Farm To Liberation: Towards Feminist Food Justice, Elisabeth Spector
Farm To Liberation: Towards Feminist Food Justice, Elisabeth Spector
Honors Theses
Women are one of the many vulnerable populations experiencing the detrimental effects of human-induced climate change, and our current system of food production is one of the largest contributors to this global problem. Not only do modern methods of food production contribute significantly to climate change, but they devalue women’s knowledge and strip away their opportunities. A number of communities and individuals have begun to work against this system and work towards food justice through small-scale farming and growing their own food. Through the use of ecofeminist scholarship and original interviews, this project examines the problems within our current food …

Health Supplement Use And Related Adverse Events In Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A Cross-Study, Naseem Mohammed Rafee Abdulla
Philosophy Dissertations
Health supplement products contain ingredients of more than a thousand chemicals. Several of these chemicals may adversely affect human health. Previous studies have found that consumers are generally unaware of the risks of health supplements and their associated adverse events. In addition, they are unaware of the appropriate reporting process to relevant authorities should adverse events occur. Moreover, many healthcare professionals have inadequate knowledge, attitude, and practice in health supplement consumption-related adverse events and their reporting. The purpose of this research was to measure the health supplement consumption in the population of Dubai, the adverse events thereof, and the level …

Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Brian Fink, Alexandra Schluntz
Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Brian Fink, Alexandra Schluntz
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Our intent in this Article is not to delineate foods that are local or not local, nor is it to lionize one agricultural production method over another. Rather, we hope to build on the literature that for many decades has documented how local communities have emerged as influential actors on the American food system through establishing control over local supply chains often alongside national and global supply chains. We begin with Part I, which explores how some food-system scholars have conceptualized these democratic changes occurring. We look to Thomas Lyson’s concept of civic agriculture, which attempts to move corporation-oriented communities …

How Much Do We Spend? Creating Historical Estimates Of Public Health Expenditures In The United States At The Federal, State, And Local Levels, Jonathon P. Leider, Beth Resnick, David Bishai, F. Douglas Scutchfield
Health Management and Policy Faculty Publications
The United States has a complex governmental public health system. Agencies at the federal, state, and local levels all contribute to the protection and promotion of the population's health. Whether the modern public health system is well situated to deliver essential public health services, however, is an open question. In some part, its readiness relates to how agencies are funded and to what ends. A mix of Federalism, home rule, and happenstance has contributed to a siloed funding system in the United States, whereby health agencies are given particular dollars for particular tasks. Little discretionary funding remains. Furthermore, tracking how …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background & Objective: Leptin facilitates onset of puberty by impact on hypothalamic Kisspeptin, gonadotropin releasing hormone, follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormone. The link of peripheral Leptin-Kisspeptin in regulating the ovarian and endometrial tissue in relation to adiposity is unknown. Therefore, we wanted to identify Kisspeptin-Leptin association with body mass index (BMI) and success of assisted reproductive treatments (ART) in infertile females.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried from August 2014 till May 2016 after receiving ethical approval at Australian Concept Infertility Medical Centre, and Aga Khan University. The study group comprised of females with an age range …
The Relationship Between Site Contamination And Native Plant Success In Butte, Mt: Implications For Future Restoration, Jared Trilling
The Relationship Between Site Contamination And Native Plant Success In Butte, Mt: Implications For Future Restoration, Jared Trilling
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Interest in ecological restoration of mining impacted areas, as opposed to traditional reclamation practices, has been increasing in recent years. Holistic ecological restoration is preferable to traditional reclamation practices as it provides better ecological function, biodiversity, and human enjoyment. However, legacy effects of mining, such as metals contamination and poor growing substrates, has hampered restoration efforts and further, there is little research on primary succession of these novel ecosystems. There is also scant information on many native plant species responses to contamination.
This study focuses on developing plant-contaminant relationships to guide restoration planting decisions. We look at Butte, MT, an …

An Evaluation Of Induction Heating In Healthcare Food Industry, Barrett Alexander Hampton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis addresses the problem healthcare facilities are having in maintaining proper food temperatures while transporting meals to patients after food has left the kitchen area. Induction heat has been a known method for generating heat for many years. The commercial food industry currently uses this technology, which is beginning to appear in the residential sector as well because of developments made by manufacturers. This study focuses on the top commercial brand models of induction heaters and the supporting materials currently used to create heat sources to maintain food temperatures in hospitals and long term care facilities.

CUP Undergraduate Research
Evidence has been shown that anger can affect one’s life in various ways that can cause distress for an individual. It is important for individuals who struggle with these issues to learn how to cope with them in a healthy and motivating way. Exercise has been shown to be an effective coping mechanism for many individuals struggling with mental and physical illnesses, and the use of exercise as a possible way to manage anger could be a positive intervention for those with anger and aggressive tendencies. The literature for exercise being actively used as an intervention for anger and aggression …

Identifying The Risk Factors For Food Insecurity In The United States, Destiny Leitz
Identifying The Risk Factors For Food Insecurity In The United States, Destiny Leitz
Major Themes in Economics
Food insecurity is widespread in America and has both humanitarian and economic consequences. The purpose of this study is to identify the risk factors associated with food insecurity so that state officials can tailor assistance programs to benefit those most in need. A logistic regression model is employed using data from the 2016 Food Security Supplement to the Current Population Survey. The results provide evidence that food insecurity is negatively associated with income, education, home ownership, and age; it is positively associated with unemployment, disability, and a state’s tax burden. Other influences include ethnicity, citizenship status, and participation in nutrition …
