Zhvillimi I Sistemit Për Menaxhimin E Burimeve Njerzore Duke Përdoruar Ruby On Rails, Albane Dulaj

Theses and Dissertations

Interactions Between Spermine-Derivatized Tentacle Porphyrins And The Human Telomeric Dna G-Quadruplex, Navin C. Sabharwal , '14, Jessica Chen , '17, Joo Hyun Lee , '17, C. M. A. Gangemi, A. D'Urso, Liliya A. Yatsunyk

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

G-rich DNA sequences have the potential to fold into non-canonical G-Quadruplex (GQ) structures implicated in aging and human diseases, notably cancers. Because stabilization of GQs at telomeres and oncogene promoters may prevent cancer, there is an interest in developing small molecules that selectively target GQs. Herein, we investigate the interactions of meso-tetrakis-(4-carboxysperminephenyl)porphyrin (TCPPSpm4) and its Zn(II) derivative (ZnTCPPSpm4) with human telomeric DNA (Tel22) via UV-Vis, circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopies, resonance light scattering (RLS), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assays. UV-Vis titrations reveal binding constants of 4.7 × 10⁶ and 1.4 × 10⁷ M⁻¹ and binding stoichiometry of …

Investigating The Use Of Pictures To Enhance Reading In Early Years: A Case Study Of An Early Childhood Development Centre In Western Kenya, Damary Luvayo Kisiang'ani

Master of Education

Reading is one of the four language skills that are required for acquisition of literacy. The others are writing, listening and speaking. Studies have shown that learning to read achieved during the early years is likely to be sustained throughout the primary school years and is an important basis for successful early performance in school. It is a foundational skill and serves as the base for later competence and proficiency. Unfortunately, many children proceed to formal schooling and even finish school without having attained the expected literacy achievement for their level. This study therefore set out to investigate the use …

Physics

For a sample of ∼ 80 local (0.02 ≤ z" role="presentation">z ≤ 0.1) Seyfert-1 galaxies with high-quality long-slit Keck spectra and spatially resolved stellar-velocity dispersion (σ⋆) measurements, we study the profile of the [O iii]λ5007 Å emission line to test the validity of using its width as a surrogate for σ⋆. Such an approach has often been used in the literature, since it is difficult to measure σ⋆ for type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) due to the AGN continuum outshining the stellar-absorption lines. Fitting the [O iii] line with a single Gaussian or Gauss–Hermite …

Between Paralysis And Empowerment: Action In Mathematics For Social Justice Work, Lidia Gonzalez

Publications and Research

In this article, I focus on my experiences teaching a seminar in critical pedagogy and the math for social justice (MfSJ) work that grew from of my students’ reflections as to how they might promote change towards justice. The course was designed to acquaint students with the research literature in critical pedagogy as we explored the social, political, cultural, and economic realities around our system of public education. Yet there came a point where students questioned the value of such exploration as they genuinely considered what to do next. I, too, struggled both to support the students I was working …

A Phenomenological Study On The Role Of Teacher Mentor Programs On Educator Careers: Perspectives From Across The Career Continuum, Kim Werth

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences and perspectives of teachers from across the career continuum regarding teacher mentor programs. Thirteen teachers from different stages of the teacher career continuum took part in the study. The conceptual framework for this study focused on high teacher attrition rates among early-career teachers as a primary factor in present and projected shortages in the United States. Associated with the conceptual framework is Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory which supports the notion that new teachers learn about their profession through interaction and collaboration with their mentors, …

Science Education Trajectories: Charting The Course For Teachers, Educators, Researchers, And Policymakers, Julie Luft, Brooke A. Whitworth, Amanda Berry, Shannon Navy, Vanessa Kind

Publications

Science teacher professional development is complex. Phases in a teacher’s career necessitate different professional learning opportunities. Furthermore, knowledge bases, practices, and attributes need to be cultivated during these times. For science teachers, it is not always evident how to link professional learning opportunities progressively toward different outcomes, including being a department head, teacher leader, curriculum developer, or even master teacher. In order to spur a discussion about purposeful teacher learning, we use a theory of transformative learning to examine research pertaining to the professional learning of science teachers. The result is a conceptual framework that suggests that teachers should build …

Through interviews, focus groups, observations, and document analysis, this study found that the after-school club offers girls a space to not only learn about STEM, but also provides a space for girls to understand the gendered nature of their interactions with peers and adults in STEM classrooms. Data shows that girls …

Two-Level Surrogate-Assisted Differential Evolution Multi-Objective Optimization Of Electric Machines Using 3-D Fea, Narges Taran, Dan M. Ionel, David G. Dorrell Nov 2018

Two-Level Surrogate-Assisted Differential Evolution Multi-Objective Optimization Of Electric Machines Using 3-D Fea, Narges Taran, Dan M. Ionel, David G. Dorrell

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

A two-level surrogate-assisted optimization algorithm is proposed for electric machine design using 3-D finite-element analysis (FEA). The algorithm achieves the optima with much fewer FEA evaluations than conventional methods. It is composed of interior and exterior levels. The exploration is performed mainly in the interior level, which evaluates hundreds of designs employing affordable kriging models. Then, the most promising designs are evaluated in the exterior loop with expensive 3-D FEA models. The sample pool is constructed in a self-adjustable and dynamic way. A hybrid stopping criterion is used to avoid unnecessary expensive function evaluations.

Sensitivity Analysis Using Approximate Moment Condition Models, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár Nov 2018

Sensitivity Analysis Using Approximate Moment Condition Models, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider inference in models defined by approximate moment conditions. We show that near-optimal confidence intervals (CIs) can be formed by taking a generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, and adding and subtracting the standard error times a critical value that takes into account the potential bias from misspecification of the moment conditions. In order to optimize performance under potential misspecification, the weighting matrix for this GMM estimator takes into account this potential bias, and therefore differs from the one that is optimal under correct specification. To formally show the near-optimality of these CIs, we develop asymptotic efficiency bounds for …

Real Time Monitoring Of Asset Markets: Bubbles And Crises, Peter C.B. Phillips, Shuping Shi Nov 2018

Real Time Monitoring Of Asset Markets: Bubbles And Crises, Peter C.B. Phillips, Shuping Shi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

While each financial crisis has its own characteristics, there is now widespread recognition that crises arising from sources such as financial speculation and excessive credit creation do inflict harm on the real economy. Detecting speculative market conditions and ballooning credit risk in real time is therefore of prime importance in the complex exercises of market surveillance, risk management, and policy action. This chapter provides an R implementation of the popular real-time monitoring strategy proposed by Phillips, Shi and Yu in the International Economic Review (2015), along with a new bootstrap procedure designed to mitigate the potential impact of heteroskedasticity and …

Blood Transfusions In Preterm Infants: Changes On Perfusion Index And Intermittent Hypoxemia, Katrina T. Ibonia, Henrietta S. Bada, Philip M. Westgate, Enrique Gomez Pomar, Prasad Bhandary, Abhijit R. Patwardhan, Elie G. Abu Jawdeh

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND

Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion decreases intermittent hypoxemia (IH) events beyond the first week of life. This benefit may be related to improved perfusion to the respiratory control network. Perfusion index (PI) is a perfusion measure provided by the pulse oximeter. We hypothesized that the benefit in IH after RBC transfusion is associated with an increase in PI. In addition, we assessed the value of PI and clinical measures in predicting the effect of RBC transfusion on IH.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS

We prospectively enrolled infants less than 30 weeks' gestation age. PI and oxygen saturation (SpO2) …
