Impacts Of 4r Nitrogen Management And Water Optimization On Soil Health, Kamaldeep Kamaldeep Aug 2025

Impacts Of 4r Nitrogen Management And Water Optimization On Soil Health, Kamaldeep Kamaldeep

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Farmers in Utah and Idaho are facing growing challenges due to high fertilizer costs, limited irrigation water, and pressure to improve long-term soil health. To better understand current practices and grower attitudes, a survey was conducted in 2020 targeting 5,000 producers of small grains, corn, and potatoes. Although the response rate was low, 146 growers representing over 25,000 hectares of cropland participated. Survey results showed that most growers are open to improving nitrogen and irrigation practices and care about their soil health, even if not all are fully using 4R or precision agriculture methods.

This thesis includes two field studies …

Setting Salinity Water-Quality Standards Protective Of Aquatic Life: Insights From Analyses Of The Effects Of Salinity On Stream Insects, Katlyn M. Gardner Aug 2025

Setting Salinity Water-Quality Standards Protective Of Aquatic Life: Insights From Analyses Of The Effects Of Salinity On Stream Insects, Katlyn M. Gardner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Freshwater ecosystems are becoming saltier due to human activities like agriculture, urbanization, and resource extraction. This change in salinity is important because we know very little of how stream salinity affects aquatic insects at natural concentrations, much less at elevated concentrations. Increases in salinity may harm aquatic macroinvertebrates, which play important roles in stream food webs and are widely used as indicators of ecosystem health. Understanding how salinity affects aquatic insect growth, survival, and distribution is critical for developing effective criteria protective of aquatic life, but existing methods often rely on field surveys where multiple environmental factors covary, making it …

Temperature Effects On Fruit Doubling And Bloom Prediction In Tart Cherry, Josette M. Moon Aug 2025

Temperature Effects On Fruit Doubling And Bloom Prediction In Tart Cherry, Josette M. Moon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) is a key horticultural crop in Utah. Extreme summer heat and cold weather in late spring are challenges to tart cherry production causing economic losses. These problematic weather conditions are influenced by the local landscape and are exacerbated by changing climate. This research explores (1) the impact of summer heat stress on fruit deformities, and (2) the accuracy of temperature-based predictions of spring bud development. High temperatures and water stress after harvest are known to cause a deformity known as twin or double fruits, resulting in unmarketable fruit. This disorder has been studied in …

Out Of Core And Adaptive Image Blending Approach For Large Scale Image Mosaics, Marcus Quincy Aug 2025

Out Of Core And Adaptive Image Blending Approach For Large Scale Image Mosaics, Marcus Quincy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

When creating large stitched images, like those used in maps made from aerial photos, it’s important to make sure the seams between individual pictures aren’t visible. This process, known as color blending, helps smooth out differences in lighting or weather across the images. But blending very large images, such as those made from many high-resolution aerial photos, can require huge amounts of memory, making it hard to do on a typical computer.

In this work, we developed a method that breaks the problem into smaller pieces, so only a small part of the image needs to be worked on at …

Distal Impact Of Learning Trajectories On Motivational Factors In Second Language Acquisition Of Adult English Learners, Feng Zhang Aug 2025

Distal Impact Of Learning Trajectories On Motivational Factors In Second Language Acquisition Of Adult English Learners, Feng Zhang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Learning a foreign language is a long-term process sustained by learners’ motivation, self-efficacy, and self-regulation. While prior research has established that past performance influences these motivational factors, overlooking the impact of past performance on current motivational constructs. This dissertation explores how past learning performance impact current motivational factors. Using a person-centered approach, three subgroups were identified as latent learning profiles within the sample population based on their performance features: the high-performing early peak profile, the stable profile, and the rising profile. Regression models were conducted to evaluate the extent to which latent learning profiles predicted motivational variables. The results showed …

The Socioecology Of Indigenous Archaeological Maize In The Uinta Basin, Utah, Sara Saouma Aug 2025

The Socioecology Of Indigenous Archaeological Maize In The Uinta Basin, Utah, Sara Saouma

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This thesis investigates the phenotypic variability of maize (Zea mays spp.) from archaeological sites located in the Uinta Basin, Utah. Maize was first introduced to the American Southwest around 5,000 years ago following its migration via trade routes from its native region of southern Mexico (Vint 2017). The adaptation of maize to the arid and temperate conditions of the American Southwest and Mexico triggered significant phenotypic change resulting from human and environmental selection pressures. This thesis focuses on the analysis of uncharred maize cobs from seven archaeological sites in the Uinta Basin. The analysis includes 70 corn cobs—most …

