The A.H. Kotz Unnatural History Exhibit, Marian R. Trainor
The A.H. Kotz Unnatural History Exhibit, Marian R. Trainor
Honors College Theses
An exploration in two parts into the development of a narrative through manufactured evidence designed specifically to encourage the suspense of disbelief. The physical work exists within a faux anthropological museum exhibition focused around a human whose history and existence is entirely fabricated. The structural work is the layers of historical and practical research used to develop the suggestion of reality. The exhibit contains samples of the research, artifacts, and specimens collected by the deceased naturalist August Hermann Kotz, along with his falsified history. The second part consists of an overview of the research process and techniques needed to successfully …

Theses
Humans are and always will be consumers. They have utilized goods to solve problems and explore creative ideas. As cultures evolved, new products came about with increasing complexities and functions. People began to consume products for their meaning rather than for the service the objects provided. Currently, products dominate human life, a culture of materialism driving incredible consumption rates. Excessive consumption creates problems for the environment and human well-being. Many strategies have been proposed to reduce the rapid accumulating of products, however, as they do not address consumers, but instead producers, lasting impact has yet to be found. A solution …

Information Literacy Of International Student, Indonesian As Foreign Language (Ifl), In Indonesia, Ilsa Nurul Oktaviani, Margareta Aulia Rachman Mar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This research aims to analyze information literacy skill of Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) (Indonesian Language for Foreign Student) at Universitas Indonesia in accordance with their foreign language learning need, Bahasa. BIPA students are foreign students who study Indonesian language as their foreign language or it can be called as Indonesian as Foreign Language (IFL). Most existing researches discuss English as foreign language/second language (EFL/ESL), but no research on information literacy related to Indonesian as foreign language/second language. Therefore, this research is going to fill the gap between the previously conducted researches on information literacy related to language skill. …

Using Mixed Reality Displays For Observational Learning Of Motor Skills: A Design Research Approach Enhancing Memory Recall And Usability, Pwl Watson, D Livingstone
Using Mixed Reality Displays For Observational Learning Of Motor Skills: A Design Research Approach Enhancing Memory Recall And Usability, Pwl Watson, D Livingstone
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
When learning an action sequence, observing a demonstration informs the knowledge of movement execution and enhances the efficiency of motor skill acquisition. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual learning environments offer more opportunities for motor skill training as they afford observational learning. Mixed reality platforms (virtual reality, desktop PC, etc.) that render 3D virtual environments can therefore increase accessibility of observational content. To explore the effectiveness of these platforms so as to facilitate observational learning of action sequences, we developed the Recovery Position Application [1] (RPA) at the Interactive System Studio, University of Plymouth. The RPA was originally designed for mobile virtual reality. …

Documenting Agricultural Indigenous Knowledge And Provision Of Access Through Online Database Platform, Constant Okello-Obura
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The basic component of any country’s agricultural knowledge system is its agricultural indigenous knowledge (AIK). It encompasses the skills, experiences and insights of people, applied to maintain or improve their livelihood. Regrettably, today, many AIK systems are at risk of becoming extinct because of rapidly changing natural environments and fast pacing economic, political, and cultural changes on a global scale. Practices vanish if not documented and this curtails knowledge growth. Sometimes, many AIK practices disappear only because of the intrusion of foreign technologies that promise short-term gains or solutions. The tragedy of the impending disappearance of AIK is most obvious …

Implications For Biomechanists: Research Needed To Help Address Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Josh Mcgeown
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Sports-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a growing area of concern to the public, media, clinicians, and researchers. There are still a wide array of unanswered questions within the mTBI literature. A number of these questions could potentially be answered using biomechanical techniques to understand how the brain responds to impacts, how characteristics of impacts may influence individuals uniquely, and how impacts may influence recovery outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to highlight gaps in the mTBI literature that are relevant to biomechanists, and to propose how the application of biomechanics may help answer these questions in the …

Teacher Perceptions Of The Instructional Leadership Practices Of Principals, Don Leech, James L. Pate, Nicole M. Gibson, Ronny Green, Robert Smith
School Leadership Review
In today’s world school leadership, particularly instructional leadership, has taken on a new look. The era of high- stakes accountability has changed almost everything. The instructional leader of the 80’s was presented as an efficient top-down, task oriented manager who was focused on curriculum and instruction rather than buildings and budgets (Lashway, 2002). Gone are the days when principals spent most of their time with bus schedules, fire drills, and general curriculum, says the National Association of Elementary Principals (Henry, 2001). Leaders must keep abreast of state and federal goals, the latest technologies and teaching practices, as well as learn …

The Influence Of Full Facial Protection On Headform Peak Linear Acceleration At Different Helmet Impact Locations, Leigh Jeffries, Carlos Zerpa, Eryk Przysucha, Paolo Sanzo
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of ice hockey helmet facial protection on measures of peak linear acceleration at different helmet locations during horizontal dynamic impacts. A repeated measures factorial ANOVA revealed a two-way interaction effect between type of facial shielding protection and helmet impact location on measures of peak linear acceleration, F (1.53, 26.05) = 18.60, p < .001, h2 = .52. This finding indicates that the type of facial shielding protection can help mitigate linear impact accelerations at different helmet locations and consequently, minimize the risk of head injury. This outcome may have implications for athletes, …
