Numerical Modelling Of Extreme Waves: The Role Of Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions, Thomas Vyzikas Jan 2018

Numerical Modelling Of Extreme Waves: The Role Of Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions, Thomas Vyzikas

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The real monsters of the ocean, extreme waves, haunted mariners since the early days of human activities in the sea. Despite having caused numerous accidents and casualties, their systematic study began only in 2000s. Many mechanisms have been proposed to simulate these rare but catastrophic events, with the most prominent being wave focusing. This is connected to the NewWave theory, which has been used extensively in experimental and numerical modelling. However, the majority of the studies fail to capture the distinguishing characteristics of extreme waves, due to the inherent high nonlinearity of the problem and shortcomings of the modelling practice, …

Research Methodology In Business: A Starter’S Guide, Mohamed Af Ragab, Amr Arisha

Articles

A cardinal requisite of successful research lies in the proper selection of the research methodology applied to achieve research objectives using the available resources. In addition to acquiring sufficient knowledge of their specific research topic, researchers are urged to develop good understanding of alternative research methodologies at their disposal to be able to identify the best-suited methods to address the research question. This, however, often poses a challenge for novice researchers who face difficulty in grasping the vast methodology landscape and its encompassing array of debates. The purpose of this paper is to provide new researchers with a comprehensive overview …

The Equivocation Of Codes, Mark Schofield Jan 2018

The Equivocation Of Codes, Mark Schofield

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

EQUIVOCATION was introduced by Shannon in the late 1940’s in seminal papers that kick-started the whole field of information theory. Much ground has been covered on equivocation’s counterpart, channel capacity and in particular, its bounds. However, less work has been carried out on the evaluation of the equivocation of a code transmitted across a channel. The aim of the work covered in this thesis was to use a probabilistic approach to investigate and compare the equivocation of various codes across a range of channels. The probability and entropy of each output, given each input, can be used to calculate the …

Understanding Market Inefficiency In The East Asian Region During Times Of Crisis, Lucia Morales, Bernadette Andreosso-O’Callaghan

Articles

The study of financial market efficiency has important implications in terms of global macroeconomic stability. The case of six selected East Asian stock markets (China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea) during the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) and Global Financial Crisis (GFC) is analysed here using a battery of well-known econometric techniques that starts with traditional unit root testing for random walk behaviour. The six countries were selected on the basis of market capitalization to offer insights into the behaviour of the most relevant markets in the region. The results show that during both crises, these markets exhibited …

Mathematics For Engineering Students In The 'Dual System': Assistance In Study Start-Up And Conduct, Katja Susanne Derr

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

One major characteristic of the transition from secondary to tertiary education is the high heterogeneity of students’ knowledge. In STEM-programmes, knowledge gaps in basic mathematics are considered one risk factor regarding graduation. One approach to this problem is the provision of preparatory courses in mathematics. The purpose of this mixed methods evaluation study was to identify factors supporting “at risk” students’ successful pre-course participation and transition to university. This issue was addressed using quantitative and qualitative evaluations carried out with six cohorts of engineering students at Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Mannheim. Using the theory of self-regulated learning as a theoretical …

Green Networking: Analyses Of Power Consumption Of Real And Complex Ifft/Fft Used In Next-Generation Networks And Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, Sameer Sami Hassan Al-Obaidi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a promising technology for the Next Generation Networks. This technique was selected because of the flexibility for the various parameters, high spectral efficiency, and immunity to ISI. The OFDM technique suffers from significant digital signal processing, especially inside the Inverse/ Fast Fourier Transform IFFT/FFT. This part is used to perform the orthogonality/De-orthogonality between the subcarriers which the important part of the OFDM system. Therefore, it is important to understand the parameter effects on the increase or to decrease the FPGA power consumption for the IFFT/FFT. This thesis is focusing on the FPGA power consumption …

Teaching Robots Social Autonomy From In Situ Human Supervision, Emmanuel Senft Jan 2018

Teaching Robots Social Autonomy From In Situ Human Supervision, Emmanuel Senft

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Traditionally the behaviour of social robots has been programmed. However, increasingly there has been a focus on letting robots learn their behaviour to some extent from example or through trial and error. This on the one hand excludes the need for programming, but also allows the robot to adapt to circumstances not foreseen at the time of programming. One such occasion is when the user wants to tailor or fully specify the robot’s behaviour. The engineer often has limited knowledge of what the user wants or what the deployment circumstances specifically require. Instead, the user does know what is expected …

Ergodicity Of The Llr Method For The Density Of States, Guido Cossu, Biagio Lucini, Roberto Pellegrini, Antonio Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The LLR method is a novel algorithm that enables us to evaluate the density of states in lattice gauge theory. We present our study of the ergodicity properties of the LLR algorithm for the model of Yang Mills SU(3). We show that the use of the replica exchange method alleviates significantly the topological freeze-out that severely affects other algorithms.

Tsunami Generation By Combined Fault Rupture And Landsliding, Del Postigo Prieto N Perez, A Raby, Sj Boulton, C Whittaker

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Tsunami generation and propagation mechanisms should be clearly understood in order to inform predictive models and improve coastal community preparedness. Experimental results, supported by mathematical models, could potentially provide valuable input data for standard predictive models of tsunami generation and propagation. A unique set-up has been developed to reproduce a dual-source tsunami generation mechanism. The test-rig replicates a two-dimensional underwater fault rupture followed by a submarine landslide. The set-up was placed in a 20m flume of the COAST laboratory at Plymouth University. The aim of the experiments is to provide quality data for developing a parametrization of the initial conditions …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The autonomous landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is still an open problem. Previous work focused on the use of hand-crafted geometric features and sensor-data fusion for identifying a fiducial marker and guide the UAV toward it. In this article we propose a method based on deep reinforcement learning that only requires low-resolution images coming from a down looking camera in order to drive the vehicle. The proposed approach is based on a hierarchy of Deep Q-Networks (DQNs) that are used as high-end control policy for the navigation in different phases. We implemented various technical solutions, such as the …

Bayesian Hierarchical Models For Linear Networks, Zainab A A Al-Kaabawi Jan 2018

Bayesian Hierarchical Models For Linear Networks, Zainab A A Al-Kaabawi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A motorway network is handled as a linear network. The purpose of this study is to highlight dangerous motorways via estimating the intensity of accidents and study its pattern across the UK motorway network. Two mechanisms have been adopted to achieve this aim. The first, the motorway-specific intensity is estimated by modelling the point pattern of the accident data using a homogeneous Poisson process. The homogeneous Poisson process is used to model all intensities but heterogeneity across motorways is incorporated using two-level hierarchical models. The data structure is multilevel since each motorway consists of junctions that are joined by grouped …