Understanding Hydroclimate In The Contiguous United States: Roles Of Temperature Vs Precipitation And Subtropical Pacific Warming, Grace Esenam Affram Aug 2025

Understanding Hydroclimate In The Contiguous United States: Roles Of Temperature Vs Precipitation And Subtropical Pacific Warming, Grace Esenam Affram

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This study investigates the physical drivers and mechanisms of hydroclimate variability across the Contiguous United States (U.S.), using a combination of observable data, reanalysis data, land modeling, and coupled climate model experiments. One of the major findings is that the historic 2021 drought event across the Western U.S. was primarily driven by a severe lack of precipitation rather than increased temperatures. The study further finds that anthropogenic forcing has substantially increased the risk of this extreme drought by approximately 26 times relative to a world without the influence.

Additionally, the study reveals that the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) characterized by …

Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi Aug 2025

Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Rocks near the Earth's surface (less than 5 kilometers deep) often break and grind against one another to create crushed rock materials known as fault gouge. These fault gouges are filled with fragmented particles and broken rocks, which vary in grain size over time and space due to repeated earthquakes. This variation in grain size distribution along fault gouge can affect the strength of the fault, how it slips during an earthquake and how it 'heals' or recovers strength between earthquakes. Further, fault gouges often contain water from underground sources, which can influence how they slip. Previous studies have examined …

Balancing Native Wetland Types And Ecosystem Function Conservation In The Face Of An Aggressive Plant Invader, Aubin A. Douglas Aug 2025

Balancing Native Wetland Types And Ecosystem Function Conservation In The Face Of An Aggressive Plant Invader, Aubin A. Douglas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Wetlands provide a multitude of ecosystem services that are important to people including water filtration, flood attenuation, carbon sequestration, and recreational opportunities such as birding and hunting. Wetland plants support these services by performing important underlying ecological processes called ecosystem functions which include removing heavy metals from water and providing habitat for migratory birds. The provisioning of these functions varies through space and time, by vegetation type, and via impacts from other factors like climate and management actions. Wetland managers are responsible for maintaining these functions and services within their management complexes to align with their agency’s mandates. Unfortunately, managers …

A Value Sensitive Design Approach To Reimagining Parental Control Apps, Prakriti Dumaru

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Parental control apps are often used by families to regulate children's device usage and keep them safe online. However, existing tools focus on monitoring and restricting children, which can lead to tension and mistrust within families. This research takes a new approach by exploring how parental control apps can be redesigned to support positive family values, like encouraging open communication between parents and children and helping children self-regulate their behaviors. Through four in-depth studies, this dissertation looks at how these values play out in different real-life situations. It includes families with children on the autism spectrum, divorced households where parents …

A Multi-Modal Method For Synthetic Data Generation In Social Network Analysis, Hortencia Josefina Hernandez Aug 2025

A Multi-Modal Method For Synthetic Data Generation In Social Network Analysis, Hortencia Josefina Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Social network analysis (SNA) research is often rife with data collection pitfalls, frequently leading to incomplete and missing data. With the growing use of SNA-based research, researchers must address the challenge of missing data and synthetic data generation in these settings. Missing data occurs due to longitudinal non-response or lack of response to sensitive or difficult-to-answer questions. Synthetic data generation in SNA settings addresses the lack of representation that is often present in large-scale SNA studies. This dissertation investigates synthetic data generation methods to address these challenges and develops a novel algorithm that leverages information from multi-modal data, e.g., databases …

Decoding Anisotropic Porous Medium: A Synergy Of Lattice Boltzmann Modelling And Operator Learning To Predict Permeability As A Function Of Orientation, Soumya Shouvik Bhattacharjee

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Understanding the directional properties of porous media is essential for accurately predicting flow behavior, reactive transport, and fluid-solid interactions in systems ranging from geothermal reservoirs to energy storage devices and biological tissues. Directional variations in permeability - reflecting a medium's response to flow at different angular orientations - are particularly important for complex, inherently anisotropic geometries. In this study, we employ a Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) model to calculate directional permeabilities from porous media images subjected to varying flow inlet angles. Three classes of porous media were investigated: (1) synthetic media with circular grains, serving as isotropic baselines; (2) synthetic media …

Terrane Accretion In The Trollheimen And Dovrefjell Regions Of The Scandinavian Caledonides, Norway, Stephanie Georgevich Aug 2025

Terrane Accretion In The Trollheimen And Dovrefjell Regions Of The Scandinavian Caledonides, Norway, Stephanie Georgevich

