No Farms No Food? A Response To Baylen Linnekin, Joshua Ulan Galperin May 2018

No Farms No Food? A Response To Baylen Linnekin, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

You have likely seen the bumper sticker, bold white text on a green background, reading “No Farms No Food.” The sticker is a product of, and in fact a tagline for, the American Farmland Trust. On the one hand, the point is obvious: As American Farmland Trust puts it, “[e]very meal on our plates [c]ontains ingredients grown on a farm. We all need farms to survive.” On the other hand, what seems like a plain statement on its face, “no farms no food,” is not so simple. Farms produce affordable food, they produce vast quantities of food, they produce healthy …

Nurses' Breastfeeding Knowledge And Confidence After Education Session, Anna Caroline Tillman May 2018

Nurses' Breastfeeding Knowledge And Confidence After Education Session, Anna Caroline Tillman

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: Education is an essential part of the nursing profession. Nurses should be teaching their patients every day, ensuring they understand the most reliable evidence-based practices. In breastfeeding education, however, there is a lack of education to expectant mothers on common breastfeeding methods, how to overcome common barriers, and general breastfeeding knowledge. If nurses can be effectively educated in breastfeeding knowledge and build their confidence in teaching their patients, then mothers will receive more thorough and helpful breastfeeding education. The hope in educating both nurses and mothers is to increase breastfeeding exclusivity rates to meet Healthy People2020 goals.

Objective: The …

The Impact Of Diabetes Mellitus On Burns And Standard Burn Treatments, Emma Shepard May 2018

The Impact Of Diabetes Mellitus On Burns And Standard Burn Treatments, Emma Shepard

Senior Honors Theses

Burns are complex injuries that trigger the stress response and result in increased blood glucose. Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine disorder with abnormal glucose regulation, can significantly alter the risk for burns and the treatment of burns. Pre-existing diabetes mellitus complicates burn treatments and healing ability. Diabetes mellitus may also develop directly from an unregulated stress response to the burn. The consideration of diabetes mellitus affects wound care, medications, and nutrition for burn patients. As patient advocates, nurses are responsible for caring for burn patients with awareness of endocrine complications. This paper provides a detailed overview of the pathophysiology, complications, and …

Faculty Publications

Starch retrogradation is an important factor affecting cake firmness. Effects of hydroxy-propyl-methylcellulose (HPMC) at 0.5% (w/w) or extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO) at 20% (w/w), either alone or together, on physicochemical properties and starch crystallinity of sponge cake during storage was investigated. Addition of EVCO increased specific volume and expansion ratio, while addition of HPMC increased water activity of the freshly baked sponge cake. Changes in firmness, moisture, and spin-lattice relaxation time from nuclear magnetic resonance (T1) of sponge cakes followed a first-order kinetic reaction. Use of HPMC and/or EVCO in sponge cake could retard the firmness rate in the …

Prostate Cancer In The Arab Population: An Overview, Osman Z. Al-Abdin, Ibrahim Z. Al-Beeshi May 2018

Prostate Cancer In The Arab Population: An Overview, Osman Z. Al-Abdin, Ibrahim Z. Al-Beeshi

Saudi Medical Journal

This review evaluated prostate cancer studies from around the world and investigated the causes of differences among them. Prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates showed significant discrepancies between countries and ethnicities. In North America as well as in other western countries, the most common cancer was found to be prostate cancer; however, it appears to be not as prevalent among men in the Middle East and North Africa. Statistics show that screening of prostate-specific antigen levels should be applied depending on ethnicity and age. Other environmental aspects such as dietary and androgenic factors are believed to have caused these differences.

Working Equids: A Case Study Investigating If Locus Of Control Effects Welfare In Central America, Lauren Ann Brizgys

Open Access Theses

Developing countries lack the resources and technological advancements commonly used by developed countries for production and must rely on manual or animal labor to aide in the creation, collection, and distribution of products for income. In Haiti and Honduras, the leading role of a working equid is to provide transportation for families and products to and from marketplaces. It is not uncommon for one equid to carry loads three times its body weight and make up to six trips, accumulating up to fifty miles per day, to and from its home. With extreme environmental and physical constraints placed on these …

Quality And Economic Analysis Of Green Coffee Beans Stored In Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bags, Natalie Kay Donovan May 2018

Quality And Economic Analysis Of Green Coffee Beans Stored In Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bags, Natalie Kay Donovan

Open Access Theses

Coffee farmers and cooperatives in Colombia are plagued by the high humidity that engulfs the Central Andean Mountain Ranges, where the majority of the country’s coffee farming presides. Farmers are forced to sell their yields immediately after harvests in order to mitigate quality loss due to the high moisture. Cooperatives are generally forced to store green coffee until enough volume is collected for export. Farmers and cooperatives are unable to utilize optimal storage methods to capitalize on price seasonality, leading to lower profits. Coffee is a luxury commodity and its price is almost entirely dependent on its quality, making it …

Effect Of Cyclic Heat Stress And Supplemented Inorganic And Organic Zinc Source Levels On Grow-Finish Pig Growth Performance, Estimated Body Composition, Intestinal Morphology And Gene Expression., Kayla Mills

