Exploring The Relationship Between Family Social Capital And Utilization Of Well Child Preventative Health Care Services, Kristi K. Westphaln
Exploring The Relationship Between Family Social Capital And Utilization Of Well Child Preventative Health Care Services, Kristi K. Westphaln
Dissertations
Background: Passage of the Affordable Health Care Act of 2010 increased insurance coverage for children, however possession of health care insurance doesn’t always equate to effective use of health care services. Misuse and underutilization of health care homes is associated with higher costs, fragmentation of health care, and poor health outcomes across the lifespan. Along with reliance upon the health care system, child health and well-being are dependent upon social factors such as interactions with caregivers and communities. Family social capital (FSC) addresses the interrelated nature of child health and family interaction while also promoting family cohesion as currency …
Testing The Potential Of Novel Grain Crop Cultivation In Rural Malawi During The Dry Season Through Irrigation And Soil Modification, Jessica Truman
Testing The Potential Of Novel Grain Crop Cultivation In Rural Malawi During The Dry Season Through Irrigation And Soil Modification, Jessica Truman
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research project studied the germination and growth rates of oat and quinoa crops in Mtalimanja, Malawi. This project was part of a larger effort by General Mills and Brigham Young University researchers to increase the diversity and nutrient content of crops in impoverished countries worldwide. It was conducted from May to August 2017 during Malawi’s dry season. Tetraploid oats and quinoa, both modified to increase the protein content of harvested grains, were planted under three different soil conditions: unamended soil, soil mixed with composted chicken litter, and soil with surface-applied granular fertilizer. The research plots were watered daily except …

A Multi-Ingredient Dietary Supplement To Improve Growth And Development Of Small For Gestational Age Infants: Concept-Testing Using Newborn Pigs, Taisiya Yakimkova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Approximately 10% of all neonates are born small for gestational age (SGA) and current feeding approaches increase adiposity and the risk of developing metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes. This study determined if supplementing formula with a combination of leucine, medium chain triglyceride oil, and krill oil would promote gain of lean body mass using newborn SGA term pigs as a model for SGA infants. At birth, SGA pigs have relatively smaller livers and spleens (g/kg) than appropriate for gestational age (AGA) pigs and have higher serum values for alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase. Newborn SGA pigs …

Small‐quantity lipid‐based nutrient supplements (SQ‐LNS) have been studied in efficacy and effectiveness trials, but little is known about how parents perceive the products and their effects. In a randomised trial in Ghana, efficacy of SQ‐LNS provided to women during pregnancy and the first 6 months postpartum and to their children from 6 to 18 months of age was assessed by comparison with iron‐folic acid (IFA) capsules and multiple micronutrient (MMN) capsules provided to women. In a follow‐up study conducted when the index children from the original trial were between 4 and 6 years of age, we used survey‐based methods to …

Seasonal Shifts In C3 And C4 Resource Use By A Small Mammal Community Under Changing Precipitation Regimes, Alaina Dianne Pershall
Seasonal Shifts In C3 And C4 Resource Use By A Small Mammal Community Under Changing Precipitation Regimes, Alaina Dianne Pershall
Biology ETDs
In light of climate change and projections of increasing temperatures and aridity in the North American southwest, it is essential to understand how consumer populations will respond to changes in the resource landscape. Rainfall varies in timing and intensity and therefore the timing, proportion, phenology, and abundance of C3 and C4 plant resources vary seasonally and annually. Here we examine rodent resource use in the Chihuahuan desert and focus on two distinct precipitation pulses in this system, where spring C3 plants increase production in response to winter rains and C4 plants respond to summer monsoons. We …

