Paid Parental Leave: An Investigation And Analysis Of Australian Paid Parental Leave Frameworks With Reference To Selected European Oecd Countries, Greg Lynn Jan 2018

Paid Parental Leave: An Investigation And Analysis Of Australian Paid Parental Leave Frameworks With Reference To Selected European Oecd Countries, Greg Lynn

Theses

xiii ABSTRACT In 2010, the Australian federal government introduced a national scheme of taxpayer-funded paid parental leave. This legislation was introduced only after much political debate and came after more than 100 years of reform to Australian industrial law to make employment laws work better for employees with families. These reforms occurred on the back of a long history of relatively slow female legal emancipation in Australia and the concept of employment rights for women having children is a relatively new legal concept. Australian employment law has traditionally been conceptualised in terms of the paradigm of ‘the male breadwinner,’ supported …

High Performance Static Random Access Memory Design For Emerging Applications, Xiaowei Chen Jan 2018

High Performance Static Random Access Memory Design For Emerging Applications, Xiaowei Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Memory wall is becoming a more and more serious bottleneck of the processing speed of microprocessors. The mismatch between CPUs and memories has been increasing since three decades ago. SRAM was introduced as the bridge between the main memory and the CPU. SRAM is designed to be on the same die with CPU and stores temporary data and instructions that are to be processed by the CPU. Thus, the performance of SRAMs has a direct impact on the performance of CPUs. With the application of mass amount data to be processed nowadays, there is a great need for high-performance CPUs. …

Wrongful Living, Alberto B. Lopez, Fredrick E. Vars

Essays, Reviews, and Shorter Works

Executing an advance directive that specifies a patient's wishes regarding end-of-life medical care is an exercise of self-determination--a conscious choice about the degree and type of medical intervention one wishes to receive under end-of-life circumstances. Empirical studies, however, consistently report that healthcare professionals fail to comply with advance directives; violations of a patient's interest in self-determination are alarmingly common. From a practical perspective, the conduct of either patients or healthcare professionals may make an advance directive unavailable, which results in noncompliance. Legally, courts have historically rejected claims for “wrongful living” associated with the prolongation of life that results from unwanted …

Food Safety Culture: An Underlying Cause For Success And Failures Of Food Safety Management Systems, Ashwini Kumar Vashisht Jan 2018

Food Safety Culture: An Underlying Cause For Success And Failures Of Food Safety Management Systems, Ashwini Kumar Vashisht

Food Safety

Food Safety Culture (FSC) is an emerging behavior-based food-safety management concept. FSC has been linked as an underlying cause for food-safety management-system failures during foodborne outbreaks and recall investigations. This paper reviews the available literature on FSC for the origin, definitions, factors, barriers, and dimensions that influence the FSC’s performance and measurements. Data were obtained from peer-reviewed journals as well as publicly available information on the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) websites. The roles of organizational leadership and communication, food-handler behaviors, risk perception, regulatory authorities, and technological advancements …

Foreign Material Identification And Removal In The Food Safety Industry, Daniel Richard Dumas Jan 2018

Foreign Material Identification And Removal In The Food Safety Industry, Daniel Richard Dumas

Food Safety

Changes in the food industry including the mass production in response to the globalization of the food chain have led to additional food safety and quality challenges for the food industry. One aspect of these challenges is the effective identification and removal of foreign materials from products. The development and implementation of new manufacturing processes, materials, and techniques can produce many types of foreign materials or contribute to the challenges to their removal. These challenges facing the food industry are requiring more levels of protection along with advances in technologies to help reduce the potential safety and quality concerns of …

Presence Of Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica On Wheat And Possible Control Measures, Cassie Alexandra Palm Anderson Jan 2018

Presence Of Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica On Wheat And Possible Control Measures, Cassie Alexandra Palm Anderson

Food Safety

Wheat (Triticum spp.) is one of the most important cereal crops grown in the U.S., with an average of 50 million acres planted on an annual basis. Wheat is milled into flour or semolina, which is used to make bread, cookies, noodles, and pasta. Because some consumers eat raw flour, it is necessary for it to be free of pathogens including Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. The fecal matter of cattle and poultry often contains these bacteria and can contaminate wheat. Currently, there are no requirements for controlling E. coli and S. enterica in wheat, which has resulted in outbreaks …

Cell Entrapment For Mitigating Fouling In Membrane Bioreactors Treating Domestic Wastewater, Chaipon Juntawang Jan 2018

Cell Entrapment For Mitigating Fouling In Membrane Bioreactors Treating Domestic Wastewater, Chaipon Juntawang

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been a process of choice for wastewater treatment and reuse because of several advantages over conventional process (activated sludge) including superior quality effluent, less biomass yields and more compact design. However, membrane fouling is a major drawback that hampers widespread and full-scale applications of MBRs. Cell entrapment is a relatively new wastewater treatment process. It involves cells artificially entrapped in a porous polymer matrix. In this dissertation research, three versions of entrapped cells-based MBR processes, aerobic MBR, anaerobic MBR and anaerobic forward osmosis (FO) MBR, were developed by using polyvinyl alcohol as a cell entrapment matrix. …

