Thermo-optic tuning of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a nematic liquid crystal-filled thin-walled capillary tube resonator is reported. WGMs were excited by the evanescent field from a tapered optical fiber. Tapered optical fiber fabrication and reduction of wall thickness of the capillary tube was carried out by a ceramic micro-heater brushing technique. A simple and robust packaging technique is demonstrated to ensure stable and repeatable operation of the device. Tunability of WGMs with temperature was demonstrated with a sensitivity of 267.5 ± 2.5 pm/°C. The demonstrated thermo-optic method for WGMs tuning is potentially useful for many tunable photonic devices and …

An Energy-Based Approach To Assess And Predict Erosive Airfoil Defouling, Arthur Rudek, Thomas-Alexander Zitzmann, Geral Russ, Barry Duignan
Articles
A dynamic indentation experiment is presented for assessment of the adhesive behavior of a range of coatings in erosive defouling of commercial aircraft engines using CO2 dry-ice. A series of experiments is presented in which particles made from a reference material (polyoxymethylene – POM) and from CO2 dry-ice are made to impact compressor airfoils under a range of impact angle and velocity conditions. The airfoils investigated are coated with an indicator material (PTFE), which is typically used to visualise the defouling effect in large scale compressor defouling experiments. In addition, fouled compressor airfoils taken from service and coated with a …

We introduce and study several homological notions which generalise the discrete derived categories of D. Vossieck. As an application, we show that Vossieck discrete algebras have this property with respect to all bounded t-structures. We give many examples of triangulated categories regarding these notions.

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© 2018 Wiley Publishing Ltd. Appropriate S-N fatigue design curves for friction stir welded joints in aluminium alloys are currently not specified in design codes and standards. The present paper is intended to assist in enabling standardised fatigue design for such joints, through a comprehensive statistical analysis of more than 500 individual sets of data gathered from published literature. These data are used to establish the usual design fatigue curves for welds that give a 97.7% survival probability with 95% confidence. Experimental fatigue data represent defect-free butt joints and include both flat plate and tubular joints between similar aluminium alloys …

Investigation Of Effective Stress Intensity Factors During Overload Fatigue Cycles Using Photoelastic And Dic Techniques, Jm Vasco-Olmo, B Yang, Mn James, Fa Díaz
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© 2018 Elsevier Ltd This work uses DIC and photoelastic techniques to investigate the effect of single overload cycles applied during constant amplitude fatigue. Effective values of the range of stress intensity factor were calculated using the CJP model of crack tip stress and displacement fields, as this model considers both wake contact and compatibility-induced influences on the applied elastic field arising from the plastic enclave generated around a fatigue crack. Values of the effective stress intensity factor are related to the observed crack growth acceleration and retardation. In addition, the paper compares the CJP results with those obtained using …

Residual Crashworthiness Of Cfrp Structures With Pre-Impact Damage – An Experimental And Numerical Study, Dongdong Chen, Guangyong Sun, Maozhou Meng, G Li, Q Li
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This study investigated the effect of transverse pre-impact damage on the load bearing capacity and failure behavior of square carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) tubes for axial crushing. The CFRP tubes were impacted transversely in different levels of impact energies to generate initial damage, and then the specimens were further crushed axially to evaluate the relation between transverse impact energies/positions and the residual axial crashworthiness. A finite element (FE) model was also developed to simulate the complex damage behavior of the CFRP tubes under these two different loading processes, based upon the continuum damage model (CDM) with user-defined material subroutine …

Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Curve Based On The Cjp Model And Its Application Method, B Yang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Fatigue crack growth rate tests of commercial pure titanium specimens with 5 different height-width ratios of CT specimens using the digital imagine correlation technique are carried out. The traditional stress intensity factor range, ?K, and the new definition of the stress intensity factor range, ?KCJP, which is under the theory of the CJP model, are utilized in the analysis of the test data. Both the da/dN-?K curve and the da/dN-?KCJP curve reflect the distribution of the test data effectively and show good fitting effects. Compared to the traditional ?K, the ?KCJP is obtained directly from the displacement fields near the …

Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Smart Composites For Sensing Freezing Temperature And Deicing By Self-Heating, S Jang, Y-L Park
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer composites were fabricated by high shear mixing. The microstructure and the electrical properties of the carbon nanotube–polymer composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and electrical resistance measurement. We found that the carbon nanotube composites showed high electrical conductivity (1.5 S m-1) at 7.0 wt% of carbon nanotubes, and the increase in thickness enhanced the electrical conductivity of the composites. The multifunctional properties of the carbon nanotube composites were also investigated for use in sensing the freezing temperature and also in deicing by self-heating. The results showed that the carbon nanotube–polymer composites had high temperature sensitivity in …

The ageing of the population deeply impacts on the social costs relative to health care. The use of modern technologies is one of the most promising approaches, under current study, to reduce such impact. In this demonstration, we propose a framework that can be employed for at-home assessment of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It is composed by a set of digitalized cognitive tests, developed from their paper-and-pencil counterparts, and by a Virtual Caregiver, which oversees the test execution and provides instructions.

