The Story Of Ever Diminishing Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions As Observed In The Chicago, Il Area, Gary A. Bishop, Molly J. Haugen Jan 2018

The Story Of Ever Diminishing Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions As Observed In The Chicago, Il Area, Gary A. Bishop, Molly J. Haugen

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

The University of Denver has collected on-road fuel specific vehicle emissions measurements in the Chicago area since 1989. This nearly 30 year record illustrates the large reductions in light-duty vehicle tailpipe emissions and the remarkable improvements in emissions control durability to maintain low emissions over increasing periods of time. Since 1989 fuel specific carbon monoxide (CO) emissions have been reduced by an order of magnitude and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by more than a factor of 20. Nitric oxide (NO) emissions have only been collected since 1997 but have seen reductions of 79%. This has increased the skewness of the emissions …

During 2016 and 2017 a program of field vibration measurements was made on a set of Victorian era granite lighthouse towers around the British Isles. The field tests were designed for structural identification to enable condition assessment and identification of extreme wave loads through long term monitoring. The primary test method was forced vibration, and ambient vibration measurements was used as a backup. The best operational modal analysis (OMA) results were obtained using Bayesian OMA, which provide a clear picture of the directionality of the mode shapes which appeared at very close frequencies due to the symmetry of the towers. …

Moreover, the connectivity facilitates new kinds of distributed functionalities, making the vehicle a part of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and thus an …

Automated Identification Of Digital Evidence Across Heterogeneous Data Resources, Hussam J Mohammed Jan 2018

Automated Identification Of Digital Evidence Across Heterogeneous Data Resources, Hussam J Mohammed

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Digital forensics has become an increasingly important tool in the fight against cyber and computer-assisted crime. However, with an increasing range of technologies at people’s disposal, investigators find themselves having to process and analyse many systems with large volumes of data (e.g., PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones) within a single case. Unfortunately, current digital forensic tools operate in an isolated manner, investigating systems and applications individually. The heterogeneity and volume of evidence place time constraints and a significant burden on investigators. Examples of heterogeneity include applications such as messaging (e.g., iMessenger, Viber, Snapchat, and WhatsApp), web browsers (e.g., Firefox and …

On Lowering The Error Floor Of Short-To-Medium Block Length Irregular Low Density Parity Check Codes, Umar-Faruk Abdu-Aguye Jan 2018

On Lowering The Error Floor Of Short-To-Medium Block Length Irregular Low Density Parity Check Codes, Umar-Faruk Abdu-Aguye

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Gallager proposed and developed low density parity check (LDPC) codes in the early 1960s. LDPC codes were rediscovered in the early 1990s and shown to be capacity approaching over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Subsequently, density evolution (DE) optimized symbol node degree distributions were used to significantly improve the decoding performance of short to medium length irregular LDPC codes. Currently, the short to medium length LDPC codes with the lowest error floor are DE optimized irregular LDPC codes constructed using progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm modifications which are designed to increase the approximate cycle extrinsic message degrees (ACE) …

Continuous Identity Verification In Cloud Computing Services, Burhan Mollan Salih Al-Bayati Jan 2018

Continuous Identity Verification In Cloud Computing Services, Burhan Mollan Salih Al-Bayati

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Cloud computing has become a hugely popular new paradigm for hosting and delivering services over the internet for individuals and organisations with low cost. However, security is a sensitive issue in cloud computing, as it its services remain accessible to anyone after initial authenticated login and for significant periods. This has led to an increase in the number of attacks on sensitive cus-tomer information. This research identified biometric approaches as a possible solution for security to be maintained beyond the point of entry. Specifically, behaviour profiling has been proposed and applied across various other applications in the area of Transparent …

A Developmental Model Of Trust In Humanoid Robots, Massimiliano Patacchiola Jan 2018

A Developmental Model Of Trust In Humanoid Robots, Massimiliano Patacchiola

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Trust between humans and artificial systems has recently received increased attention due to the widespread use of autonomous systems in our society. In this context trust plays a dual role. On the one hand it is necessary to build robots that are perceived as trustworthy by humans. On the other hand we need to give to those robots the ability to discriminate between reliable and unreliable informants. This thesis focused on the second problem, presenting an interdisciplinary investigation of trust, in particular a computational model based on neuroscientific and psychological assumptions. First of all, the use of Bayesian networks for …

Approximate Solutions For Ideal Dam‐Break Sediment‐Laden Flows On Uniform Slopes, Yufang Ni, Zhixian Cao, Alistair Borthwick, Qingquan Liu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractShallow water hydro‐sediment‐morphodynamic (SHSM) models have been applied increasingly widely in hydraulic engineering and geomorphological studies over the past few decades. Analytical and approximate solutions are usually sought to verify such models and therefore confirm their credibility. Dam‐break flows are often evoked because such flows normally feature shock waves and contact discontinuities that warrant refined numerical schemes to solve. While analytical and approximate solutions to clear‐water dam‐break flows have been available for some time, such solutions are rare for sediment transport in dam‐break flows. Here we aim to derive approximate solutions for ideal dam‐break sediment‐laden flows resulting from the sudden …