Scientific evidence indisputably demonstrates that lead poisoning causes permanent neurological damage and numerous co-morbidities for children and adults. Exposure to lead hazards irreversibly harms individuals and, left unchecked, can devastate communities into the future. In recognition of these threats, the President's Task Force on Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks to Children (Task Force) was established by Executive Order in 1997. The original Task Force created the first coordinated federal response to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in the United States and set an ambitious ten-year timeline to achieve its goals of prevention, treatment, research, and progress management. However, the most …

Crowdfunding For A Cause: Rhetorically Oriented Action Research With Christian Organizations, Adam J. Copeland Jan 2018

Crowdfunding For A Cause: Rhetorically Oriented Action Research With Christian Organizations, Adam J. Copeland

English

When it comes to fundraising, many congregations and faith-related organizations struggle to keep up in the competitive charitable giving landscape. In recent years, online crowdfunding platforms (e.g. Kickstarter, GoFundMe, Indiegogo) have grown to a multi-billion-dollar industry, supporting fundraisers for diverse causes both charitable and for-profit. Does crowdfunding offer faith-related organizations potentially valuable opportunities for fundraising? If so, how should faith-related non-profit organizations best ask for money online? To engage these questions, I employed a participatory action research framework to accompany, coach, and learn with organizations launching crowdfunding campaigns. This partnership resulted in meaningful engagement with nine would-be crowdfunders. Three of …

Breaking The Binary: Sex Power, Sentiment, And Subversive Agency In Anita Loos’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Krista Ann Aldrich Jan 2018

Breaking The Binary: Sex Power, Sentiment, And Subversive Agency In Anita Loos’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Krista Ann Aldrich

English

Anita Loos’ novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, first appeared in a 1925 issue of Harper’s Bazar to commercial success. Often compared to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, as both depict the 1920s and were published the same year, Blondes, the novel, and Loos herself would fade into relative obscurity. What little scholarship there is reads Lorelei within a binary of “dumb blonde/gold digger. This perpetuates the patriarchal, sentimental binary construction of female characters (and women) which limits them. I aim to challenge that understanding through my work revealing that the dumb blonde/gold digger are both sentimental categories, and Lorelei’s own …

intended focus is on the widespread response—in cities, churches, campuses, and corporations that together comprise “sanctuary networks”1—to the Trump Administration’s Executive Order 13768 Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States2 as an instance of the changing relationship between federal, local, and private organizations in the regulation of immigration. After briefly covering the legal background of the Trump Interior E.O., the focus of the Article shifts to the institutional dynamics arising in communities. These institutional dynamics exemplify the beginnings of a reimagi cement policy with a more integrative flavor.

Whistleblowing Speech And The First Amendment, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Articles

Alexander Meiklejohn the iconic First Amendment scholar who expounded the democratic selfgovernment theory of the freedom of speech posited that for democratic selfgovernment to function the voters themselves must possess the information necessary to hold the government accountable Yet the information necessary for the citizenry to render wise electoral verdicts not uncommonly belongs to the government itself and government officials often prove highly reluctant to share information that reflects badly on them and their work The lack of critically important information about the government's performance makes it difficult if not impossible for voters to hold government accountable on Election Day …

AbstractObjectiveRare genetic disorders resulting in prenatal or neonatal death are genetically heterogeneous, but testing is often limited by the availability of fetal DNA, leaving couples without a potential prenatal test for future pregnancies. We describe our novel strategy of exome sequencing parental DNA samples to diagnose recessive monogenic disorders in an audit of the first 50 couples referred.MethodExome sequencing was carried out in a consecutive series of 50 couples who had 1 or more pregnancies affected with a lethal or prenatal‐onset disorder. In all cases, there was insufficient DNA for exome sequencing of the affected fetus. Heterozygous rare variants (MAF < 0.001) in the same gene in both parents were selected for analysis. Likely, disease‐causing variants were tested in fetal DNA to confirm co‐segregation.ResultsParental exome analysis identified heterozygous pathogenic (or likely pathogenic) variants in 24 different genes in 26/50 couples (52%). Where 2 or more fetuses were affected, a genetic diagnosis was obtained in 18/29 cases (62%). In most cases, the clinical features were typical of the disorder, but in others, they result from a hypomorphic variant or represent the most severe form of a variable phenotypic spectrum.ConclusionWe conclude that exome sequencing of parental samples is a powerful strategy with high clinical utility for the genetic diagnosis of lethal or prenatal‐onset recessive disorders. © 2017 The Authors Prenatal Diagnosis published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Beyond The Tipping Point: Modifying The Five C'S To Empower Transgender And Gender Expansive Youth, Jonah De Chants, Heather Kennedy, Yolanda Anyon

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Transgender people have entered an unprecedented moment of visibility in American society and across the globe. However, transgender and gender expansive youth remain vulnerable to family rejection, harassment at school, and discrimination in healthcare and employment. Positive Youth Development (PYD) is an established framework for strengths-based practice with young people that is focused on helping youth develop the skills they need to become healthy, productive adults. In this manuscript, we reconceptualize the 5 C's of PYD to address the unique needs and experiences of transgender and gender expansive youth. We also provide specific guidance for empowering service providers to help …
