ETSU Faculty Works

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a recovery supplement compared with a placebo on muscle morphology in trained weightlifters. Vastus lateralis and muscle fiber cross sectional area of type I and type II fibers were compared between groups using a series of 2 × 2 (group × time) repeated measure ANOVAs. Both groups on average improved cross-sectional area of the vastus lateralis, type I and type II muscle fibers from pre-to-post but individual response varied within both groups. Greater magnitude of changes in type I and type II muscle fibers were observed for the placebo …

Management of immunity is crucial for survival in all living organisms. While there is a large amount of research for established model organisms, such as the mouse model, much less is known about reptiles. When compared to immunity in mammals, we discover many differences such as susceptibility to certain pathogens, alteration of immune processes due to environmental temperature, the total absence of certain lymphoid organs contained in mammals, among many others. Despite this, the reptile has shown in many studies that they are worthy systems to study immunity in an evolutionary perspective and recent studies may show that they may …

Development Of A Pain Management Life History Calendar, Jennifer Hehl

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a computerized pain management life history calendar (PMLHC) for use with older adults with osteoarthritis. A two-phase, descriptive research design was used to test the instrument for clinical and research applications. In Phase 1 focus groups, providers (N = 10) shared their thoughts of a mockup PMLHC output. During Phase 2, community dwelling older adults (N = 24) self-administered a PMLHC and were interviewed. An iterative process was used to refine the instrument using feedback from participants and researcher observations.

Bridging Civic Engagement To Civic Responsibility Through Short-Term, International Service-Learning Experiences: A Qualitative Analysis Of Student Reflections, Stephanie Malinenko, Justine Tutuska, Lynn Matthews

eJournal of Public Affairs

Written reflection is a tool commonly used by faculty to assess student learning in service-learning courses, which are frequently offered as short-term international experiences. This article discusses a qualitative analysis of students’ written reflections on a short-term, international service-learning project that was conducted to determine whether undergraduate students bridged their engagement to the development of civic or social responsibility. Results of the analysis revealed that students demonstrated nominal progress toward civic responsibility when not specifically prompted by assignments. Multiple themes emerged from the analysis related to students’ goals, challenges, and lessons learned. Based on the findings, the authors recommend that …

Brain Connectivity Analysis Of Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Participants Based On The Cortical Surface Eeg Data, Md Sultan Mahmud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hearing is an important sensory function of human communication and alerts people of dangerous conditions by detecting the emergency auditory alarm, sirens. We localized the source of EEG data (Hearing EEG data) into the cortical surface by solving the inverse problem and extracted the time series data from the 68 regions of Deskin-Killiany (DK) atlas. By using Granger Causality and Phase Transfer Entropy, we analyzed the brain connectivity of people experiencing normal hearing (NH) and hearing loss (HL). These results showed that NH and HL listeners’ connectivity levels are not the same. Moreover, we investigated which connectivities of the human …

College Student Food Insecurity And Awareness And Use Of Supports: Recent Findings From A Survey Of Students At A Mid-Sized State Comprehensive University In Kansas, Brett Zollinger, Shala Mills, Emily Brandt, Wendy Rohleder-Sook

eJournal of Public Affairs

Recognition of food insecurity among college students in the U.S. is growing. With college costs outpacing inflation for many years now, to what extent do students at "affordable" public-supported state universities experience difficulty affording food throughout the academic year? This article highlights the level of food insecurity among students enrolled in on-campus courses at Fort Hays State University. A two-wave, self-administered mail survey found that 34% of on-campus students experienced food insecurity in the previous year, and those who were food insecure were much more likely to use local food supports, including a campus food pantry. Current combined household income …

The Pivotal Role That Race Plays In Medical Research: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, Kristin X. Wong Apr 2018

The Pivotal Role That Race Plays In Medical Research: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, Kristin X. Wong

Young Historians Conference

This research attempts to answer the question, "To what extent was race or racial bias a factor in the conception and execution of the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male?" The goal is to reevaluate the degree to which the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (TSS) was driven by the racial bias in the face of modern counter-narratives. This has been done by examining events such as the Oslo Study and the Rosenwald Demonstration Project, organizations such as the Public Health Service and Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and primary and secondary sources including interviews, a collection of …

