Carving Out A Space For Female Achievement In Early Modern England: The Life Of Lady Elizabeth Russell, Frankie Urrutia-Smith Nov 2018

Carving Out A Space For Female Achievement In Early Modern England: The Life Of Lady Elizabeth Russell, Frankie Urrutia-Smith

Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities (URCO) Grant Program

Lady Elizabeth Cooke Hoby Russell was an early modern English noblewoman who was able to be influential in government policy and social movements in a way that many other women of the time were not. Elizabeth was able to wield more influence in her community than most women of her time for two main reasons: she was well- educated and she had powerful family connection with the elite of English society. With these advantages at her disposal, Elizabeth was able to follow the example of her namesake the Queen to effect change in the political arena, the religious arena, and …

A Hybrid Clustering-Fusion Methodology For Land Subsidence Estimation, Narges Taravatrooy, Mohammad Reza Nikoo, Mojtaba Sadegh, Mohammad Parvinnia Nov 2018

A Hybrid Clustering-Fusion Methodology For Land Subsidence Estimation, Narges Taravatrooy, Mohammad Reza Nikoo, Mojtaba Sadegh, Mohammad Parvinnia

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A hybrid clustering-fusion methodology is developed in this study that employs Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization method, k-means method, and several soft computing (SC) models to better estimate land subsidence. Estimation of land subsidence is important in planning and management of groundwater resources to prevent associated catastrophic damages. Methods such as the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) can be used to estimate the subsidence rate, but PS-InSAR does not offer the required efficiency and accuracy in noisy pixels (obtained from remote sensing). Alternatively, a fusion-based methodology can be used to estimate subsidence rate, which offers a superior accuracy as …

Study On A New (3+1)-Dimensional Extensions Of The Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky Equation, Abdul-Majid Wazwaz

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this work we introduce new (3+1)-dimensional extensions of the Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky (KD) equation. We use the simplified Hirota’s method to study these new extensions. We derive the dispersion relation and the multiple soliton solutions for each developed model.

The Optimal Retailer’S Economic Production Quantity (Epq) Policies With Two-Level Trade Credit Under Alternate Due Date Of Payment And Limited Storage Capacity, H. M. Srivastava, Ghi-Feng Yen, An-Kuo Lee, Yi-Xiu Wu, Shy-Der Lin Nov 2018

The Optimal Retailer’S Economic Production Quantity (Epq) Policies With Two-Level Trade Credit Under Alternate Due Date Of Payment And Limited Storage Capacity, H. M. Srivastava, Ghi-Feng Yen, An-Kuo Lee, Yi-Xiu Wu, Shy-Der Lin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In recent years, many researchers investigated and developed the Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model under permissible delay in payment. There are two payment terms which are usually being used. If a customer buys one item from a retailer at time t belonging to the time-interval [0,N], then the customer will have a trade-credit period N −t and will make the payment at time N. The other payment term (alternate due date) is when a customer buys one item from a retailer at time t belonging to [0,T], the customer will have a trade-credit period N and will make the payment …

Unitary Aberrations On Pixellated Screens, Kenan Uriostegui, Kurt Bernardo Wolf Nov 2018

Unitary Aberrations On Pixellated Screens, Kenan Uriostegui, Kurt Bernardo Wolf

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The finite oscillator based on the Lie group of spin U(2) provides a model for finite one-dimensional (1D) arrays of N = 2 j +1 pixels, for j integer or half-integer which, as j → ¥, deforms to the continuous 1D model of geometric optics. Translations, linear transformations and aberrations in the latter are canonical and have their N×N unitary counterparts in the former. Since in U(N) there are only N2 independent transformations, we identify the finite counterparts of translations, linear transformations and aberrations within the finite model, applicable to the correction of aberrated images or signals on N-pixel linear …

Temperature Forecasting: A Comparison Between Parametric And Non-Parametric Models, Alaa Sheta, Ajay Katangur, Abdelkarim Baareh Nov 2018

Temperature Forecasting: A Comparison Between Parametric And Non-Parametric Models, Alaa Sheta, Ajay Katangur, Abdelkarim Baareh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The development of accurate temperature prediction models is essential for not only human life but also for agricultural, animal life, tourism, and many others. Power consumption and achieving energy efficiency in buildings also depends on temperature. Although modeling-based regression is one of the most popular approaches, it still suffers from many difficulties related to the number of available measurements, the order of the model and the non-linearity of the data. In this paper, we provide a comparison between parametric and non-parametric models for temperature forecasting. We propose three-model structures to estimate the temperature in Mumbai, the business capital of India. …

