Functional connectivity is one of the most widely used tools for investigating brain changes due to schizophrenia. Previous studies have identified abnormal functional connectivity in schizophrenia patients at the resting state brain network level. This study tests the existence of functional connectivity effects at whole brain and domain levels. Domain level refers to the integration of data from several brain networks grouped by their functional relationship. Data integration provides more consistent and accurate information compared to an individual brain network. This work considers two domain level measures: functional connectivity strength and randomness. The first measure is simply an average of …

Cfd Modelling To Evaluate The Effect Of Digester Temperature On Biogas Production, Shuichi Torii

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

Biogas production from chicken manure and food solid waste has grabbed the attention of engineers and managers globally because of the substantial advantages in achieving environmental protection, generation of energy and Green House Gas emission reductions. However, there are a number of problems involved in scaling up experimental Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants to field level plants. One of the major problems associated with AD is mixing, which is a key component in segregating synthesized gas and biomass from digester liquid, enhancing homogeneity and in ensuring adequate contact between bacteria and substrate in the Anaerobic Digestion. Besides this, temperature plays a …

J-aggregates of anionic meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin form at intermediate pH (2.3–3.1) in the presence of NiSO₄ or ZnSO₄ (ionic strength, I.S. = 3.2 M). These aggregates convert to monomeric porphyrin units via metallation with copper(II) ions. The kinetics for the disassembly process, as monitored by UV/vis spectroscopy, exhibits zeroth-order behavior. The observed zeroth-order rate constants show a two-term dependence on copper(II) ion concentrations: linear and second order. Also observed is an inverse dependence on hydrogen ion concentration. Activation parameters have been determined for the disassembly process leading to ΔH^≠ = (+163 ± 15) kJ·mol⁻¹ and ΔS^≠ = (+136 ± 11) J·K⁻¹. A …

Mathematical Model For Designing A Light Prismatic Panel, Islam A. Mashaly, Khaled Nassar, Salah M. El Haggar

Faculty Journal Articles

Adequate daylighting inside built spaces helps reaching satisfactory levels of energy consumption by reducing the usage of artificial lighting. Moreover, it is a major source in adjusting the occupants’ visual comfort which boosts productivity and concentration. Nevertheless, inefficient design would result in increasing the solar hear gain and increasing the indoor temperatures, as well as uneven light distribution would result in the “cave effect” phenomena. A Sustainable complex fenestration system is proposed in this paper that diffuses and redirects daylight through a prismatic panel. The panel will redirect the excessive direct light upwards and reduce the light from going downwards …

Domain Rearrangement And Denaturation In Ebola Virus Protein Vp40, Rudramani Pokhrel, Pornthep Sompornpisut, Prem Chapagain, Brian Olson, Bernard Gertsman, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

The VP40 protein plays a critical role in coordinating the virion assembly, budding, and replication of the Ebola virus. Efforts have been made in recent years to understand various aspects of VP40 structure, dynamics, and function such as assembly of the protein and its roles in virus replication and penetration of the protein into the plasma membrane. A major conformational transformation is necessary for VP40 to form some of its oligomeric structures and to perform various functions. This conformational change from a compact structure with the N-terminal domain (NTD) and C-terminal domain (CTD) closely associated involves a dissociation or springing-out …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent progress on the theory of potential-based A-φ formulationin the integral form and its electromagnetic applications are summarized and presented here. By using Lorenz gauge and solving the vector and scalar potential formulations in tandem, the A-φ formulationac-curately captures the correct physics of both electrostatics and magnetostatics. The wide-band stable, dense-discretization breakdown free and structure-independent solver provides an alternative solution to various electromagnetic scattering and circuital problems. Also, the A-φformulationis applied to solve the characteristic modes at low frequencies.

Alchemistic Metaphors In Comparative Law: Mixed Legal Systems, Reception Of Laws And Legal Transplants, Andreas Rahmatian Dec 2018

Alchemistic Metaphors In Comparative Law: Mixed Legal Systems, Reception Of Laws And Legal Transplants, Andreas Rahmatian

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The terms “mixed legal systems” and “legal transplants” are used frequently in comparative law. What they denote exactly, is difficult to ascertain: what does the mixité consist of, what are its ingredients or building blocks; which types of mixité exist, how are legal transplants transformed in the receiving legal system? Comparative lawyers often resort to metaphors when they try to describe and explain these complex phenomena: metaphors from cooking, music, horticulture or biology. Whenever there are mixtures, trans-formations, or transmutations, metaphors from the philosophical concepts of alchemy are at least equally illuminating. This article discusses the different problems of conceptualising …

Orbital Angular Momentum Generation Using Composite Quasi-Continuous Metasurfaces With Perfect Efficiency, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A composite perfect electric conductor (PEC)-perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) metasurface is proposed for orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation. Each scatterer on the metasurface consists of an anisotropic PEC layer and an isotropic PMC layer. Unlike conventional metasurfaces that composed of discrete scatterers, the scatterers on the proposed metasurface form a quasi-continuous pattern. Therefore, negative consequences of periodicity breaking from the patterned scatterers with varying sizes or orientations and their mutual coupling are avoided. We model the scatterer using Jones matrix. Its design is based on the features of PEC and PMC, which abandons complicated optimization process. The patterning of scatterers …