Galen: The Philosophical Physician, Chloe Sellers Apr 2018

Galen: The Philosophical Physician, Chloe Sellers

Young Historians Conference

Analyzing the works of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, this paper reveals the specific influences each of the three had upon Galen’s medical practice, asserting that the influence of philosophy was ultimately responsible for distinguishing Galen from his contemporaries. Drawing from various primary sources, including Plato’s “The Apology,” Timaeus and The Republic, as well as Aristotle’s Physics, and comparing them to Galen’s works, “The Art of Medicine” and “A Method of Medicine to Glaucon,” numerous similarities are revealed between the works of Galen and those of the philosophical trio. By evaluating these many connections among the works, as well as using …

"Loving Mean:" How Systemic Racism Produces Dependence On Homeopathy In Toni Morrison’S Home, Victoria Tkacikova

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

This paper will trace how homeopathy operates along the color line of the 1950s and 1960s among African American communities. I will chronicle observations about these communities that produce distrust of modern medicine through Toni Morrison’s Home. Specifically, I will provide background of medical maltreatment through Harriet Washington’s Medical Apartheid, which maps the medical experimentation of African Americans throughout United States history. Then, I will focus on women who treat Cee in Home, who rely on homeopathy and condemn hospitals and drug therapy. I will define Morrison’s term, “loving mean,” and how this type of language operates in …

Biblical Concepts Of Restoration As A Foundation For Lifestyle Change, Lillian Tryon, D.N.P. Apr 2018

Biblical Concepts Of Restoration As A Foundation For Lifestyle Change, Lillian Tryon, D.N.P.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The Bible is filled with rich images of healing and restoration—it is a consistent and persistent theme in both the Old and New Testaments. Examples from Genesis, the Law of God, the Sanctuary, the story of Daniel, the New Covenant, the Gospels, Paul’s writings, and the book of Revelation are provided. This understanding of restoration and God’s role as the Master Restorer stands in sharp contrast to many historical and contemporary perspectives. It sets lifestyle change into a context and is fundamental to developing a wholistic and comprehensive approach to lifestyle medicine. One significant role of an advanced practice nurse …

The Meal Gap: A Food Activist Curriculum, Kameshia L. Shepherd

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The Meal Gap: A Food Activist Curriculum is a series of fifty-four lessons for fourth grade students that introduces them to the topic of food insecurity. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations initiated the World Food Summit in 1996 to discuss and call attention to the “widespread undernutrition and growing concern about the capacity of agriculture to meet future food needs” (Food and Agriculture Organization, n.d.). The June 2006 Policy Brief of the FAO reaffirmed the 1996 definition of food security, which states that “Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and …

Irvin, Stella Aslibekyan, Anh Do, Degui Zhi, Bertha Hidalgo, Steven A. Claas, Vinodh Srinivasasainagendra, Steve Horvath, Hemant K. Tiwari, Devin M. Absher, Donna K. Arnett

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: Recently, epigenetic age acceleration-or older epigenetic age in comparison to chronological age-has been robustly associated with mortality and various morbidities. However, accelerated epigenetic aging has not been widely investigated in relation to inflammatory or metabolic markers, including postprandial lipids.

Methods: We estimated measures of epigenetic age acceleration in 830 Caucasian participants from the Genetics Of Lipid Lowering Drugs and diet Network (GOLDN) considering two epigenetic age calculations based on differing sets of 5′-Cytosine-phosphate-guanine-3′ genomic site, derived from the Horvath and Hannum DNA methylation age calculators, respectively. GOLDN participants underwent a standardized high-fat meal challenge after fasting for at least …

The influence of short wavelength UV-C irradiation at 254 nm on microbial inactivation, anthocyanins stability, ascorbic acid, and cytotoxicity of formulated cranberry flavored water was studied. Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 13311 were inactivated by more than 5 log10 at UV-C fluence of 21 mJ cm−2. At UV-C fluence of 40 mJ cm−2 the content of ascorbic acid was 82% of that in the untreated beverage. The concentrations of the anthocyanins (Cy3Ar, Cy3Ga, Pe3Ar, and Pe3Ga) were not significantly affected at the same treatment level. Cytotoxicity evaluation of the irradiated beverage on normal colon (CCD-18Co), …