Exponentially-Modified Logistic Distribution With Application To Mining And Nutrition Data, Jimmy Reyes, Osvaldo Venegas, Hector W. Gomez Nov 2018

Exponentially-Modified Logistic Distribution With Application To Mining And Nutrition Data, Jimmy Reyes, Osvaldo Venegas, Hector W. Gomez

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this work we introduce a modification of the exponentially-modified Gaussian distribution. This new distribution is obtained by combining a logistic distribution with an exponential distribution, and is more flexible than other similar distributions. We provide a closed expression for the density function and obtain some important properties useful for making inferences, such as moment estimators and maximum likelihood estimators. By way of illustration, and using real data to show the effectiveness of the new model, we compare it with known related models, showing that the new model achieves a better fit.

Ostrowski Type Inequalities For Functions Whose Second Derivatives Are Convex Generalized., Yenny Rangel-Oliveros, Miguel Vivas-Cortez

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we introduce the notion of s−j−convex functions as generalization of convex functions. Some basic results under various conditions for the function j are investigated. Moreover, we establish Ostrowski type inequalities for twice differentiable mappings which are s−j−convex.

The Effect Of Immigration On The Persistence And Ergodicity Of A Stochastic Sis Model For Transmission Of Disease, Youness El Ansari, Ali El Myr, Lahcen Omari, Aadil Lahrouz Nov 2018

The Effect Of Immigration On The Persistence And Ergodicity Of A Stochastic Sis Model For Transmission Of Disease, Youness El Ansari, Ali El Myr, Lahcen Omari, Aadil Lahrouz

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper aims to study the dynamic behavior of a stochastic SIS (Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible) epidemic model with varying population size and constant flow of new members of whom a specified fraction is infective. First, we show that the solution is stochastically ultimately bounded and permanent. Then, we investigate the persistence in the mean of the variable I(t) (the number of infected members). Next, we use the Markov semigroups theory to investigate the ergodicity of the solution. Mainly, we show that a stationary distribution for the solution always exists for all values of the parameters in this model. Finally, Numerical simulations are …

Non-Linear Machine Learning Techniques For Multi-Label Image Data Classification, D. Senthilkumar, A. K. Reshmy, M. G. Kavitha Nov 2018

Non-Linear Machine Learning Techniques For Multi-Label Image Data Classification, D. Senthilkumar, A. K. Reshmy, M. G. Kavitha

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we propose non-linear Machine Learning Techniques (MLT) for Multi-label Image Classification (MLIC) problems. Multi-label Learning requires MLT to identify the complex non-linear relationship between the features and class labels. Also, Multi-label data degrades the performance of the classifiers and processing of this data with a large number of features is too complex while using traditional methods. Therefore, we propose two approaches namely ensemble Deep Learning Network (DLN) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) for MLIC. The experimental results show that the proposed (DLN and MARS) algorithms achieves a superior predictive performance rate of 94.77% and 81.68% respectively, …

Deep Neural Network Based Speaker Verification System Using Features From Glottal Activity Regions, P. Shanmugapriya, V. Mohan, T. Jayasankar, Y. Venkataramani Nov 2018

Deep Neural Network Based Speaker Verification System Using Features From Glottal Activity Regions, P. Shanmugapriya, V. Mohan, T. Jayasankar, Y. Venkataramani

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We propose a Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based Speaker Verification (SV) system using features derived from Glottal Activity (GA) regions. Glottal activity regions are detected through Glottal Closure Instant (GCI), Normalized Autocorrelation Peak Strength (NAPS) and Higher Order Statistics (HOS) from speech signal. For the detection of GA regions, the speech signal is represented in terms of Zero Frequency Filtered Signal (ZFFS) and Integrated Linear Predicted Residual (ILPR). Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) and Wavelet Transformed Residual Coefficients extracted from the detected GA regions are used for analysing the performance of speaker verification system based on DNN and i-vector DNN. The …

Spatial Vector Autoregressive Model With Calendar Variation For East Java Inflation And Money Supply, Eni Sumarminingsih, Setiawan Matoha, Agus Suharsono, Budi Nurani Ruchjana

