Investigation Of An Unusual Thin Layer Descending Through The Upper Stratosphere, Houston D. Bentley Dec 2018

Investigation Of An Unusual Thin Layer Descending Through The Upper Stratosphere, Houston D. Bentley

Physics Capstone Projects

Lidar observations on the night of 19-20 February 2004 at Logan, Utah (41.74 N, 111.81 W) revealed a strange thin layer which descended from roughly 55 km to 30 km over seven hours. Approximations are made for the dimensions and descent rate of the layer. Although the particle radius and density are unknown, a range can be determined from the descent rate and reference to the sizes of known particles. Several possible sources for the layer are explored, concluding that an object entering the Earth’s atmosphere was the most probable cause.

The Dark And Middle Ages, Edward Jayne Dec 2018

The Dark And Middle Ages, Edward Jayne

English Faculty Publications

For the most part only Plato's teachings supported by a limited version of Aristotelian cosmology supportive of Platonism survived the decline of ancient Greek philosophy during the Roman Empire. Christianity later prevailed, and toward the end of the Middle Ages Aristotle’s secular perspective was only taken into account by Arab philosophers such as Averroes and Avicenna. After the collapse of Arab civilization during the twelfth century, the secular concept of a double truth between belief and reason put philosophy on equal footing with religion in such universities as Cordoba and the University of Paris. After a large assortment of ancient …

As The Clothing Industry Is A Major Polluter, Sustainable Fashion Is Rising, Gabe Herman Dec 2018

As The Clothing Industry Is A Major Polluter, Sustainable Fashion Is Rising, Gabe Herman

Capstones

That the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world is one of the industry’s best-kept secrets — it uses a quarter of the chemicals produced globally, and its share of the world’s CO2 emissions is expected to rise from 2 percent to 26 percent in the next 30 years. Developing nations — where many factories are located — are most affected. Every year in Bangladesh, for example, tanneries dump enough toxic waste into rivers to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Advocates and some in the fashion world are working to not only get the word out, …

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

We report here on a unique, newly discovered, silica-rich ungrouped achondrite Northwest Africa 11575 (NWA 11575). NWA 11575 is one of four known silica-rich ungrouped achondrites, presenting evidence for igneous processes resulting in evolved compositions early in the history of the solar system. It is unique from the other silica-rich ungrouped achondrites in that it has pyroxene compositional trends matching those of lunar samples and martian meteorites; contains quartz and potassium feldspar; and contains oxygen, hydrogen, and chromium isotopes that are similar to those of LL chondrites. Together, these four silica-rich ungrouped achondrites provide evidence for evolved compositions resulting from …

Black Networks In Smart Cities, Shaibal Chakrabarty Dec 2018

Black Networks In Smart Cities, Shaibal Chakrabarty

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present the Black Networks solution to protect both the data and the metadata for mobile ad-hoc Internet of Things (IoT) networks in Smart Cities. IoT networks are gaining popularity with billions of deployed nodes, and increasingly carrying mission-critical data, whose compromise can lead to catastrophic consequences. IoT nodes are resource-constrained and often exist within insecure environments, making them vulnerable to a broad range of active and passive attacks. Black IoT networks are designed to mitigate multiple communication-based attacks by encrypting the data and the metadata, within a communication frame or packet, while remaining compatible with the …

Modulating Hallmarks Of Cholangiocarcinoma, Cody Wehrkamp Dec 2018

Modulating Hallmarks Of Cholangiocarcinoma, Cody Wehrkamp

Theses & Dissertations

How are cholangiocarcinoma cells different from non-malignant cholangiocytes?

All of the hallmarks of cancer apply- those reported in this dissertation include cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and evasion of growth suppression. My studies began with testing how apoptosis might be regulated through embelin, a small molecule reported to sensitize cells to apoptosis by blocking XIAP. My data however revealed that embelin reduced the proliferative capacity in cholangiocarcinoma cells, but did not increase cell death. Malignant cells exhibit dysregulation of microRNA processing and expression. Hence, my studies seeking ways that cholangiocarcinoma eludes apoptosis transitioned to the oncomiR miR-106b, which is overexpressed in …

Evaluating Rater Effects In The Context Of Ethical Reasoning Essay Assessment: An Application Of The Many-Facets Rasch Measurement Model, Madison A. Holzman Dec 2018

Evaluating Rater Effects In The Context Of Ethical Reasoning Essay Assessment: An Application Of The Many-Facets Rasch Measurement Model, Madison A. Holzman

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Performance assessments are an often desired type of assessment due to their potential for alignment between the assessment and reality. However, due to the rater-mediated nature of scoring (Eckes, 2015), performance assessments have psychometric challenges that cannot be ignored in testing and assessment work. Specifically, performance assessment scores are prone to rater effects, or systematic differences in how raters evaluate performance assessment products (Myford & Wolfe, 2003). The purpose of this project was to evaluate ethical reasoning essay scores for rater effects. The Many-Facets Rasch Measurement (MFRM) model was used to evaluate ethical reasoning essay scores for rater leniency/severity effects, …

