The Persistence Of The Associate Degree Nursing Student: The Lost Nurse, Stella A. Barber
Theses and Dissertations
There is controversy surrounding the entry-level degree to the profession of nursing. This study had the focus of showing the persistence of the associate degree nursing student as a way of giving evidence to maintaining this pathway as entry to nursing. Narrative inquiry was used to interview 10 students and 3 faculty on the persistence of the nursing student. Callista Roy's Coping Adaptation Processing Scale was taken by 51 students enrolled in the same nursing program. The overarching themes of the student interviews were goals, learning environment, and admission criteria. The overarching theme as a result of the Coping Adaptation …

We present SeqOthello, an ultra-fast and memory-efficient indexing structure to support arbitrary sequence query against large collections of RNA-seq experiments. It takes SeqOthello only 5 min and 19.1 GB memory to conduct a global survey of 11,658 fusion events against 10,113 TCGA Pan-Cancer RNA-seq datasets. The query recovers 92.7% of tier-1 fusions curated by TCGA Fusion Gene Database and reveals 270 novel occurrences, all of which are present as tumor-specific. By providing a reference-free, alignment-free, and parameter-free sequence search system, SeqOthello will enable large-scale integrative studies using sequence-level data, an undertaking not previously practicable for many individual labs.
Common Sense And Common Nonsense: A Conversation About Mental Attitudes, Science, And Society, Daniel S. Levine
Common Sense And Common Nonsense: A Conversation About Mental Attitudes, Science, And Society, Daniel S. Levine
Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
Daniel S. Levine's Common Sense and Common Nonsense observes human decision making, ethics, and social organization as illuminated by the scientific disciplines of neural network theory, neuroscience, experimental psychology, and dynamical systems theory. It is a book whose aim is advocacy as well as research. Its goal is to use an understanding of our brains and minds to better operationalize Aldous Huxley's admonition to "try to be a little kinder." It wanders over examples from sociology, politics, economics, religion, literature, and many other fields but looks at all as examples of a few common themes. The "common nonsense" of the …

Automated And Optimized Sensor Deployment Using Building Models And Electromagnetic Simulation, Chunhee Cho, Jeewoong Park, Kyungki Kim
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
With the advent of wireless sensing technology and interest in tracking resources, researchers have developed advanced tracking algorithms by using one or more sensor systems for improved accuracy and reliability of tracking. The objective of this research lies in another aspect−deployment−of tracking that has received only little attention until now. The research explores a method for sensor deployment particularly designed for the building in which the sensors are used. To tailor our solution to a specific building, we integrate a building information model with an electromagnetic energy analysis. By using such a model, the system extracts the properties of building …

Assessing Ecosystem Services From The Forestry-Based Reclamation Of Surface Mined Areas In The North Fork Of The Kentucky River Watershed, Kumari Gurung, Jian Yang, Lei Fang
Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications
Surface mining is a major driver of land use land cover (LULC) change in many mountainous areas such as the Appalachian region. Typical reclamation practices often result in land cover dominated by grass and shrubs. Assessing ecosystem services that can be obtained from a forest landscape may help policy-makers and other stakeholders fully understand the benefits of forestry-based reclamation (FRA). The objectives of this study are to (1) identify how surface mining and reclamation changed the LULC of a watershed encompassing the north fork of the Kentucky River, (2) assess the biophysical value of four major ecosystem services under the …

Workflow Specification And Inference In Some Extension Of Allen’S Interval Logic., G.S Plesniewicz
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
A workflow is an automation of a process, in which agents (people or programs) are involved in activities for solving a set of tasks in order to attain a common goal. The concept of workflow appeared in business informatics. Currently, the workflow techniques are used in many other fields of informatics (medical and bioinformatics, organization of scientific researches, computer-aided design and manufacturing, robotics et al,) Many methods and formalisms were applied for specifying workflows. Specific logical languages were used for this. In particular, temporal logics are popular as workflow specification formalisms. Allen’s interval logic is the simplest temporal logic, but …

Method Of Solving Incorrect Tasks Formed By Construction Of Fuzzy Models Assessing The Weakly Formallized Processes., D.T Muxamediyeva, X.A Primova
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The article examines the improvement of the method for obtaining a fuzzy and fuzzy-stable solution to incorrect problems arising in the construction of a model for estimating the state of weakly formalizable processes using various membership functions based on the theory of fuzzy sets. The proposed method makes it possible to construct a correct fuzzy model of weakly formalizable processes.

Rosenzweig's Star And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick
Rosenzweig's Star And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
As Moses (1992), Pollock (2009), and others have noted, Franz Rosenzweig was committed to systematic thought and developed in The Star of Redemption a highly structured philosophical theology. This paper argues that Rosenzweig’s thought has affinities with contemporary systems theory. While being systematic is not the same as using systems theoretic ideas, systematicity in any domain of knowledge invariably requires general ideas that are applicable to different phenomena. Such ideas are the core of systems theory. It is not surprising that a philosophical-theological work should have to some extent a systems-theoretic character, since systems ideas are ubiquitous not only in …

Construction Of Fuzzy Risk Assessment Models., T.F Bekmuratov, B.T Solieva
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The tasks of making decisions on risk assessment, depending on the conditions of uncertainty, are divided into two types: decision-making tasks under conditions where the initial data are stochastic; decision-making tasks under conditions when the initial data are of a non-stochastic nature, and the necessary confidence limits for the parameters of the processes under investigation are unknown or unclear. In problems of the second type, risks are manifested to a greater extent than the first, since in solving problems it is necessary to take into account not only statistical uncertainty, but also linguistic. At the same time, one should consider …

The System Of Full-Scale Modelling Of Movable Object With An Operator In The Control Loop., A.F Verlan, V.A Fedorchuk
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The principles of organization of a full-scale modelling of a moving object with an operator in its control loop are considered in the article. The task of reproducing the required dynamic characteristics, which the simulated moving object possesses, is solved by correcting the control signals for a moving object with similar dynamic properties. The developed method, for example, can be used to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the aircraft by another aircraft provided with a unit of adjustment of control.

Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Stable algorithms for the formation of control actions in local-optimal adaptive control systems for dynamic objects are given. Considering that the initial equations for estimating the parameters of an object and a control device, as a rule, are ill-conditioned, it becomes necessary to use regular methods. The stable algorithms for finding the desired solutions based on the methods of the minimum pseudoinverse matrix and singular decomposition, which contribute to improving the accuracy of the formation of control actions, are given.