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Inflation is a macroeconomic variable that can indicate the economy of a country, so it needs to be managed to a stability point. One way to control inflation is to regulate the money supply that was made by the Central Bank. This shows the relationship between inflation and money supply. In addition, inflation and money supply have space-time relationship. One character of inflation and money supply in Indonesia is the effect of Eid al Fitr on these two variables. The purpose of this study is to model the inflation and the money supply simultaneously with the effect of calendar variation …

Parallel Concatenation Of Ldpc Codes With Lte Modulation Schemes, Mohanad Alfiras, Wael A. H. Hadi, Amjad Ali Jassim

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

low-density parity checks (LDPC) codes have received significant interest for communication system applications for their performance as error correction codes. LDPC codes outperform parallel turbo codes, which are based on a convolutional encoder. This paper proposes parallel concatenation of LDPC codes of small length. The proposed method employs a summation of the estimation output technique from the LDPC decoder. The study performed simulations to evaluate the parallel concatenation of two and three irregular LDPC codes at code rates of 1/2 and 1/3. The simulations evaluated a low number of iterations about ten only for each decoder. We further compare the …

Simplified Equation For Received Power Calculation Of The Lte Signal In 2.13 Ghz., Edgar Alan Degollado-Rea, Sergio Vidal-Beltran, Jose Luis Lopez-Bonilla

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, an analysis of path loss is made using an empirical method that allows obtaining a simplified equation for the received power calculation, which depends on fewer variables than the propagation models traditionally-used in 2.13 GHz. The final part is about the simplified equations obtained for two areas of M´exico city, which can be used to generalize the estimation of losses to other areas with similar characteristics.

Optimal Control And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis For Dysentery Epidemic Model, Hailay Weldegiorgis Berhe, Oluwole Daniel Makinde, David Mwangi Theuri

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, optimal control theory is applied to a system of ordinary differential equations representing a dysentery diarrhea epidemic. Optimal control strategies are proposed to reduce the number of infected humans and the cost of interventions. The Pontryagin’s maximum principle is employed to find the necessary conditions for the existence of the optimal controls. Runge- Kutta forward-backward sweep numerical approximation method is used to solve the optimal control system. The incremental costeffectiveness analysis technique is used to determine the most cost-effective strategy. We observe that the control measure implementing sanitation and education campaign is the most efficient and cost-effective.

Design And Performance Estimation Of Efficient Approximate Carry Select Adder, V. S. Nishok, P. Poongodi, K. N. Vijeyakumar

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Carry select adder is the key circuit to achieve high-speed arithmetic operations. This paper presents the Efficient Approximation Carry Select Adder (EA-CSLA) involved in eradicating the carry 1 input path in LSB and attains a reduced amount of delay and hardware simplicity. Furthermore, this EA-CSLA utilizes an algorithmic cell split-up technique which diminishes the propagation delay in all parts of the circuit. The EA carry select adder design includes approximate full adder blocks with less gate count and reduced power consumption. This design is synthesized in Encounter-Cadence 90 nm tool up to GDSII level using Verilog language. Hardware implementation is …

Spacelike Curves In The Lightlike Cone, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgın Sager, Alireza Sedaghatdoost

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we study curves in the lightlike cone. First, we show that any curves in the lightlike cone are spacelike or lightlike, and then we characterize some curves with special cone curvature function in the 4, 5, and 6-dimensional lightlike cone. Finally, we consider the relationship between Frenet curvature functions and cone curvature functions for a spacelike curve on the lightlike cone.

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

This document is a supplement to "Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of Will Marion Cook," a 2017 document which is mounted on-line at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/musicfacpub/66/. It presupposes some familiarity with the "Chronology and Itinerary," and puts into some kind of order a number of additional research notes, principally drawing upon newspaper and genealogy databases, that amplify the earlier work in certain respects regarding the public lives of his immediate family members. This is not a finished, polished effort; it represents work in progress, complete with repetitions, missing data, and the occasional typographical error. I invite queries, amplifications, and corrections, …

Application Of A Light Switchable System In Redirecting Escherichia Coli Metabolic Fluxes, Xintong Xia Nov 2018

Application Of A Light Switchable System In Redirecting Escherichia Coli Metabolic Fluxes, Xintong Xia

