"I Can See!": A Health Promotion Project To Improve Quality Of Life In Jamaican Communities, Gabriella Iadevaia
Academic Festival
Sacred Heart University’s nursing students of the undergraduate and graduate level, along with the University’s faculty and community healthcare providers travel to Kingston, Jamaica annually to provide medical care to impoverished populations. During this one-week clinical experience, a health promotion project that students focus on is testing the population for hyperopia, dispensing reading glasses, and observing the conditions that may be leading to various visual conditions in the Caribbean. As the project began two years ago with much success, plans for expansion to improve visual impairments in the population served include early interventions for cataract prevention, continual dispensing of reading …

The purpose of this study is to examine ways to increase physical fitness activity in overweight and obese college students.
The study seeks to test the effectiveness of health campaign messages that include visuals of overweight and obese students engaged in physical activity. It is hypothesized that the inclusion of weight diverse students engaged in activity will decrease both obesity public stigma and self-stigma. Moreover, the researchers hypothesize that the inclusion of efficacy statements will increase overweight and obese students’ behavioral intention to engage in physical fitness activities at the campus recreation center.

The Ecology Of Nest Cavity Use By Arboreal Ants In The Brazilian Cerrado: Resource Availability, Nest Modification, And Trophic Interactions, Galen Priest
Dissertations
Arboreal ants in the Brazilian Cerrado rely on cavities in living trees as nest sites. These cavities are created by a community of, wood-boring beetles, which act as ecosystem engineers. Despite the importance of these cavities as a resource, little is known about their natural abundance and heterogeneity, how ants use and modify them as nest sites, and how this interaction between cavities and their ant occupants influences trophic interactions on cerrado trees. Here I use natural history observations and manipulative experiments to address these questions. In the first chapter I quantified the occurrence, heterogeneity, and use of beetle-created cavities …

A Right To Universal Health Coverage In Resource-Constrained Nations? Towards A Blueprint For Better Health Outcomes, Uchechukwu Ngwaba
A Right To Universal Health Coverage In Resource-Constrained Nations? Towards A Blueprint For Better Health Outcomes, Uchechukwu Ngwaba
The Transnational Human Rights Review
Universal health coverage, as conceived by the World Health Organization (WHO) and adopted in the programmatic framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is a clarion call for states to strengthen their health financing systems to avoid catastrophic and impoverishing health spending. However, the framing of the goals of universal health coverage fails to take account of underlying determinants of health and appears to abandon decades of health rights scholarship and jurisprudence. This scholarship and jurisprudence, although not entirely free from disagreements and shortcomings, is argued to offer a better framework for universal health coverage when strengthened with the paradigm …
Light May Have Triggered A Period Of Net Heterotrophy In Lake Superior, Soren Brothers, Paul Sibley
Light May Have Triggered A Period Of Net Heterotrophy In Lake Superior, Soren Brothers, Paul Sibley
Ecology Center Publications
Recent studies of Lake Superior, the Earth's largest freshwater lake by surface area, describe it as net heterotrophic (primary production < community respiration), making it a net source of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. This conclusion is largely based on measurements made between 1998 and 2001. We present a long‐term (1968–2016) analysis of ice‐free (April–November) surface oxygen (O2) saturation data collected by monitoring agencies. These data indicate that Lake Superior's surface waters are typically supersaturated with dissolved O2 from May to September (May–September mean is 103.5% ± 0.6%; pooled mean from April, October, and November is 97.6% ± 1.1%, standard error of the mean). However, these data also support prior studies which describe a state of net heterotrophy from 1998 to 2001. We investigated potential triggers for a transient heterotrophic period and discuss the sources of organic carbon necessary to fuel net heterotrophy in a large oligotrophic lake. We conclude that net heterotrophy likely resulted from an increase in light period and penetration driven by declines in cloud cover, increases in water clarity, and a reduction of winter ice cover following the 1997–1998 El Niño. Together, these could have depleted a pre‐existing pool of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) via photomineralization and/or photochemical degradation. Our results indicate that Lake Superior is typically net autotrophic (calculated annual CO2 influx = ∼ 0.4 Tg C). These results highlight how water clarity and aquatic DOC pools may interact to induce net metabolic shifts in large oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems.

Characteristic Of Mandibular Ameloblastoma And Postoperative Complication Influencing Factors In Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital During January 2008 – December 2012, Amir Juliansyah, Farida Briani
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Ameloblastoma is a quite rare case but a common odontogenic tumor found, about 11% of all odontogenic tumors. The tumor is locally aggressive odontogenic one with a tendency to have recurrence and may cause severe facial deformity and dysfunction if not treated properly. The slow growing nature of this tumor usually lead to a delay in diagnostic. Recurrence rate of ameloblastoma reported as 15–25% after radical treatment and 75–90% after conservative treatment. This study aimed to find out the characteristics and influencing factors that contributed to postoperative complication. Method. Those diagnosed as ameloblastoma who underwent total mandibulectomy, hemi–mandibulectomy, segmental …

How Does A 3-Week Nutrition Course Affect The Eating Behaviors Of Parents Among Migrant Farmworker Families In Michigan?, Keren Reyes
Honors Theses
Childhood obesity is a health concern in the United States, putting children at risk for serious health problems. Although there has been significant research of childhood obesity, less is known about how eating behaviors and parenting styles of Hispanic and Latino parents impact the health problems (e.g., obesity) of children. Literature demonstrates that Latina and Mexican American cultures shape parents’ feeding practices but most research fails to recognize the contexts of feeding practices within Latino community (Slusser, Neumann, Cumberland, Renenger, Fischer, & Frankel, 2012). As such, the purpose of this study is to identify the use of different parenting styles …

The Effect Of High Intensity Interval Training Vs Resistance-Based Circuit Training, Matthew Monaco
Honors Theses
High intensity interval training and resistance-based circuit training are both effective forms of exercise that promote muscular growth and can provide improvements in body composition. These different exercise methods were compared side-by-side in this study. The time commitment and intensity of each method were made uniform to yield the most accurate comparisons. Upon completion of the exercise regimen, each participant concluded by performing post-testing requirements that would be compared with their pre-testing results.

The Effect Of Dietary Interventions On Intestinal-Associated Metabolites And Immune Parameters, Sunita Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The obesity epidemic has driven the search for dietary interventions for weight reduction. In the current study we determined the role of dietary composition and also timing of feeding on weight loss, with a specific focus on changes in intestinal parameters. Mice were divided into different groups with different feeding protocols. Dietary interventions altered weight gain and body composition and intestinal parameters including small intestinal length and cecum weight. There was no difference in splenic or colonic B and T cell populations, but regulatory T cells numbers were altered with the vegan-based diet.

Indonesia Poverty Reduction Strategies: Shifting Policies To Promote Employment In The Poorest Four Deciles, Ardi Adji, Sri Hartini Rachmad
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
This paper observes the working status and conditions of people who fall into the poorest four deciles in Indonesia. The research aims to provoke policy shifts in the drive to accelerate poverty reduction in Indonesia, taking a longer view of people being more employable and less dependent; also identifying the dominant factors preventing people from moving out of poverty and improving their life quality. By comparing elements of gender, age, education and health against employment status and opportunities. Simultaneously social assistance and protection programs are evaluated in relation to their stated target groups to determine their suitability and their impact.
