Sequestration Effect On The Open-Cyclic Switchable Property Of Warfarin Induce By Cyclodextrin: Time-Resolved Fluorescence Study, Naji Saleh Al-Dubaili
Chemistry Theses
In this work, the photophysical properties of the fluorescent anticoagulant drug warfarin (W) were examined in water and inside methyl-β-cyclodextrins (Me-β- CD) through absorption and time-resolved fluorescence measurements at pH 3 and 9 and upon the selective excitation of different isomers of warfarin at 280 and 320 nm. The values of binding constants (2.9 × 103 M–1 and 4.2 × 102 M–1 for protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) were extracted from the spectrophotometric data. Both absorption and time-resolved fluorescence results established that the interior of the macromolecular host binds preferentially the open protonated form, red shifts …

Development And Characterization Of A Portable Apparatus For Continuous Measurement Of Hydrogen Sulfide In Gas Streams, Bashar Yousef Abu Hattab
Chemistry Theses
A novel detection scheme for the hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was described and patented recently by researchers at UAE University. This detection scheme and the described bench-scale analyzer offered the advantage of low-cost solution for real-time monitoring of percentile levels of H₂S with excellent signal stability. However, this previous work suffered from two major limitations, which are the relatively low sensitivity and slow response time, which mainly hindered its commercial utilization. Therefore, the aims of the present work were to enhance the detection sensitivity, decrease the response time, and develop a portable prototype of the H₂S analyzer based on the improved …

Multicellular Models Bridging Intracellular Signaling And Gene Transcription To Population Dynamics, Mohammad Aminul Islam, Satyaki Roy, Sajal K. Das, Dipak Barua
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cell signaling and gene transcription occur at faster time scales compared to cellular death, division, and evolution. Bridging these multiscale events in a model is computationally challenging. We introduce a framework for the systematic development of multiscale cell population models. Using message passing interface (MPI) parallelism, the framework creates a population model from a single-cell biochemical network model. It launches parallel simulations on a single-cell model and treats each stand-alone parallel process as a cell object. MPI mediates cell-to-cell and cell-to-environment communications in a server-client fashion. In the framework, model-specific higher level rules link the intracellular molecular events to cellular …

On The Sequential Massart Algorithm For Statistical Model Checking, Cyrille Jegourel, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Several schemes have been provided in Statistical Model Checking (SMC) for the estimation of property occurrence based on predefined confidence and absolute or relative error. Simulations might be however costly if many samples are required and the usual algorithms implemented in statistical model checkers tend to be conservative. Bayesian and rare event techniques can be used to reduce the sample size but they can not be applied without prerequisite or knowledge about the system under scrutiny. Recently, sequential algorithms based on Monte Carlo estimations and Massart bounds have been proposed to reduce the sample size while providing guarantees on error …

This dissertation addresses the empirical analysis on user-generated data from multiple online social platforms (OSPs) and modeling of latent user factors in multiple OSPs setting.
In the first part of this dissertation, we conducted cross-platform empirical studies to better understand user's social and work activities in multiple OSPs. In particular, we proposed new methodologies to analyze users' friendship maintenance and collaborative activities in multiple OSPs. We also apply the proposed methodologies on real-world OSP datasets, and the findings from our empirical studies have provided us with a better understanding on users' social and work activities which are previously not uncovered …
Comparing Groups' Affective Sentiments To Group Perceptions, Daniel Burton Shank, Alexander Burns
Comparing Groups' Affective Sentiments To Group Perceptions, Daniel Burton Shank, Alexander Burns
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Affect control theory focuses on interaction among individuals, not groups. Groups, like individual identities, vary in affective sentiments across the dimensions of evaluation, potency, and activity, but a separate literature shows the importance of the group perceptions of entitativity, homogeneity, essentialism, and agency. Therefore, to consider affect control theory's applicability to groups, we compare these principal group perceptions to affective sentiments for 64 group concepts. The results reveal that affective sentiments correlate with all four group perceptions in meaningful ways.