Quasi-Two-Layer Morphodynamic Model For Bedload-Dominated Problems: Bed Slope-Induced Morphological Diffusion, Sergio Maldonado, Alistair G.L. Borthwick Jan 2018

Quasi-Two-Layer Morphodynamic Model For Bedload-Dominated Problems: Bed Slope-Induced Morphological Diffusion, Sergio Maldonado, Alistair G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We derive a two-layer depth-averaged model of sediment transport and morphological evolution for application to bedload-dominated problems. The near-bed transport region is represented by the lower (bedload) layer which has an arbitrarily constant, vanishing thickness (of approx. 10 times the sediment particle diameter), and whose average sediment concentration is free to vary. Sediment is allowed to enter the upper layer, and hence the total load may also be simulated, provided that concentrations of suspended sediment remain low. The model conforms with established theories of bedload, and is validated satisfactorily against empirical expressions for sediment transport rates and the morphodynamic experiment …

Numerical Modelling Of Extreme Waves: The Role Of Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions, Thomas Vyzikas Jan 2018

Numerical Modelling Of Extreme Waves: The Role Of Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions, Thomas Vyzikas

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The real monsters of the ocean, extreme waves, haunted mariners since the early days of human activities in the sea. Despite having caused numerous accidents and casualties, their systematic study began only in 2000s. Many mechanisms have been proposed to simulate these rare but catastrophic events, with the most prominent being wave focusing. This is connected to the NewWave theory, which has been used extensively in experimental and numerical modelling. However, the majority of the studies fail to capture the distinguishing characteristics of extreme waves, due to the inherent high nonlinearity of the problem and shortcomings of the modelling practice, …

Research Methodology In Business: A Starter’S Guide, Mohamed Af Ragab, Amr Arisha

Articles

A cardinal requisite of successful research lies in the proper selection of the research methodology applied to achieve research objectives using the available resources. In addition to acquiring sufficient knowledge of their specific research topic, researchers are urged to develop good understanding of alternative research methodologies at their disposal to be able to identify the best-suited methods to address the research question. This, however, often poses a challenge for novice researchers who face difficulty in grasping the vast methodology landscape and its encompassing array of debates. The purpose of this paper is to provide new researchers with a comprehensive overview …

The Equivocation Of Codes, Mark Schofield Jan 2018

The Equivocation Of Codes, Mark Schofield

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

EQUIVOCATION was introduced by Shannon in the late 1940’s in seminal papers that kick-started the whole field of information theory. Much ground has been covered on equivocation’s counterpart, channel capacity and in particular, its bounds. However, less work has been carried out on the evaluation of the equivocation of a code transmitted across a channel. The aim of the work covered in this thesis was to use a probabilistic approach to investigate and compare the equivocation of various codes across a range of channels. The probability and entropy of each output, given each input, can be used to calculate the …

Advances In Numerical Techniques For Modelling Water Flows, Jian G. Zhou, Alistair Borthwick, Haifei Liu, Ling Qian

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This special issue aims to present recent advances in approaches to modelling water flows and their applications in engineering. Water occupies about 71% of the earth’s surface area and is essential for the survival of human beings, but natural disasters pose substantial societal, environmental, and economic hazards. Important and extremely challenging research topics arise from the need to understand water flows and develop mitigation measures against potential adverse impacts, such as urban flooding and coastal storm surge inundation.

Understanding Market Inefficiency In The East Asian Region During Times Of Crisis, Lucia Morales, Bernadette Andreosso-O’Callaghan Jan 2018

Understanding Market Inefficiency In The East Asian Region During Times Of Crisis, Lucia Morales, Bernadette Andreosso-O’Callaghan

Articles

The study of financial market efficiency has important implications in terms of global macroeconomic stability. The case of six selected East Asian stock markets (China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea) during the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) and Global Financial Crisis (GFC) is analysed here using a battery of well-known econometric techniques that starts with traditional unit root testing for random walk behaviour. The six countries were selected on the basis of market capitalization to offer insights into the behaviour of the most relevant markets in the region. The results show that during both crises, these markets exhibited …

Mathematics For Engineering Students In The 'Dual System': Assistance In Study Start-Up And Conduct, Katja Susanne Derr Jan 2018

Mathematics For Engineering Students In The 'Dual System': Assistance In Study Start-Up And Conduct, Katja Susanne Derr

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

One major characteristic of the transition from secondary to tertiary education is the high heterogeneity of students’ knowledge. In STEM-programmes, knowledge gaps in basic mathematics are considered one risk factor regarding graduation. One approach to this problem is the provision of preparatory courses in mathematics. The purpose of this mixed methods evaluation study was to identify factors supporting “at risk” students’ successful pre-course participation and transition to university. This issue was addressed using quantitative and qualitative evaluations carried out with six cohorts of engineering students at Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Mannheim. Using the theory of self-regulated learning as a theoretical …