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Following closure of the Iapetus Ocean, the paleocontinents of Laurentia and Baltica collided to form the Caledonian Orogeny. During this closure and subsequent collision, island arc terranes and microcontinents were accreted and subducted underneath the Norwegian continental margin. These terranes are preserved in central Norway, specifically in the Dovrefjell and Trollheimen mountain ranges. The order in which these terranes accreted to the continent and when this occurred is not well understood. To determine this stacking order, I will be using P-T path modeling, U-Pb zircon dating, and structural position. Knowing the degree, progression, and geologic age of metamorphism, and tectonostratigraphic …

Study On Self-Interaction Errors In Molecular Properties And Magnetic Behaviour Of 2d Materials Under External Stimuli Using Density Functional Theory, Prakash Mishra Aug 2025

Study On Self-Interaction Errors In Molecular Properties And Magnetic Behaviour Of 2d Materials Under External Stimuli Using Density Functional Theory, Prakash Mishra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density Functional Theory (DFT) has established itself as a practical and versatile method for efficiently studying the properties of materials of solids and molecules. Despite being exact in principle, in practice, DFT calculations rely on an approximation for the exchange-correlation energy functional of the electron density. This results in an erroneous interaction of the electron with itself, known as the self-interaction error (SIE). It arises from the fact that the exchange self-interaction does not exactly cancel out the Coulomb self-interaction. Due to this error, the approximate one-electron potential decays exponentially in the asymptotic region rather than exhibiting the correct ?1 …

Studies In Number Theory: Reciprocity Laws And Fundamental Domains, C. Xavier Parent Aug 2025

Studies In Number Theory: Reciprocity Laws And Fundamental Domains, C. Xavier Parent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This thesis consists of two sections. The first section is an introductory survey of number theory discussing the reciprocity laws with a focus on accessibility. Number Theory has always been a fundamental area of mathematical study, with Gauss calling it “the queen of mathematics”. The reciprocity laws are a classical set of results from number theory which have driven number theory for quite a long time. Unfortunately, these results, while important, have always been very inaccessible to undergraduate students, making it hard to start studying the field. This survey attempts to help bridge that gap, giving a resource for novices …

Investigating Temporally Dynamic Models Of Choice In Rats And Bumblebees, Jack Van Allsburg Aug 2025

Investigating Temporally Dynamic Models Of Choice In Rats And Bumblebees, Jack Van Allsburg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Temporally dynamic models of choice simulate how animals use past experience to make optimal decisions in variable environments. Chapter 1 briefly reviews a series of such modeling approaches and their mathematical properties. Extension of these models to longer experiments (more than 48 hours) designed to produce spontaneous recovery of choice (a behavioral phenomenon implicated in relapse) previously led to results not described well by current models. Chapter 2 comprises an empirical investigation of different explanations for these inconsistent results using rats, evaluating the effect of different test delays on preference following varied reward conditions. The results of the first two …

Geochemical And Stratigraphic Characterization Of The Morrison Formation And Cedar Mountain Formation Contact In The Island Park Quadrangle, Uintah County, Utah, Emily Mcdermott Aug 2025

Geochemical And Stratigraphic Characterization Of The Morrison Formation And Cedar Mountain Formation Contact In The Island Park Quadrangle, Uintah County, Utah, Emily Mcdermott

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation and Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation are among the richest sources of dinosaur fossils. Despite a 24-million-year gap in time (the Jurassic–Cretaceous unconformity), these formations are difficult to distinguish due to their similar rock types and colors. In Utah's Island Park quadrangle (IPQ), these formations are not separated on existing geological maps. This study focuses on identifying and understanding the formational boundary between them using field observations, stable isotope analysis, clay mineralogy, and chemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

Unlike other areas where a conglomerate layer marks the boundary, the …

This dissertation brings the power of graph thinking to three key challenges in modern AI, making complex data more transparent, generative design more controllable, and scholarly exploration more intuitive. First, we introduce Local CorEx, a new machine learning technique that uncovers hidden relationships among variables, making it easier to understand complex datasets without heavy computation. Next, we show how to guide the creation of new molecules by viewing the generation process itself as a walk through a "state graph," letting researchers steer outcomes toward desired chemical properties—without any extra model training. Finally, we deliver an open-source toolkit that builds interactive …

Gender-Diverse Individuals' Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Aliya Halterman Aug 2025

Gender-Diverse Individuals' Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Aliya Halterman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Many factors influence how well someone learns and achieve in school and daily living, with motivation being especially important. One key part of motivation is something called self-efficacy, which refers to how much someone believes they can successfully do a specific task (Bandura, 1986; 1997). Research has shown that self-efficacy plays a major role in how well people do, and the quality of their efforts (Pintrich & Schrauben, 1992; Weinstein & Mayer, 1986; Zimmermann, 2000). Additionally, mathematics skills are tied to better outcomes in school, careers, and in daily life. Mathematics also has also had a complex history when it …