Graduate Theses - Chemical Engineering

Optogenetics has gained increasing attention for enabling reversible and non-invasive control in biochemical engineering. The purpose of this project is to investigate the application of a genetically engineered light-switchable system, Cph8-OmpR, for controlling the accumulation of the useful central metabolite glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) in Escherichia coli. This could be accomplished by linking expression of an adaptor protein, SspB, which increases enzyme phosphofructokinase (Pfk) degradation, with different light intensities. Pfk is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of fructose-6-phosphate (F6P), an isomer of G6P from an equilibrium reaction, to fructose 1,6-biphosphate for downstream metabolism. This step is considered the major control point …

Characterization And Effect Of Metal Ions On The Formation Of The Thermus Thermophilus Sco Mixed Disulfide Intermediate, Liezelle C. Lopez, Nikita Mukhitov, Lindsey D. Handley, Cristina S. Hamme, Cristina R. Hofman, Lindsay Euers, Jennifer R. Mckinney, Amani D. Piers, Ellen Wadler, Laura M. Hunsicker-Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research

The Sco protein from Thermus thermophilus has previously been shown to perform a disulfide bond reduction in the CuA protein from T. thermophilus, which is a soluble protein engineered from subunit II of cytochrome ba 3 oxidase that lacks the transmembrane helix. The native cysteines on TtSco and TtCuA were mutated to serine residues to probe the reactivities of the individual cysteines. Conjugation of TNB to the remaining cysteine in TtCuA and subsequent release upon incubation with the complementary TtSco protein demonstrated the formation of the mixed disulfide intermediate. The cysteine of …

Towards Optimal Implementation Of Decentralized Currencies: How To Best Select Probabilities In An Ethereum-Type Proof-Of-Stake Protocol, Thach N. Nguyen, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2018

Towards Optimal Implementation Of Decentralized Currencies: How To Best Select Probabilities In An Ethereum-Type Proof-Of-Stake Protocol, Thach N. Nguyen, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Nowadays, most financial transactions are based on a centralized system, when all the transaction records are stored in a central location. This centralization makes the financial system vulnerable to cyber-attacks. A natural way to make the financial system more robust and less vulnerable is to switch to decentralized currencies. Such a transition will also make financial system more transparent. Historically first currency of this type -- bitcoin -- use a large amount of electric energy to mine new coins and is, thus, not scalable to the level of financial system as a whole. A more realistic and less energy-consuming scheme …

Detecting At-Risk Students: Empirical Results And Their Theoretical Explanation, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2018

Detecting At-Risk Students: Empirical Results And Their Theoretical Explanation, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In teaching, it is very important to identify, as early as possible, students who may be at risk of failure. Traditionally, two natural criteria are used for this identification: poor grades in previous classes, and poor grades on the first assignments in the current class. Our empirical results show that these criteria do not always work: sometimes a student deemed at-risk by one of these criteria consistently succeeds, and sometimes a student who is not considered at-risk frequently fails. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation of our quantitative empirical results, and we use these results to provide recommendations …

Relativistic Effects Can Be Used To Achieve A Universal Square-Root (Or Even Faster) Computation Speedup, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we show that special relativity phenomenon can be used to reduce computation time of any algorithm from T to square root of T. For this purpose, we keep computers where they are, but the whole civilization starts moving around the computer -- at an increasing speed, reaching speeds close to the speed of light. A similar square-root speedup can be achieved if we place ourselves near a growing black hole. Combining the two schemes can lead to an even faster speedup: from time T to the 4-th order root of T.

Secure Multi-Agent Quantum Communication: Towards The Most Efficient Scheme (A Pedagogical Remark), Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2018

Secure Multi-Agent Quantum Communication: Towards The Most Efficient Scheme (A Pedagogical Remark), Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many economic and financial applications, it is important to have secure communications. At present, communication security is provided mostly by RSA coding, but the emergent quantum computing can break this encoding, thus making it not secure. One way to make communications absolutely secure is to use quantum encryption. The existing schemes for quantum encryption are aimed at agent-to-agent communications; however, in practice, we often need secure multi-agent communications, where each of the agents has the ability to securely send messages to everyone else. In principle, we can repeat the agent-to-agent scheme for each pair of agents, but this requires …

The paper reports visualization of the flow of smoke over a flat surface inside of a low-speed wind tunnel. A heating plate flush mounted on the wind tunnel floor simulated a spreading line fire that produces uniform heat flux under constant wind speed condition. A paper-thin cloth was soaked with commercially available Vaseline and placed on top of the heating plate; when it is heated, it produced thick white smoke, ideal for flow visualization. Two sides and top of the wind tunnel were made of a trans- parent acrylic sheet that enabled LED and laser sheet light illumination of the …
