Measuring Job-Fit And Career Paths Of Distance Learning Lirbrarians, Jennifer J. Rundels, Anne M. Casey
Measuring Person-Job Fit and Career Paths of Distance Learning Librarians
While person-job fit has been used to determine satisfaction in many professions, no research has been done among distance learning (DL) librarians. This study explores that concept by investigating person-job fit among librarians with primary DL responsibility compared to librarians with partial DL responsibility and whether a common career path exists among the two groups. Responses appear to suggest that DL librarians perceive a strong compatibility between their needs and desires and their jobs while both groups indicate that career advancement has been the primary factor concerning career path decisions.
This collection hosts the data associated with the submission of …

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The literature on neighborhoods and child obesity links contextual conditions to risk, assuming that if place matters, it matters in a similar way for everyone in those places. We explore the extent to which distinctive neighborhood types give rise to social patterning that produces variation in the odds of child obesity. We leverage geocoded electronic medical records for a diverse sample of over 135,000 children aged 2 to 12 and latent profile modeling to characterize places into distinctive neighborhood contexts. Multilevel models with cross-level interactions between neighborhood type and family socioeconomic standing (SES) reveal that children with different SES, but …

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Stabilized heterogeneous photocatalysts that use only solar light and air have been prepared and successfully employed to decontaminate water from organic pollutants. Organic dye pollutants present, for example in textile effluents, are one of the major sources of water pollution owing to their limited biodegradability, toxicity and potential carcinogenic risks. Before certifying water for public consumption, reuse in industries or for discharge in surface water the organic pollutants must be degraded, an effort that is energy intensive and currently requires complex methodologies. We report solid-state photocatalysts that use only visible light and air to treat wastewater. Perfluoroalkyl perfluoro-substituted zinc phthalocyanine …

Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz
Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Throughout the progression of feminist waves, women have both united in solidarity and fractured in ideologies. A primary problem in today's feminist movement is the negative connotation that was left by the second wave which has alienated both women and men. The result is a feminism that is associated with extremism, negating the original intention of promoting equality. In this qualitative case study, I work with feminist and post-feminist theory to note how women perceive feminist in present day. Through survey questions and responses, I document the complexities of today's women who identify controversies on policing within the community and …
Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph
Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph
Culture, Society, and Praxis
The classic form of the nation-state is quickly disintegrating in favor of more fluid forms of cultural identity. Much of this is attributed to the impact of globalization. And in the wake of a hyper-connected global order, there is little doubt that cosmopolitanism is one the most relevant discourses of the coming century.
But how is this abstract notion grounded and operationalized? Who are the cosmopolitans? And what does cosmopolitanism look like?
This paper hopes to examine cosmopolitanism within the context of Silicon Valley by redefining what it means to be cosmopolitan, presenting the narratives of three individuals, and addressing …

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
Online learning opportunities have greatly increased in past years. Various studies have examined online courses and instructor practices but have not examined students’ perceptions of their online courses and online instructors who were offered a voluntary online certification program. Students who took online courses at a Midwestern university completed a survey related to their perceptions of their individual online course and instructor. Results showed that instructors who were certified received higher, positive ratings than instructors who were not certified. The certification program utilizes a “faculty as student’ model, where faculty take courses from a student learner perspective, to provide experiential …

Crimes Against Humanity In Venezuela: Can The Icc Bring Justice To Venezuelan Victims?, Ayumary M. Fitzgerald
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
State parties to the Rome Statute submit to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This permanent and autonomous Court tries individuals for heinous international crimes, including crimes against humanity (CAH). Crimes such as murder, imprisonment, or torture, when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against a civilian population, with knowledge of the attack, are known as CAH. Under the Statute, national jurisdictions are primarily responsible for investigating and prosecuting those responsible for international crimes. So, before it can assert jurisdiction, the ICC must determine that a state party is unwilling or unable to prosecute …

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease characterized by preferential motor neuron death. Approximately 15% of ALS cases are familial, and mutations in the fused in sarcoma (FUS) gene contribute to a subset of familial ALS cases. FUS is a multifunctional protein participating in many RNA metabolism pathways. ALS-linked mutations cause a liquid–liquid phase separation of FUS protein in vitro, inducing the formation of cytoplasmic granules and inclusions. However, it remains elusive what other proteins are sequestered into the inclusions and how such a process leads to neuronal dysfunction and degeneration. In this study, we developed …

The performance of aptamer-based biosensors is crucially impacted by their interactions with physiological metal ions, which can alter their structures and chemical properties. Therefore, elucidating the nature of these interactions carries the utmost importance in the robust design of highly efficient biosensors. We investigated Mg 2+ binding to varying sequences of polymers to capture the effects of ionic strength and grafting density on ion binding and molecular reorganization of the polymer layer. The polymers are modeled as ssDNA aptamers using a self-consistent field theory, which accounts for non-covalent ion binding by integrating experimentally-derived binding constants. Our model captures the typical …