Open Access Theses

Heat stress is a physiologic state where an animal can no longer properly regulate it’s body temperature to prevent hyperthermia. It has been well documented that heat stress can negatively impact feed intake, growth performance, carcass characteristics, gut morphology and integrity in swine. Finishing swine are particularly sensitive to heat stress which costs the U.S. swine industry millions of dollars annually. There are several ways heat challenges can be mitigated to reduce the negative impacts of heat stress during warmer temperatures, one of which being nutrition. Knowing that heat stress alters intestinal barrier function and morphology, we took a holistic …

Soil Microbial Community Dynamics During The Decomposition Period Of Winter Cover Crops, Clayton J. Nevins May 2018

Soil Microbial Community Dynamics During The Decomposition Period Of Winter Cover Crops, Clayton J. Nevins

Open Access Theses

Across the Midwest United States, there is an increasing number of agriculturalists incorporating cover crops and reduced tillage residue management into sustainable nutrient management plans. However, the impact of these treatments on the soil microbial community, and subsequently, on soil nutrient cycling and inorganic nitrogen (N) availability, is largely unknown. Therefore, this research had two objectives: i) to determine the impact of cover crop species on soil and litter enzyme activity and soil nitrogen supply during the cover crop decomposition period, and ii) to evaluate the impact of cover crops and reduced tillage on the soil microbial community diversity and …

Effect Of Starch-Based Hydrogel On Early Growth Of Corn, Vaibhav Pathak May 2018

Effect Of Starch-Based Hydrogel On Early Growth Of Corn, Vaibhav Pathak

Open Access Theses

Seed coating with highly absorbent polymers can potentially improve the water availability for early growth of seeds under dry conditions and therefore prevent associated delays in the emergence and reduced crop stand. The limited number of studies on hydrogel seed coatings have shown that their effect on seed growth is not always beneficial, and varies with plant species, amount of hydrogel used and amount of available water in the growing medium. The current work studied the effect of hydrogel seed coating on the early growth of corn using starch-based biodegradable hydrogels. The hydrogels were prepared from potato starch (PS) and …

Cover crops, plants grown during the fallow period between cash crop growing seasons, have gained increasing amounts of attention throughout the agriculture industry in recent years. Many producers use them to reduce soil erosion, scavenge nutrients, and improve soil structure, water infiltration, and soil health, but questions still remain on maximizing cover crop benefits while simultaneously maintaining or improving cash crop production. This study measured cover crop and no-tillage effects on soil nitrogen and cash crop yield across multiple sites in Indiana beginning in fall 2015 and ending in fall 2017, typically in a corn (Zea mays L.)/soybean (Glycine max …

Physiological And Molecular Response Of Soybean To Drought And Heat Stresses, Congshan Xu May 2018

Physiological And Molecular Response Of Soybean To Drought And Heat Stresses, Congshan Xu

Open Access Theses

Drought and heat are two of the major adverse environmental stresses for plants. The plant growth, productivity, morphology, physiology and biochemistry are found to be changed when the plants are grown at either drought or heat or combined stress conditions. Photosynthesis, stomata conductance, transpiration, water potential, and antioxidant systems were found to be involved in facilitating the stress responses. In addition, multiple molecular pathways, e.g., protective compound synthesis, protein and mRNA chaperones, cell membrane fluidity, plant hormone synthesis and transport, secondary metabolite synthesis, and flowering, have also been discovered to be involved in the response to these conditions. Soybean is …

Growth, Physiological And Molecular Mechanisms Of Low Nitrogen Stress Tolerance In Perennial Ryegrass, Yanyu Yao

Open Access Theses

Perennial ryegrass is a widely used cool-season grass for forage and turfgrass in the temperate regions. Perennial ryegrass needs high fertility levels to maintain its turf quality and production. Nitrogen (N) is a major macronutrient for plant growth and development. The deficiency of N can cause chlorosis, loss of shoot density and decrease in growth. However, the overuse of N can cause pollution in atmosphere, water and soil. The objectives of this study were to: (i) investigate growth and physiological mechanisms of perennial ryegrass accessions exposed to low N stress; (ii) examine the effects of low N stress on antioxidant …

A Genetic Approach To Pinning Down The Wanderer: Mapping Vagal Afferent Innervation Of The Mouse Intestinal Mucosa, Hannah Kathleen Serlin May 2018

A Genetic Approach To Pinning Down The Wanderer: Mapping Vagal Afferent Innervation Of The Mouse Intestinal Mucosa, Hannah Kathleen Serlin

Open Access Theses

Vagal afferents that supply the small intestine mucosa play a key role in signaling satiation and regulating digestion. Little is known about the morphology or distribution of this innervation. A major obstacle has been the ability to selectively label a large proportion of vagal mucosal afferents independent of other extrinsic and intrinsic gastrointestinal tract innervation. A recent breakthrough revealed that Nav1.8Cre-Tomato control (CON) mice express Tomato protein in ~80% nodose and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells and in mucosal afferents throughout the intestines (Gautron, 519:3085, 2011). Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy in CON mice (VAGX) resulted in a complete loss of this mucosal …