High-Frequency Seismic Noise In Desert Environments, Alexis Hernandez Aug 2025

High-Frequency Seismic Noise In Desert Environments, Alexis Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the generation and modulation of ambient seismic noise in arid environments, with a focus on aeolian processes such as saltation, wind shear, and precipitation events. Using a dense array of three-component seismic nodes co-located with meteorological sensors and a novel particle transport instrument (SANTRI), high-frequency seismic signatures were examined within the Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico. Time-frequency analysis reveals that wind-driven saltation events produce measurable seismic energy enhancements, particularly within the 100-300 Hz band, with clear spectral distinctions between wind-only forcing and particle-laden transport. Additionally, rainfall events were identified by elevated seismic amplitudes in the …

The Origin And Geologic History Of Dolostones Associated With The Moab Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Utah, Charles Ojodale Igomu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the origin and geologic context of dolostones associated with the Moab Valley salt wall in southeastern Utah, a feature within the broader Paradox Basin that offers an exceptional opportunity to study the interplay between carbonate sedimentation, diagenesis, and salt diapirism. The fundamental research question focuses on evaluating whether dolostones observed in the Moab Valley are all depositional, diagenetic or structurally reworked components of deeper stratigraphy, and how their presence and geometry relate to the halokinetic processes that shaped sedimentation across the Moab Valley. This study tested the hypothesis that dolostones within Moab Valley represent a mixed assemblage …

Simultaneous Selection Of Inflations And Variables In Multiple Inflations Poisson Model (Mip), John Koomson Aug 2025

Simultaneous Selection Of Inflations And Variables In Multiple Inflations Poisson Model (Mip), John Koomson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Count data frequently arise in biomedical, economic, and social science research and are often characterized by structural excesses at specific count levels. To accommodate such patterns, Su et al. (2013), among others, introduced the Multiple-Inflation Poisson (MIP) model, which allows for multiple inflated counts within the distribution. However, two critical challenges remain in modeling such data: (i) identifying the true inflation points where excess counts occur, and (ii) selecting the relevant covariates that explain variation in the inflation and count process. This dissertation addresses these issues by advancing the MIP model through a novel methodology that enables the simultaneous selection …

Temporal Partitioning And Coexistence Among Four Sympatric Felid Species In The Northern Jaguar Reserve, Kylie Marie Rezendes Aug 2025

Temporal Partitioning And Coexistence Among Four Sympatric Felid Species In The Northern Jaguar Reserve, Kylie Marie Rezendes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Coexistence among sympatric carnivores is shaped by behavioral strategies that mediate competition and mortality risk in heterogeneous landscapes. Understanding how sympatric carnivores, such as felids, use space and time in relation to one another requires models that account for both spatial and temporal overlap across landscapes. Models incorporating time-to-event probabilities provide a powerful framework for detecting behavioral dynamics across shared landscapes. This study evaluated the spatiotemporal responses of two apex predators â?? the jaguar (Panthera onca) and mountain lion (Puma concolor) - and two mesopredators - bobcat (Lynx rufus) and ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) - across five years of camera trap …

Laser Scan Path Design For Controlled Microstructure In Additive Manufacturing With Integrated Reduced-Order Phase-Field Modeling And Deep Reinforcement Learning, Augustine Twumasi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is a well-established additive manufacturing technique for fabricating intricate metal components with exceptional precision. A significant challenge in L-PBF is the formation of complex microstructures that influence final material properties. We propose a physics-guided, machine learning-aided approach to optimize scan paths for desired microstructure outcomes, such as equiaxed grains. We employed a phase-field method (PFM) to model the evolution of the crystalline grain structure. To reduce computational costs, we trained a surrogate machine learning model, a 3D U-Net convolutional neural network, using single-track phase-field simulations with varying laser powers to predict crystalline grain orientations based …

Rethinking Iterative Proportional Fitting: Scalable And Hybrid Approaches To Joint Distribution Fitting, William Ofosu Agyapong Aug 2025

Rethinking Iterative Proportional Fitting: Scalable And Hybrid Approaches To Joint Distribution Fitting, William Ofosu Agyapong

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) algorithm is widely used in contingency table estimation, survey weighting, and synthetic population generation due to its simplicity and strong theoretical foundation for matching observed marginal distributions. However, in high-dimensional settings, IPF faces substantial computational and memory demands, as well as statistical instability caused by sparse contingency tables. Moreover, IPF is less useful in modern population synthesis tasks that require both scalability and realism because, despite its superiority in matching known marginal distributions, it cannot produce realistic out-of-sample data points. To address these limitations, we first propose a blockwise IPF framework, in which the feature …
