The Role Of The Academic Analyst In Shared Governance, Rebecca Ann Mathern
The Role Of The Academic Analyst In Shared Governance, Rebecca Ann Mathern
Dissertations and Theses
This research explores the roles of academic professionals in higher education, specific to how they engage in decision-making processes. Academic professionals provide important functions in higher education work but there is little in the literature about these actors and their contributions to leadership and governance. A literature review triangulated role theory, organization theory, and the shared-governance field of study to bring together actors within higher education and compare their involvement based on the shared-governance model in operation at different institutions. The researcher introduced the hypothesis that when registrars are not involved in curriculum management, there may be negative effects on …

The Contribution Of The Descending Pain Modulatory Pathway In Opioid Tolerance, Lindsay M. Lueptow, Amanda K. Fakira, Erin N. Bobeck
Biology Faculty Publications
Opioids remain among the most effective pain-relieving therapeutics. However, their long-term use is limited due to the development of tolerance and potential for addiction. For many years, researchers have explored the underlying mechanisms that lead to this decreased effectiveness of opioids after repeated use, and numerous theories have been proposed to explain these changes. The most widely studied theories involve alterations in receptor trafficking and intracellular signaling. Other possible mechanisms include the recruitment of new structural neuronal and microglia networks. While many of these theories have been developed using molecular and cellular techniques, more recent behavioral data also supports these …

A Health Needs Assessment Of The Filipino American Community In The Greater Las Vegas Area, Saruna Ghimire, Prescott Cheong, Lawrence Sagadraca, Lung-Chang Chien, Francisco S. Sy
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Purpose: The number of Filipino Americans in Las Vegas, Nevada, is growing considerably, but no research to date has assessed the specific health needs of this burgeoning population. Thus, this study aims to assess health behaviors, perceived community health problems, and self-reported diseases/conditions among Filipino Americans in the Greater Las Vegas area and evaluate any difference by gender. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 200 Filipino American adults residing in the Greater Las Vegas area using a prevalidated instrument. Results: The self-reported prevalence of hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes was 48%, 46%, and 25%, respectively. Adverse health behaviors, in …

The Influence Of Managerial Optimism And Self-Regulation On Learning And Business Growth Expectations Within An Emerging Economic Context, Stern Neill, Raghuvar Dutt Pathak, Barbara A. Ribbens, Terry W. Noel, Gurmeet Singh
Marketing
This paper examines psychological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie business growth expectations by examining how managerial optimism and self-regulatory focus influence learning behaviors. To empirically examine these relationships, the study situates in a resource-constrained business context by studying managers in two Pacific Island economies. Results indicate that a positive view toward gains encourages exploratory learning in unknown situations; whereas, a less optimistic disposition and avoidance are related to exploitative learning. This finding is consequential as managerial learning that leans toward development of new insights and possibilities is associated with greater business growth expectations versus learning that adheres to familiar and …

Disproportionate School Disciplinary Responses: An Exploration Of Prisonization And Minority Threat Hypothesis Among Black, Hispanic, And Native American Students, Meghan M. Mitchell, Gaylene Armstrong, Todd A. Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This research tests two potential explanations of school disciplinary responses: minority threat hypothesis and prisonization of schools. Data from the Arizona Safe and Drug-Free Schools (SDFS) survey and Arizona Youth Survey (AYS) are analyzed using ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions. Findings demonstrate that the percentage of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students was not associated with exclusionary responses to school misconduct, but was linked to decreases in mild and restorative disciplinary practices. Findings support the hypothesis that minority threat reduces access to mild and restorative disciplinary responses. Although, further research is needed on the roles of mental health professionals and …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Fitness trackers can engage users through automated self-monitoring of physical activity. Studies evaluating the utility of fitness trackers are limited among adolescents, who are often difficult to engage in weight management treatment and are heavy technology users.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a pilot randomized trial to describe the impact of providing adolescents and caregivers with fitness trackers as an adjunct to treatment in a tertiary care weight management clinic on adolescent fitness tracker satisfaction, fitness tracker utilization patterns, and physical activity levels.
METHODS: Adolescents were randomized to 1 of 2 groups (adolescent or dyad) at their initial weight management clinic …

Dialing It Back: Why Courts Should Rethink Students’ Privacy And Speech Rights As Cell Phone Communications Erode The ‘Schoolhouse Gate’, Nicholas J. Mcguire
Duke Law & Technology Review
The ubiquity of cell phones in today’s society has forced courts to change or dismiss established, but inapplicable analytical frameworks. Two such frameworks in the school setting are regulations of student speech and of student searches. This Article traces the constitutional jurisprudence of both First Amendment off-campus speech protection and Fourth Amendment search standards as applied to the school setting. It then analyzes how the Supreme Court’s ruling in Riley v. California complicates both areas. Finally, it proposes a pragmatic solution: by recognizing a categorical First Amendment exception for “substantial threats” against the school community, courts could accommodate students’ constitutional …
Economic Effects Of Climate Change In Alaska, Matthew Berman, Jennifer Schmidt
Economic Effects Of Climate Change In Alaska, Matthew Berman, Jennifer Schmidt
ISER Reports
We summarize the potential nature and scope of economic effects of climate change in Alaska that have already occurred and are likely to become manifest over the next 30-50 years. We classified potential effects discussed in the literature into categories according to climate driver, type of environmental service affected, certainty and timing of the effects, and potential magnitude of economic consequences. We then described the nature of important economic effects, and provided estimates of larger, more certain effects for which data were available. Largest economic effects were associated with costs to prevent damage, relocate, and replace infrastructure threatened by permafrost …

In Situ Investigation Of Thermally Activated Processes Using Mems-Based Devices: Practical Challenges & Applications, Sriram Vijayan
Doctoral Dissertations
In situ heating holders offer the possibility of studying thermally activated processes by performing real time, high temperature experiments inside the transmission electron microscope. The poor thermal stability of traditional furnace-type heating holders limits their use to a narrow range of materials and processes. Modern micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) based heating holders have significantly improved the ability to perform such experiments and have led to a revival in the field of in situ TEM. The excellent thermal stability of the MEMS devices allows us to carry out controlled heating and cooling experiments on both particulate and bulk samples at …

Are Knowledge and Attitude Being Main Contributors in Shaping Behavior of Pad Use among Female Adolescents in Rural Pangkep District? Inappropriate use of pads may lead to various reproductive health problems. Behavior of pad use is initiated by knowledge and attitude domain. Female adolescents are the most vulnerable group in which there is a tendency to develop negative stigma against menstruation so that impact on lack of exposure to the menstrual hygiene information. This study aims to determine association between knowledge and attitude in shaping behavior of pad use among female adolescents in rural. The type of research used was …
