Beam Theory For Classical And Quantum Nonlinear Optics---Exposing Classical And Quantum Correlations Of Transverse-Spatial Modes, Robert Nicholas Lanning Oct 2018

Beam Theory For Classical And Quantum Nonlinear Optics---Exposing Classical And Quantum Correlations Of Transverse-Spatial Modes, Robert Nicholas Lanning

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Optics is arguably the most important branch of physics that has ever been studied. It is not only an essential ingredient of many other branches of physics that we study, it governs how we see, how we measure, and how we communicate in the modern world. And as the world continues to change, so do our tools and resources. In a relatively short amount of time, we have progressed from rudimentary tools that shape the world around us, to tools that harness the fundamental laws of nature. Unsurprisingly, the laws of nature governing optics remain paramount. This is because many …

Sums Involving The Number Of Distinct Prime Factors Function, Tanay Wakhare Oct 2018

Sums Involving The Number Of Distinct Prime Factors Function, Tanay Wakhare

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We find closed form expressions for finite and infinite sums that are weighted by $\omega(n)$, where $\omega(n)$ is the number of distinct prime factors of $n$. We then derive general convergence criteria for these series. The approach of this paper is to use the theory of symmetric functions to derive identities for the elementary symmetric functions, then apply these identities to arbitrary primes and values of multiplicative functions evaluated at primes. This allows us to reinterpret sums over symmetric polynomials as divisor sums and sums over the natural numbers.

Local Warming In Low Latitude Locations: A Time Series Analysis, Ryan Pittman Oct 2018

Local Warming In Low Latitude Locations: A Time Series Analysis, Ryan Pittman

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Global warming is a well-known and well-studied phenomenon pertaining to a gradual increase of average global temperatures over time. Many global warming mathematical models make certain assumptions regarding the factors that impact global temperature. These assumptions include effects from increased global carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and the melting ice sheets, among others. This paper draws conclusions about temperature changes without the assumptions needed for the global warming mathematical models. Instead of using computer models to project temperatures on a global scale, 33 low-latitude locations in the southern United States were individually studied to see if each one has …

On The Speed Of An Excited Asymmetric Random Walk, Mike Cinkoske, Joe Jackson, Claire Plunkett Oct 2018

On The Speed Of An Excited Asymmetric Random Walk, Mike Cinkoske, Joe Jackson, Claire Plunkett

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

An excited random walk is a non-Markovian extension of the simple random walk, in which the walk’s behavior at time n is impacted by the path it has taken up to time n. The properties of an excited random walk are more difficult to investigate than those of a simple random walk. For example, the limiting speed of an excited random walk is either zero or unknown depending on its initial conditions. While its limiting speed is unknown in most cases, the qualitative behavior of an excited random walk is largely determined by a parameter δ which can be computed …

Probabilities Involving Standard Trirectangular Tetrahedral Dice Rolls, Rulon Olmstead, Doneliezer Baize

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The goal is to be able to calculate probabilities involving irregular shaped dice rolls. Here it is attempted to model the probabilities of rolling standard tri-rectangular tetrahedral dice on a hard surface, such as a table top. The vertices and edges of a tetrahedron were projected onto the surface of a sphere centered at the center of mass of the tetrahedron. By calculating the surface areas bounded by the resultant geodesics, baseline probabilities were achieved. Using a 3D printer, dice were constructed of uniform density and the results of rolling them were recorded. After calculating the corresponding confidence intervals, the …

A Proof Of The "Magicness" Of The Siam Construction Of A Magic Square, Joshua Arroyo Oct 2018

A Proof Of The "Magicness" Of The Siam Construction Of A Magic Square, Joshua Arroyo

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

A magic square is an n x n array filled with n2 distinct positive integers 1, 2, ..., n2 such that the sum of the n integers in each row, column, and each of the main diagonals are the same. A Latin square is an n x n array consisting of n distinct symbols such that each symbol appears exactly once in each row and column of the square. Many articles dealing with the construction of magic squares introduce the Siam method as a "simple'' construction for magic squares. Rarely, however, does the article actually prove that the …

