs And Experiences Of Single Parent Student Mothers In Higher Education, Gina M. Vyskocil Mar 2018

Challenges Needs And Experiences Of Single Parent Student Mothers In Higher Education, Gina M. Vyskocil

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

While the literature addressing the experiences of women in higher education is expanding, the experiences of single mothers in academia remains under-explored, despite single student mothers being the largest and fastest growing student demographic in higher education institutions. The role of single mothers who are pursuing degrees while raising children assumes crucial importance in helping forge means of support that are not government-dependent, as well as enabling single parent student mothers to role model educational pursuits and achievement of degrees as possibilities for dependents. Though college degrees can provide means of financial stability and immense social and professional benefits for …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The privacy policies and practices of six consumer Internet of things (IoT) devices were reviewed and compared. In addition, an empirical verification of the compliance of privacy policies for data collection practices on two voice-activated intelligent assistant devices, namely the Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home devices was performed. The review shows that IoT privacy policies may not be usable from the human-computer interaction perspective because IoT policies are included as part of the manufacturers' general privacy policy (which may include policies unrelated to the device), or the IoT policy requires to read (in addition to the IoT policies) the …

Physical Activity And Annual Medical Outlay In U.S. Colorectal, Breast And Prostate Cancer Survivors, Alice F. Yan, Yang Wang, Alexander V. Ng

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Multiple chronic conditions in cancer survivors are highly prevalent and may increase health care costs for both patients and the health care system. Studies of cancer survivors reveal positive effects of physical activity (PA) on reducing risk of cancer recurrence, other chronic conditions, and secondary cancer. Few nationally representative studies have examined how physical activity levels have affected survivors' annual economic burden in the United States.

Leisure-time physical activity data from the National Health Interview Survey was linked to health care expenditure data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2008–2012). We calculated per-person annual total medical expenditures for identified …

Mechanisms For The Increased Fatigability Of The Lower Limb In People With Type 2 Diabetes, Jonathon Senefeld, Steven B. Magill, April L. Harkins, Alison R. Harmer, Sandra K. Hunter

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Fatiguing exercise is the basis of exercise training and a cornerstone of management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), however, little is known about the fatigability of limb muscles and the involved mechanisms in people with T2D. The purpose was to compare fatigability of knee extensor muscles between people with T2D and controls without diabetes and determine the neural and muscular mechanisms for a dynamic fatiguing task. Seventeen people with T2D (10 men, 7 women: 59.6{plus minus}9.0 years) and 21 age-, BMI- and physical activity-matched controls (11 men, 10 women: 59.5{plus minus}9.6 years) performed 120 high-velocity concentric contractions (1 contraction/3 …

Exchangeable Zinc Pool Size At Birth In Pakistani Small For Gestational Age And Appropriate For Gestational Age Infants Do Not Differ But Are Lower Than In Us Infants, Shabina Ariff, Nancy F. Krebs, Jamie E. Westcott, K Michael Hambidge, Leland V. Miller, Arjumand Rizvi, Sajid Bashir Soofi, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Objectives: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants are more susceptible to infectious morbidity and growth faltering compared to their appropriate for gestational age (AGA) counterparts. Zinc supplementation of SGA infants may be beneficial but the underlying susceptibility to zinc deficiency of SGA infants has not been examined.
Methods: In a community-based, observational, longitudinal study in a peri-urban settlement of Karachi, Pakistan, we compared the size of the exchangeable zinc pools (EZPs) in term SGA and AGA infants at birth and at 6 months of age, hypothesizing that the EZP would be lower in the SGA group. To measure EZP size, …

Crossover Feeding Test Of A New Milk Mixture For Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca) Cubs, Zhihe Zhang, Rong Hou, Jingchao Lan, Hairui Wang, Tatsuko Nakao, Zenta Takatsu, Toyokazu Kobayashi, Hiroshi Koie, Hiroshi Kamata, Kiichi Kanayama, Toshi Watanabe

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A milk substitute developed in 1988 (OM) has been used to feed giant panda cubs, but its contents do not match those of panda breast milk. OM contains 10% more protein than the breast milk, and so a novel milk substitute (NM) was developed based on breast milk data. NM has the following nutrition: protein, 38%; fat, 40%; carbohydrates, 12% (containing lactose, 7%); ash, 6%; and moisture, 3%; and it also contains lactoferrin, nucleotides, oligosaccharides and docosahexaenoic acid. In order to ensure that NM is safe before it is fed to premature newborns, a plan was made to subject twin …