IntroductionPeople with experience of the criminal justice system typically have worse physical and mental health, lower levels of mental well-being and have less healthy lifestyles than the general population. Health trainers have worked with offenders in the community to provide support for lifestyle change, enhance mental well-being and signpost to appropriate services. There has been no rigorous evaluation of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of providing such community support. This study aims to determine the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a randomised trial and delivering a health trainer intervention to people receiving community supervision in the UK.Methods and analysisA multicentre, parallel, …

Backreaction On Background Fields: A Coherent State Approach, A Ilderton, D Seipt
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
There are many situations in which a strong electromagnetic field may be approximated as a fixed background. Going beyond this approximation, i.e. accounting for the back-reaction of quantum process on the field, is however challenging. Here we develop an approach to this problem which is a straightforward extension of background field methods. The approach follows from the observation that scattering in an on-shell background is equivalent to scattering between coherent states; we show that by deforming these states one can model back-reaction. Focussing on intense laser-matter interactions, we provide examples which model beam depletion and, furthermore, introduce an extremisation principle …
Demonstration And Damnation: William Blake's Eternal Death Of Unbelief, Joshua Schouten De Jel
Demonstration And Damnation: William Blake's Eternal Death Of Unbelief, Joshua Schouten De Jel
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
In Blake’s mythopoeia, as well as his personal eschatology, belief is the source of life itself; all creative acts, all visionary episodes, stem from an individual’s belief. “Eternal Death,” which is the cycle of Generation, is the result of unbelief. Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, and John Locke were, for Blake, the triumvirate of culpable votaries for the propagation of rational reductionism which had led to the reification of “Natural Religion” in the form of Deism and Rational Dissent in England and, with the addition of Rousseau and Voltaire, of the apotheosis in France of the Cult of Reason. The French …

The Nature Of Twitter Trending Topics Analysing Intrinsic Factors Associated With The Twitter Ecosystem, Ma Palomino, Q Ribac, G Masala
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We are inundated with data—companies such as Twitter deal with petabytes of information on a daily basis. However, some users, especially the new ones, often find it difficult to cope with the overwhelming and disorganised deluge of information. Scientists have already worked out ways to identify Twitter trending topics, as a means to index information and make sense of it. However, we know little about the impact on trending topics of various intrinsic factors associated with the Twitter ecosystem. For example, anecdotal evidence suggests that trending topics are characterised by highly polarised tweets, or that large audiences typically host the …

From Structure To Activity: Using Centrality Measures To Predict Neuronal Activity, Jack Mc Kay Fletcher, Thomas Wennekers
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
It is clear that the topological structure of a neural network somehow determines the activity of the neurons within it. In the present work, we ask to what extent it is possible to examine the structural features of a network and learn something about its activity? Specifically, we consider how the centrality (the importance of a node in a network) of a neuron correlates with its firing rate. To investigate, we apply an array of centrality measures, including In-Degree, Closeness, Betweenness, Eigenvector, Katz, PageRank, Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search (HITS) and NeuronRank to Leaky-Integrate and Fire neural networks with different connectivity schemes. …

Update On Su(2) Gauge Theory With NF = 2 Fundamental Flavours., Vincent Drach, Tadeusz Janowski, Claudio Pica
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We present a non perturbative study of SU(2) gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavours. This theory provides a minimal template which is ideal for a wide class of Standard Model extensions featuring novel strong dynamics, such as a minimal realization of composite Higgs models. We present an update on the status of the meson spectrum and decay constants based on increased statistics on our existing ensembles and the inclusion of new ensembles with lighter pion masses, resulting in a more reliable chiral extrapolation. In recent years, it has been suggested that social robots have potential as tutors and educators for both children and adults. While robots have been shown to be effective in teaching knowledge and skill-based topics, we wish to explore how social robots can be used to tutor a second language to young children. As language learning relies on situated, grounded and social learning, in which interaction and repeated practice are central, social robots hold promise as educational tools for supporting second language learning. This paper surveys the developmental psychology of second language learning and suggests an agenda to study how …

Development And Test Of An Open Source Autonomous Sailing Robot With Accessibility, Generality And Extendability, U Vautier, J Wan, M Dai, C Viel, R Hone
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper introduces the design of an open source autonomous sailing robot with emphasis on its accessibility, generality and extendability. To meet such requirements, a generic control box connecting an Arduino board and a Raspberry Pi computer was tailor-made so as to host the robot operating system (ROS) and to interact with versatile sensors and actuators. The goal of such a project is to create an accessible, generic and expendable platform of autonomous sailboats for wider education and research publicity and engagement. Autonomous sailing test for the developed sailboat was also conducted to validate its design.

Comparative Study Of Stirrup-Confined Circular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Stub Columns Under Axial Loading, Fa Xing Ding, Jiang Zhu, Shan Shan Cheng, Xuemei Liu
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd This paper presents a comparative study of circular concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns with three different stirrup confinement types: bidirectional stirrups, loop stirrups and orthogonal stirrups. Axial compression tests have been carried out aiming at investigating the effects of the stirrup form and volume-stirrup ratio on the mechanical behavior of the stirrup-confined circular CFT stub columns, and ABAQUS was used to carry out the 3D numerical modelling. Radial stress of the core concrete and the composite action among the steel tube, stirrups and the core concrete have been investigated. It is found that the confinement provided …