User identity linkage across online social networks is an emerging research topic that has attracted attention in recent years. Many user identity linkage methods have been proposed so far and most of them utilize user profile, content and network information to determine if two social media accounts belong to the same person. In most cases, user identity linkage methods are evaluated by performing some prediction tasks with the results presented using some overall accuracy measures. However, the methods are rarely compared at the individual user level where a predicted matched (or linked) pair of user identities from different online social …

Is There Space For Violence?: A Data-Driven Approach To The Exploration Of Spatial-Temporal Dimensions Of Conflict, Tin Seong Kam, Vincent Zhi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With recent increases in incidences of political violence globally, the world has now become more uncertain and less predictable. Of particular concern is the case of violence against civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between armed state or non-state actors. Classical methods of studying political violence and international relations need to be updated. Adopting the use of data analytic tools and techniques of studying big data would enable academics and policy makers to make sense of a rapidly changing world.
One-Way Fee Shifting After Summary Judgment, Cameron T. Norris
One-Way Fee Shifting After Summary Judgment, Cameron T. Norris
Vanderbilt Law Review
New, defendant-friendly amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure took effect in December 2015. Included in the amendments were several provisions designed to curb the cost of discovery. Although modest, the discovery-related provisions created more controversy than perhaps anything the rule makers have done in recent memory. Yet the new amendments were only part of what corporate defendants asked the rule makers to do. Left undone was a much more ambitious proposal: to outright flip who pays for discovery, from the party who produces the discovery to the party who requests it. To the surprise of many commentators, the …

Citrus is considered one of the most important fruit crops globally due to its contribution to food and nutritional security. However, the production of citrus has recently been in decline due to many biological, environmental, and socio-economic constraints. Amongst the biological ones, pests and diseases play a major role in threatening citrus quantity and quality. The most damaging disease in Kenya, is the African citrus greening disease (ACGD) or Huanglongbing (HLB) which is transmitted by the African citrus triozid (ACT), Trioza erytreae. HLB in Kenya is reported to have had the greatest impact on citrus production in the highlands, causing …

Water and wastewater industry leaders in Texas and throughout the United States have expressed concern over high rates of retirement eligibility and difficulties finding and attracting workers ready to fill job openings, especially for work in smaller systems. In late January 2018, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report on water workforce readiness and a bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate to establish a water infrastructure workforce development program. Concern over existing education of workers in water and demographic information projecting future workforce readiness are commonly cited as signaling a coming crisis for the water industry. An alignment …
Holistic Approach For Characterizing The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Amar Yusof Jaffar
Holistic Approach For Characterizing The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Amar Yusof Jaffar
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers are actively investigating wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with respect to node design, architecture, networking protocols, and processing algorithms. However, few researchers consider the impact of deployments on the performance of a system. As a result, an appropriate deployment simulator that estimates the performance of WSNs concerning several deployment variables is needed. This research presents a holistic deployment framework that assists decision makers in making optimum WSN deployment choices by considering the terrain of their region of interest and type of deployment. This framework employs empirical propagation models to predict the performance of the deployment in terms of connectivity, coverage, …
Limited Liability And The Known Unknown, Michael Simkovic
Limited Liability And The Known Unknown, Michael Simkovic
Duke Law Journal
Limited liability is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, limited lia-bility may help overcome investors’ risk aversion and facilitate capital formation and economic growth. On the other hand, limited liability is widely believed to contribute to excessive risk-taking and externaliza-tion of losses to the public. The externalization problem can be mitigated imperfectly through existing mechanisms such as regulation, mandatory insurance, and minimum capital requirements. These mechanisms would be more effective if information asymmetries between industry and poli-cymakers were reduced. Private businesses typically have better infor-mation about industry-specific risks than policymakers.

Supporting Diverse Customers And Prioritized Traffic In Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks, Naureen Hoque
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The already high demand for more bandwidth usage has been growing rapidly. Access network traffic is usually bursty in nature and the present traffic trend is mostly video-dominant. This motivates the need for higher transmission rates in the system. At the same time, the deployment costs and maintenance expenditures have to be reasonable. Therefore, Passive Optical Networks (PON) are considered promising next-generation access technologies. As the existing PON standards are not suitable to support future-PON services and applications, the FSAN (Full Service Access Network) group and the ITU-T (Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union) have worked on developing …
A Comprehensive Framework To Replicate Process-Level Concurrency Faults, Supat Rattanasuksun
A Comprehensive Framework To Replicate Process-Level Concurrency Faults, Supat Rattanasuksun
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Concurrency faults are one of the most damaging types of faults that can affect the dependability of today’s computer systems. Currently, concurrency faults such as process-level races, order violations, and atomicity violations represent the largest class of faults that has been reported to various Linux bug repositories. Clearly, existing approaches for testing such faults during software development processes are not adequate as these faults escape in-house testing efforts and are discovered during deployment and must be debugged.
The main reason concurrency faults are hard to test is because the conditions that allow these to occur can be difficult to replicate, …