Understanding implementation of interventions is critical to illuminate if, how, and why the interventions achieve impact. Alive & Thrive integrated a nutrition intervention into an existing maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH) programme in Bangladesh, documenting improvements in women's micronutrient supplement intake and dietary diversity. Here, we examined how well the nutrition intervention was implemented and which elements of implementation explained intervention impact. Survey data were collected in 2015 and 2016 from frontline health workers (FLW) and households in areas randomized to nutrition‐focused MNCH (intensified interpersonal counselling, community mobilization, distribution of free micronutrient supplements, and weight‐gain monitoring) or standard MNCH …
Use Of Unpalatable Forages By Ruminants: The Influence Of Experience With The Biophysical And Social Environment, Roberto A. Distel, Juan J. Villalba
Use Of Unpalatable Forages By Ruminants: The Influence Of Experience With The Biophysical And Social Environment, Roberto A. Distel, Juan J. Villalba
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Unpalatable forage resources (low nutrient density, potentially toxic metabolites) are widespread and represent a challenge for ruminant nutrition, health, and welfare. Our objective was to synthesize the role of biophysical and social experience on the use of unpalatable forages by ruminants, and highlight derived behavioural solutions for the well-being of soils, plants, and animals. Environmental experiences early in life modulate gene expression and promote learning, which alters morpho-physiological and psychological mechanisms that modify behavioural responses and change food and habitat selection. In this process, ruminants can become better adapted to the habitat where they are reared. Moreover, experiential learning provides …
Dying With Dignity: Where Is The Compassion In Compassionate Release Programs?, Kendra A. Hollern
Dying With Dignity: Where Is The Compassion In Compassionate Release Programs?, Kendra A. Hollern
International Journal on Responsibility
The prison population in the United States is on the rise. The fastest growing population in prisons are those who could be considered elderly. With the graying of our prison population comes many diseases of aging that will wreak havoc not just on the inmates, but on the costs of incarceration. Prison inmates cannot acquire their own medical care; it is the responsibility of society and hence the prison system itself. If the prisons cannot adequately care for terminally ill or elderly inmates then compassionate release should be considered. Compassionate Release Programs are designed to allow those inmates who are …

The Study Of Moringa Oleifera Under Mars Lighting Conditions, Deanna Demattio
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Agriculture in enclosed and buried structures on Mars will enable astronauts to conduct extended surface exploration missions. We evaluated a deep-water culture indoor hydroponics system to grow Moringa Oleifera, a nutrient- and antioxidant-rich plant with leaves containing the complete set of amino acids necessary for human nutrition. The lighting intensity was decreased to 590 W/m2 in a twelve hour on/off cycle, in normal atmosphere. This simulates an ambient light collection and reflection system on Mars illuminating an insulated, pressurized underground chamber for agriculture. All plants (N = 32) were harvested over a 9 mo. period at regular intervals when plant …

Using Δ13c, Δ15n, And Δ2h To Better Understand The Ecology Of Green Sea Turtles, Laura Pagès Barceló
Biology ETDs
Many green sea turtle populations are slowly recuperating from a recent severe decline due to anthropogenic factors including human consumption and mortality related to the fishing industry. Despite being charismatic animals that have been extensively studied, there is still a limited understanding of their feeding strategies and diet plasticity. This research explores the use of hydrogen isotopes in marine ecosystems to better understand green sea turtle ecology. This study is presented in two chapters: I first examined the trophic discrimination factor (D2HNET) for hydrogen isotope (d2H) as a tool to correct hydrogen isotope data …
Perceptions And Use Of Nonnutritive Sweeteners Among College Students Based Upon Athletic Status, Gender, And Academic Major, Madison B. Heydinger
Perceptions And Use Of Nonnutritive Sweeteners Among College Students Based Upon Athletic Status, Gender, And Academic Major, Madison B. Heydinger
Honors College Theses
Nonnutritive sweeteners, which include sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, and stevia may positively impact health of individuals by helping to reduce Caloric and added sugar intake. Athletes may consider these factors when attempting to improve performance and, as such, may benefit from their use. However, no one has examined sources of nutrition knowledge and perceptions as well as use of nonnutritive sweeteners in college students based upon athletic status, gender, and whether students are studying a health or non-health related major. The objective of this study was to compare college students’ sources of nutrition knowledge to their perceptions and consumption of nonnutritive …