Department of Physics Publications

The phenomenon of cloud voids, i.e., elongated volumes inside a cloud that are devoid of droplets, was observed with laser sheet photography in clouds at a mountain-top station. Two experimental cases, similar in turbulence conditions yet with diverse droplet size distributions and cloud void prevalence, are reported. A theoretical explanation is proposed based on the study of heavy inertial sedimenting particles inside a Burgers vortex. A general conclusion regarding void appearance is drawn from theoretical analysis. Numerical simulations of polydisperse droplet motion with realistic vortex parameters and Mie scattering visual effects accounted for can explain the presence of voids with …

Depth Estimation Based On Pyramid Normalized Cross-Correlation Algorithm For Vergence Control, A Mohamed, Pf Culverhouse, A Cangelosi, C Yang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

OAPA A depth estimation algorithm based on vergence vision using a mechanical joint attached to two cameras is proposed. A Gaussian pyramid template-matching approach is used to align the view of the slave camera to the fixation point of the master camera. The master camera uses an object detection algorithm to find the target’s centroid and centers it relative to the image coordinates. Then, vergence movement of the slave camera is performed using a pyramid normalized cross-correlation algorithm. Simple geometric triangulation is employed to compute the depth of that target. This proposed method was implemented using an active binocular vision …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Physical media (like surveillance cameras) and social media (like Instagram and Twitter) may both be useful in attaining on-the-ground information during an emergency or disaster situation. However, the intersection and reliability of both surveillance cameras and social media during a natural disaster are not fully understood. To address this gap, we tested whether social media is of utility when physical surveillance cameras went off-line during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Specifically, we collected and compared geo-tagged Instagram and Twitter posts in the state of Florida during times and in areas where public surveillance cameras went off-line. We report social media content …

A three-dimensional, high-resolution, Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) was used to study the dynamics of Barataria Estuary located in the Southeastern Louisiana. Three numerical experiments with different discharge scenarios, including the actual discharge (average ~ 160 m3 s-1) from the Davis Pond Diversion (DPD) over three months from April to June 2010, no discharge (NO), and the proposed Mid-Barataria Diversion (MBD) with a constant discharge of 850 m3 s-1, were conducted to investigate the impacts of river diversions on salinity gradients and residence times in the estuary. The three-month average salinity indicated that surface …

Effective Visualization Approaches For Ultra-High Dimensional Datasets, Gurminder Kaur Oct 2018

Effective Visualization Approaches For Ultra-High Dimensional Datasets, Gurminder Kaur

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Multivariate informational data, which are abstract as well as complex, are becoming increasingly common in many areas such as scientific, medical, social, business, and so on. Displaying and analyzing large amounts of multivariate data with more than three variables of different types is quite challenging. Visualization of such multivariate data suffers from a high degree of clutter when the numbers of dimensions/variables and data observations become too large. We propose multiple approaches to effectively visualize large datasets of ultrahigh number of dimensions by generalizing two standard multivariate visualization methods, namely star plot and parallel coordinates plot. We refine three variants …

Large Eddy Simulations Of Vertical Jets In Crossflow, Pranaya Pokharel Oct 2018

Large Eddy Simulations Of Vertical Jets In Crossflow, Pranaya Pokharel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Jets in crossflow (JICF) have applications ranging from oil spill to film cooling of turbine blades. Hence, an understanding of the flow physics is important. The majority of the research has been conducted for low velocity ratios between jet and crossflow with round jets. JICF is demonstrated to behave differently for high velocity ratios and different jet shapes. Circular and rectangular jets are commonly used in aircraft applications. Current study focuses on high velocity ratio JICF issuing from both circular and rectangular exit.

For simulating JICF, an in house code “Chem3D” is used with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to model …