Overall Sound Pressure Level Contours Of Jet Noise By Cartesian Acquisition Grid, Stephen Perry Dec 2018

Overall Sound Pressure Level Contours Of Jet Noise By Cartesian Acquisition Grid, Stephen Perry

Theses and Dissertations

Noise pollution from aircraft is an ever-increasing issue in urban areas. Venting exhaust over body panels could reduce perceived sound pressure levels (SPL) by absorption or redirection. This paper investigates the farield spectra and sound propagation of a flat panel held near an axis-symmetric supersonic jet. In contrast to typical radial acquisition, Overall sound pressure level (OASPL) contours are constructed from a 9 by 23 cartesian acquisition gird, spaced equidistantly at 3.67 Jet Diameters (Dj). Three panel configurations each at three nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) are discussed. Additionally, a source finding algorithm is developed and shows source locations by frequency. …

Micromechanics: Crystal Plasticity Links For Deformation Twinning, Yub Raj Paudel Dec 2018

Micromechanics: Crystal Plasticity Links For Deformation Twinning, Yub Raj Paudel

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the ability of crystal plasticity to incorporate the Schmid’s law at each integration point has been a powerful tool to simulate and predict the slip behavior at the grain level and the succeeding heterogeneous stress/strain localization and texture evolution at the macroscopic level. Unfortunately, this remarkable capability has not been replicated for materials where twinning becomes a noticeable deformation mechanism, namely in the case of low-stacking fault energy cubic, orthorhombic, and hexagonal close packed structures. This dissertation is an attempt to gain understanding on the heterogeneous deformation due to twinning through various techniques including micromechanics, discrete dislocation dipole loops, …

Models And Algorithms To Solve Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Designing And Managing Problem Under Uncertainty, Md Abdul Quddus Dec 2018

Models And Algorithms To Solve Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Designing And Managing Problem Under Uncertainty, Md Abdul Quddus

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies a framework in support electric vehicle (EV) charging station expansion and management decisions. In the first part of the dissertation, we present mathematical model for designing and managing electric vehicle charging stations, considering both long-term planning decisions and short-term hourly operational decisions (e.g., number of batteries charged, discharged through Battery-to-Grid (B2G), stored, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), renewable, grid power usage) over a pre-specified planning horizon and under stochastic power demand. The model captures the non-linear load congestion effect that increases exponentially as the electricity consumed by plugged-in EVs approaches the capacity of the charging station and linearizes it. The …

Variations On A Theme: Using Amino Acid Sequences To Generate Music, Aaron Kosmatin

Master's Projects

In this project, we explore using a musical space to represent the properties of amino acids. We consider previous mappings and explore the limitations of these mappings. In this exploration, we will propose a new method of mapping into musical spaces that extends the properties that can be represented. For this work, we will use amino acid sequences as our example mapping. The amino acid properties we will use include mass, charge, structure, and hydrophobicity. Finally, we will show how the different musical properties can be compared for similarity.

An Assessment Of State Equations Of Air For Modeling A Blast Load Simulator, Gustavo Emmanuelli Dec 2018

An Assessment Of State Equations Of Air For Modeling A Blast Load Simulator, Gustavo Emmanuelli

Theses and Dissertations

When an explosive detonates above ground, air is principally the only material involved in the transmission of shock waves that can result in damage. Hydrodynamic codes that simulate these explosions use equations of state (EOSs) for modeling the behavior of air at these high-pressure, high-velocity conditions. An investigation is made into the effect that the EOS selection for air has on the calculated overpressure-time waveforms of a blast event. Specifically, the ideal gas, Doan-Nickel, and SESAME EOSs in the SHAMRC code were used to reproduce experiments conducted at the Blast Load Simulator (BLS), a large-scale shock tube operated by the …

An Elastic Constitutive Model Of Spacetime And Its Applications, Tichomir G. Tenev Dec 2018

An Elastic Constitutive Model Of Spacetime And Its Applications, Tichomir G. Tenev

Theses and Dissertations

We introduce an elastic constitutive model of gravity that enables the interpretation of cosmological observations in terms of established ideas from Solid Mechanics and multiscale modeling. The behavior of physical space is identified with that of a material-like medium called "cosmic fabric," which exhibits constitutive behavior. This cosmic fabric is a solid hyperplate that is broad in the three ordinary spatial dimensions and thin in a fourth hyperspatial dimension. Matter in space is treated as fabric inclusions that prescribe in-plane (three-dimensional) strain causing the transverse bending of the fabric into the fourth hyperspatial dimension. The linearized Einstein-Hilbert action, which governs …

Intra-Exchange Cryptocurrency Arbitrage Bot, Eric Han

Master's Projects

Cryptocurrencies are defined as a digital currency in which encryption techniques are utilized to regulate generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, independent of a central governing body such as a bank. Due to the large number of cryptocurrencies currently available, there inherently exists many price discrepancies due to market inefficiencies. Market inefficiencies occur when the price of assets do not reflect their true value. In fact, these types of pricing discrepancies exist in other financial markets, including fiat currency exchanges and stock exchanges. However, these discrepancies are more significant in the cryptocurrency domain due to …