Thermoregulatory Adaptations Following Sprint Interval Training, Jonathan E. Wingo, Charlie P. Katica, Svetlana Nepocatych, Andrew T. Del Pozzi, Greg A. Ryan
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Traditional endurance training typically involves weeks of long-duration (60–90 min) exercise performed at a moderate to vigorous intensity. An alternative paradigm, sprint interval training, is characterized by multiple bouts of short-duration, high-intensity exercise. Similar fitness benefits from the two paradigms have been demonstrated, but whether sprint interval training—like traditional endurance training—induces heat acclimation remains unclear.
Purpose
To test the hypothesis that sprint interval training performed over six sessions results in measureable thermoregulatory and cardiovascular adaptations consistent with heat acclimation.
Methods
Seven untrained men [mean ± SD, 13 ± 5% body fat, 22 ± 3 y, 3.1 ± 0.3 L/min peak …

Recent analyses have suggested a strong heritable component to circulating fatty acid (FA) levels; however, only a limited number of genes have been identified which associate with FA levels. In order to expand upon a previous genome wide association study done on participants in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort and FA levels, we used data from 2,400 of these individuals for whom red blood cell FA profiles, dietary information and genotypes are available, and then conducted a genome-wide evaluation of potential genetic variants associated with 22 FAs and 15 FA ratios, after adjusting for relevant dietary covariates. Our analysis …

Association Between Food Shopping Motivators And The Home Food Environment, Abiodun Atoloye
Student Research Symposium
Objective: To examine whether the home food environment (HFE) is related to food shopping motivating factors. Method: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants were interviewed about their HFE, factors motivating them while shopping, and food security status, using Perceived Nutrition Environment Measure Survey and 6-item US Household Food Security Survey questionnaires. Composite home food environment scores were derived by summing availability and accessibility to healthy food and deducting unhealthy access and availability. Analysis included multiple linear regression models. Results: Being motivated by nutrition and food security were positively associated with HFE (ß= 4.70, p= 0.03 and ß= 1.44, p= 0.06 respectively). …
Climate And Soil Nutrients Jointly Determine The Strength Of Density-Dependent Interactions In An Old-Growth Temperate Forest, Sara Germain
Climate And Soil Nutrients Jointly Determine The Strength Of Density-Dependent Interactions In An Old-Growth Temperate Forest, Sara Germain
Student Research Symposium
A distinct challenge facing ecologists is to understand individual and interactive effects of climate, edaphic characteristics, and biotic relationships on forest ecosystems in order to anticipate and adapt to environmental change. Forest demography is influenced by many ecological processes, including gap-creating to stand-replacing disturbances, pest and pathogen attack, herbivory, shading and crowding, resource competition, heavy metal toxicity, and direct climate impacts. However, a comprehensive assessment of forest demographic responses to these ecological processes can be difficult to accomplish, as seasonal and inter-annual climate variability can interact with biotic and edaphic characteristics to impact individual tree mortality, recruitment, and growth – …
Linear Enamel Hypoplasia And Its Relation To Socioeconomic Class In The 19th Century United States, Amanda Cook
Linear Enamel Hypoplasia And Its Relation To Socioeconomic Class In The 19th Century United States, Amanda Cook
Student Research Symposium
Linear hypoplasia of the dental enamel has long been used as an indicator of physical stress during the tooth year of formation. Enamel hypoplasia present in adult teeth can indicate that the individual experienced growth disturbances during childhood to late adolescence. Through the use of human remains of known origin, age, sex, and socioeconomic background, one can compare childhood stressors according to difference of demographic grouping. This study examines the frequencies of growth disruptions among ethnic and socioeconomic groups of the United States throughout the 20th century. If there are differences in frequencies, do we see this difference increase or …
Exploring Standardized Nursing Languages: Moving Toward A Faith Community Nursing Intervention, Deborah J. Ziebarth
Exploring Standardized Nursing Languages: Moving Toward A Faith Community Nursing Intervention, Deborah J. Ziebarth
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
There are many benefits when a specialty is able to translate nursing interventions into a standardized language. One of the benefits is that nurses from different specialties, geographic areas, or countries are able to understand terminologies and concepts. The aim of this paper is to examine three standardized nursing languages and their use in describing faith community nursing through an integrative literature review.
General descriptions, recognitions, populations, translations, reliability/validation/utility, and components of the Omaha System, the Nursing Intervention Classification, and the International Classification for Nursing Practice were presented. The author did not find literature to support the use of one …
